4:02 pm
remaining protesters in their makeshift champs and have begun dismantling or tense . officers had been ordered to remove all protesters from the area which they occupied since the election in october. this comes as brazil's newly elected president, louisa not yielded a silver blamed his predecessor for the violence and promised a tough response. also, nora has condemned the violence on twitter saying, ransacking public buildings had nothing to do with peaceful protest. thousands of protest as on the roof of brazil national congress on the ground some smashing their way inside the supreme court. these are supporters of brazil's former president jai, ear, bull sanara. they still refused to accept that he lost the election last october. and they're taking that anger out on

anything they can find. 7 president lula da silva, he wasn't in the capital as the chaos unfolded, condemned the protest as blaming his predecessor over the fall of issue. these are real vandals destroying everything in their path. we believe that there was a lack of security, and i want to tell you that all of those who did this will be found and punished full sanara. he is in self imposed exile in the us. posted a series of tweets, including peaceful demonstrations in the form of the law are part of democracy. however, depredations and invasions of public buildings as occurred to day, as well as those practiced by the left in 2013 in 17, break the rule. he also wrote, in addition, i repudiate the baseless accusations attributed to me by the current head of the

executive of brazil. after several hours, police and security services regained control using tear gas and rubber bullets. hundreds of both scenarios support is have been arrested. this is an injustice. there are no criminals. here we were just protesting. we want to save the country. as order was restored in brasilia, president lula was back in the capital, surveying the damage with a country on high alert. the international community has rallied to support lula and to condemn sunday's violence. now the ukraine were president volunteers. zalinski says his troops on the eastern front are holding on despite everything. the soldiers face continuous assaults by russian troops and mercenaries around the

towns of solid, r and mood. this part of the dawn bass front her seen some of the most prolonged fighting of the war. russian military blogs recently reported breakthroughs in those areas, but neither moscow nor key of support the claims of more on the situation in ukraine. a sport spoke a short while ago with mike martin, the senior fellow at the war studies department of kings college london. good afternoon, terry. say, specifically the biggest passenger moment around newton solid as your package said, the russians have been trying to take for about 2 or 3 months, they've suffered extraordinarily high levels of casualties. they're basically using human by tactics. over the last couple of weeks, they stopped trying to take my food and now moved just to the north apartments. this town called solid and i think that trying to flank the claims in, but they fail to take that although they have made some small amounts of progress,
4:06 pm
but at great cost the russian mercenary group, wagner, is fighting alongside routines. military forces in ukraine. what impact are these mercenaries having so again, around, most of the soldiers are from the wagner mastery organization. and many of these are actually from person to leave prison, to fight in. so as you can imagine, they're not very effective soldiers. many of them are desperate, many of them give up when they get to the front lines. but a lot of them being sought. and recently we saw some, some videos from the head of the wagner group of him, going to visit the mass graveyards of russian ex prisoners in bog. now, they're not on their own having a particularly special impact on the battery, but they are providing
4:07 pm
a large number of trained troops for the russians to use. mike, i know this is a tough question, but how do you see this conflict playing out in the weeks and months ahead? ah, it is a tough question. so i think for the next, let's say 2 months while it's still very, very cold of still snow on the ground in ukraine. that's going to slow everything down. although i think as we can see, the americans, the europeans have just reinforced ukraine again with more weapons. and specifically with some tanks and some inventory fighting vehicles. these are the sorts weapons that you use to go on the offensive. clearly ukraine will be looking to go on the offensive in the spring, if not slightly before, so let's say in about 6 weeks time. overall, i still stick to my prediction that this is going to be over by the autumn of 2023 in ukraine's fiber. mike a number of countries you,
4:08 pm
you mentioned the u. s. already, but a germany or france or possibly the u. k. could be contributing more heavier equipment or how do you see that having an impact on the development of the war? still, the big shift that we're starting to see now is the move from equipment that can really only be used defensively to other types of equipment that can be used offensively. so specifically on vehicles, the caring for the when they're resulting i'm tanks model so as well as the countries you mentioned quite a lot of eastern european countries like poland, slovenia, slovakia also done ac equipment. so i do start, this is going to start to have an impact on the wall. upstate italy, as the russian forces are restricted in the amount of new equipment they make because of sanctions. and so they're having to pull older and older types of equipment out of storage. so what we're seeing is 2 trends the russians are becoming dea equipped on the ukrainians are becoming equipped and eventually these
4:09 pm
2 trends are going to meet him. as i said previously, a ukrainian victory at some point, i think later on this year, mike, i really appreciate your insights. that was mike martin from kings college london. thank 8. thank. as mentioned, western allies are racing to support ukraine with weapons, but they're also supplying humanitarian aid russian missile and drone attacks of hit ukraine civilian infrastructure, especially hard dw, visited a logistics center in germany, the supplying much needed equipment for that rebuilding effort, tucked away in southern germany, one of the largest humanitarian logistics operations and the country's history is underway. from here equipment, west 70000000 euros has already been dispatched to ukraine. but for security reasons, the exact location of the site has to stay under wraps. this look different from
4:10 pm
here in this logistics center is the hub for civilian ali, hemlock at the federal government suppliers, women dot, due to its vast facilities and the support of all the volunteers to be loose through the details didn't want to push. often these packages include heaters lights and sleeping bags for later delivery, but with russian attacks and ukraine's energy infrastructure power generators are key. bottom was all down to this. there's no god as it this is. it's a claim that is through michael. yeah, this is one of the smaller power generators meter gainer just one of these can power abouts. 10 households teen laser was for so for the pick on the technical side, out to fight works very much like a car or a bicycle van and diesel multiple. there's a diesel engine that power the machine that out to and then just as with a dynamic, you know, motion is converted into electric energy to be vehicle moved is it's an electrical

energy, t h w, as a german federal agency and specializes in humanitarian support. volunteers make this whole operation possible. of the next days, these volunteers carve out time out of their daily life to deliver machinery to the polish ukrainian border. alex and a colombo is in charge of this convoy. team already savvy team efforts are very important because the key is to solve problems together analysis and we have many different skills on board. and we compliment each other against was i was a good combo, usually works as a mechanical engineer at an automotive supplier by law. his employer is obliged to give him time off for his t h. w duty as is shown through. it's nice to know that we can help people who really need it. i don't see if we can provide support from here in germany. i think we should do it and they said miss o 2 over 200, t h w, volunteers participated an aide missions to ukraine last year. this is the 1st
4:12 pm
mission of the new year about 2000 kilometers, lay ahead of them. turning to our top story for a moment now as supporters of brazil's former president joe bosa, narrow ransack the national government buildings in the country's capital brazilian were for more on that were joined now by thomas zuba on. he's a german m p from the opposition. c s u party and he's chair of the parliamentary group on german brazilian friendship. thanks for being with us. what do you make of the unrest we're seeing in brazil? oh, this is a very heavy assault on the house of democracy in britain as the biggest democracy in latin america. it's and that's all at the same time, not only of the parliament but also on the government institutions and on the independent judiciary. and that's why the entire world is broken extra. now,
4:13 pm
resilient democrats have just been together now, and they are the sort of there of democrats around to warn you twitter earlier that democrats must take action when democracy is attacked. is germany doing enough to protect democracy at home and abroad? we had a need similar attempts to seize the german bo this pack in the demonstration a few years ago. and there are parallel as to the attacks on the capitol hill in the united states. exactly 2 years ago. so everybody and to be clear that democracy need democrats. and it's after that to make sure that the majority can protect the decency of democratic institution. yes. in democracy political minority is protected to majority cannot
4:14 pm
tolerate radical ryan. there we have to stand together and make sure that the majority of towns and immigrant big election, the retired democratic election has to be accepted by everybody. aside from those words of support we're hearing from you now is germany doing anything to help brazil in this situation. kennedy help while joan took part in the integration their money a week ago for president and the german minister for the environment already visited brazil and started again the funding for climate protection and the rain forest in brazil. so there is a lot of awareness of the different situation of the division in the brazilians and patty. back in the end,
4:15 pm
we are prepared to work together. it's up to the democrats of brazil now to stand together. and they, as i said, the entire solidarity of democrats and not as a commentary, nobody but as a democrat democracy, applewood law, and order. mr. han, how much of a threat do you think brazil's new government is facing right now? i was saying it shows division in the brazilian society. it's very close to sides of the presidential election. i think in the federal states and germany to state the balancing power as various dimensions. there is a balancing power,
4:16 pm
the only which we in the government and power. and there is also a balance of power between federal level and state levels. rented 7 governors in brazil and regional power as well. so there's enough room to bring in was that strong or powerful and it's up to the next democrat to organize balancing on german parliamentarian thomas silver horn. thank you very much. thank you. to catch up on a few other stories making headlines around the world today. a un conference has brought in pledges of over $8000000000.00 for flood recovery in pakistan. the aid has come from over 40 countries, private donors and financial institutions. experts say climate change played a role in the disaster which killed more than 1700 people and displaced. millions of frances has condemned iran for using the death penalty against demonstrators
4:17 pm
demanding greater respect for women. the pope's remarks made in his yearly speech to diplomats at the vatican were his strongest since the start of iran's protests. they followed the death in september of a young woman in police custody. nearly a lifeline for millions of syrians is in the spotlight as the un security council has just passed a resolution to continue international aid deliveries to the country for months. russia, an ally of the syrian government, has been pushing to end deliveries to sirius north western italy province, which is the last hold out of rebels the crossing at bob. i'll hawaii is now the only route for international aid. if the crossing point were to be closed, the aide group say, millions of syrians may not survive the winter. for people in serious north west, facing extreme hunger, the boat could be a matter of life and death. it's cold in the tent who are few time res lives with
4:18 pm
her grandchildren and northwest syria at night below 0, her son brings would for the stove. but the cold is just one of their problems. they've been living in refugee camps for 10 years now. and week in week out, food is scarce. why has brought in and you know, what time do you run? it's been a long time since we are any meet and frankly we have nothing. well, my son goes to work every day and earn 20 lira and that's less than a single euro. how is that supposed to be enough for the children? man. they live with more than 300 other refugee families and have moved camp near the city of id live. everyone here depends on aid from international organization. the possibility of interruptions, worries people here controllable 1st law. but the main thing is that the border
4:19 pm
crossing remains open so that we can continue to receive aid supplies. we're not doing well if the crossing closes were finished on the bob and how wide border crossing is the only way food drinking water and medicine can reach northwest syria . syrian president bashar al assad still does not control the area around it, lead after years of war, but he wants to be involved in any a deal. how do you read the regime in damascus? wants to control the flow of aid in the past. when deliveries went through damascus, only a small fraction made it to the other region. i get it live, it's the last stronghold of insurgents and islam of the rebels. they know the government sees them as enemies of the state. if the crossing is closed, it will create a humanitarian crisis here. then they will suggest shipping the
4:20 pm
a via the government and then nothing will get here. the army will steal a launch. i figure it out right now. rou, time face, and her grandchildren only have one meal a day, and even that is under threat. join now by constantine vitro, he's a policy advisor specializing in the middle east in north africa. please be able foundation in berlin. thanks for joining us. first of all, the un security council has voted unanimously to keep this crossing open. was that ever in doubt? yeah, it wasn't out at least, at least in my opinion, because it was not clear how russia would react in a broader context of the or that's a hybrid warfare, the waging on, on, on europe and the content for ukraine. but in the end, i think what have made them let the resolution pop. the 2 main points 1st,
4:21 pm
very concerning political development that we saw on the recent days, like the re approach between turkey and the russian. and the syrian regime of russia would have vetoed the resolution. the 3 approach meant in which they invested heavily would have been destroyed. and 2nd for them, they have, i think, more advanced than keeping this mandate. because the way they have a lot of leverage involved with the members of the us, you and the see. and also western humanitarian don't like 1st thing them into things. they don't want to, especially into activities somewhere between early recovery and, and reconstruction or across the line convoys and so on. so i think they're, they came to the conclusion for them that it's better when looking at potential leverage to keep the mandate. so i'm pretty sure it wasn't that humanitarian decision. we're in a situation where it's up for debate to every 6 months, whether that border crossing and serious stays open. how did we get here?
4:22 pm
actually the 1st resolution resolution 21652014, was also for 6 months. but then it was decided that the thought of the mechanism is working quite well to decide at, for extension every year. but in 2020 russia started using this resolution as a political tool. so they started with removing border crossing. so in the beginning they were for border crossings, one from jordan, one from iraq to from tricky. and in 2020, they started removing border crossing and it started introducing new language into the resolution, especially concerning reconstruction in cross line con was and they somehow recognized that a shorter span is better for them because the way they can keep up the pressure under, under west members in the, in the you, in the see and for them, for them into activities, they don't want what, why does russia have so much influence here?
4:23 pm
well, but 1st and foremost, they're a permanent member of the un security council. they have which a power and therefore can just block everything. second, there the, the main political and military supporter of the syrian regime. i mean, if russia wouldn't have entered of conflict, and in 2015 we would be looking at a completely different syria today. and they, if they have boots on the ground and day, they defend the regime in every international arena. and yeah, because of their power. and you want to see that can just force other members into accepting into accepting their will. i mean, if you look at the cross line convoys, for example, there is no added humanitarian value in cross plan convoys around 50000. people are fed through cost. con was each month compared with cross border convoys. there are
4:24 pm
$2700000.00 people each month, month reached with cross border system. so it's just it's just a political tool for them, right. and not a humanitarian one. konstantin visual policy advisor to ab foundation. thanks for speaking with us. thank you for having me. now back here to germany, police have gathered near a coal mine and the western part of the country preparing for what could become a violent confrontation. climate activists are refusing to allow the town of loots allowed to be demolished, to make way for the expansion of the gods. why the coal mine? the german government recently gave a greenlight to coal companies to increase production after losing his major source of energy from russia. climate protesters say that's a step in the wrong direction. these giant excavators at digging their way across the landscape. dozens of villages have already had to give way to them. let so that is supposed to be the next. it's residents have already moved out. but more than
4:25 pm
a 100 climate activists have moved in to stop the dig as as, as natural them. it's very emotional, of course to see how the wheels of the dick is excavate more and more coal and to know that lives are threatened in the global south and continued to be threatened by. but that's my way here. but because here we can really change something here. the cliff vasa and at van come energy company on w e has been granted permission to expand the excavation. they say the co beneath the village is needed to secure germany's energy supply. but climate act to this don't agree there against any further expansion of fossil feels. they've been putting up barricades. the police are set to clear the village at any time when cannons the here for you can't get rid of us peacefully. if the police stay
4:26 pm
peaceful and just ask us to leave, we won't leave in because below us are 280000000 tons of coal and they must be burned in the police are hoping that the resistance will remain non violent, but they are prepared to clear the vintage by force if necessary. wellington for gun that we've already witnessed a few stones being thrown in recent days and some bottles too. we've also discovered a few places around lou to heart where stones have clearly been stored to be used later. likely fontainebleau the on to this, to being supported by some well known musicians. they can log in on them. so i can also draw full, fasten, people came to a recent concert in the village study stuff. it's awful because so many people are coming here and the awareness has really grown. we're all in pretty good spirits at
4:27 pm
the moment. is pin tim squished among the bottom. an exact date when the vintage will be cleared hasn't been set whenever that happens, but the police and the activists are prepared. you're watching dw news. just reminder of our top story were leaders have condemned the storming of brazil's democratic institutions. supporters of brazil's former president gyal boston are of ransacked the national congress, the supreme court in the presidential palace in the capital, brazilian watching the w news up next. our science program to more today. thanks for being with ah, with
