9:01 am
usual to distance themselves from moscow's orthodox christian holiday. calendar, our correspondent visits residence in boucher near keith who've been putting their own traditions center stage and several a major aid group suspend operations in afghanistan after the taliban orders and g o to stop employing women. ah, i'm nick spicer. welcome to the program. and we start in north america, we're authority say more than 30 people have now died due to extreme weather that sweeping the us and canada. nearly 2000000 homes and businesses have suffered power outages and countless holiday makers have found themselves stranded christmas day.
9:02 am
my progress was slow and frustrating. here in new york state's cause slipping and sliding in slow motion plows on the roads trying to clear a path for 3 of us snow. but many only scratching the surface. the state governor urging people to stay home. i cannot overstate how dangerous the conditions still are. we need people to stay off the roads. yes, one more day. i know it's christmas. i know how hard it is. you came off of a couple of years of being. 6 separated during the pandemic, it's heartbreaking. some advice he wanted to leave a homes couldn't even get out the front door. okay, well it was a colossal waste of time. this is how furry made it out. the snow is so thick and heavy that you can't, you can't even get through it. snow has been piling up from coast to coast, with freezing winds, sending temperatures plunging well below 0. across the border in canada,
9:03 am
travel is also battling the elements. those going by train from ottawa, arrived at the station to find their journeys cancelled for some for luggage. went back into the taxi of his foe. don't know how to get home fortunately, changed cancel today to try to get back her holidays. now, i'm waiting for you go to stay there for a day to go back across north america. the wind to weather has knocked out power, leaving millions cold and in the dog forecast. to save a deep freeze will stick around for christmas before return to comma conditions from monday. and for more on this, we're joined now live by march, an art meteor ologist at the national weather service weather prediction center in college park, maryland. mark. what is the latest on the storms? progress to canada and united states please enact yeah. conditions are finally
9:04 am
starting to improve. thankfully over a lot of the country and even into canada. the system that was responsible for the blizzard conditions and very cold, cold temperatures has moved northward and kind of beginning to weaken as it as it enters canada. so we're definitely seeing improving conditions over a lot of the country. we still do have some lake effect snow. so in new york, buffalo, western new york state, i'm still seeing some effects. no, but not anything like what we saw a couple of days ago, still cold across the eastern part of the united states and canada, but not as cold as what we saw a couple of days ago. so in general, we're starting to see that improvement, and that is going to continue over the next couple of days as well. and historically speaking, mark, can you give us an order of magnitude like how this compares to previous winter storms? is it, is it the biggest in decades? yeah, i mean, it certainly was a big one. you know,
9:05 am
this thing had really all the aspects. so you had snow with it. you had the very strong winds and then you had the extreme cold. and it was our, you know, our rapid temperature drops. some of the temperature drops we saw in, in an hour or 3 hours, where were records in 24 hours. temperatures drops a considerable amount in their records. so it is one of the, one of the stronger cold from stuff we've seen come through, at least in recorded history. so it really was that combination of this strong low pressure, the strong cold front that brought the you know, the combination of snow, wind, and cold. so it's really the fact that we had all 3 of those present that really ratcheted up the impact with this system. so it's hard to really say, you know, for sure. but it certainly was one of the strong ones that we've seen in a while. i think it's safe to to say that for sure. and mark, i know we're talking about cold and not global warming, but does this somehow fit into the pattern of climate change? is it one of the gear somehow?
9:06 am
yeah, i mean it's, it's hard to say for sure. ah, you know, it's, since it's just one event, ah, but in general, you know, the climate change or, or that, that idea favors for extreme weather. i think that sob. so that's something to be said. but as far as any one a van, it's really hard, it's hard to say. so i think in this case you know, is just a very strong ah winter storm that brought devastating impacts to a lot of different. okay, thanks for that insight. mark sion ard meteor ologist at the national weather service center prediction centered in college park, maryland. thank and we turned out to bootstrap outside keith, a city that bore the brunt of russia's initial invasion for survivors of alleged war crimes. their christmas is especially difficult. it's different in another way this year to with the holiday happening now instead of in early january, as is the russian orthodox tradition. it's the grey and rainy christmas,
