this time, the exiled turkish journalist meets svetlana itsyana, sky, exiled leader of the opposition in bella. reuss. of course, and tide and tides, physically untied morally. it's too much on my shoulders, but i have to hold this way because i'm responsible for the future of our country. for the people who are behind the boss. guardians of truth starts february 18th on d. w ah. visited other news asia coming up to date. our chinese balloon has further deflated us china ties. but u. s. i shot down what it called a chinese spy balloon. it's all to let the secretary of state and to be blinking, calling off his visit to china. what next in the bilateral relationship, i'd be asking an expert in singapore for his take on that. and why the us china

competition in the region. ah, i british manager, welcome to the w news, a sure glad you could join us. 2 days after the united states shot down a suspected chinese spy balloon bay ging has accused washington of damaging efforts to stabilize us. china ties, vice foreign minister sheer fung, also accused the us of cold, indiscriminate use of force. so to down the program, we're looking to answer 2 questions arising out of all this. firstly, what next for bilateral ties between the 2 powers? and 2nd, how is china reacting to increased us and western engagement in asia? an area beijing considers its own. but judd. we'll get to those questions in
3:32 pm
a minute. but before that, this is what the reaction in china has been to the shooting down of the balloon to you may well i so i think this is a bit of an embarrassing moment for the americans a meal. because the u. s. air force, which prides itself on being the world's leading air force, surprisingly, did not solve this civilian aircraft problem quickly yolanda they dragged it out for 3 days. here. you had your on pool a fund yet the other day about from my perspective when i think about it, if it were us balloon which had floated to china, we may take similar measures from a personal point of view. it's probably not a big deal. it's understandable, considering that the current international situation is very tense. i think i can understand the reaction from the united states. they will have it on file for anybody. they're making a big fuss about this incident, but it doesn't do any good. it doesn't serve wells please. and joining us now for more is blake her singer. he's

a non resident fellow at the american enterprise institute and specializes in europe security cooperation in asia. blake, welcome secondary blinkin called it a surveillance balloon and dumbed it got a clear violation of sovereignty. what has beijing been able to achieve with this episode? thanks for having garage. well, the department of state and the department defense seem unified in their assessment that this building was intended for surveillance of the united states. now, in terms of paging achievements, they've managed to get a high level meeting between secretary blinking his counterpart from the chinese mentor and foreign affairs cancelled tensions which are already high are now further inflamed. and it seems that there's not much positive to take home for basing from this episode. but how does that resort further watson divisions in america's polity as well? i asked because you hear republicans unhappy it took

a democratic president so long to shoot down a balloon. well, so i think that's probably also the route and some of the disclosures in the last day or so about other balloons, traverse parts of the united states come near the hawaiian islands, guam, and also in past years we've seen similar chinese blends over japan. and our anti one so what mixed in the bilateral relationship, given that this is the situation when it comes to at least surveillance balloons. well, secretary lincoln certainly locked the door open for a future meeting. he said now is not the right time, but will post pound not cancel until the time is more conducive for a meeting that we can have that won't be dominated by news of this balloon and this intrusion into american aerospace but back in november, blake, when presidents are shooting being and joe biden met on the sidelines of the g 20

summit. and bali that appeared to be some sort of hope that the 2 powers could could manage their differences. now that 2nd blanket has postponed, his visit, has that hope from bali disappeared, or is it just on hold? i would consider it on hold. i think both sides recognized at some level that current engines are unsustainable. beijing, it's certainly eager to reduce tensions on its periphery and externally, as it deals with multiple crises at home. and the united states doesn't really have an interest in inflaming relations with china just for the sake of an employee relations. now, it is difficult domestically to manage that message. there are certainly already that are a harder line on china than, than maybe the president or others might like to see. but that's part of, that's part of managing that relationship. and i'm sure this will, this meeting will go forward at the right time. but it certainly is right now. blake, i'd like to sort of gone to another point that i'd like to discuss with you. because
3:36 pm
in the week leading up to circuitry, lincoln's visit, you had us defense secretary lloyd austin as well, who was in the region in south korea. and the philippines and china clearly wasn't too happy about it. u. s. defense secretary lloyd austin, spent last week touring asia pacific allies and oh my god, welcomed him in soul. when he arrived to bolster the u. s. alliance in the face of rising missile, a nuclear threats from north korea. with a row the very next d american and korean pilot stage joint air drills, pyongyang said an extreme red line had been crossed by

then. austin was in manila visiting washington's oldest asian ally, announcing a deal which grant us access to yet to more day or bases in the philippines. part of an effort to push back against chinese aggression. we remain committed to strengthening our mutual capacities to resist our guitar. after the part of our efforts to modernize our watch, these offers are especially important as the people's republic of china continues to advance. just deal with claims in the west gulping. she has counterpart underlined the stakes. visa, of course, we hope the joint data fake is in line with the guidance of president bergman, marcus, obese or the department to make sure that map on each of our major. so we're going to be last. but china lashed out at the u. s. condemning

a cold war mentality. sugar cabinet is an ancient as glance tensions in the right in and in dangerous peace and stability if you go down to remain vigilant and avoid being used by the u. s. u leah. this is a site that will do little to say to obey james nerves. yen stoughton bag, chief of the north atlantic military pac nathan meeting with south korean. and japanese leaders recently. his visit to an air base, part of a bed to strengthen ties with asian democracies. as fears of a potential conflict between china and taiwan, grew stronger. blake, as seen from beijing's point of view lord austin onions. shelton begs visits to the region on exactly confidence building measures that china was perhaps looking forward. you'd be right in saying that might not be the message that vision
3:39 pm
wants to hear, but i think it's entirely fair for our secretary austin, to visit us tree allies and to read forth those relationships, particularly when south korea has been subjected to considerable nuclear threats and threats of preemption from the north and the philippines is constantly subject to intimidation at sea from chinese coast guard and maritime militia vessel. so it's entirely logical for the united states to support its close partners in the region. and that may not be something that is popular in beijing, but that is an element of the united states foreign policy that won't change. but could this have been avoided given that this was in the week preceding a potential visit by secretary of lincoln to china? i wouldn't necessarily consider the thing as linked. first of all, secretary austin's visit to korea is, is a very strong message against the north korean, certainly not in toward basing and in the philippines. that's, you know,
3:40 pm
that's furthering an effort that's been going on there in terms of the enhanced cooperation agreement. we're good that the it's been going on for a decade. and our alliance with the philippines goes back far, far longer than that. now even if this was a hard message to, to swallow in beijing that does not warrant a violation of our airspace in the united states. the response. i'd like to talk about nato more specifically because young sheldon bye was in the region. his visit to japan and south korea is nato going to be playing a more active part in the region. no, i wouldn't say so perish in my own opinion. i would say that nato's interest in asia is always in the interest of countering shared threats to transcend geography for instance, tried national crime. certainly the threats of nuclear use or north korea. these are in these are of interest on all states that are interested in holding
3:41 pm
a rules based warner. so in that sense, i would say it's further in cooperation that does extend back to the $198990.00 s both the soul and joe. now in terms of nato's recent designation of china. the systemic challenge. now that's, that's something different. that is something where nato is seeking to reinforce some of its service security partners against what they see as a regional threat. but also china is operating in europe increasingly so. so nato cannot afford to completely disassociate itself from what aging is doing militarily, economically and diplomatically. let's talk about the countries in the region, blake. aside from the u. s. treaty allies, japan, south korea, the philippines. there are a number of other countries, particularly amongst a r c on who refused to be drawn into picking aside when it comes to competition with china. how do they react to this increased activity in the region?
3:42 pm
absolutely, to speaking a state to cross out these days particular all those states are very interested in avoiding being drawn into this. you know, this bilateral tension between washington and aging. they both balance, they both say that he's close to one partner when it, when it is in their interests and the other, you know, other time they need to balance these 2 interests out, getting too close to either or being smashed in the middle. certainly, se, asia has very recent memory of, you know, great power competition playing out in the backyard. and there's no appetite to be drawn into a 2nd round of that. but i think that is, that's going to be the nature of this region and that they will derive maximum benefit from, from each side to the extent they can add, while also resisting, being drawn into a competing block like relieve it there. thanks so much for joining us. bled housing from the american enterprise institute. thanks so much. thanks. revenue and china is now confirmed that like the one in the us,

another high altitude balloon spotted flying over latin america is in fact chinese . beijing says it was used for flight tests and that it had been caught effected by weather force is something that caused it to accidentally stray over latin medica and the caribbean. the pentagon has claimed these 2 is a surveillance been doing and that's it for today. there's more stories from the region on our website, b, w dot com, forward slash a share, and as ever, you can follow us on facebook and twitter back again at the same time tomorrow. so you then, but a thought so crazy
