international relief efforts are underway, countries around the world ascending rescue teams and supplies to the effected regions ah my manuscript, mckinnon. welcome to the program. at least 5000 people are now known to have died in a series of powerful earthquakes that hit turkey and syria. rescue efforts are ongoing, but the death toll is expected to rise significantly. the united nation says up to $23000000.00 people in total could be affected by the disaster. the initial $7.00 magnitude trema was centered north of the turkish city of gassy and tap it caused destruction stretching along turkeys, southern border from the mediterranean eastwards, also affecting parts of northern syria. the dement since as this disaster are

enormous, but thousands of lives have also been saved rescue as continue to dig for survivors among the thousands dead. a sign of hope as a mom is pulled alike from the rebel. 0, one 00, okay. but the others hope is fading fast. i should. which of my wife is in the. yeah. oh my wife is in the region. one want should never give up on hope, but most probably she died. j b must as always hope, prisoner, but i stayed with her for 3 hours and spent another hour to get out on the hold on for you, but i didn't get any response from her for 3 hours, which i don't know. i can't bring myself to say it is no good. i don't have any hope for autism. these $7.00,

magnitude earthquake flattened vast areas of southern turkey and is freezing temperatures. sweep the region, the now homeless struggle to stay warm. they have that will be cold here until morning. freezing getting wet. we have no place to go, no place to stay. my god, we don't even have a bad one man said he would sleep outside his damage stole to protect what remains of his business program will deduct. we're algio because of the earthquake. we will stay the night so that our furniture and the store will not be looted like ost ambulance is rush, survive is to hospital the search for life goes on. but as i was turning to days, there were fee, as these bitter sweet moments of rescue will give way to an ever rising number of

dead that's cross straight to dorian jones. now i'll correspondence in istanbul door. and can you tell us how turkish authorities ah, managing this, how are they reacting to do this disaster? what are they saying? forties are really preparing themselves and they saying that is one of the worst match with those offices. countries face to be washed is the sheer scale of too powerful earthquakes occurring within a few. our overall boss area which will be about several 100 kilometers, have been bad. be affected in cities, over 30000000 people with a gang to dissolve to a piece to grow according to a parties as many as 17000 buildings are believed to collapse. we're talking about tens of thousands of apartments, housing, hundreds of thousands of people. we've given the fact that basically the 1st quote
12:05 pm
quake occurred in the early morning. many of those people were sleeping and are in tune in piles of rubble that will once their homes, there's a massive security search and rescue operation. now go home all across the region, but this is being run by the bitter, atrocious weather conditions because all of the country is in the grip of the 5 beer bloss. the web temperatures are well below 0 and $1.00 night full to get even colder. this is holding the spectra hypothermia, for many of those people all believe to be buried in the level. but also those people are now on the street just trying to make do because the homes are considered to one state to return. well, they have symphony claps. so there's a major human humanitarian crisis about being there. they need urgent shelter, and they need even hopes food. the basic hope food is seen now as a major crisis point that needs to be addressed and there was growing now pressure only. merchants he served his i'm the government to provide this increasing
12:06 pm
criticism. he is growing. many people now saying, where is the state, given the fact that it is a large area that has been affected, the school or the emergency stuff is all being pushed. the limit and beyond time is obviously of the essence here. so what does the government doing to ensure that how to get to where it's needed as quickly as possible? well the government being said that they are, they have thousands of rescue workers to the region, but getting these people into the region is proving a major problem given the many of the roads are impossible because of quite damage . and those that are open up being locked by blizzard conditions and many occasions . so getting people into the onto the ground is a major struggle. one pulls has been shut down because of damage of the military have opened up. an air car is all by the way from so the region that is coming to
12:07 pm
the rescue work and by the al and it's tumble airport has seen images of thousands of people turning are offering assistance. those specialized workers can assist. but it's getting those people into the region and given the fact that now we're hearing tragic stories across social media, but people are in the claps houses, standing outside, desperately believing that possibly relatives are trapped in there. and they said there's no assistance. so this is really putting a lot of pressure on the ultimately part is the question was where the show me as a very large army. but the people are saying that the army doesn't seem to be assisting in the level of scale that is expected. given the scale of this operation, so there is a lot of pressure building up. what kind of support has turkey asking for, from abroad? i mean, given the scale of what we're looking at here, clearly they're going to need help from, from outside of the country. yeah, absolutely. i mean when this quake struck that move in an hour or so,
12:08 pm
the turkish current car to the government made an international appeal about how unusual in the past and previous other natural dissolves. they have been a little bit slow. they like believe of turkey stated powerpoints growing up and deal with these issues on its own. but this time they went straight to international. they made an appeal and that appeal has been being seated. and now a particular command is search and rescue team. that is the priority, particularly once i have these specials, the train tracker dogs that can bind people live in claps, building that's seen as a top priority. and that is being key that there are many teams now arriving european union and also brought arriving the search and rescue for teams with these crucial track with turkey. dog. how many of these dogs and the search and rescue teams because it is not that many right or similar breaks in the pop, but basically they just don't have enough of them. and this is seen as the key
12:09 pm
priority. the officials say we need search and rescue teams later on possibly medical support, but the prior now is it still search and rescue operation? and you mentioned earlier that there is a great willingness to help, but people or q and chewing up at apple. it's trying to get to the places where they can help. so what about non governmental support? can you tell us how the civil society in turkey, in general is responding to the situation while the country is mobilizing them in their interest, collective shock and collective realization. this is a once in a century challenge that the nation is facing. people have been coming up to off a blog here, nist ambled as being long queues organized by the municipalities. also people have been collecting blankets, warm clothes because they, they realize how many of these people in the most, everything, and they are facing these bitter conditions on top of that. people have been also going to stumble, ample to offer assistance,
12:10 pm
special like bill. and they will be flown into the, the region by the military. i'm also the municipalities here in this sample. they have their own search and rescue teams to the region they left in the early hours of yesterday morning and they are already on their reports in the already rescuing people that's been organized by the stumble at chrome, emma molo, similar mass all across the region. they have these, these skills and facilities all now sending them to the region. the country really is mobilizing the all galvanized because they realize that this is such a terrible moment the country is facing the door. and thanks so much less dorian jones in it's done both of the earthquakes have also caused devastation in northern parts of syria. these areas near the turkish border, full bitter fi thing during a serious civil war. the world health organization says movement of a to the area is likely to be obstructed to,

despite the challenges rescue workers have miraculously saved many from under the rubble. but as the body bags line up, local communities are grappling with the laws that came so abruptly in the middle of the night. some more on the relief as that we spoke with the exxon shaqia, his, the ceo of the marin foundation, which provides assistance to syrians from its headquarters in gaussian tip. so kids is like, it's a state so you have a government, you have emergency team, we've worked in the streets, we're getting fixed messages from afar about what we shouldn't do. i would not say we don't have this, we don't have government at the north, west syria. we don't have government. we have actually people who i, n g o as in civil society or trying to manage and bad side all difficulties. we
12:14 pm
very short term funding when it's being cod body and then to national community because other issues and the different countries. so basically the hospitals like being taught over 50 percent. so we are the behind the medical supply. we are already behind the winter position kids and we already behind the chunks and pants and now we have this emergency and we used to say emergency with an emergency. plus we have breath quick. i mean, you can imagine that teams are. busy working for any 47 that was less wanting unless equipment. so it's, it's hard. as it's like, there's no way to describe it. honestly. how is d w reporter gas yellow hannah's who is from syria. gassy. can you tell us what you're hearing from you'll and family and friends back home. friends and family members spent really a devastating night in northern parts of syria. in aleppo, for example. i have relatives who slept in their cars over night and it's very cold
12:15 pm
when you don't have enough gas in them, they can get any sleep at all because they're just waiting. and with every more hour of waiting, there's less and less hope. yeah. can you tell us, is the situation in syria very different to what we're seeing in turkey? syria has its own set of challenges from years and years of the civil war. the infrastructure is already was already in a very poor state before the earthquake hit. in many regions, especially in rebel held areas, it is of there's a lot of destruction and it's challenging to get age to certain areas, especially in rural areas, in villages where there's a lot of destruction and of it's just really a horrible situation. what about like power supply? for example, i mean, what was the sort of a normal power supply before this earthquake?
12:16 pm
and yet people only had a few hours of electricity and government areas and it was similar and rebel areas before this hit. so when people were going down from their buildings, there were doing it in the dark, there were just grabbing whatever they could find in a rush. and this kept repeating because there were minor shakes over and over. and people were just left in panic in the dark, most of the time, not having access to water supply is not having access. there's just a lot of infrastructural problems that exist in syria. what about sort of communications? i mean, to people know what's going on. i mean, you say they're left in the dark. i mean, they will, they will so unaware of the, the, sort of the scale of the situation. yeah. thankfully, people can still contact family members. phone lines are active and everyone has been calling everyone they know in syria and checking up on them. people had been sending their locations to people, making sure they know where they are, in case something happens. but of course they don't have access to internet. so a lot of what's been transferred to me is voice notes. i've heard some terrible
12:17 pm
voice notes of rescue workers rescuing people. and you can really hear the sounds of people screaming from under the rubble in the background. but yeah, i want to ask you on a personal note, how does this feel all for you? because i'm sure you know, as many people are saying, how can we help, what can we do? how does this feel for you, given that you have friends and family there? what can one do? there's been a lot of willingness to help people have reached out to me, specifically asking what they can do to help. and it's very touchy, but at the moment there is a lot of challenges when it comes to getting aid to the specific places that need that age. for example, in rebel held areas, they've managed to get a lot of money. and one group has received more than 1500000 in donations euro. but then how can you buy supplies with this money in
12:18 pm
a place where there is shortages of everything? there was this one devastating video of an aide worker who wanted to help, but he had no rope to rescue people who are stuck under the rubble and is just that said and in government areas right now, it's just not easy. logistically to transfer money because of sanctions, because of bank restrictions on syrian accounts. and because people don't trust a lot of the government agencies, so they're trying to fund local communities. they're trying to find people who are mobilizing from within the community, but they don't have the logistic set up yet. a huge, huge challenge. gusio hennessy w reporter. thank you so much. ok, let's take a look at some of the other stories from the earthquake disaster turkish authorities, a using a ship's, a transport the engine to hospital ambulance is carried dozens to
12:19 pm
a military vessel which then took them to hospitals in the port city of medicine for treatment. the turkish ministry of defense says 3 and a half 1000 military personnel are assisting the search and rescue assets. the united nations general assembly in new york because observed minutes of silence are victims of the earthquakes un secretary general antonio good terrorist, expressed his condolences and called on the international community to show solidarity good terrorist that you installed already on the ground in turkey and syria. providing support about the gun and football, or christie, and up through has been pulled alive from the rubble in the turkish city of her. ty gone of football association confirmed the successful rescue of the 31 year old who was reported missing on monday. he currently plays a turkish slide. a tasteful of the international response to the earthquake is gathering pace. humanitarian aid is on its way and rescue. teams from around the

world are heading to the region and germany is joining the effort people turning up in drones to help 100 volunteers of this bundle airport, trying to get the southern turkey where the devastating earthquake has killed thousands of people. countries around the world have dispatched rescue teams equipment as well as humanitarian aid among them, mexico, india, and israel. our goal is to save life. we believe that live could save feel in this time slot. the conditions and the circumstances are difficult. the weather is cold and the destruction is severe. the other, like new zealand honest, really have pledged support,

the condolences from the people of new zealand to those and i to he and in syria, we know a little bit about it with quakes and new zealand. and the significant effect with it can have on people with theme, the ceiling will also be contributing to the international if it, some international rescue teams have already started to arrive. the task ahead of them is daunting. rescue workers and turkey have been digging through the night to find survivors over norway, chicken, and root chicken. and jacqueline, an effort made no easier by the biting cold and rain workers of rushing to find as many people as possible as it has already been a day since the initial earthquake and time may be running out for many who like beneath the debris o the 8 response has been powerful at

a grass roots level 2, almost 3000000 people living here in germany. trace their roots back to turkey, and often their desire to help is deeply personal. children's shoes, warm clothing and senator re products donations from the turkish community that these volunteers assaulting out in a school in berlin. as soon as they heard about the earthquakes, they wanted to help evolve to mourn for hall. i was at home this morning and heard about this tragic. it is also in turkey, cognition, social media, on the news type, and chava mckee, i heard that there was a relief effort going on here. there's people that needed winter clothing and food festival. have i was, i took everything i could take from home. and additionally, when shopping people, then i brought it here, half of it. i'm also helping to make sure it gets to where it is needed. if i give all the organizer of the initiative knows 1st hand how urgently help is needed.
12:23 pm
smoke the from my i'm doing this from my heart because i was once effected personally off nice. i experienced the 1992 earthquake and i know how difficult the situation is, but soon as i was grateful for every little thing, that's what as soon as i heard the i got involved immediately thing as just a few. ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, 40 and i, she had the involvement of the turkish community in germany is also visible in other cities. the owners of a local boxing club in munich were overwhelmed by the number of donations from people who want to help, despite being so far away from the disaster soon. we can hear now from emma bassi, he's an international aid worker. he lives in gassy, untapped. near the 1st earthquakes epicenter, he described to us what he experienced when the 1st knocks, if quake hit well, we were slipping, company in advance,
12:24 pm
around 470 in the morning when the alarm sought to drinking and airs. quake came. it was so intense the limit that we would, we were trying to find sheltered inside the house and we were hearing concrete popping out of the walls and falling off the ceiling. so we waited until the creek was over, but it lasted for way too long. we kept feeding it for a minute and a half. then after that we ran outside. we took the car and we drove to an nearby open space where people started joining us. and we had to spend the night the 1st night and the 2nd night out. and the weather is freezing for food and water. drinking water is very limited. we barely have access to that. it's a weird feeling that we are a drinkers. but in a minute we became a people who are in the middle of this catastrophe. who need help?
12:25 pm
now we have very few access to food and drinking water. it's very limited. for the 1st few hours, we had no water, no electricity, and no natural gas. so we had to rely on our cars for eating and shelter. and we tried to get it as much people as possible to stay with us and discipline area. and then we helped them go to the shelters because the, even the shelters are having a supply issues. and i got into the situation was really bad, but it was even worse in areas like cost money and he and no dock. but basically because on top is a very old city and it's a big city. so at the old part of the city had the most building collapsing and while the newer part of the city like the building, i stayed and i live in as an earthquake resistor. so it managed to take some of the shock waves. oh,
12:26 pm
the problem is that so the roads are cooked for several reasons. i did the roads i brought because people rang, i blow of fuel and left their cars in the middle of the street. or because they're using the street as like an open space where you can steep, adopted the risk of having the breeze falling off on you. because the likes to grow bindings just i'll just collapsing because a building got survived. the 1st grade did not survive. the 2nd week or so there was a block, there is no way in or out of the city a. but if you will run out of gas stations all over again until i hear that the city is so very, very much equipped city. so they managed to survive for the 1st 2 days, but now we're starting to see the shortage and for the drinking water in medicine shelter decide. i'd like people are leaving shelters because they're trying to seek more health because shelters can keep up with the demand. allison and basil
