russia is a quite active economic in the arctic. if you see something that looked like james bond, it has to do with the military. yes, i do think it starts december 23rd on d. w. ah, ah, this is dw news live from berlin, coven, 19 case. numbers, spike in china, infections spread in beijing after unpopular virus rules are curved. companies struggle as workers fall ill among them. funeral homes also coming up. germany
11:01 am
starts up its 1st liquid natural gas terminal. but will it be enough to comp loose from russian energy? and in football, croatia and morocco prepared to go head to head in the world, come to 3rd place, play off. we'll get the latest from katara as the tournament enters its final weekend. ah, i'm marrying evans dean, thanks for joining me. the chinese capital beijing is seeing a sharp increase in cove at 1900 cases. and high numbers of workers testing positive for the virus means that the cities funeral homes are overwhelmed. undertakers say they're short on drivers and workers. so families have to wait longer to cremate their relative local media. say there are more corona virus link deaths, even though official tallies. don't include the latest victims. china relaxed,
11:02 am
some of the world's toughest measures to control the spread of the virus. just over a week ago, a short time ago, i spoke to journalist 5 in crutches and beijing to get his assessment on the coven situation in china. and i asked him, how reliable the information from the government is? well, the official numbers are completely misleading, actually absurdly misleading. and yeah, what we've seen here in beijing is basically how the r last or 0 covert a fortress became the number one a covered hot spot. in a matter of days, it is literally hard to find any one in the city or who has not been infected the last 2 weeks with the virus. so literally, i mean, i've spoken to companies whose employees are 90 percent sick, or the consulate service of the german or embassy had to close down many of our companies that had to suspend the operation. because too many people who are sick,
11:03 am
it's really an earth. so spread that are even doctors who are infected have to continue working in hospitals because there's no other way. and yeah, of course we know that people are also dying. am some reporters, for example, the financial times they went to a crematorium, they went to funeral institutions and both of working at full capacity. and they to say that much more bodies are coming in than a dream usual to terms. so i think that's a clear sign, but those are death, as they do not show up in the official to statistics. and that is a really irresponsible to still publish them because they are really completely misleading and do not reflect the situation on the ground. was the picture in other large chinese cities. we're hearing that shanghai, the financial hub, is now closing its schools. are other big cities likely to follow or take other measures to curve the spread of the virus? it's very hard to really assess the situation on the ground because of the lack of
11:04 am
a transparent data and from my understanding shanghai season increase of a corporate cases, a mess of increase. but the situation is not as bad as and begging at least not yet . and the closure of schools is basically a mitigation effort. and i'm sure we will see a similar efforts also in other cities because the real stress or a stress test of the pandemic is, will not happen in beijing and shanghai where we have a rather developed a medical system. but more in the 2nd tier cities are in the, in the provinces and in the west or, and also in the south where a, some of the medical systems really very rudimentary developed. and in the coming weeks, we will have a chinese new year the, the travel season where hundreds of millions of chinese will travel to their home towns. and of course then also take the virus am and it will spread it to every corner of the country. so they are, we will really see em how, how am fast, you know, senior people can get bexar natives. and because really that, that time is ticking. and i think the country really was not prepared for such

heretical opening up after 2 and a half years of his. he recovered fabian crunch mom in beijing for as 5 in thank you so much for your reporting. the european union has denounced the latest wave of russian bombardments on ukraine's energy infrastructure as indiscriminate terror. he crane is struggling to restore electricity and heating to residents and major cities after russians missile attacks. on friday, he transnational energy supplier said these later strikes disabled half the systems capacity and in warren that it'll take longer to restore power. a 3rd of kids residents still have no electricity, and half have no heating. will germany is opening its 1st liquefied natural gas terminal to day we should be seeing some live pictures from the port advert has happened. there we

are on the north of seat, and that's where chancellor all of shoals and a number of high ranking ministers have just arrived for the official opening ceremony set to start in just a short while. the new energy infrastructure is part of germany strategy to win itself off of russian gas and look for ways to import gas from other parts of the world. this floating facility is the centerpiece of germany's new ellen g terminal. built in record time in the hope of ending dependency on russian gas and adding to an existing europe white network. the amanda, we've spoken to our friends on europe's west coast in the netherlands and belgium, about extending their terminals and carrying capacity. and france will send us gas for the 1st time to want to leave, and that liquefied natural gas comes from all around the world. but imports from
11:07 am
russia into europe have risen to record levels accounting for 13 percent of the total. beyond my net whom f liquid inputs from russia to europe are increasing again to spain and france and funk. and there are long term contracts between these countries and russian law. some is also going to belgium and the netherlands, and this gas is being sent on to germany. uses gas le done alright doggedly fat knock, deutschland siberian gas is being transported by see russia has been building new l. n. g terminals of its own export volumes are smaller than before. but russia is earning $5.00 to $10.00 times more from liquid gas than it used to make. why the north stream pipeline? there's no talk of boy cutting russian gas as long as it was, as long as russian gas is on the market somewhere in the world, it's a 0 sum game. i love if everyone does without russian gas than they were going to
11:08 am
be massive shortages that have to be made up somewhere. and that means higher prices. i isn't really far from ostracizing, russia, french companies, for example, our joint venture partners with the russian liquid gas group, nova tech. in a complex market gas flows are effectively borderless. germany would like to operate its 1st ellen g terminal free from russian supplies. but in the international gas market, there is no fair trade certificate. well, for more on this story, i'm joined in the studio by did is political corresponding, catherine lancaster. hello to you, catherine. okay, so the german chancellor and his ministers are touting. this is a major step towards energy independence. but is this one single gas terminal really going to do enough to release a germany from its dependence on russian energy?
11:09 am
oh, look. so the thing is russia made up about a half or even more than half of germany's gas demand. so those quite a big hold that is to be filled. and it is estimated that the terminal villains have and will only supply about 10 percent or even less than 10 percent of germany annually need. so no, it absolutely is not enough. more is needed, more is planned, but it is hailed as a big success by the german government, as you said. but actually it is not really that great in and of itself. if you look at it, because as long as germany gets gas from its european partners, they will still germany will still receive rush and gas as well because it comes in the mix. and it gets a germany beer dieter, this liquefied natural gas or hub was built in record time. there is lots of money put into it to make this happen. so who exactly is benefiting from this terminal?
11:10 am
so as we've been talking about germany, in terms of who will deliver this gas to germany, germany hasn't signed any long term contracts yet, but it will still receive gas through belgium, through the netherlands, through france. but one big thing for germany also is the world's largest producer of elegy, which is cutter. and that had its controversial history as well. and germany has signed a contract with cut out that will only come into play in 2026. so won't mediately solve any of those winter problems that are coming on and right at our doorstep. basic that yell in 2026 is still 3 years down the road. so what is germany planning? you know, to beef up it's energy market in may be the near future. so there are 2 more energy terminals plan to have been this winter still. and in total, the plant about a number of 11 terminals on land and on sea. and as he said, it all had
11:11 am
a very expedited process. so those a lot of criticism, also rising in terms of this is possible for fossil fuel for all technology. basically, we're building new infrastructure for what we don't want any more. why is it not possible for renewable energy, which is where we're looking at? indeed, i mean, if the goal is to eventually, you know, when ourselves off of fossil fuels, this certainly doesn't seem to be the way to do that. but the german government does say that some of the terminals that are on land can actually be transformed into something that can print treats and green hydrogen later on. but you know, experts say that might not be as easy as they sell it. so perhaps a multi purpose energy terminal liquefied natural gas now and hopefully renewables, somewhere down the road. hopefully here's hoping i catherine lancaster. thank you so very much for being here.
