palestinian civilians lost their lives over the last year, and he urged abbas to de escalate attentions. he also reiterated washington support for a 2 state solution, albeit without proposing any new initiatives. and during his short press briefing and ramallah, your secretary of state antony blank and went on to say this. it's also important to continued to try not only reducing violence but ensuring that ultimately the israelis hausteen's life enjoy the same right. same opportunities. what we're, what we're seeing now, how citizens is a shrinking bright and or not expanding one. and that to we believe the change earlier i asked them is so call a journalist calling based on jerusalem about his take on antony, lincoln's visitor, israel and the palestinian territories. when the secretary of state, of course,

it showed his close ties to israel, he met with the prime minister, the minister of the fans dead. there had this kind of like very close link on security issues. and also all the issues connected to these really society. but what was really a striking where he says statement that he made in rama the kind of sympathy that he expressed towards the palestinians. and also in condemning our or criticizing the kind of policies that the exact israeli government has decided on the last few days. he said that he is opposing the expanding of the supplement project. he's opposing the in regulation of outpost. he is opposing the demolition of palestinian homes. he opposes evictions. these are the kinds of things that we heard saturday night from the israeli government. these are the kinds of policies that this government wants to promote and blink,

and also of course stress the importance of the 2 state solution and resolving the long running conflict between israelis and palestinians. but that doesn't appear to be too popular with either side at this point. does that, how do we get out of this deadlock and do we need a new generation of politicians? well, blinking himself didn't have any strategy. he said that this is the vision. the 2 state solution and he talked about reducing the tensions, but he didn't say how do we reach to this a 2 state solution or a bus. on the other hand in ramallah was very clear. he said that the, the key is to follow the arab initiative. the arab initiative talks about in is directly withdraw to the 967 borders, the establishment of a palestinian state alongside israel with ease, through sled being the capital of the palestinian state. and this would be the key
9:05 pm
for normalization with the rest of the arab countries with the rest of the muslim world. on the other hand, nathan, you know, he brought a different perspective. it would, he was speaking a, yesterday. he was saying that 1st of all, israel has to engage with the arab world, reach more normalization with the arab countries. and then the palestinian question will be solved. he doesn't say how and with this government that supports more settlements. clearly a palestinian state is not on the agenda at home, or was lincoln's visit to ensure he has influence over the further course and events in the middle east, including of course the working towards a solution of the conflict. yeah, well did a demo cuz they don't have any plan now. so they just want to kind of like lower the flames. they, they gave a good boost to the movement here in israel. that is trying to block it. judicial

a lack of political stability and libya has led to the growth of human smuggling, making libya, one of the most important starting points for migrants trying to reach europe. the route to europe via the libyan coast is known as the central mediterranean route, with travelers. most often trying to reach the italian island of la producer or fellow member malta. the european union registered 102500 regular crossings at its external border via the central mediterranean route in 2022 alone . that is an increase of over 50 percent from the previous year. the un missing migrants project reports that $1377.00 migrants died or went missing, attempting this crossing last year, a visible scars of a traumatic escape. 19 year old mohammed is stranded on the coast of libya. his journey began 2 years ago when he left his home and ivory coast. a place where he
9:12 pm
saw no opportunities. really going to show it to the living conditions. there were very difficult, more food i had to drop out of school. then i went looking for work to support my family issues with durham for me. you know, could you will, he came to libya via molly and algeria, his goal to cross over to europe. but while on route violence erupted between the human traffickers and the libyan coast guard, with mohammed in between, he was shot in the leg. the coast guard, then put him into a camp for migrants. when she got down, they insulted us, beat us another boy. we had no rights at all. we were hungry and thirsty. the way they treated us was catastrophic. heard the da, still survival, and libya is a struggle for many of the roughly 700000 migrants here. only one and 7 has entered the country, legally,
9:13 pm
their destinations varying widely. some want to go to europe. others want to work is day laborers in the oil rich country where they can earn more than at home, but competition is stiff. english gilligan was, well there's not a good world for every one. thousands are coming from the year alone and every one is desperately seeking work in the libyan government and the capital tripling is calling on europe to take more responsibility. libby as often just a transit country. it once you're up to invest more in the migrants, countries of origin. people are hungry, they wanna go and eat. and this is a. so what are a stand a bu solution that to what we can do, and this is not a problem of libya or need the italy or martha? it's that combined. and i think also germany has as a big, big role germany, europe mohammed has given up his dream, he now plans to return to ivory coast via un repatriation program. java, mom,
9:14 pm
mom when i know to my mother and she said come home and my dear mother do moved to move. mohammed wants to return home gratefully. after all he has survived. now his greatest wish is to one day be able to walk properly again. and for more were now doin from toronto, i am at body a senior analyst at the global initiative. a non resident senior fellow at the atlantic council. good to see you at libya has become somewhat of a hub for my runs trying to reach year by the mediterranean. one of the main problems these people face migrants are obviously frequently compelled to accept assistance. assisted return to escape abusive detention practices. they also need to escape credits of torture, ill treatment, sexual violence in some cases as well. expulsion, a lot of them are abused in the detention centers where they are kept and they are
9:15 pm
beaten, tortured, and sometimes monies also extorted from them from their families and friends back home and their, their kid, not for ransom essentially. so the conditions that they face are quite harsh, that's inside detention center. outside of them, they face really harsh working conditions. and as your documentary pointed up, there's also limited work for everyone. so they don't have the ability to secure their, their rights or secure their, such a system. now, in libya, seldom migrants are a major source of income for criminal networks that facilitate their journey across the mediterranean. what's being done to find these criminal networks there's multiple things that are done. i'm not entirely sure whether it is to fight the criminal networks per se. but the level of the european union, for example, there have been policies that have been put in place. unfortunately, the main benchmark that you use is the number of interceptions i would
9:16 pm
say the, the main benchmark that you use us to measure success are the numbers of people that are returned to libya and also the decrease rate of a rivals in europe. so that's quite a fraud benchmark because they hide to an extent what happened inside the country asked for inside the country. there are cause metric measures what i would call them taken both by the european union and by the national authorities improve the detention condition which isn't, which hasn't been so effective that are the number, the mike. but as you point out many different problems that all sound like they're very difficult to tackle. where should authority start? how can cooperation with libya maybe be improved to improve the status. and the situation that migrants who are stranded somehow in libya can,
9:17 pm
can be improved. and can be made livable i think there are several pathways that should be taken. obviously this is a holistic problem. and as you pointed out, the maybe as merely a transit point, although that is to an extent changing right now, because increasingly, some libyan national, they're actually considering also illegally migrating via the central mediterranean . so there needs to be a holistic effort into actually establishing legal pathways or migration, which is an area where europe has in, if it can be under perform. and there's also needs to be legal pathways for migrant to arrive and settle and be able to work legally in libya, which is something where the current government has made some effort. this remains very ad hoc to an extent and quite, quite unaffected and not across the country. unfortunately,
9:18 pm
another thing which should be done this for europe to essentially revise is containment strategies. because it has proven time and time again. i have been in effect and now you also have a new dynamic which is emerging, whereby migrants are not only probably the western close to the country, but actually probably via the eastern coast of the country. and that's primarily from my perspective, at least the result of a policy from the european union, whereby it incentivized criminal networks or even non state actors into engaging and human smuggling and hopes that they would gain european funding and support and love body. thank you so much. she's with the atlanta council. thank frances, in another wave of protest and strikes over president monument caused plans to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. for the 2nd time in january, more than a 1000000 people joined walk outs and rallies and cities and towns across france.
9:19 pm
many say they're not just finding against my cause reform plans, but a vision of society. they don't agree with dana, we're years. lisa lewis, reports from paris. oh, for these pupils and students retirement is still decades away. ah. and yet, they are here to protest against a reform that they feel leaves a question mark over the very heart of the french social state. oh, our pension system doesn't work any more, but what we should do is increase levies also on employers and to get more people into jobs to finance our pensions. we need a reform that helps workers and not just the company bosses will exploit us. also, liberty reject the governments vision of a society which includes a retirement age of 64 years and no investments in education. we are fighting for another society where the public sector is always valued,
9:20 pm
although you are debased. so financial support for students has been cut and we are increasingly struggling to make ends meet. instead of helping us the government put this pension reform on top of all that we are sick of it and on them are the young people were demonstrating alongside older generations that would already be hit by the changes over by don't, don't go big road. some people are earning a lot of money nowadays, and workers had to make an extra effort when times were difficult. there needs to be more re distribution with just good with your magical masa cover. i've started working before the age of 18 and will now have to work 3 additional years with this reform. i will lose money and work longer than others that not fed up. wow. the government says the changes are needed to say francis pension system that rely solely on a pay as you go mechanism. today's workers contribute to current pensions. but this
9:21 pm
political analyst says what's at stake is also president my cost standing at home and abroad. give you a knuckle piece, continued on, call me my colleague for matter. so demona mccall wants to show he's a president who implements reforms will know the president before him. the manager to carry out in france like stella booker menu. and michael, that's also important on a european level where he will lose credibility as a strong leader if we weren't able to reform to his own country, especially in the context of the war in you praying off of this, you have a buffer, beautiful description. but polls show more than 2 thirds of the french are opposed to the reform and counting. even the government has no, it can not a citizen, i'm liking. it was the window when the majority of the friends with her for prison and my talk is determined to force the plan anyway. but analysts fear that good alienate people, even though from the government and strengthen experiments parties.
