english plays. ah my the way it's almost 5 o'clock. god bless, gray and britain and long long live the king. so great news been missing ukrainian president not amusing since he addressing parliament in london in the u. k. his receiving a standing ovation right now for the speech that he just made in which he thanked
2:32 pm
prison for its support of ukraine. he said that london has stood with heave from day one is struck, a defiant tone, saying that freedom will win, and russia will lose. thank you mister president for being with us to day and for the powerful address that you have just given the bravery resilience and fortitude of you. and so that was president for lensky delivering his speech. and for some analysis of what he said, we have to tell you, correspondent, bogus mass is joining us from london. and here with me in the studio detail is chief international editor, richard walker and bergen. if i can start with you, tell me what stood out for you in president zalinski is addressed to parliament. how do you think it will have gone down there in the u. k? i think it was one of the most powerful speeches there in parliament in westminster
2:33 pm
hall. he, i think struck a very careful balance between being very emotional. also humble. he mentioned meeting the king, but also being defiant and being strong. he said in ukraine, every air force pilot is a king. so he was basically trying to have the ukraine and the u. k. presented as, as, as almost one entity. he said we a lot, we fight against evil and we are brave. thank you. k many times during the speech for standing by ukraine and he think was johnson personally. but he was also yeah, very, very emotional at sometimes, but not forgetting that he also comes with a wishlist and he did mention the fighter jets that he said are needed. and that
2:34 pm
would give you crane wings to fight for its freedom, say, an incredibly powerful speech. i would summarize richard. he, he's a talented orator, isn't he? i mean, as burger said, there was a motion, there was humor, and he also struck an extremely defiant tone. what, what did you make of this? yeah, i mean, he is everywhere. we've sat at this desk kind of covering so many of his speeches over the past year, and he really is a very, very good communicator, obviously, has extremely good speak, tried to supporting him as well. and, and i think if you look at every he really tailors his speech is to his audience, you know, so he's, he's there in the united kingdom in westminster hall in this historic chamber. you could see that it was packed with the members of parliament. there were standing remotely, there was standing, if you had, you know, the prime minister and the leader of the opposition of next to each other. extraordinary, really seemed there. we didn't get so many shots about, but it was really standing remotely. and, and, you know,
2:35 pm
he kind of really windy sound cynical, but not really effective that pushed the british kind of buttons. i mean, i kind of just jotted down a few references me, world war 2 was obviously very, very frequently referred to as, you know, this kind of huge part of the british kind of national psyche. the experience of world war 2, churchill, you know, several references to churchill and during the war spirit, really during the war spirit lends his own experience. having kind of been in the place where church on the chair that church sat in during the 2nd world war. a couple of years ago how he felt about that, talking about freedom, about good versus evil, about bravery, about leadership, all of these kind of these values and ideas that kind of, you know, kind of get, you know, you really hear a lot about in, in kind of the british kind of national culture referring to the royal family even linking the role family to what is his next kind of big ask which is fighter

jets, kind of, you know, giving this helmet in saying that in britain, the king prince former prince charles, who trained as an air force pilot in britain, the king is an air force pilot. he said in ukraine, every air force pilot is a king and saying that you know what their next p kind of request from the west is, is, is for a fighter aircraft. i mean, even t ma support references to t and i really wasn't any good loss in that. which was the levity. so yeah, really kind of knowing effectively to push british buttons, but also really making a very effective kind of connections between that rhetoric and the goal that he has . which is to try to kind of use britain as a kind of a bit of a lever. this out front and willing to kind of, you know, take the next step in the, in terms of providing weapons and hoping that he'll get the brits on board at some point for, for 5 digits and he prays, okay, didn't, he said, you know,
2:37 pm
you were supporting us even before the, the invasion began. your help was, was preventative in some way. so really laying on lake and on thick and sort of saying, you know, you were there for us. yeah. and now what we've heard from the british i, today's that they're gonna, in the kind of what of next steps, they've announced a few some, some certain packs of sanctions. you know, that certain you announcement and also training for ukrainian pilots on a nato fighter aircraft. so this could be kind of beginning to lay the ground for potentially supplies of nato quality aircraft being provided to the ukrainians down the road. but of course, you know, as we heard this very recently from joe biden, with you as president, he was asked point blank, you know, is he going to provide for fighter jets to ukraine? he simply hum said no. so i think we're in the, in the early stage of that debate at the moment, but you crank and do it. so let's he clearly seeing the u. k as
2:38 pm
a country that can really kind of, you know, it, he hopes will push out in front on that burger. if i can turn to you now as we just heard richard thing know, he made an impassioned plea for fighter jets. he brought a fighter pilot helmet on to the stage. now we know that richie sooner has just announced that britain will train ukrainian pilots on nato standard fighter jets. but of course, as we've been saying this is not uncontroversial. can you tell us more about that? the u. k has been training you k ukrainian soldiers since 2014 says the u. k. government, and in recent years since the war began, they've also made it public that they are, but so far they have been training. well, let's see ordinary soldiers today, they've announced that they are going to expand us training, so they're expanding it to marines, but also to a fighter jet pilots. now that doesn't mean that they are also going to deliver the
2:39 pm
fighter jets. that would, you would expect kind of go with the training and only a few days ago the u. k. defense minister than wallace has just said that there were, there will be no magic wand for the ukraine to receive. those are fighter jets from the west, but also that significant the u. k. hasn't excluded it. so unlike the u. s, the u. k hasn't said this is not going to happen. so i agree with richard that this might be interpreted as a shift in the west thinking. so the u. k has also said that they are expanding the training of the ukrainian soldiers. they're hoping to train up to $20000.00 ukrainian soldiers this year. and obviously this is significant because they will be trained to use the battle tangs and order artillery of all the machinery are that's being used by the west. and we know that battle tanks have
2:40 pm
been secured by ukraine so, so this training in the u. k is very, very important for the ukraine, but i just wanted to ask you as well about that moment. when's the lensky singled out the former british prime minister boris johnson to say, thank you. you know, boris is loved by many a ukrainians for his support of the country. his successor refused. soon act is. is he trying to sort of follow in bertha's footsteps? is he trying to be a hero of ukraine as well? well yes, richie sooner has has visited the ukraine and he, i think, is trying to evade the same spirit. so in the u. k, it's not very controversial for the country to support ukraine. majority of the british public support said they even supported, although it means higher inflation, higher food, and higher energy prices. so we see sooner. it is definitely alter with his
2:41 pm
statements today and inviting president lensky for such a high profile visit. he is definitely saying that the u. k is unwavering and it's support and, and he's saying that the u. k is out for the long term, and that is being said explicitly also today that they really want to make sure that the, that the ukraine can defend its borders. yeah, richard, we are expecting a lot of means the lensky to be visiting brussels to morrow. this hasn't been confirmed, but there is the special summer in brussels to morrow. and more concrete announcements of military sport are not expected. so. so what we'll violence b is violence can be hoping to get out of a thread. well, i think and just to be clear where we haven't had confirmation on that, there's been quite a bit of back and forth. you know, this idea that he might travel to brussels was leaked at the beginning of the week . and then that led to some speculation of okay, is that now a security risk?
2:42 pm
so we don't know yet for sure. if you, if he's planning to go to brussels, but it, it would be an obvious step. you know, after, after being in london, of course, some people are kind of looking at the fact that he went to london 1st or, you know, the 1st was united states, of course, just before christmas, then going to london. and then potentially after that grand process as a kind of sign of what ukraine seizes the hierarchy of supporters that the united states is out front. that brittany is the kind of like the united states, the biggest single supply, the brittany sometimes out front in terms of what is willing to prove support. and we just have from all ourselves to john the chancellor earlier today here in berlin . he was addressing parliament here and he was adamant that germany, although he gets criticized sometimes for being a kind of lag, it insistent that germany is very much not connect with britain in terms of the volume of supplies that that is providing. and what we've had from the germans side just announce yesterday is a pretty large package of the older model of the leper tax. there was such
2:43 pm
a lot of debate about recently up to $178.00 of those over the course the next year or so, going to ukraine from a number of countries. so there is certainly movement on the european side as well . that was an announcement between the germans, also the dutch and the danes, but will be watching out of course, what happens tomorrow to see if there's more. all right, the w chief international editor richard walker and d w correspondent, get math in london. thank so much for that. you think what you special coverage from london on d w. thank you so much for watching with every journey is full of surprises. we've gone all out with. i'm in your
