4:31 am
accompanying dw traveling reporters and the endless adventurer youtube. allison and eric dealer on their tour through central europe in an electric camperdown will be taking us to tourist hotspots in germany, austria and italy, with things kick off in the south of germany and new to the capital of area. i everyone, my name is eric and i have l hello. and we are teaming up with dw travel and going up electric camper band road through year. we have done a lot of road trips in our travels, mostly in the us, and almost always with big gas guzzling vehicle. but this time we're doing things a little bit differently. since we're in an electric camper being that means no gas required y'all, but it only gets just over 300 kilometers for a full charge. so that means we're gonna have to be a little bit more strategic with when and how we recharge. yeah, that's going to be super important because we're l around 2000 kilometers here.
4:32 am
starting up here in germany, they will be going to austria, northern italy all the way down to the coast, and then eventually making their way back here. and our challenge is to discover as much as humanly possible, while also being a little bit more eagle context and what would be on our typical road trip. so that's going to be no gas, no disposable cubs. and really just reducing our weights as much as we can. we may fail at this goal, but we're going to do our best. all right, in that time we get this road trip officially underway. we're heading about 100 kilometers south germany. tall is let's do with the guys. we've stumbled on the cutest little germantown that we're driving through . we want to take a stab of pronouncing garbage part partic, kirchen. yeah,
4:33 am
garments part of kirk and that's the one. but it's pretty incredible. it is super charming in the fitting of the base of all these mountain clouds are whispering around. if we didn't have a date with the tallest mountain in germany, we would have to stop here again. i'm not gonna lie. when we landed in munich, i wasn't super stoked because i wasn't ready to be back in a big city. but now that we've left and we're in the countryside, i'm realizing how much i missed here, of these views, these tiny towns, if just so beautiful and exciting ah ah, we have made it to the very 1st campsite of our road trip. it is actually at the zig spits resort and it sits just beneath the mountain. that's it ran over there.
4:34 am
you can't tell it's a lot taller than that, but the clouds are covering the very tip it up. yeah, it is so freaking epic. yeah. we have such a great view til, and y'all, it has its very own access to this cable car that runs from the bottom here at the campsite. oh, the web to the top. apparently there is a restaurant up there. i think there's hiking, there's all sorts of stuff where for sure going to be doing that. but before we do, i think we gotta charge this baby app if we can figure it out. yeah, so so of course our vehicle comes with the typical connector to charge it, but it also comes with a whole heap of adapter. so let's see if we can find the right one. i think this one matches the pedestal over there. the way it works is just line up the orange dots that should kind of pop right on. and what's right rent with this chord here has this juice booster thing. i don't really know how we use this, so we're just can see what happens. it is, plug it in, any of it use of the filament.
4:35 am
think with, like it goes closer, something open that up in well this light came on and its flashing green. oh, so with the for georgia, i do, i think that were charging we got a little red light right there. i would expect it to be green, but those are charging right. oh yeah, chicken up charging completed in 10 hours. 20 minutes. holy cow. oh, good thing. were staying overnight. now that we've got this baby charging, let's take a look on the inside. let's start with the back. when you open it up, you'll notice a system of slides, and this 1st one here is actually your kitchen. in this 1st slide, you have all of your dishes and some cleaning supplies. the 2nd compartment holds all of your eating utensils, as well as a bunch of pots and pans that you can put with. and this 3rd compartment is probably the coolest because it actually has a functioning think that so need,
4:36 am
it's actually battery powered. it runs into here. and when you're done with the water, you just dump it out or dispose of it appropriately. easy. that's right. you guys will? yes, wilhite seats up front. this is so neat. and apparently there is like a whole pool because we can cook in the back and then even if you have a proper living room, it's super cool. no. when it's time to get back on the road, up there right down, slide this back in a place where you go. awesome, an easy. you have you have a living room, n o n. last but not least, we have to show you how this bed works right now. the bed that about half size and it's tucked away in the back. so all you do is pull this leg apple, so it's out of the way the chair also put the car down. well then the whole thing slide up like that. to make it about a full size bed. ha. big enough to sit on. yeah. so that's going to wrap up the
4:37 am
tour of the camper van it is starting to rain and i think it's gonna be raining for the rest of the night. so we are going to set up shop inside. we're gonna chill for the rest of the night and then we'll see you on the top the mountain tomorrow. the next morning they're heading high up on church bits in a cable car. hey guys, we're officially above the cloud. check that out. oh
4:38 am
we took the cable car up to the top and it will cost you $50.00 euros apiece, round trip, but it is worth it just for the views alone. it's absolutely incredible appear. if you're lucky and you come up here on the right day, there will be a cloud in version, which means the cloud are lower than the peak. you're literally up here above the clouds. such bits is the highest mountain in germany at 2962 meters above sea level . it sits in southern germany at the austrian border and there are 3 different lifts they can take you to the top. we took the to rowley zoom spits bon, or flam, st i, right. i a little off that out. okay, but you guys, we can recommend during your trip to germany. check this out. this incredible or what amazing sr here represent the highest point in germany. oh my god, the views are incredible. luckily, we do not have the hike all the way up here, but we did have to do a small. how does it get to the star? that is pretty scary. i got maker with back down
4:39 am
at the top of the mountain. there's this huge complex that it's still good. all sorts of amazing reading. there's restaurants, cafe restrooms, of course. and they have this whole level dedicated to the history of the mountain and building everything up here. and how it all came to be, they even have examples of the train cars from all the different iterations on the train. i'm assuming this is around the eighty's right here. it's been absolutely amazing, just strolling around here and learning about the history of the area. we've sadly spot way too much time up here, but there is so much more to see on the road. so we're gonna get out of here with the next up for the to austria. they'll have to pay told if they want to continue on the roads here coming up in our 1st thoughts, a little steep,
4:40 am
$10.00 euros would lower. what does that like? 12 usd or 70, some like that. i believe this is the 1st and only today. yeah. good. who did the crowns? the i'll come up with. can you speak german? yeah. nick with her doctor. and i'm seeing a sign right there. it looks like car charging. right. so this one should work. hopefully it's the fast one. ah. when we started our drive today, it said we had 316 kilometers till empty, but we had been going through the mountains and so that quickly dropped. we lost about a 100 kilometers in there. it'll be our 1st time doing it at a charging station. i'm very excited because i think it'll go very quickly. this is the way the he said, if you can find one that fits both of these, it's the best and should go the fast and right. do it. i think most
4:41 am
of the time for a little update on how we're doing on our waste reduction go. typically when we do a road trip in the us, it's so easy to just stop for fast food or stop at a gas station. and we'd have a bag of trash usually on day one. but i'm happy to say that this is the only trash we've made just what's in here, which we got a little bit of cheese in me, which we completely forgot. we bought this and then we were like, dang, why did we do that? yeah, bad on us and then we got a bottle of water but we have been refilling this and we'll keep doing that throughout our trip so. so far so good. i think that's but better than i thought we were going to. yeah. and i think everything so far is recyclable, with allison and eric make their way next to madonna in the italian province of self to role in the city. eliza valley with quite the view of the dolomites. i think there's tons to do in the area, hiking to visiting wineries or you can do like us and head down to the old town, which is filled with all of these amazing structures spanning the century is
4:42 am
absolutely beautiful. yeah, it really is not a bad way to spend a day here in italy and you can check out some of the amazing castles in the area like this troutman door of castle, which is known for its sprawling gardens and beautiful panoramic views. yeah, coming up here just for the views alone. it's totally worth it. you can see all the mountains in the area. you can see all the surrounding countryside and the gardens are incredible. they really do cover such a huge area to have hedge maze is over there. there are tons of beautiful, vibrant flowers all over the place and a bunch of really cool look out points. you can get an even higher view of the area . plus there is an easy charging station in the parking lot here at the castle so well were exploring the beautiful gardens. our cars getting all charged up. murano is also known for having some absolutely delicious cuisine. so we're gonna straw around gardens a little bit more. and then i meeting with, ah,
4:43 am
ah, good for lunch, we can do a restaurant called portia brown, which is right here in the old part of the town. the 1st step we have that it's a sampling of all the local meat and a few of the cheeses were what we're really excited for is this spect noodle. so these are bacon dumplings in those delicious broth, normally be covered with chives, but we're not a huge tri hands or no tribes breath out of habit. i really for my name to cut into these dumpling, but i read that it's actually very implying a definitely should cut on their own with a fork. and using a knife is rude. i don't know if that's still true nowadays, but i'll stick with the. i got a beer here. oh yes, we got a local beer and a local line to try and i
4:44 am
time has come to head out of murano. we're actually going to be heading further down south kinda in the middle of nowhere. so we stopped by a grocery store load up on some food. yes, because tomorrow it's sunday. i think a lot of things are close and it's supposed to be stormy. is we've got enough provisions to last just for a couple of a little update on the charging situation. so we told you guys we were charging while we were at the castle. unfortunately, we did something wrong or we didn't tap her card. right. and we did not really charge at all, we're trying desperately to find a charging station. every single one we go to is either not really there or it's deep within a hotel that we're not sure how to access it. now somehow we've been or so stuck in a gated community. not really sure how to get out of here. i guess me live here now . no, it's residence now. ok,
4:45 am
nice lady saw that we were struggling and open the gate for us. so we've left the gated community, at least y'all, i have no idea where i am. i'm pretty sure the one way street. i am going to be absolute wrong way. we had to go to a couple more spots and sadly the pumps were not working. but i think this one is going to be our lucky pump. you got the thing when we used yesterday. there were thing hopeful. it's hard to tell some of these whether not you have to pay for some of them have been free and some of them have a little spot to put a card on there. so it turns out this one does require payment, but it should be charging now. we're in luck where officially charged the we're back on the road, the phillip took a little bit longer than we were anticipating it was about 45 minutes. and unfortunately, the feeling that we stopped that was close down, so there was nothing for us to do that. we had to just kind of hit around in here. and we ended up actually leaving a little bit before with the bullying charge, which now i really think might have been a mistake on our end. we've gone down by about a little over
4:46 am
a 100 kilometer charge. while we've only driven about 80 kilometer, it's going down about double as fast as we're traveling. yes, that's one thing we learned about this electric vehicle is that you really can't trust the range estimation. that a give me actually been on the motorway for those 50 kilometers. we only had a couple of turn off. so i was not able to go down quickly. but all that aside, we are back on the road and we figured this would be a good opportunity to give you guys an idea what it's like driving the electric bar . now that we've had it for a few days, actually just like driving any car, accelerate. just like you would expect the air conditioning works, all of the amenities are just fine. i don't know if i'm expecting it to drive and really the big difference is really just that it makes, obviously, when you start up the gas engine while you're driving it in here and it makes a lot of found, this doesn't make out at all of the sound of a gasoline engine, you just kind of hear this calm with
4:47 am
also just really nice that the came for me and it contains. so that means that anywhere we go, we can basically have everything we need to stay the night. and as you might expect, you can also get a little bit cramped on the inside because we have all of our luggage in here. we have over here. and then of course the 2 of us. so it was pretty tight quarters the 1st night that we said was actually raining outside which was kind of challenging because that meant it got outside and it came in and we would track a bunch of mud everywhere. so basically we just have to stay on the inside. fortunately, there are likely going to be bad storms tonight and on through tomorrow we decided to look ourselves in the air be up in the hills so that we can see nice and dry and it, we don't have to worry about charging for a couple of days right fingers crossed that our charge last long enough to get us to our destination and that destination is levy cortez make a small city and south to roll at around 500 meters. ah. so it's gonna be pretty close getting up there because right now our range is going
4:48 am
down for about 5 to 10 kilometers for every one kilometer because we're going up the hill and there's just a whole bunch of switch back to get up to where our air b and b is and theoretically the meter shows that we have half the battery left. so i think we're gonna make it, but it's gonna suck all the juice down just to get up this hill. that's crazy. yeah . destination on the right. we meet you guys with a little bit of charge to spare and we're at the tippy top of this mom. we got to the end of the road and it turned into like this nasty little almost gravel road over here. yeah. we wanted to get away from the crowd then. oh, we did it. we have arrived at our italian chalet. we told you guys were going to try to charge our vehicle here. so this is what we had to do because no outside outlets. we got to plugged up here, got it, going up into this is actually where were staying. so that is just plugged in right here to that outlet. and it goes right on down to the car. how long does the se to
4:49 am
charge um 14 hours? 14 hours. that's not so bad, and were super low. we have fowler. ah, we've got some hot tips for your bucket list. ah romantic corner tread hotspot for food and some great cultural memorials to boot d w. travel off. we go in time for allison and eric dealer to move on to lake. gotta the largest lake in italy in the north of the country with the water is this amazing crystal clear flow . it has these beautiful rolling hills with vineyards, little villages, italian villas, speckled throughout the camp site. the we're at today is called clamping resort weekend, and it is an amazing spot. they have all these different pitches for caravans, which is what we're in right now, complete with private bathroom over there,
4:50 am
which we'll show you guys in just a minute. but there are also all these different types of accommodations they have . these tend like structures that look like a ton of understand. they're a little smaller cabin type of structures dotted all throughout the property. somewhat epic, lake views some that are kind of more nestled into the woods. so we're going to show you guys around our campsite a little bit. we thought of have a bathroom, you know, maybe in the state. it would probably be kind of outhouse like. this is actually uneasy. take this out, this is me please find in an apartment super clean, super wait a whole toilet whole shower, like even like a towel drying rack. ah, i love europe. i i gotten all set up in our campsite and we have our mobile kitchen here out and ready to cook with making some sort of stew. we just had a bunch of left over vegetables from our travels. i'm gonna put it all together in
4:51 am
this and make some delicious dinner here. i mean how legit of this look looks like you got a little kitchen all the so it's like it's like allison's little cooking show. just take whatever much you haven't throw in apartment making as many that there's actually what we're doing. the dinner is served. yeah. check it out. not too bad at all. huh. oh, definitely not stu. it's just noodles and pastor's house with a bunch of a veggies. all right, we're going to eat our delicious dinner. this camp site has wise who are probably gonna watch a little movie and our camper van. and then tomorrow we are going to go visit this really cool place on lake garda. there is a peninsula that sticks out for the castle on it and we are all about some castles . we'll see there. good aim.
4:52 am
thank . good morning, everybody there and welcome to sir me on a this city a very, very special because it is not just the city by the way, this is a city in the lake. yes, it is on the skinny peninsula that goes, jetting out into lake garda. so it is completely surrounded by this amazing green crystal clear water. it's also just a beautiful city. you have all the stone streets that you get to walk through. epic li, old preserve buildings. they do allow cars, though, they gotta watch out for that when you're walking, talking with them. when you come to the city, you have to visit the castle, which is one of the best preserved castles in all of italy. it was built in the 13th century and has a man made harbor those actually built to protect the castle ships. we're going to walk around the castle for
4:53 am
a bit and taking the views and then go explore more of the town. with i could see myself being a princess at this castle. maybe the queen who knows, you know, dream big little girls out there. at the very tip of the peninsula, you're gonna find these incredible old ruins. believe it or not, these are the remnants of an old villa that belong to a roman emperor in the years 27, b. c to 1480. so these are incredibly old. they belong to octavius caesar. i mean that guy had some epic taste. can you imagine building a villa on a peninsula like this surrounded by the epic lake b a i'm digging this little peninsula. it's so interesting because you walk in to the castle. it seemed very medieval, a very european and then you come back here to these olive trees and these ruined

4:55 am
we tried to play the head this time and we found the charging station in advance. oh it's there. i see it back there. well, will you be able to charge that tech? we made sure it had a restaurant attached to it. mm hm. this one will work, but i think this is the floor one. this should be the fast that we are still trying to figure this all out, but i think you gotta scan your card, but for you even. well, that's a not authorized thing. we got this to work. finally, already we are all charged up back on the road and we are going to be trading in that late life for the coast to live y'all. that is right. we're headed down the coast to the mediterranean sea to check out the land, working with terry. and it should be absolutely beautiful down here and that's going to do it. but this episode of the camera being road trip. i hope you guys enjoyed it and i hope you're going to tune in the next couple of the road. there's
