g movie mountains. what beast this? yes, i use that. is it. so that was the scene in brazil's capital brazilian. let's bring in our correspond claire richardson. she's in our rio de janeiro. clara. tell us what's happening with protests in brazil now. i terry. well, things looking a lot better today than they did yesterday. you already mentioned some of those camp being cleared out and please saying that they've arrested hundreds of people. now also here in brazil, you're hearing a comparison to the january 6 storing a storming of the capitol in the united states. that's how the media has been describing it. but i think an important thing to point out is that even though we've seen those really shocking images in that report, it should perhaps not come. i such a surprise here in the brazilian case, this is exactly what protesters have been asking for for weeks since the october

elections. we saw both in our support are camped out outside of military headquarters all across the country. and they were well prepared if they came in using code words, we knew that they were going to be calling for both and r o to even oversee a crew. they believed this conspiracy theory that he could somehow know those elections of those results in october. so i think it's important 1st of all, to point out that there's gonna be questions about how the security situation got so bad. but also that this was much longer in the making. the former president, you're both in are, have 4 years cast doubt on the integrity of brazil's elections. you know, that here they use these electronic voting systems. they've been in place since the ninety's and they're widely considered by international observers also by academic researchers here to be safe from manipulation. but there is a huge problem of fake news and misinformation here in brazil, spread it by what's out by instagram. and i spoken to dozens of both in our supporters here, and i would say the vast majority of them,
3:05 pm
i've told me something to the effect that they don't fully trust in the election system. and so it also is important. remember there that this is a bitterly for the election lou law, one by an extremely narrow margin that has contributed to this narrative. and so i think you're seeing it out of the trump playbook. they're going to be tough questions. claire, tell us more about actually who is behind this unrest and how it's being organized, how it's being orchestrated. well, we know there was some communication on social media. we don't know exactly yet. who was behind it, but lula, the new president has said that they are going to seek those people out, that they will be punished. it's interesting that it comes just a week after his inauguration, i was actually in the brazilian den or his integration. when many expected that something like this could happen. instead, it was just a sea of red of people wearing the colors and the marquee probably ordered the workers party that move the part of. and it wasn't until a week later where lula wasn't actually in brazil yet,
3:06 pm
where congress without infection, that we thought that forming of the institution in the capital. so i just mentioned, please think situation is largely coming under control lula is back in brazil. and he's ordered the intervention of federal security forces until the end of the month . he's also called a meeting with governors administered. and i think ultimately, terry, what this shows is that not only was there a breached insecurity, but also ruler, coming in as the new president of brazil is going to have a major uphill battle with this level of political polarization. so you say clear that the government is the current government is now trying to push back very hard against these protests. where do we think it could go from here? i think there will be an investigation of some sort. it's hard to say exactly what will happen. i've told you there is this trust in the electoral system, jen generally, there are the importers of former president, both in our own, who believe this election was stolen, both and for his part actually left before the an observation in late december to

go to the u. s, state of florida and even refused to take part in the official ceremonies of handing over the presidential sash to la. so we have a 4 year term, a head for president and his new government. they're just finding their feet a week after being sworn in. and i think this is going to continue to pose a major problem for his government. not least because many, both in our allies are also in government in the legislature. also in state legislatures and governors are thank you very much, our corresponding claire richardson there in rio de janeiro now to ukraine, where president laudermill lensky, says his troops are on the eastern front of his troops on the eastern front or holding on despite everything the soldiers faced continuous assaults by russian troops and mercenaries around the towns of solar and mood. this part of the dawn bus front has been seen some of the most prolonged fighting of the war. russian military blogs recently reported breakthroughs in those areas,

but neither moscow nor to support the claims spring. and mike martin here, he's a senior fellow at the war studies department of kings college london. why, what can you tell us about the situation on the battlefield in ukraine? good afternoon, terry, as it's specifically the biggest passes the moment around newton's solid as your package said, the russians have been trying to take for about 2 or 3 months, they've suffered extraordinarily high levels of casualties. they're basically using human wave tactics over the last couple of weeks. they've stopped trying to take my food. and now i've moved just to the north buttonwood, this tangled solid, and i think they're trying to flank the ukrainians in back. they failed to take that, although they have made some small amounts of progress, but at great cost the russian mercenary group, wagner,
3:09 pm
is fighting alongside routines. military forces in ukraine. what impact are these mercenaries having so again, around, but most of the soldiers are from the wagner mastery organization. and many of these are actually from national prisons who wants to leave prison to fight the involvement. so as you can imagine, they're not very effective soldiers, many of them are desperate. many of them give up when they get to the front lines, but a lot of them being sought. and recently we saw some, some videos from the head of the wagner group of him, going to visit these mass graveyards of russian ex prisoners in wagner. they're not on their own having a particularly special impact on the battery, but they are providing a large number of untrained troops for the russians to use. mike, i know this is a tough question, but how do you see this conflict playing out in the weeks and months ahead?
3:10 pm
ah, it is a tough question. so i think for the next, let's say 2 months while it's still very, very cold of still snow on the ground in ukraine. that's going to slow everything down. although i think as we can see, the americans, the europeans have just reinforced ukraine again with more weapons. and specifically with some tanks and some inventory fighting vehicles. these are the sorts weapons that you used to go on the offensive. clearly ukraine, we looking to go on the offensive in the spring, if not slightly before. so let's say in about 6 weeks time. overall, i still stick to my prediction that this is going to be over by the awesome of 2023 in ukraine's favor. mike, a number of countries you, you mentioned the u. s. already, but a germany or france or possibly the u. k. could be contributing more heavier
3:11 pm
equipment or how do you see that having an impact on the development of the war? she stood the big shift that we're starting to see now is the move from equipment that can really only be used defensively to other types of equipment that can be used offensively. so specifically on the vehicles the carrion truly when they're resulting on tanks mill. so as one of the countries you mentioned quite a lot of eastern european countries like poland, slovenia lakia. oh, so then ac equipment. so i do start, this is going to start to have an impact on the wall of city italy, as the russian forces are restricted in the amount of new equipment they can make because of sanctions. and so they're having to pull older and older types of equipment out of storage. so what we're seeing is 2 trends. the russians are becoming de equipped and the ukrainians are becoming equipped. and eventually these 2 trends are going to meet him. as i said previously,

ukrainian victory at some point, i think later on this year, mike, i really appreciate your insight. that was mike martin from kings college london. thank you. and meanwhile, western allies are racing to support ukraine with weapons and humanitarian aid. as mentioned, russian missile and drone attacks have hit your crane, civilian or infrastructure, especially hard dw, visited a logistics center in germany that supplying much needed equipment for the rebuilding effort. tucked away in southern germany, one of the largest humanitarian logistics operations. and the country's history is underway from here, equipment worth 70000000 euros has already been dispatched to ukraine. but for security reasons, the exact location of the site has to stay under wraps. this logistics and from here this logistics center is the hub for civilian a li, unlocked at the federal government suppliers. women got to,

3:19 pm
pakistan is echoing that call. it is seeking billions of dollars in aid from the international community to help fund its huge rebuilding job. and what is expected to become a major test case. and determining who pays for disasters caused by climate change or more now i'm joined by d. w reporter a business java. finish. how far has pakistan come in recovering from those devastating floods? 30 the situation remains dire for millions of pakistanis. ah, there are still fife of 1000000 pakistani is that are homeless and living in mate makes you camps by the government, dis, flooding affected 33000000 pakistan is the one in 7. pakistan is what affected i've spoken to some it workers and they tell me that these people are not ready to go back to their homes because their homes have been damaged. that crop plans are under water. they've got to have been killed. so their livelihoods have been lost,
3:20 pm
and if you speak to these people, they said that it will take them years to get back on their feet. and people who have returned to their homes or, or didn't leave, did areas. they are now forced to live. i don't stagnant polluted flood waters, which means that their children are getting sick of waterborne diseases, of infections, even snake bites. you an estimate, fear that nearly 20000000 people in pakistan still new to need humanity and assistance. so the situation remains very difficult for millions of pakistani. so we've got this conference going on in geneva right now for aid. a previous un appeal for aid for pakistan produced only a tiny fraction of what pakistan was looking for. can pakistan expect to get more from this conference? it's happening in geneva, the park, a fancy that it needs $16000000000.00 us dollars for the reconstruction and

rehabilitation of a people and communities affected by flood. ah, it is only asking half of that amount from the international community bucket found faith the devastation caused by flooding if a huge climate injustice to the country, because it emits less than one percent of 40 global greenhouse gas emissions. but it is bearing the brunt of what to rich countries are emitting. so it's asking the international community to help august on the happily date and reconstruct infrastructure that is the climate resilient. because back if and believe that it will continue to faith climate change induce disasters a dis, flooding cause hundreds of bridges to collapse. thousands of schools and clinics where perished. i'm so if a huge devastation, 2000000, nearly 2000000 homes were lost for park. if it needs to reconstruct, but it is asking international corporation for long term sustainable corporation that helped build bucket that helped make arcus and climate resilient. and the u. n

. is advocating pakistan's case, and we can hear what the un chief set at the conference. we must match the right response of the people of pakistan with our own efforts and massive investments to strengthen their communities for the future. rebuilding pakistan in a resilient way will run in excess of $16000000000.00 us dollars and far more will be needed in the longer term un secretary general. there you are suggested earlier that, that these floods and inner have been attributed to climate change are many people . of course sir, support that view. how vulnerable is pakistan to the effects of global warming? aka found is among the top 10 countries that are affected most affected by climate change. buckets on is facing an increase in frequency and solidity of tropical storms, cost and rains. august on the glaciers are melting its home to more than 7000
3:23 pm
clashes got the highest number of glaciers outside the balls. i myself have seen some of these pleasures and it's a spectacle, a fight to watch. but these glaciers are melting at a dead. a fine rate, which means that they are causing flooding, even in the most remote parts of the country and people and the communities are displacing from a hazardous place. and some of these communities had never seen anything like that . like this on has also experienced heat waves. last year, temperatures hit 51 degrees celsius and it's not think it's not something that is has recently happened in 2010. floods affected a more than 20000000 people in pakistan. and in 2015 on a heat wave in karachi caused are more than 1000 people cause killing of more than 1000 people. so focused on these i 1st hand beaten thing,
