the world is the spirit of, ah, architect of emotions. architecture is kind of a mystery. believe me, this is chante stuart's december 25th on d w. ah ah, this is detail. the news live from berlin. police in germany, recover priceless, treacherous part of the loot. from the spectacular 2019 heist on dresden greenville to museum members of a criminal berlin gang are currently on trial for the robbery. also coming up,

cutting loose from russian energy. germany's cancer opens the country's 1st liquid natural gas terminal with winter. here, berlin is scrambling to reduce reliance on russian supplies, but is it enough? and lawmakers in peru reject bringing forward elections following the ousting of president pedal castillo, his removal triggered deadly nationwide protests. ah, i'm pablo fo lillius. thanks for joining us. german police say they find some of the priceless treasures stolen and one of the country's biggest jewel thefts. 3 years ago, back in november 2019 thieves broke into dresden green, volt museum, making off with artifacts and jewels worth around 213000000 euros. these suspected robbers, members of a berlin gang,
6:02 pm
were arrested and charged and their trial began earlier this year. while d. w reporter aaron tilton, is on the story for us today on, reported on that heist 3 years ago aren't great to see. so before we start talking about today's events, remind us of what exactly happened in that heist back in 2019. well, i mean the really on november morning when it actually happened, basically an alarm was triggered inside the green vault. and as we were seeing there, the green ball typically was the home. ready of the crown jewels of saxony and priceless treasures from the collection of august, the strong and security guards were actually able to enter the chamber where the joules were kept. they saw scene of absolute utter destruction. one of the windows leading up to the street had been rich basically on its frame. and many of the cases which contain these prices, historical artifacts were smashed open. a lot of jewels and artifacts had been ripped, actually, directly out of the fastenings which secured them into those cases. and it was
6:03 pm
a scene of absolute utter destruction. i was on the scene as about 10 o'clock in the morning and was just absolute confusion as to exactly exactly how a break in like this could occur. i think when people hear about an art museum being broken into a hollywood perspective of like a high tech operation to get around security. but basically, what we saw there in the course of the days as police and investigators, really more information was seen more akin to basically a gas station robbery. it appears that several men had set fire to a transformer out in streams to make sure that all of the street lights have gone out. and then they use heavy machinery to really rip this metal metal bars, from the walls, and then just ran into the chamber in the course of just a couple of minutes. used hammers and pick axes to break open the containers, a catch all of these artifacts. they then piled into a station wagon and made their escape and that station wagon was then later found,
6:04 pm
burned out another part of the city. now there was a lot of confusion on the ground. that's exactly how that happened. and what exactly was going to happen to them all of these jewels? now, there was a lot of different theories and what, why exactly, they wanted to break in and steal these particular items. but speaking to the young people didn't at the time you could tell it was a huge loss for them because there was a lot of crime put into this collection. because to a certain extent, it was very much the cultural identity. but the city of as and also on the people this route and say, are an if you could answer this next question. and briefly, what about today's developments? well, basically we know that a large section of the rules were actually found here in berlin. and of course, that's going to be a great relief to historians and police as well. the initial theory is that under components we're going to be broken apart and sold, you know, for the individual rules and gold, which has been a huge loss to germany in terms of the historical significance of the items is
6:05 pm
actually the jewels in gold are worth that much of themselves, it's historic significance, which is really i'm so key there and if they haven't broken apart and sold well, a lot of history would have gone with it. and at the same time, we're seeing today that a large percentage of that was found, which is a great meeting for both the police and the catalyst, or in turn. berlin, thanks r t w's r until to well, germany has opened its 1st liquefied natural gas terminal, a key part of its efforts to win itself off russian gas, chance her olaf sholtes and other top officials took part in the official opening ceremony at the north sea port of vill hm soften the new energy infrastructure as part of germany strategy to import gas from other parts of the world. germany's brand new liquefied natural gas terminal. and what berlin harps will be the beginning of the end of its dependence on russian gas. as chancellor olaf
6:06 pm
sholtes officially opened the terminal, he praised the record spade of the build. it was constructed in the wake of russia's invasion of ukraine in february. that his sparked economic and energy concerns across the world. the unknown 5 young we in europe, we in germany are noticing this in high energy prices and inflation. and of course, in the fact that we have to worry about the question of energy security. however, we decided very quickly that we want to do everything to ensure that we can guarantee germany's energy supplied with gas, independently of gas deliveries from russia buff. this is now the new german pace with which we are advancing infrastructure and it should be a model not only for this plant, but from many others. the l. n. j terminal is based in vill helms hoffen on the
6:07 pm
north se coast. the facility will allow germany to import ellen jay from other parts of the world, including a signed deal to import from cut off from 2026. but the project has been criticized for prolonging germany's reliance on fossil fuels contradicting the government's climate goals. did we reconcile clement protection and energy transition with combating need? but combating need is the priority. this facility can supply 50000 households annually. and belinda is now planning on building more alan j terminals, adding to a europe wide network that it hopes will help provide energy independence or staying with this topic, we're joined now by constantine saga an energy expert from the n g o environmental action germany, welcome to d, w, so german officials appeared to be very pleased indeed with this terminal. can you give us your reaction to it?
6:08 pm
well, for me it's robbers half day today because this is a new fossil infrastructure. and as of them by mental organization, we understand why it has been builds and why we need that speed. but then on the other hand, there have been quite some on don slides on the environment. so 1st of all, when it comes to climate, particularly because this is going to prolong germans dependency on fossil gus, and that's a sad thing. now the ellen g terminals and theory are because germany is trying to be more independent from russian gas supplies. i'd like to know what your take on that though is well, as i said, we understand why this is necessary. i don't think that a single or few l n g terminals will post a problem. but currently the german government is planning a huge over capacity and let's not forget the other european countries are also planning additional projects. so you as a whole and end up with
6:09 pm
a huge number of additional energy terminals and capacities. and of course, this is going to pose a plant for climate targets. so for us, it's really crucial that we're going to limit the time this new infrastructure can be used. and that's our key point of criticism. right now we don't see those limits, at least not in line with comma talked. now german officials have said though that they intend to use these l. n. j terminals for green hydrogen in the future. do you see that it's feasible? i think there's a lot of confusion in that debate. so 1st of all, it's important to note that f s i use floating terminals like the one that was just inaugurated in the mm hm. they're not capable of using hydrogen. so this is not going to be a part for that. we're going to need other infrastructure, and we have to set this clear. we need that, but those will be other projects. well, what projects could those be?
6:10 pm
because if you need an immediate short term alternative to l. n. g terminals. what exactly would that be for germany? well, when we talk about hydrogen, it's not about a short term alternative because hydrogen is going to mean that you need to set up an infrastructure anyway. be it screen infrastructure from germany or from other sources. but in the right now, in this moment, we understand why those terminals are necessary, but let's not slow down in our efforts. so for energy transition, and this is about saving energy is the most important thing about also accelerating the brand model of renewables. and that's what we want to see. so let's take the space, let's take it to energy transition and its limits. those fossil projects to water so really necessary konstantin sag from environmental action. germany, thank you for joining us on data frontier. let's take
