and again, we still have time to out. i'm going with his subscribe one more minute like ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin us lawmakers released donald trump's tax returns. the documents give details of the former president's financial affairs before for years to keep them secret. are washington correspondent, assassin, how damaging the information could be? also on the program,

vladimir putin seats closer military ties with china. the russian presidents over church gets a guarded welcome. beijing is officially neutral over the war in new crimes. and china reopens its borders. after nearly 3 years of cope with 19 travel restrictions . but other nations are worried about beijing's rising infection numbers. ah, i'm pablo fo lillius. thanks for joining us. a u. s. house committee has released 6 years of donald trump's tax returns, the former president ford for years to keep them secret. last week, the democratic controlled house ways and means committee voted to release trump's tax records from 2015 to 20. 20. they're likely to provide new revelations about his finances. trump was the 1st presidential candidate in decades who refused to
4:02 am
release his tax records. and this all comes with republicans, it back to take control of the house of representatives. well, d, w correspondence to me, so misconduct, washington, dc told us about the new information revealed in the documents. so public, we've learned important details about how much the former president did and did not pay in taxes. we learned more about how much he donated over the years. we learned about some of his foreign holdings and also how some of his businesses performed. and for example, we knew already that he didn't pay any federal income tax and the year 2020. that's because his businesses took some big hits because of pandemic. but what is interesting to see is that the amount of federal income tax that he paid varied a lot from year to year, so i can throw some numbers out at you. so for example, he paid just $750.00, a federal income tax in the year 2017, a year later, nearly $1000000.00 and a year after that $133000.00. so a big difference there,
4:03 am
as you can see, and these documents really reveal that trump used deductions, he took losses in his businesses and that reduced the amount of tax id he owed significantly and asked for donations. the charitable contributions that i mentioned that also fluctuated quite a bit. so he reported donating nearly $2000000.20 and then nothing in 2020. and one more point that was really interesting. pablo, it was, it was interesting to see that he held financial accounts in foreign countries, including china, through the 1st year of his presidency. so a lot of people here in washington asking questions about that. there are plenty of questions i'm sure that are going to be asked in the coming days to me. one of the reactions there been to the release tax documents. well, it won't surprise you. pablo, that the reactions have fallen a long partisan line. so, democrats have long said that this is important for transparency. and when one of the democrats in the committee that published these returns,
4:04 am
said on friday that these documents show that trump had something to hide, that he used questionable deductions and tax avoidance scheme to get out of paying federal income tax republicans. on the other hand of said, this is private business, this does not need to be made public and they are now warning revenge. so they're threatening to make public tax returns of private citizens. the supreme court justices, business leaders, political enemies as they call them. and you mentioned already that republicans will have a majority in the house of representatives starting next week. i do want to mention what trump himself is sad. he says that these returns show how successful he's been . and that he was able to use tax deductions to create jobs. so to wrap that up, i mean there is no law requiring presidents to publish their tax returns, but tradition a has called for them to do so. president joe biden. # released his return, stating back 22 years when he was running for office. but trump, they're breaking with tradition. to me, tell us this. could these documents cause an issue for donald trump on his run for
4:05 am
president in 2024. it doesn't appear that they will. i mean, observers here seem to get that these documents do not indicate any sort of legal wrong doing and present from supporters have stood squarely behind him through state and federal investigations and controversies. so these tax returns are not likely to shake that core group of supporters and for moderate democrats, this is for them proof that the former president has lied once again. so although it's important to have these documents on record, especially if we know that he's running again in 2024, it is not likely to move the needle much if at all public interesting stuff, thanks to me dw, assuming so misconduct in washington dc. manufacture vladimir putin as cold for closer military cooperation with china. the russian president was speaking during a video summit with the chinese leader shooting pain. though beijing has not condemn the worn ukraine. it also hasn't given russia any direct support. moscow's
