ah, my name is shay milka. stay and you know me as the almost fearless dw travel reporter. and today i'm in the german spy museum. well, among other places, because this time, i am on a special mission for you. to be laurie book booklet isn't really cheap umbrella. it's wet, great and cold. typical winter weather in berlin. what's there to do at this time of year? to day i have a few cool. at the hot tips for you. i had to the tropics, get a sense of spring in the botanical gardens. i turn up the heat. i'm going to try a red hot version of
11:32 am
a traditional snack and extreme chill out. even the glasses in the berlin ice bar are frozen. ah, climb in berlin as you've probably noticed. and i'm checking out the news, viewing terrace in the german capitol. it's on the roof of the humboldt forum in the mid to district. it's a great location for taking in the size of the city where the conditions are and so ideal today, but we're making the best of it. berlin is actually always worth the trip. well, and the advantage in winter, the city is relatively empty. so now you can see many of the attractions that are overhung by tourists in the summer. at your for example, the what forum or should i say the berlin palace. it was severely damaged in
11:33 am
world war 2 later, blown up and only recently rebuilt. most of the facades have been rebuilt. true to the original. but on this side, the building is more 21st century. the new old palace opened in 2021. it was named after 2 brothers from berlin, the scientists, alexander and vin, him from whom boyd inside it looks contemporary. the homewood forum is a modern museum building with a variety of exhibitions a little to for you at mission to the humble forum and most exhibitions is free. you can get your ticket on line or at the counter on arrival. i'm going to start my tour in the palace cellar. here you can still see the old
11:34 am
wooden foundation piles that used to support the building. they've since been replaced by concrete versions. oh, these are the old castle foundations. it's origin stayed back to the 13th century. first it was a monastery. later, a palace. it's been part of berlin, cityscape for centuries, but its reconstruction has been the subject of much controversy. ah, on september 7th, 1950. the war ravaged berlin palace was demolished on orders of east germany's communist rulers. it didn't fit with communist ideology. for over 2 centuries, it had served as the official residence of prussian kings and german emperors. now,
11:35 am
the landmark building in berlin center was history. in its place, the communist authorities built the palace of the republic. it housed the east german parliament and was a center for arts and culture all that came to an end with german reunification in 1990. the building was immediately closed as it contains large amounts of asbestos . a debate began over how to redesign the area some thought to keep the palace of the republic and a woman probably made against some of the others. wanted to see the old prussian residence, rebuilt even erecting a tarpaulin, depicting a full scale painting of the building. in the summer of 1993 a possible 3rd option of building something completely different was dismissed from the start. on july, 4th, 2000 to the german parliament voted in favor of rebuilding the overland. the
11:36 am
communist palace of the republic was torn down, and architects were invited to submit their ideas for the new building. the design put forward by italian architect franco stella was chosen. the outward appearance stuck closely to the baroque original, but the facade on the eastern side was a modern building. in june 2012, the work finally got under way. the federal government contributed 590000000 euros a further 100000000 euros for reconstructing the baroque facades, was raised through donations. 9 years later, it was complete. in the summer of 2021, the humboldt form opened to visitors from all over the world. with

the humboldt forum has many exhibitions i've chosen to visit the ethno logical museum. it has artifacts from africa, from the south seas, from south america. they are the source of a lot of controversy and have hit the headlines repeatedly because many objects come from former german colonies. so the question is, did they come to berlin lawfully, or were they stolen by the colonizers if stolen, don't they have to be returned? one prominent example is a sailing vessel from the island of luke and papa new guinea. it is the last of its kind. how do you build such a boat? the knowledge was lost with the people who became victims of violence perpetrated by german colonialists in 18. 82, i have a few questions for the museums director some to model. how do you deal with the objects that were not required legally?
11:38 am
do they here or do they get sent? that line here would get it would be so fortunate if we discover through our research that an exhibit was taken illegally from us. we approach our partner so either through national embassies or through local museums in the other country to ask how we can proceed together. and he came with army by the for, isn't that how many objects here are stolen? how many are not as the clout when visualization, those can be, i think you can see them because in many areas that joint research is still ongoing . kind of the, everything that left the original countries under colonialism is now obviously subject to more intense research false, but not everything from the colonial era was necessarily stolen on context. even at that time, there were instances where the items for voluntarily transferred, sold or gifted side. although of course, all that happened against the backdrop of certain power structures went up. some must have stuck on the so if it turns out that most of the exhibits were stolen and my museum gradually empty out over time. and that's the only defect,
11:39 am
melinda stuff. and also, so suppose the only new, i don't think that was diagnosed. that seems we have a huge collection around half a 1000000 artifact and that's not including intangible cultural acids. you're only seeing 2 to 3 percent of the collection. awesome. so this is a research institute and with some of the artifact life, even though we're transferring ownership, we still need to keep them here so we can research them together. so not everything is being returned completely. and that's not the focus of discussion right now. one moment, and what about the high profile artifacts like to bono? we know that was taking the lead life and what will happen there for this me see here we establish contact both with the descendants of the original owners and with the government of papa and guinea. the government said it's proud to have the boot here as a display of its national culture. then the community says it wants to recover the expertise they asked for an invitation to berlin,
11:40 am
so they can study it and the boots like that, against canada, income limits on sultani and has bought bunker as you can see the responsibilities great ownership. but so visitors are coming soon because perform. mm hm. absolutely replying to have partners come from mannus from the lift community, which will lead to book building projects there. and we hope we can be there when the boat is reconstructed. go sports like honestly, other than lots vaughn the f melodic recollection is just one of a total of 6 exhibitions in the home of forum. so if you want, you can spend several hours or even days here. i continue my tour on any scooter. i can't be bothered to walk in this weather. i am riding along the one to the little boulevard to the breton brigade. then i turned left and i'm at the puts them up. that's these sections of the berlin wall serve as a reminder of the decades of german division and the cold war. just around the

corner is the germans by museum one, a b james bond for a day. in this museum, you can teach and learn all sorts of things about agents and spies in the movies and in real life. florida and she macowski shows me some of the most exciting exhibits here zoned athens is one of the most famous chapters that history of espionage shall we have. 2 of the famous on enigma machines used by the germans to include messages at the british managed to break the code during the 2nd world war that which historians believe shortened the war by 3 to 4 years. after the 2nd world war came the cold war. hey, day for secret agents. here you'll find a recreated version of the clinical bridge between berlin and potsdam. the soviets
11:42 am
and the americans use the bridge repeatedly to exchange spies they had captured. but espionage is not just the male domain. i think they can't say that there were always more female agents than the movie suggest right via the secret police and communists east germany actually developed a brock camera in figure. here condos are also affective. the lens was placed here and then also a little bit, and the remote trigger was concealed in a pocket total. so you could photograph the handover of secret documents, for example. i photograph yet. i also found out that most spice don't drive lamborghini s, but more ordinary cars. this chubby could take photos using built in infrared technology made in east germany as chemical wise, the spy museum here berlin wouldn't london be more fitting because of james bond and others for thinking. james bondo little belinda, center, or loan is the capital of spies. and that began during the cold war,
11:43 am
the when west berlin, surrounded by a 160 kilometers a wallet, was in a unique position's gun. a western enclave right next to the soviet block. am i not perfect for spying sama so a lot of secret agents were active here. but berlin is still one of the spying capitals to day. what i did of germany is very important. internationally, a few of the german intelligence agency is no back in berlin assigns. if we have a 160 embassies here too. so there's a lot of agents activity going on here. there's at least as much as in london, probably more assigned to 3 up. what is, where do all the objects on display here come from? do you think the end of october 1? we find them an option on that when we get them for collectors and former spies, an agent high school, i'm pretty sure when the nice german secret police disbanded some 2 devices with mythics and i was all very chaotic gifts. so now we get calls saying that this or that and the seller and would be be interested once we think that we also work with the foreign and domestic intelligence services today, due to professor ford,
11:44 am
they look through their inventory to see what they can release. what's come on? got none of the night. technology didn't just stuff the data, the more came lawyer techniques are and i something fast fired at at the end. another challenge awaits me. the laser maze. i'm not allowed to touch any of the laser beams and i only have 2 minutes to cross the room. tonight i like a little dance. oh,
11:45 am
oh, i was almost there. i can't quite compete with james bonds, but that was fun. now it's time to get back to nature from puts them up lots. i can take the s bond line one directly to the dalin district and the botanical gardens the right is just half an hour. ah of course in summer you can wonder around the large outdoor grounds now in the cold season. 15 glass houses are more inviting. ah, i'm starting in the tropical house. it's
