and region. already devastated by civil war. also coming up ukraine's president is on a diplomatic drive to drum up support for the fight against russia. but what do you mean that lensky holds talks in paris with the leaders of france and germany before heading to brussels to meet with other li. ah, hello and terry martin, good to have you with us. the death toll from the earthquake disaster in turkey and syria has now reached more than 15000 international rescue. teams from more than 2 dozen countries have now joined forces with local emergency crews in the worst effected areas. but hope of finding more survivors is fading fast. aid has started arriving in hard hit areas,
8:02 am
but in many places like the city of carmen marsh resident say they've seen little outside help. 3 days after the earthquake hit, the loud buzz of heavy equipment still fills the streets of affected cities every so often there is silence as rescue worker scan for signs of life from under the rubble. but resident say, rescue operations here in the city of carmen marsh have arrived too late. oh no jobs is you lose, they leave even if they hear voices from afar is like they come here to listen for voices. they hear a voice and say yes, there is someone in there, but even then there is no team around, or there was no equipment. there's no train team, no crane. 40 hours have passed already. there is a man under the debris, renault on, but residence taking shelter are growing restless, waiting for aid for food, for medication, frustrated,
8:03 am
many or lashing out at the official response to the disaster. goes all the level of nothing was done for 2 or 3 days for our relatives and friends who have been under the debris. it does no help related it. there's no electricity, there's no water. there's no natural gas stomach, we're in a miserable state. who them, there's no bread is provided in our most important thing is food for one 3rd of the buildings are gone, our house is gone, everything is gone, but we're grateful that we survived it. prospects for signing survivors almost 3 days after the quake are bleak. experts say in this neighbourhood, in the southern city of adena, 11 buildings collapsed, killing a 130 people. some of the building still standing, sustained, visible damage, said big crystal. they told us there was nothing wrong with our house. but they want to wait and see whether the demolition of the ruins will cause any damage and then we'll go back. what else can we do to help me with help of finding survivors?
8:04 am
fading, frustrations are growing. many feel left alone in the face of what turkey is described as the biggest catastrophe of the century. turkeys president, wretch of type erewhon has rejected accusations that he's responsible for. failures in the government's response to the catastrophic earthquake at one says it was almost impossible to prepare for the disaster considering its scale. but he admitted there were some problems in dealing with the immediate aftermath. his promise to step up relief efforts, critic say, took far too long for rescue workers to arrive. many blame president ado on 3 days on he defended his government's response on a visit to the disaster zone. it included if she all state agencies, a working now public, it was
8:05 am
a 2nd to load. you're shown them are on the 1st day last. there were a few problems the from the 2nd day on we had the situation under control. still, physician lay deceives things differently, accusing the government of serious failings. he also traveled through the region and blames the president for the destruction was suited. there is only one person responsible for this catastrophe, and that is otto and me. for 20 years. he has failed to prepare the country for earthquakes, and some geologists agree they say earthquake proof structures would have prevented devastation on this scale, but were held up by corruption and ignorance. this team prepared an earthquake risk map for one city now in ruins. jeremy, the hobbies account there and had we send the map to the man he looked at it berg didn't believe it and did nothing by god bless me on my voice,
8:06 am
why was he able to do that? said the smith gloat research is maintain every one you chuck he was sitting on a powder keg, but far too little was done. it's cross straight over to dw corresponded julia han . she's in one of the worst affected regions in southern turkey. she joined us when the port city of is kendall room. julia, what can you tell us about rescue efforts in the region there? a rescue workers keep digging here in the city of is scanned or on desperately searching for signs of life. and they tell me they do still have help, even though it's been already way more than 72 hours since the 1st powerful quake hit on monday, monday. very early in the morning. basically turning thousands of buildings just like the one there right behind me into twos. for it's residence because they were
8:07 am
asleep when the quake hit. but one rescue worker who came here to help us. a volunteer just told me they managed to pull 2 people out of the rubble alive. an older lady last night. and a young child, a baby in a building near by earlier this morning. but if you look around, just look at the destruction this building here used to be a 5 story apartment block home to several families. you can actually see their belongings scattered around here, of furniture torn apart, close personal items. it's many, many people really here didn't survive this. i've been told 20 dead bodies have been pulled out of the rubble. many people are still missing. now add to this, the temperatures here, it's minus 0 degrees at night. so many people are probably at some point froze to death. under the rubble,
8:08 am
anger is bouncing over the slow response ship authorities to the disaster. understand what are people they're telling you you many people, many of families have really complained about the government handling all the rescue and relief operations here, particularly here in the province of how tie which has really been so bad. we had people say they haven't received no help at all. they had to start digging for the loved ones with their own bare hands or help array arrive way to late. some of the criticism is also that the church armed forces. the military has been deployed to late, so anger really is growing because people feel abandoned, even the survivors, they say we're left with nothing in many areas. there's no electricity, no gas, no heating, no food, no water, no,
8:09 am
nothing. and i've just spoken to rescue work here who told me that they don't have enough heavy equipment to lift all the rubble to go through the rubble. and that the a rescue operation here, which as i mentioned, involves many volunteers as well, are really poorly organized than they basically have to work. and i as everything themselves there's been a massive fire at the porch. there is that fire know under control. yeah, we actually drove by the international ports off is scandal. it's a really important port city on our way into town. and we saw dog plumes of smoke rising of from the port. we also saw fire fighting planes. we're being told, the fire has been brought largely under control. the blades broke out on monday after the quake because and that is something local media reported because a container,
8:10 am
a top holds and then went up in flames. and the fire spread to other containers as well. so we do still see plumes of smoke, but apparently the situation is largely under control, but it just shows you the scale of the destruction here. really. this is a city that has been very, very badly affected. and this is not just one building. it's entire neighborhoods that have been flattened by this earthquake. you, leo, thank you very much for now. our correspondence julia hun, there in southern turkey. while the united nations is hoping to resume a deliveries to syria, broken off by the earthquakes rescue efforts in syria are being complicated by the 12 year civil war. the affected area is divided between government controlled territory. and a rebel held enclave where millions rely on humanitarian aid delivered through turkey. d. w team is in the region including one colleague who lost his own house.
8:11 am
this exclusive report comes from the town of horror. digging through the rubble an assyrian town of harrow. just one of hundreds in the region that have been flattened by the quake rescue as often just using their fair hands. for the most basic of tools, graphite is one of the locals, frustrated by the lack of proper digging machinery that's compounded by exhaustion . after working 2 days without sleep, um and we need help from other countries. we're getting some equipments, but we have people under the rubble and we're trying to pull them out. we have malice, but what good are mallet got this little? what we really need is heavy equipment to rescue people and they've been on to the rubble for 48 hours and we need heavy equipment to get them out. she honestly bought alan. some bulldozers have arrived, but they're not nearly enough given the widespread scale of destruction and hopes
8:12 am
of finding more survivors are diminishing by the hour while the able bodied assist with rescue efforts, others are left to ponder. what's next for them? louder, anela, missoula. dont have any clothes or any possessions any more than other than the streets and the rain without socks or anything man had they don't have anyone to stay with us. my siblings died and the leper lola had taught him, especially in the had a raffle. and the other helpers in her, him who continued to hammer away until her mission is complete. and after that, they'll have another massive task rebuilding their village to get a better picture of the situation in syria rejoin now by your hon movie, he's response director for world vision, syria, that's an n g o supporting ret syrian refugees. thanks for being with us. your hon. how our syrians coping with this disaster. it is very difficult to
8:13 am
understand how they cope because after 12 years of war, displacement covey, cholera, and now the earthquake. i don't really fully understand how people do cope. what i do know is that we did some research into suicide in the northwest, and we found that many people are without hope and find no solution other than their suicide. so situation now must be more difficult, but they have no choice. they need to push on is there still hope of finding people alive under the rubble? i mean we can never lose hope in this line of work, but we, we,
8:14 am
the chances are survival are diminishing by the hour. it is cold, it is a wet like we see on the screen. there are, there is not enough equipment to find people. i'm not very optimistic but, but we cannot stop what we do. so no option. how much has the earthquake affected the job that your organization is doing inside of serial? well, our style was as much a victim of the earthquake as people that we've been serving. will vision has been around for 7 to 8 years in the northwest of syria. and has been assisting in healthcare in water and sanitation and shelter activities.
8:15 am
and it has affected us because it's become more difficult to get supplies into the country which, which we've been used to for the last 7 years. but, but because we the, the need for suppliers like blank of and 10, some medication is so big both in syria and, and turkey. that it, that it is more difficult to get supplies into the right place. fortunately, one of the major crossing. so it's opened again yesterday. ok. can n g o is like yours? be sure that the aid that's coming in actually reaches those that need it. i can assure you this is is possible because we've done it for the 7 last 7 to 8 years. and we found ways to kind of operate without getting getting
8:16 am
involved in politics or, or military action. and as long as you it, is you many, karen assistance. we have no trouble whatsoever with the sanctions in, in government health territories. i'm not quite sure how the sanction do affect human, a terran aid, but certainly in the area where we work in the northwest we. we can scale up the way we would like to johan moy, from world vision, syria, thank you very much for talking with us. those check up on a few other stories making headlines around the world today. north korea has showcased up to 11 intercontinental ballistic missiles during a night time parade, marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of its military. north korean leader kim young own attended the event with his daughter. the missiles are seen as

a major challenge to the west, as they are designed to reach the continental united states. washington says china has a global fleet of spy balloons, like the one shot down by the u. s. air force last week. the pentagon says chinese spy balloons have been spotted flying over all 5 continents over several years. chile and president, gabriel bori has asked for international aid to help combat wildfires across the center and south of the country. 24 people have died in the fires in recent days. authorities are warning that a new heat wave could further fan the flames. ukraine's president followed the mirror. zalinski is expected to join us european union summit in brussels later today. he's also due to address lawmakers in the parliament. cilenzo is 2nd trip abroad since russia invaded ukraine, started with

a visit to london on wednesday, where he renewed his appeal for more western weapons, including fighter jets. he then continued on to paris for talks with the leaders of france and germany. an enthusiastic greeting from french president, micron and jam and chancellor showed that the alleys a palace after some slight confusion about who should stand, where they were. zelinski returned to his main theme or any so greener, the sooner ukraine can get powerful, long range weapons. the sooner our pilots can get modern planes, the stronger our forces will be off, which emits nissan would in africa leads he thought were young. and the sooner this russian aggression will end. and we will bring peace back to europe. hold. bear

with me, where the french and german leaders were quick to reaffirm their support. lieutenant ukraine can count on france, its european partners and its allies to win the war. russia cannot and must not win novel. justine inc, under that, we stand firmly by ukraine's efforts to strengthen its defenses to defend its values. sovereignty and territorial integrity held associates wished to hist early as the lensky had also made a surprise visit to london for meeting with prime minister re she soon act. ukrainian president addressed the british parliament, thanking lawmakers for their support and urging them to provide fighter jets marching. i appeal to you and the walt was simple, and yet most important wars combat aircrafts for ukraine wings for free them and appealed. zalinski is like liter eco. in brussels in the
8:20 am
coming hours, scroll over to our brussels bureau, chief, alexandra for norman alexander. at this summit in brussels, ukraine's president will have a chance to meet the leaders of all you countries in person. how important is that? i would say that this is, it is very important. and so of course it is a probably man's to remind the european leaders of the urgency of the situation. the ukranian president has repeatedly said that the situation on the front lines in the eastern part of his country is a getting more severe and severe. and that the russian army is throwing more and more troops of their ukraine graces for a massive ration offensive in the spring and a people there are reportedly getting a war weary. so of course,
8:21 am
we can expect her zelinski to deliver his urgent message to the european leaders. what he needs are more advanced weapons and what he needs is also a commitment for the you are from the european leader, his dad sir, n e and e u. membership for ukraine is not a distant dream that it is a realistic option. however, a speaking to e, u officials, are you hear that this is really a difficult question, smith, with many of them telling me that award. so we are probably going to see our nice speeches and, and turn symbolic gestures, but maybe not the commitments that the korean president is hoping for. in addition to meeting the leaders of the individual, you member states there, uh zaleski will address that you harlem. and today as well, what co expect there while he is as skilled as speaker, or we know dads are and he has, as i said,
8:22 am
an urgent message to the lower. so we can expect, i would assume an emotional speech in which he would probably thank her the european union for its support and assistance. but we can expect him to once again speak about sir. what do you queen needs and her that is a more advanced weapons and fighter jets and are delivering fighter jets to queen was, are only a few weeks ago, totally unthinkable. but there is movement there for instance, with the u. k. seeing there are looking into this option to have started straining ukrainian pilots, so there is some movement there. and we also have to add that speaking before the european parliament president zalinski will be speaking to friends and allies are and only a week ago the european lawmakers adopted an am text calling on the european leaders to work towards
8:23 am
a discharge of excess accession talks with ukraine and to step up their military and financial assistance for ukraine. reminders, alexander, briefly what the you has done so far to help ukraine defend itself against russia's war of aggression the opium union and its member states have provided ukraine with weapons and to military equipment worse, almost 12000000000 euros are only recently denmark and the netherlands and germany and half promised to deliver more than a 100 level at one at tanks to ukraine. they're also working on delivering leverage 2 tanks to ukraine. the european union is also slated to provide you queen, with 18000000000 euros in financial aid this year. alexander, thank you very much. our brussels bureau tree, alexandra fun nomine,
8:24 am
and was cross straight over now to ukraine, where our correspondent nick connelly is standing by in the capital, kia nick zalinski wants fighter jets. the u. k says it will train ukrainians on the jets, but has not yet promised. the planes themselves will ukraine's president be disappointed by that. but i think if you look at the past year at all the different weapons sent by western countries to ukraine, that has been the patent time and time again. first talk of red lines and wanted to pro rusher of kind of providing defensive rather than offensive weapons. while you know, experts would tell you that often a fairly artificial distinction to be made. and then 1st of all, training is offered and then eventually the actual equipment arrives. has to be said though that you know, compared to tanks, these battle planes, these fight digits are a lot more complex in terms the logistics, even the pilot training are by in conservative estimate takes half a year. even if you're really going at it very, very fast,
8:25 am
other people talk of several years training and then there's all the kind of supply and logistics questions. and here the question of whether you grand can really protect these planes if they were to get to ukranian basis from russian rocket. so let's questions there. but as if me a sense indicator that this is a turning point and that, that taboo that had been expressed very clearly even by president biden, at chance. the shorts, obviously, in recent weeks that is now slowly crumbling, speaking of crumbling taboos or battle tanks have them promised to ukraine now, but they may not arrive until the end of the year. what is key of saying about that was important to distinguish here between the more modern leopard, 2 tanks which are arriving on july, the german ones are but in very small numbers. germany is sending 14 similar numbers expects from poland and much smaller numbers from other european countries . that promise seems to be a holding for now. oh, although if you read the german press, there's just in there that at the german government's pretty unhappy with other european countries that we're trying to push germany to do more. who are now unable
8:26 am
to really make good on those promises. but the older leopard, one tax, which are available in much large numbers that have been basically written off and been sitting in storage for years now. they are now going to be made ready for ukraine's military and will be sent by the middle or end of the year. so may be less modern, but a lot more numerous and available easily without having to take things out of active service. so yes, it is a long wait and there is a fair hearing key of that western countries just don't get the scale of this war that's being for on 1000 kilometers. and they don't really understand that kia really needs all this stuff yesterday, especially given they're expecting a new russian, it attack new russian activity in the next couple weeks. nick, thank you very much. as always, our correspond nick connelly. they're in kia. you're watching dw news from berlin. here's reminder of our main story. this our growing criticism of the official response to the earthquakes which have killed thousands in turkey and syria. turkey's president seized the destruction for himself and
