schultz has not given his approval. also coming up, police in california to find the gunman suspected of killing 10 people at a dance hall dead inside a bath. the bow shooting is casting a shadow over chinese lunar new year celebration is across the country. and in the buddhist league, bruce endorsement thrill their home fans as they return from the winter break to wind a 7 gold match without pool ah hello em terry martin. good to have you with us. we begin with signs of movement on the question of supplying ukraine with german made battle tax. germany's foreign minister on alina bow box now says berlin will not object to poland, sending it's leopard to tax to key. if this has,
8:02 am
it is long requested the tags to bolster its defenses against russia's assault, germany has so far held back from supplying the tank scent, even blocked other allies. from doing so, 3rd, countries need berlin's approval to export the tangs, but poland has indicated is prepared to send them even if there is no agreement with germany. free indeed of your political correspondent, thomas sparrow. here, thomas, do germany's foreign minister and chancellor have conflicting views regarding tank deliveries to ukraine. well, what this essentially shows what this essentially reveals is that there has been a very big debate within members of the german government. a 3 way coalition. that's a german government, but about what to do with these lepper tanks. you mentioned already that germany has to approve those tanks if they're going to be sent to ukraine. if other countries are going to send them to ukraine and we have seen in the last few days,
8:03 am
different members of the german coalition with different views. but this statement by the german foreign minister also reveals that they could be some movement when it comes to that approval, some of germany's closest allies. also, ukraine have been putting a lot of pressure in recent days for germany to give that approval so that ukraine can start receiving these german mate tanks. so all in all, it does show on the one hand, the level of debate. on the other hand, the fact that there does seem to be some movement on the issue when it comes to that approval by the german government. if germany continues blocking other countries from delivering german made weaponry to ukraine, what sort of repercussions could that have thomas? well, there are 2 issues here. one would be if germany sends its own left tanks to ukraine's or from its own bonus via stocks. and other issue would be germany approved. other countries like poland sending their own lepper tanks to ukraine. in both cases,
8:04 am
germany would have to give its approval. in both cases, there has been a pressure from germany's allies for germany to exactly do that. and what this is actually happening and that reluctance or reticence from german authorities. what that is causing is a lot of criticism towards the government here in berlin and in particular towards german chancellor all afterwards, who is seen by some of his critics as a rather reticent leader at a time when he should actually be leading when he should actually be at the forefront of discussions when it comes to sending that military equipment to ukraine. so the 1st political implication would be even more criticism towards berlin, if berlin indeed to seek decides to stop, or at least to slow down other countries from sending those tanks to ukraine. so a lot of international pressure on germany regarding these deliveries of weapons. but what about the domestic scene? does the german government have public opinion on its side regarding military
8:05 am
support for ukraine, thomas? and this terry's actually very important, very interesting because if you look at different surveys that have been published here in germany in recent weeks, you can clearly see that the german public is divided. there was one pole last month with actually showed a slight majority, or at least more people here in germany against the idea of sending those tanks. there have been other holes in recent weeks showing that a certain majority or least more people here in germany wanting to send them. but it's, it's not a clear majority, it's not one side or the other. you can clearly see a division in the german public when it comes to this issue. this has to do a lot with germany's history. a lot with germany's military postulate has to do a lot with germany's political system. we can clearly see that just as the government is divided, you can also see that in a very similar way in the german population. thomas,

thank you very much. our political course while at thomas sparrow. will all this comes as german chancellor hollow schultz was pressed on. the issue following talks with prince president and man woman on in paris, the 2 met to mark 60 years since the landmark alizae treaty paved the way for france and germany's postwar alliance. a hug. and a handshake for 60 years of peaceful co operation. the alizae treaty was signed to end wars and rivalry between france and germany. yet, the anniversary comes while war rages in europe. says for santee, many references. this 60th anniversary has a special meaningful at a time when ukraine is resisting russia's aggression. when the ideal of peace and dialogue has been flouted. when the very hope of a humanist order in europe is threatened. and when the disruptions of the world are shaking up certainties in our countries, on the b,

the eliza treaty was signed by german chancellor conrad out. an hour in french president shall the goal to overcome centuries of hostility. it led the wife of paris in berlin to become the engine of european corporation. the 300 lawmakers from both countries had gathered in the french parliament for a joint session on sunday showed how that partnership lives on despite smiles. the 60th anniversary also comes at a time when the franco german relationship is strange, strategic differences in how to deal with the energy crisis and future defense causing tensions. allies, including france, are also getting impatient with germany over its foot dragging when it comes to giving its approval for german made leopard 2 tanks to be sent to ukraine as their classes. sholtes again stopped short of any pledge of school. it was before i fear this war will last very long time,

and that's why it's important for ukraine to know that will not reduce or support and will continue to act as long as necessary, like thus this principle, which has carried a so the recent times remains important for the future. we only act in close coordination with each other up kristen. when asked if france would send it's like leg battle tanks to ukraine, a manual macro said he wouldn't rule it out. despite their different positions and many issues, my call and shoals made great efforts to show unity and distress the importance of continued franco german partnership. if foreign ministers are due to discuss tightening sanctions only ran when they meet later today in brussels . last week, the european parliament called on each member states to label iran's revolutionary guards as a terrorist group to iran has tasked the guards with stamping out anti government protests that have gripped around since september. but the guards have come under

international criticism for their violent crackdown of protesters, the home of the founder of modern day iran, and it's a religious government in flames. youth versus old age, and the people versus the state. i mean, that state is made up of the elite revolutionary guards who control most of the economy and security, and the clerics lead by supreme leader, ayatollah hammond nay, who make the rules. the regime has long blamed the west for its troubles, including the latest round of protests, kiddo dish moon. why did the enemies, why did america and the zionist regime, conspire against our nation, our country, and our revolution, and create these riots. as the supreme leader said, our country is advancing and the enemies don't want our country to make progress.
8:10 am
only the protesters don't seem to be buying it. the brutality of the security services, the corruption of the revolutionary guards, the decline in living standards as the country strains under sanctions. all feed into a rejection of the ruling classes. and the authorities seem split on what to do about it. there were announcements that the dreaded morality police would be shut down. and the law requiring women to wear had job be relaxed. but it's unclear if either has happened. meanwhile, the executions of protesters have spurred fresh outrage. death to the dictator, the crowd shouts, not death to america as the regime would prefer. and it's not just young women and students getting involved. these auto workers walked off the job to support the demonstrations. no one knows if or when
8:11 am
a reckoning is coming for the guards and the clerics. but the states brutality has guaranteed that the divisions will not go away any time soon from or in this regina by cornelius or bar. he is an associate fellow at the german council on foreign relations and author of the book inside iran. thanks for being with us. so you for ministers are meeting in brussels today to discuss further sanctions against iran. what do you expect to come out of this meeting? well, what we can expect is that a number of individuals, high ranking officials of those revolutionary guards, but also people who work and other parts of the regime. the broadcasting the media, regional governors, people that are personally responsible for this final correct on. they will be put on the sections list. the numbers are up to 3537. this is what we can expect.
8:12 am
so the you is adding people that are responsible for the track down to that census list freezing the assets and dis, allowing them to enter your territory. but the, in the revolutionary guards themselves as a, as a unit, as a, as an entity. you don't expect that that will be declared a and terrorist organization itself. well, certainly not today. and there are many reasons why this is a tricky issue for the particular set during the clip of the united states has already listed it as a terrorist organization. the has sanctions against the revolutionary guards, as part of the nuclear deal, the nonproliferation activities, so they are already under severe sanction listing them. in addition, as a terrorist organization wouldn't change the situation on the ground, it wouldn't make life more difficult for the revolutionary guards. but it's,
8:13 am
it's also a legal question of whether an official army can be a terrorist group. this is not what the, the terrorist list was initially designed or expected to 911 and the terrorist, the texts in united states. so it's a tricky issue that the us to deal with and they haven't made a decision. yes. do iran's leaders really care what europe has to say? well, unfortunately they seem to care less and less. this has to do with the fact that the nuclear deal, it's in limbo disagreements for 2016, which the united states less than 2018 and the europeans couldn't really manage to repair by themselves. this really has weighed on the respect so to say that the iranian regime has for the europeans. nonetheless, the europeans are right to speak out on these issues. they are rights to, to support the protesters as much as they can. voice the concerns about the human

bell ice, the ice age paintings in caves, across southern europe have long been the subject of fascination but the meaning of the symbols drawn by hunter gatherers has always been a mystery. now though, hobby archaeologist in britain says he's cracked a code to help him decipher what those early europeans were saying. julie cave in the south of france was famous for a reason. it contains hundreds of animal paintings drawn by a hunter gatherer us, tens of thousands of years ago. like in numerous other european caves or many of the paintings are accompanied by mysterious markings like these dots. for a long time, no one you were to make of them until ben bacon an independent researcher noticed a pattern. each animal has a dominant number. and these numbers a sense, a horse is a 3, bison,

what they're doing. it's generally the week when they come and generally when they need this quite precise as they contract. maybe 10 or 12 different prey seasons in their area very, very accurately. in the hostile environment where people migrated with the animals, this information could make a difference between surviving and dying. bacon says that the calendar has been used for at least 10000 years until the end of the last ice age. it has been found and caves all over europe, from portugal to ukraine. it shows that hunter gatherers were by no means primitive, but rather clever people who use this form of writing to store vital information. in memphis, tennessee, hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects to lisa marie presley who died earlier this month. the memorial service was held at graceland, the iconic home that belong to her father,
