a group of 20 right. big members who defied an appeal by former president donald trump, to back mc coffee. mccarthy and dw correspondence to miss a mosque and the joys been off from washington to me. my coffee house now lost 6 votes, the house has a job and we'll gather again in a couple of hours. what can they possibly possibly do different this time? or nobody's really certain, if they will do something different, they're hoping that something might be different. i can tell you what's been happening behind closed doors in the hallways of congress. there is wrangling, horse trading, negotiating, taking place to try to find some sort of compromise that will allow representatives to finally elect a speaker of the house. that is happening on the republican side of the aisle. kevin mccarthy and his supporters are trying to get that 20 or so hard. right. republicans were standing in the way to close ranks behind them. we could possibly also see a different candidate put forth and the names are being thrown around. but as
12:03 am
things stand right now, no candidate has enough votes to be the speaker of the house. and in the meantime, we keep going around around. and i have to say again for our viewers, the reason this is the problem is that until the speaker is elected, the house cannot do anything. they cannot swear. and congressmen and women, they can't vote on policies and they are stuck in a holding pattern. i've been seeing on us media today, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle expressing anger and frustration and over the inability to get this process unstuck, if you will. and that includes president biden. he was asked about this on a trip to kentucky on wednesday, and he said he found this entire chaos as he called it embarrassing that congress can't get its act together essentially. so as to return, the democrats can now help the process get on stock as you say, by helping mccarthy and get something in return in a different era that might have been possible. but politics are really so tribal right now in the u. s. that
12:04 am
a deal between democrats and republicans in this situation would be toxic for many on both sides of the aisle. for one, most democrats are not interested in helping kevin mccarthy in particular. he's really cemented himself on the right wing of the republican party. he is as loyal supporter of the former president, just to give you an example after the storming of the capital 2 years ago, he condemned donald trump only to reverse course a few weeks later and try to block the investigation into what happened. so there really is no love lost there. and even though democrats have been up and down us media today saying this isn't good for the country. they can, in a way, benefit from voters watching this chaos unfold among the republican party as the republicans have promised to hit the ground running. and that is clearly not happening. so in a way, there is something to gain for democrats here to allow this to continue. got to keep going. now we'll have to see what happens in the next few hours. but if mccarthy ultimately wins this, surely he would find himself in a position of weakness as speaker yes,
12:05 am
certainly he would come in battered and bruised. i mean, don't forget that the republicans had hoped to do really well in those mid term elections in november. and they did not when nearly as many seats in congress as they had hope that was already a blow to kevin mccarthy. now we're seeing he can actually control his own lawmakers in congress. and we don't expect that to change if he comes in the speaker on a whole, this hasn't been very good for the republican party. you know, that's hard right? faction of the party. it's just a small number of lawmakers is wielding a huge amount of power over republicans on a whole. they will have to get their house in order, especially as we look ahead to next year old of course, 2024, a huge presidential election. so me get to talk to thank you very much. see me. some of the in washington dc has a look now at some more stories making headlines around the world. french president, emmanuel, my phone, says france will deliver light tanks to ukraine. the announcement came off for a phone call with ukraine's president polity. miss lensky. some other governments

started. it's trip around the world. and the end of the journey is still not in sight. professor steven van goat is an expert on barella g, an head of the belgian institute for health earlier when i asked him about the ears discussions on coordinated entry restrictions on travelers from china. well, it's, it all has to do with a lack of transparency and a lack of trust. i think that's really the issue here. we have difficulty in believing the figures from china. and they're also some distrust that maybe we are not fully aware of what kind of a variety of the fighters are circulating over there. and it's really this, these distrust which is a public sensitivity and also a political sensitivity. and i think this is really what he's playing here and we in belgium, we propose that it would be groups not so much to impose restrictions,

but specifically when people return from china and did the phillips symptoms, we didn't, we didn't one week after returning from china they always get tested, and we also try to characterize the fighters that they have been infected with as a way of doing an independent control to see what kind of mutations are circulating in china. and whether discourse bulls, which the deep of the china is giving us. so that is important, i think do this independent check or surveillance. but for me really restrictions or even asking vaccination certificates and the pre departure testing requirements . i think there of relatively limited to tell you that was stephen uncooked of the belgian institute for health, not russia president vladimir putin has announced the deployment of you hyper sonic cruise myself. he says the frigate, armed with the weapons, is now on its way to the atlantic in a show of force. russia, china,
