ukrainians mark christmas earlier than usual to distance themselves from moscow's forethought to christian holiday calendar. our correspondent visited visits, residence in boucher, near keith, who have been putting their own traditions center stage. and in his christmas address, germany's president reflects on the war and ukraine as well as hopes for what he calls the 1st generation in a climate friendly world. ah . nic spicer, welcome to the program, and we begin in north america, where authorities say more than 30 people have now died due to the extreme weather that sweeping the u. s. in canada, nearly 2000000 homes and businesses have suffered power outages, and countless holiday makers have found themselves strand. a christmas day,

my progress was slow and frustrating. here in new york state's cause slipping and sliding in slow motion plows on the roads trying to clear a path for 3 of us snow, but many only scratching the surface the state governor urging people to stay home . i cannot overstate how dangerous the conditions still are. we need people to stay off the roads. yes. one more day. i know it's christmas. i know how hard it is. you came off of a couple of years of being separated during the pandemic. it's heartbreaking. some advice he wanted to leave a homes couldn't even get half a front door. okay, well it was a colossal waste of time. this is how furry made it out. the snow is so thick and heavy that you can't, you can't even get through it. snow has been pining up from coast to coast with freezing winds, sending temperatures plunging well below 0. across the border in canada,
8:03 am
travel is also battling the elements. those going by train from ottawa, arrived at the station to find their journeys cancelled for some for luggage. went back into the taxi of his foe. don't know how to get home. fortunately, changed, cancelled today to try to get back her holidays. now. i'm waiting for you. go to stay there for a day and go back across north america. the winter weather has knocked out power, leaving millions cold and in the dog. forecast to save a deep freeze will stick around for christmas. before return to kama, conditions from monday. and for more on this for join. now live by march, an art a meteorologist at the national weather service, weather prediction center in college park, maryland. mark, what is the latest on the storms?
8:04 am
progress to canada and united states please. hey, nick yeah. conditions are finally starting to improve. thankfully over a lot of the country and even into canada, the system that was responsible for the, the blizzard conditions and very cold, cold temperatures has moved northward and kind of beginning to weaken as it, as it enters canada. so we're definitely seeing improving conditions over a lot of the country. ah, we still do have some lake effect snow. so in new york, buffalo, western new york state, i'm still seeing some like effects. no, but not anything like what we saw a couple days ago. still cold across the eastern part of the united states and canada, but not as cold as what we saw a couple days ago. so in general, we're starting to see that improvement, and that is going to continue over the next couple of days as well. and historically speaking, mark, can you give us an order of magnitude like how this compares to previous winter storms? is it, is it the biggest and decades?
8:05 am
yeah, i mean, it certainly was a big one. ah, you know, this thing had really all the aspects. so you had snow with it, you had the very strong winds and then you had the extreme cold and it was, you know, our rapid temperature drops. some of the temperature drops we saw in, in an hour or 3 hours, where were records in in 24 hours. temperatures probably a considerable amount near record. so it is one of the, one of the stronger cold fronts that we've seen come through, at least in recorded history. so it really was that combination of this strong low pressure, the strong cold front that brought the you know, the combination of snow, wind, and cold. so it's really the fact that we had all 3 of those present that really ratcheted up the impacts with this system. so it's hard to really say ok, you know, for sure. ah, but it certainly was one of the stronger ones that we've seen in a while. i think it's safe to to say that for sure. and, and mark, i know we're talking about cold and, and not global warming. but does this somehow fit into the pattern of climate
8:06 am
change? is it one of the gear somehow? yeah, i mean it's, it's hard to say for sure. ah, you know, it's sensors just one event. ah, but in general, you know, the climate change or, or that, that idea favors for extreme weather. i think that's so that's something to be said . but as far as any one of van, it's really hard, it's hard to say. so i think in this case, you know, it's just a very strong ah winter storm that brought devastating impacts to a lot of okay, thanks for that insight. march an ard meeting or ologist at the national weather service center prediction center in college park, maryland. thank you and go now to boucher outside keys. a city that bore the brunt of rushes, initial invasion for survivors of alleged war crimes. their christmas is especially difficult. it's different in another way this year to with the holiday happening

now instead of in early january. as is the russian orthodox tradition. it's the grey and rainy christmas, dane butcher, and residents who have come back to the city after rush. an occupation will not celebrate as usual. ah, lucia. yeah. i wasn't really in the mood to celebrate christmas. but now that the lights are back on in our apartment with my mood is lifted. lot movie already to celebrate by the seal. it's only going to be the small family, soccer, minimal corrosion. what is the loss of? i'm not really in the mood for christmas this year. did that, but i'll try to create special moments for the children. i am your moment. dcea. they survived the west, but butch, i residents are unbroken to night. the articles, students with the form of the concepts and sasha, a young musician, is proudly wearing his vicious vanka, ukraine's traditional outfits. not rude to her was wrong. when a where my the she vancho,

showing the shelters without light, who we continued because we wanted to show our skills today was look a lot, especially during the war a concept like this is important to children, our future also received presence from the cities for in supportive bringing much needed relief after a difficulty. ah, rub lifting news from what was once a very dark place and didn't abuse emanuel shars who fall that report. told us after how people in ukraine are embracing the change from orthodox christmas. well, these here of course is very particular for ukrainians. i certainly didn't expect to leave christmas in such conditions and these came with a big change in order to defend themselves from, from a rush out. they, a lot of them don't celebrate or dos christmas anymore. and you can see behind me, as the key of christmas tree,
8:10 am
eliminated all the colors with the colors of the ukrainian thought. there's also a lot of people here who are said that writing to day rather than celebrating on the 7th of january, i've talked to some people samo, so found a good compromise, but also for older generations. they, we celebrates today at christmas, we spread any media to family and, and there we have another celebration of the week, a grand parents, for example, on the 7th of january. but they really want to make a point that the series that difference and that they identify mo, most with western culture, rather than me is russian culture. let's get a round up of some of the other headlines now. 3 russian military personnel have been killed by a falling wreckage of a ukrainian drone, according to russian news sources, which was shot down over rushes angles. airbase. the facility is hundreds of kilometers from the front lines in ukraine. it's one of 2 facilities believed to have been targeted by ukrainian drone strikes earlier this month. more than 50

light of the ruling, he says the band will have a devastating effect on women's livelihoods and the lives of millions of people across the country. we call on the telephone authorities to reverse this decision as soon as possible. and we call on other organizations where he is not constant to come together to make sure that the assistance that we are giving is given on a principled way. and with the assistance of a dedicated female, she manage cherry and we're close. aah! the n g o bank comes on the heels of another really, women from attending university. some took to the streets to protest that decision . authorities use water cannons to disperse this demonstration in the city of herat . the last time the taliban ruled afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 women were banished from all public life and stones became commonplace. many worry

that's where the de facto authorities are. once again headed deep mala mala is vice president of humanitarian affairs. the international, a group care, she told us more about the impact of this ban in on the line is that for any woman or girl to interact, she has to, she is only able to interact with people who are related to her. what does this mean? this means that a male humanity in aid worker cannot interact and provide humanity in services to women and guts. so wine, if there is a condition that en deals can employ only male humanity, which means we can reach only men or miss dull life saving humanity in assistance. humanity and assistance is for every one person who is in need, it is not divided by gender. rather, pope francis has delivered his annual christmas day addressed to worshippers at
