up winds park wild celebrations in the field. and course in where this iris is speak to our correspondent in dover, plus russia launch is drove a tax on keith bez. vladimir putin heads to bill ruse on a trip that's causing concern in ukraine. ah, hello, i'm terry martin. good to have you with us. we begin with breaking news out of montreal where countries at the un biodiversity summit have adopted a historic deal to protect nature. the agreement is the most significant effort yet to protect vidal ecosystems safeguarding 30 percent of the world's land and sees the deal also promotes agricultural reforms and provides critical financing to save bio diversity in the developing world essentially. or for more,
11:02 am
let's bring in beatrice christoph row from our environment. barbara. so beatrice $190.00 countries understand have struck a deal to protect biodiversity. the agreement is being called historic. why is it so significant the so significant because we're basically going through a mass extinction event where up to $1000000.00 species might be threatened if we keep going the way we're going right now. and this agreement, the standout kind of commitment that we made here, is to protect 30 percent of our land and 30 percent of our oceans a by 2030 right now we're only protecting 17 percent of our terrestrial areas and 10 percent of are maritime areas, which is a lot of numbers, but it's basically to say, this is the biggest commitment we've ever made to protect these ecosystems and the wildlife implants that live in them. this deal was howard out after long and intense negotiations. what were the most contentious points in the agreement,
11:03 am
the biggest sticking point as one that we've seen before, also in the un kind talks in november, which is financing. because what poor nations are saying is that they want more develop nations to give them more money to help them in these conservation efforts, especially because his poor nations have some of the most outstanding biodiversity in the world. for example, just think of, of the amazon. and so this got so contentious that at one point delegates from, from these 4 nations walked out of the negotiations. okay. how much of game changer do you think this really will be? will it put the brakes on the relentless destruction of habitat that we've seen over the last decades? the thing with these types of talks is always that we need to wait a few years to see how they are implemented. there is no question that many conservationists are saying that this deal is historic and what we're promising. but we have to see how it actually is implemented by governments in the end. because for example, with a historic climate agreement,
11:04 am
the parents agreement of 20 t, we are seeing that we're only kind of halfway at we're, we're sorry, we're doing double the amount of temperature arise that we had a promise willis agreement feed into the effort to combat climate change a definitely well because and well, if it is implemented correctly and well, and because protecting our biodiversity is absolutely crucial in our fight for climate change. for example, if we think of the anna's on protecting the trees and all the white life and it is absolutely crucial for our water cycles for our carbon emissions. and so it is absolutely crucial that we keep this and check beatrice. thank you so much. that was beatrice christophe ro, from our environment desk. well, as you probably know,

argentina has won the 2022 world off all world cup and kata the final against, depending champions france had fans on the edge of their seats as it went into extra time. and then a penalty shoot out the match is already being called a classic. leonor massey opened the scoring early on after argentina were awarded a penalty and not long afterwards, it was unhealthy. maria doubled the lead for the south americans in the 36 minutes . the game seemed over until with just 10 minutes to go. killian and by pe scored once from the penalty spots and just 2 minutes later again with a beautiful side volley to sent the game to extra time. there it was messy who gave argentina a 3 to lead, with his 13th career world cup gold before another end, but he penalty equalized the game again. his 3rd goal of the final made him the top score of the tournament and took this absolute thriller of a game to the penalty shootouts. however,

argentina were the ones to keep their cool converting all for penalties while friend smith to the south americans when the world come for the 3rd time while it's leila missy's 1st title, and what was his last ever world cup match? let's get more now from our sports, correspond it, mark meadows who is in caught up mark argentina, our soccer world champions. once again. what were the key factors in their success at this tournament? well, i think in the final it was there a quick start. i mean that was a fantastic 1st half margin tina to be tune a lot. i actually think it's probably the best half of football i've ever seen from a team in a world of final. somehow france got back into it, killing empathy, only the 2nd man to score hapchick in a will cook final, but it wasn't enough. argentina, prevailed, and obviously leonor messy was a big reason for that. he was named player the tournament showing what he's done all through this world cup, and he's achieved

a life long dream. he has finally wound the one thing that was missing from his glittering c v. a world cup winners metal. now i've written a piece for d, w dot com, saying that he can now be classed as the greatest male footballer of all time. i think many fans would agree with that. the previous or argentina captain's when the woke up was diego madonna, back in 1986, a year before messy was even born. okay, you're there in doha. give us a taste of the atmosphere. what was it like there after the game? while i got to the stadium 3 hours early and the metro was absolutely rammed, it was actually a little bit dangerous and there was some trouble and some injuries, but it settled down. and then inside the stadium, it really was an electric atmosphere. the argentinian fans outnumbered the french hugely. that's mainly because a lot of migrant workers that live here in cat are, were supporting argentina, basically because they love messy. lots of argentinians had come for the game as
11:08 am
well. they were absolutely ecstatic at the end. let's listen to some of the fans after what was, what many people think the greatest woke up final ever is still alive after such a much. it was so intense that so many matches in one same one the 1st time was just amazing football then. and babe's just a monster incredible. and to get through, ah, when a d i by the end i, that is just incredible. amazing. i we would have loved, don't just need to weigh. but still, we didn't give up and we are proud of the team. all of them we don't like to lose off. i don't know what to tell you. we are proud of the french team. so something had been a good. i think they could have done better. i love my job, i love my wife. i did everything together. i came, i thought i got good food bigoted back to put aside as man taking it back to what a guided her, the fans there got to experience and exciting final,

but that the tournament itself was highly controversial. mark, how do you think it will be remembered in years to come on the field? it was a great tournament. we had a record number of goals, 172. that will probably increase for the next will cope in 2026, which is played in the usa, mexico and canada. that's because it's being increased to $48.00 teams. and there was no hooliganism here that's unique really. it was probably largely because of the fact that alcohol is not so easy to get hold of, but of us he off the field. there were lots of controversies, the migrant deaths in building the stadiums. the fact that kat are accused of buying the rights to host to will cope long ago, which they deny. but otherwise, they'll think it was a good tournament. and they probably now gone to bid for the olympics. now, i'm not sure what's going to happen next, but we'll see whether they win that olympic bid. i think what is the recurring

image of this will cup will be lena messy. lifting the trophy now he had an arab robe on top of him. that was given to him by the fif of president and the image of keta. he looked a little bit uncomfortable wearing it. and i think that shows who's in control after all. messy place a p s g owned by cutter, the w's mark meadows. they're indo har. thank you so much mark. well, in argentina there were cheers and tears as thousands poured into the streets to celebrate the country's 1st world cup since 1986. ah, they came by the thousands to the capital. the streets of when was iris a wash in a sea of blue and white and smiling faces? there was singing, cheering, dancing, and no shortage of tears. no wonder i'm 41 years old and we suffered in the 1990

championship watching this world cup with my children. it was something wonderful. oh, argentine lost to west germany in the 1990 final. the country's last world cup. when was 36 years ago, that was with football legend, diego marin donna. ah, ah, yeah, fantastic. fantastic. it's the 3rd well top i've seen, but it's really the 1st one i've had with my daughters. and we've decided to come here because i think it's a historic moment as he gave us. yes, the game was a nail biter until the very end. when argentina dethroned former champions, france in a penalty shoot out. aah! for many in argentina and fans around the world, this game was about one man, you know, messy. the 35 year old is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time, winning almost every trophy imaginable. during his long career. now he's achieved

his life goal and produce lifelong memories for thousands of argentinians along the way. ah, now to ukraine, whose forces say they shot down 30 drones during an early morning attack on the capital. keith said the official say critical infrastructure was hit, but didn't give details. hours earlier video emerged of rushes defense minister, sergey shy, gu, purportedly inspecting russian troops in ukraine. though it's not clear where or when the footage was actually taken, its release comes ahead of vladimir putin 1st visit to neighboring bell a ruse. in years, the russian president is due in minsk later for talks with celebration ruler alexander mishenko. our correspondent nick connelly is in keep nick, tell us more about this morning's drone attack on kia when it was very

loud this morning. about 45 am there was out of and t aircraft and he missile defense systems making a lot of record here. people really having to ask themselves whether to get up, whether to go to their sellers and look for safety or stay in bed because the alert was but 3 hours. so this is basically the kind of reality that people have to deal with here, asking themselves weighing up the dangers and the risks themselves or getting a night sleep before a week of work, of which of these have become routine here. and we saw something similar last week where there was a small, a drone attack, followed by a missile attack, a bigger missile attack, the following day. so little suspicion here that this was about working out where ukraine's defenses are trying to position them, trying to get those locations to then use the missiles more effectively the next day. the kind of big dilemma here is that these drones are very cheap there. it's believe to cost about $20000.00 each. so from the munition used to shoot them down is more expensive than the drones themselves. the russians have lots half of them
11:14 am
and can use them freely. i'm the damage hasn't been so big and key of his logic with power would stay, but definitely the expectation here of more attacks of that kind to come. so more attacks of that kind to come. but there's also a lot of speculation, nick about what russia's next steps could be in this war. russian media reporting that vladimir putin will make a big announcement this week. what is ukraine anticipating will not only that, but also his visits to bellows to day expectation that he's going to put more pressure on. a barouche says, a ruler, a little lucas jenko to potentially send his own bill, or russian troops into battle against ukrainians to maybe start another land offensive against ukraine. from there, after all, kids only 100 kilometers from the boilers and borders. this is all very close and very worrying for ukraine. and this has been used as a threat as a kind of diversionary tactic in the past to try and get ukraine to spread itself mckinley and to take troops away from those crucial battlefields in the south. in the east, i think this time though,
11:15 am
people are taking it more seriously. there's more fear that this might actually happen now, given how badly russia has been doing in the last couple of months. and there's generally a sense that vitamin putin is willing to escalate further. his willing to risk more russian lives, the ukraine say about a 100000 russian. so saudi died during this war and that this is not the end is not going to be of any kind of interval now of the winter, but they're going to see more fighting and more losses as this which continues. nick, thank you very much, is always our corresponding economy there in the ukrainian capital t you're watching d w. news business is next. i'm terry martin. thanks for watching. with these places in europe for smashing the wreckers stepped into a bold adventure. it's the treasure map for modern globetrotters discover some of you to record breaking.
