weapons stalks are running down key if has repeatedly called for the west to help them apart from the energy aid, of course, ukraine still needs more weapons and ammunition because the best way to protect our civilians from russian terror is to defeat russia. can germany send more military hardware from the start? olaf schultz. his answer has been consistent. as the solder sierra community, very trying to apply weapons are helpful and can be used. and we have done that in the past, and we will continue to do that. and to the successes of the ukrainian army show that we have supplied effective weapons. anti tank weapons is anti aircraft weapons and a lot of ammunition, few wanted to on others foster too good. so far, germany has delivered around 2000000000 euros worth of military equipment. that's only a 10th of the amount committed by the united states. but it is the largest

e u contribution among the arm sent by berlin iris t long range air defense systems whose value is increased given russia's concentration on air strikes. germany has also st key battlefield weapons like mars t rocket launchers and panza help it's a 2000 self propelled how it says in both cases, a lack of spare thoughts is cause delays when those systems needed repair. but they have been effective and more have been promised. what ukraine really warms, though, is state of the art heavy tanks like the left to these they say, would help when the ground war the german government has so far, refused, pointing out that other nato countries have also not provided the most modern tanks in state berlin has delivered leopards to nato allies like the supply to check forces in december, part of an exchange deal under which the check sent soviet designed

t 72 tanks to ukraine. evidence, according to the chancellor, that germany is doing its bit give minds on the program together with the friends and partners. we have resolutely supported ukraine with money, humanitarian agents and also with a weapon season. we will continue that support for as long as it is needed. the us has now agreed to send ukraine patriot defense systems. some of its most advanced weapons. the german government has offered its patriots to nato member poland, but so far says it cannot spare any for deployment in ukraine. meanwhile, keith continues to ask the west for more of those powerful weapons, much of what it has seems unlikely to make the decisive difference in this war. german defense minister christina lamb christ has ignited a political controversy with a new your video message on her personal instagram account. she says the war and

ukraine has brought her fascinating experiences and meetings with wonderful people . her tone sparked as social media uproar, as well as calls for her to resign. the ministry says the video is the minister's personal matter, div water. the ministers in land place were speaking against a background of new year celebrations. what is raging in the middle of europe? for me, the spend that i gather many special impressions. there are many encounters with interesting and wonderful people. for this, i wish to express my heartfelt thing. let's bring indeed of these political correspondent hands, but aren't for more on this. so, hans, what's been the reaction in germany to this video by the defense minister? the reaction has been huge. there's been a huge wave reaction, especially in social media ranging from this belief to derision to anger and many, many calls for the minister to does to resign or to be fired and factor in the
3:16 pm
media, but also from opposition. politicians, of course, a was also been interesting is that there has been very little reaction officially from the government. the government itself has said it does not want to comment on this. no one has rushed to the defense of the defense minister from her own party. there's been a deafening silence from her political allies. so all in all, i think one can say she's really and caused quite a lot of dismay with this video. well has, we should also mention that this is not the 1st time that the defense minister has been mired in controversy. what else has she been criticized for? well, one of the things that cause a lot of public discussion was some months ago when she took her adult son long on an official trip in the government helicopter, she said she paid for that trip. everything was above board,
3:17 pm
but it was regarded as a very strange and unusual and full step basically for the defense minister. there also been several statements by her about weapons deliveries to ukraine, which have been regarded as inappropriate or not sensitive enough to the needs of ukraine or to the feelings in ukraine. and of course, she is defense minister at a time when german defense system and the nato defense system. the european defense system is under a lot of strain. so she is playing a central role in all of this and has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. under these circumstances, the way she has been operating in recent months has really not strengthened her position. it does seem that it is quite tenuous at the moment. well, you mentioned arms deliveries to ukraine, so what can kids expect in terms of weapons deliveries in the coming months from
3:18 pm
germany? the 1st answer to that is more of the same and that's actually a good thing because things to get kids to destroyed ammunition gets used. and so more ammunition, more trucks, more defense systems, defense systems and so on. all of that, including things like sleeping bags, how much the winter gear, and so that's sort of important. but the big question is whether really sophisticated systems will be delivered to ukraine and there germany has been very reticent. the main question is around the major battle tanks, but also air defense systems. i think germany will only step ahead and deliver these systems if this is done together with nato. and there is some discussion with a native the net, or general secretary is pushing for that to happen. if they decide to do that, then germany will pull along the w political correspondent, hands brant hands. thank you so much. let's get you up to speed now and some of the other stories making news. this our the international monetary

3:20 pm
to declare an end to the coven 19 pandemic. later this year. but officials still warn, there is still a danger of deadly new variance emerging. let's take a look now at where we stand after 3 years of the pandemic. since the 1st outbreak in china, nearly 6700000 people have died. the corona virus claims more than 1500 lives every day, but numbers are much lower compared to last year. the w h show recommends vaccination, but says access to effective vaccines is still unequal, globally restrictions havanese in many parts of the world as people learn to live with the virus. and for more, i'm joined in the studio now by our senior science correspondent derek williams. get to see you, derek. so yeah, it's been 3 years since the start of the pandemic. can we say the worst is indeed behind us? will some experts, particularly here in germany,
3:21 pm
are beginning to say that, but i think that that's really a relative, an assumption. i think it's important to understand that just because an end of the pandemic, even if it were declared tomorrow, we wouldn't stop having cases of coven 19 somehow magically. that wouldn't happen under it's important. understand what a pandemic is. and then like is a, is a, is an infectious disease that, that crosses international borders and affects large regions internationally, maybe globally, and it, and it hits populations and unpredictable ways it fluctuates. a disease only becomes endemic when it becomes more predictable. so it's all about predictability, and at the moment, it looks like the numbers have stabilized to some extent, most places in the world. and so we can guess, may be expected to be declared the pandemic to be over and for it to be an endemic disease. in the future, but of course, the question marcus is, is china. okay, so if we have to assume that we're going to be living with coven, 19 people still be getting sick?
3:22 pm
does it still makes sense to impose regulations or restrictions on travel? for example, like we're seeing right now with people traveling from china who have to take these mandatory tests. can't we just accept that people will have cove it and that's the end of that? well, just not really travel restrictions don't really work. we've seen that with earlier versions of the virus with, with earlier various for example, with on the crime they, they can have a, they can have an effect short term effect that they can slow things down. but they're in our modern network societies. they're not going to stop the transmission across international borders. the question would be then, if of new variant did appear in china. and if these travel restrictions might be able to slow its appearance and other countries, but it's not going to stop it if it's circulating in china, it's going to be circulating in other places then fairly quickly of course, but that's just a theoretical scenario. ok, so there in different approaches to how to slow down the virus or how to even deal
3:23 pm
with the virus. you say these travel restrictions are not particularly effective. there was the 0 cove approach in china. there was the attempt to get hurt immunity in the u. k, in your opinion, what then is the most effective approach for dealing with comment? well, obviously neither of those approaches really worked. in my opinion, locked downs helped i think a lot of experts think that they but they were of course a pretty draconian solution because we had no other solutions at the time that we impose those, those lock downs. i would say that a couple of different measures have really had a big impact on, on the course of the pandemic. one of them, for me would be universal masking. i'm, it's been shown that if everybody is massed up, that can help slow down the transmission of the disease in populations. and then of course, the other one would be the introduction of vaccines very quickly. they, although they don't prevent transmission, they'd have really managed to cut down the transmission of the disease and they've
