right now to the reporter of that story of your correspond, manuel shaws with us in t. the money was very good to see you there and some impressive performances on stage, especially that, that pianists, but many people were you are. do they seem to be embracing this change from orthodox christmas? ah, hi, a william and also merry christmas. well, the chair of course is very particular for ukrainians. the stephanie didn't expect to leave christmas in such conditions. and these came with a big change in order to defend themselves from, from russia. they, a lot of them don't celebrate old off christmas anymore. and you can see behind me, that's the key of christmas tree, eliminated all the colors with the colors of the ukrainian thought. there's also
6:05 pm
a lot of people here who are said that writing to day rather than say the writing on the 7th of january. i've talked to some people sama so found a good compromise, but also for older generations. they, we sent a great today a christmas. we spread any media to family and then they, we have another celebration of the week at their grand parents, for example, on the 7th of january. but they really want to make a point that the series that difference and that they identify mo, most with western culture. right, and these russian culture think miller can argue with having more reasons to celebrate more days to celebrate, especially in those circumstances. we heard earlier president the lensky christmas address. it was quite defiant. how have people there been responding to it? well people are really, you know, they have riley behind their present have been doing so see since the beginning of the war. and we had followed me semanski saying that ukraine and ukrainians weren't waiting for a miracle. they were creating one and thought very much, you know,
6:06 pm
and bodies, watts, ukrainians, happy enough to an old, over at this year. you know, remember when the war started, people were saying, and even so, max spreads were saying that the ukraine would be crush park quickly. russia says said that it would when the will in 3 days, we are over $300.00 days of the school. ukraine is still standing. ukraine is still resisting, even under fairly difficult. he comes and sees with millions of people, deprived of the electricity in the dead of the winter, but destitute, standing and out very, very resilient. and we heard some people on our report. you did some people you've spoken to that they're not feeling much in the christmas spirit, which is of course, completely understandable. how hopeful do people seem that next christmas will come under better circumstances where people have to be optimistic if so on to survive the situation. it's very hard, of course, every day does air read the lads every day they asked twice yesterday,
6:07 pm
hassan was hit many, many people died. many people were injured and that's a daily, you know, a daily hazard here in this world, people are dying every day. civilians are dying every day, but they keep being very helpful. they keep trusting the army as well. they keep people keep trusting people on their frontline. so there is a lot of optimism within the ukranian society that they will eventually when the school manual shows they're in kiva, happy and safe christmas to you as well. thanks very much. thank you. germany's president, frog thought shy. myer is using his annual christmas day address to call for what he calls a fair piece in ukraine. his pre recorded remarks are set for broadcast in germany later on christmas day. the speech includes a thank you to the people of germany who have helped others. this year, the, the mid thug of this, he is address my president stein mile focuses on what he calls the brutal russian attack against ukraine. he speaks of the suffering of people forced to flee their

homeland and spells out that what every one is longing for most is peace. other, these are free. there is not an issue. however, this piece is not yet within reach of the design, and it must be a fair piece on the lawn which neither rewards the land, grabel pine, nor abandons, people knew, craned the arbitrary actions and violence of their occupiers lead. i'm kaylin gun until this piece can be established and it is a humanitarian imperative that we stand by. those were being attacked, threatened and oppressed. by doing this, we are shining a light of hope in the darkness of injustice. there half know the president talks of the welcome that refugees from ukraine received when they came to germany. and he praises the solidarity shown by many ordinary germans towards the new arrivals. and frankly, his vaught, a friendly word line, a small gesture of kindness understanding for others of her openness toward

strangers. you've offended shine. my also refers to the continuing threat from climate change after a year in which activists have made headlines with controversial protests. he calls on every one to face up to the problem and praises the commitment of concerned young people. they have all been done by this for we need both got the ambition of the young and the experience of older people, the other after all minds that we all share. a common goal as to do that the young are not the last generation on this planet. and rather that they are the 1st generation in a climate friendly world. despite immense challenges, the president says germans have shown creativity and result building on those virtues. people should look forward with confidence to the year. ahead and for more on that address on joint here in the city of your senior political analyst, melinda crane melendez. wonderful to see you. i'm we heard about, you know,
6:10 pm
thanks. i just, i my are saying at germans are standing with ukrainians despite the hardships it's causing back in germany. does that kind of jive with the reality you're seeing on the ground here? certainly germans have been welcoming, as he said in the clip that we heard earlier. there have been many, many germans showing enormous support and generosity to the 1000000 ukrainians. germany has take it in that is the highest number in absolute terms just behind poland. poland has taken in more, but certainly the ukrainians who are here say that they do feel welcome the majority, in fact 37 percent would like to stay. however, some cities, including berlin and others, are struggling now to find accommodation for ukrainian refugees. their number living intense, now here in berlin, and that is leading to a shift in attitudes, particularly in the eastern part of germany where far right politicians have done
6:11 pm
their best to stir up anti migrant sentiment. so we are now seeing an increasing number of germans saying they do have concerns that the country may have taken in to many, many germans whose having housing crisis long before these refugees came. and he also talked about climate change. he talked about the urgency of climate change. it's been an interesting year for the climate agenda here in germany. is there a mismatch between what the president was talking about and what we've been seeing and has a policy? well, some of the public conversation here in germany has focused on to a great extent on how fast climate action can take place with the younger generation saying it's not fast enough. he talked about the last generation movement. he himself had been critical of some of their tactics, but the fact is, climate is very important. germans on international polls, germany ranks highest in terms of concern. and in terms of germans concerns right now about the crisis situation. multiple crisis situation because trees in many se

climate is 3rd on their list after inflation and inequality. and in fact, ahead of the war in ukraine. so older and younger germans share the concern, but how to deal with climate crisis? is this an ongoing conversation right now? this polls turn into policy is always an interesting thing to watch. i'm. i also have a lot of optimism. his speech even use that word, optimism a few a few times. how optimistic is germany feeling as it closes out 2022? well, the sentiment is shifting, a majority of germans say this has been the hardest year for them in memory. and many have been quite concerned about all the different things that i mentioned . but we're seeing that concerned go down somewhat in polls. we're seeing a majority of 50 percent of germans saying they feel that the country is dealing with the crisis pretty well. and if you look at the state of the economy and the

consumer impressions than in fact, that seems to be the case and shy myers speech was interesting because some of his other late speeches of late have been quite dark, a sober warnings about hard, rough times head in the fact that people will have to deal with constraints and use self restraint. this one was far more positive in the sense that he was encouraging people, encouraging the kinds of deeds and actions that can help people to support each other in times of crisis. that's exactly what his position as federal president is, intend to deduce it to set a kind of moral direction for the country. and i think at a time when german leadership is often criticized for not providing enough of that, this was quite a strong appeal that he made catch more flies with honey. i guess his father cheyenne myers objective. they're senior political analyst on the grant. thank you very much for that. and turning now to some other
