parliamentary pasadena, of the free democrats in germany. thank you. read a german view of the e u. u. s. trade relationship there, and comments by us present, joe, by the last night. let's get a better understanding from the american side. and for that, i'm joined by david gans, he's a professor in trade and international economics at rice university's baker institute. david, welcome to the show. i want to touch on this idea of free trade in just a moment. but 1st, here in germany, there's a lot of attention on this inflation reduction act and it's potential to warp investment in europe. what's the sense there in the us? how much concern among policy makers is there for a while. thanks for inviting me in terms of the so called inflation reduction act, i think probably the germans, german concerned is mostly on the subsidies for electric vehicles and electric vehicle batteries which are limited to north america and 2 countries with which the

u. s. has a free trade agreement, which does not include the e u. so the concerns here, i think, are basically the parties are united on the basic by the administration proposals. the legislation, which is by american invest american employ american workers. and though there are obviously some who are concerned with broader u. s. e u relations. i think there's a great deal of bipartisan support for making the transition to electric vehicles produce as many jobs in the us, or at least in north america as possible. there was some surprise here that biden carried on some aspects of that protectionism that we saw during the trump administration. would you expect that, that kind of by 1st produce 1st in america that, that kind of policy idea will continue in the future? is there bipartisan support for this now and going forward?
