11:01 am
intense 5 grinds on for control of the eastern danverse region and ukraine. new supplies of military aids can come soon enough for ukrainian troops trying to hold back the russian assault. you says it has a plan for peace. ah, i married evans dean. thanks for joining me. we begin with some breaking news from ukraine. you, as president joe biden has arrived in the ukrainian capital key of on what is his 1st visit to ukraine since russia launched its invasion a year ago this week. biden was scheduled to make a visit to neighboring poland, to mark the anniversary. but this unannounced visit to kia will underscore washington's unity with europe and nato, against russia's aggression. o d. w, as in zebra, him is standing by in key a for us, for the latest on all of this. so
11:02 am
a, we know that the city center there has been blocked. what more can you tell us? well, all morning today, marianna, there had been rumors around here that some high ranking official is a will be coming to visit a president zalinski there, you know, had thought maybe be vice president harris, but then it turned out to be, you know, you as president biden himself and we have seen images of him and president zalinski walking through the city. and just to give you an idea of how extraordinary this says, we're actually in the middle of an air raid right now, an area that stretches for the whole country. so actually, residents are advised to be in shelters right now to hide because there is a threat of missiles or drones striking targets within the city. but here you have the president of the united states in the ukrainian capital walking outside. i mean,
11:03 am
of course, we can expect that president biden will be here to confirm had the military support to, to ukraine, to further, you know, solidify the united states as commitment to helping ukraine. but it's really the symbolism of this trip. and his arrival at this moment, i mean, we are just a few days away from the anniversary of this war. so it is pretty, it's up to pretty extraordinary moment. i would say, well of course this timing is very significant. the abide and has come now right before this one, your anniversary i should mention, and as you're speaking to us, we're watching some footage that has been posted on social media of bite and walking through what we believe to be by walking through the streets of key if i imagine there must be extraordinary security measures in place, you mentioned there's an area siren going on. what can you tell us about the types
11:04 am
of security measures that ukrainian officials must have been preparing ahead of biden's visit? what we do know that, you know, since yesterday we have heard that certain streets within the city center will have been blocked. that a network failure networks and you know, will have been disabled in certain parts of the city. but as, as one would expect, you know, security officials aren't necessarily open about these details because they are also related to the security of the visitor who is going to, who's, who will be here. and as you mentioned, we're seeing reports, videos on social media, journalists posting footage, but we don't really have official confirmation yet. and that is completely normal given just how a given the high security sensitivity of a visit like this. a confirmation will usually come a little bit later in the visit after and sometimes even after it's,
11:05 am
it has concluded and, and just how significant is biden's visit to president zalinski? what kind of a booster do you believe this will give him? i mean, you know, let's just look back a little bit at the, the relationship between biden and a valencia. i mean, prior to the war, zalinski had, you know, hot to get an audience with the u. s. president. and he had had a visit with him in washington. the united united states was president zalinski, 1st foreign visit during war time, where he went to washington. he met with the president. he also addressed congress, or viewers might remember, you know, bringing that flag to congress and giving it to at the time speaker pelosi but as, but of course, the president u. s. president biden coming here and showing his support in person. as i said
11:06 am
under, you know, the threat of an error aid is, is to get another show of support for president zalinski and will undoubtedly be a huge boost of morale for the residence of the city and this country. as we appreciate. as we approach the grim anniversary of this war, dw is abraham for us in kiev, reporting on the unannounced visit of the u. s. president joe biden to the ukrainian capital e. thank you. the air. thank you very much for your reporting and will speak to you for more updates on this developing story. well, let's turn our attention now to our other top story and the u. s. secretary of state antony blinking is warning that china may soon provide russia with lethal assistance in the form of weapons and ammunition for its war against ukraine or its part. beijing has lashed out. i what it calls the false claims by the united states
11:07 am
. lincoln's warning came after a meeting with his counterpart, wang ye at the munich security conference. and again, while on a visit to nato member turkey, be are concerned that china is considering us supporting russia's war effort in ukraine with lethal assistance. something that we're watching a very, very close. so i also said and as president biden said, going back many months when the aggression 1st took place and he spoke to president tion. thing. he told him at that point, that there would be real consequences in our own relationship were china to provide legal assistance to russia in this aggression against ukraine or in a systematic way, 8 and the evasion of sanctions. we can now speak to d, w, correspond, and rosie burchard, who is in brussels and following an e foreign ministers summit there. so we just heard from the u. s. secretary of
11:08 am
state antony blinking, that china army, russia would have serious consequences. but what would be a likely reaction from europe? well, it would be a red line in china relations that is, according to the european union's foreign affairs chief. you're set barrell, who has been in this building speaking to press urging of course, encouraging china not to take this step. not he was quite clear. he said that this was not something he had anticipated from china. so far he had heard from his, from china's talk diplomat, one v, that china is not planning to send weapons to russia, but he made it clear that that would be a red line. i also spoke to estonia as foreign minister who said he was very concerned about such dimensionality of a supply of weapons from china to russia. and he said, china surely wouldn't want to have blood own eights hands. now when it comes to a reaction, what does that red line translate into?
11:09 am
will that is where it gets tricky, because we've seen how difficult it's been for the european union to pursue sanctions against russia due to those long built up dependencies. for example, when it comes to relying on russia in the past that you did for natural gas, you, china relations are, are so deep when it comes to trade. so many jobs in europe are linked to trade with china. that this is something which many analysts say could be very difficult. we'll see how this plays out if this were to indeed occur. if china were to supply these weapons, which beijing says it has no plan to. of course, it has pushed back on these clays, but certainly very important to you political topic to keep watching one which will keep watching for you from here at this meeting of the you foreign ministers. and now china's tom devilment, wang, he has been meeting with multiple european officials over the last last couple of days. it's clear that improving relations with the e. u is very important to china, but is china a viable partner for the you?
11:10 am
when it comes to helping end the war and ukraine? will china say 8 wants peace, but of course china and the european union have taken very different approaches. china has not sanctioned russia, it's not even giving any sort of credit, right? right, condemnation of most go over the invasion of ukraine. but the fact is, it's very seen as a very big important geopolitical actor. so the hoss to keep talking to china about this at least thought the line from you officials and it has been brought up in several e, u, china meetings over the past year. but certainly european union looking on, i think, with a degree of concern alarm when it comes to china's ties with russia and hide the those could emerge over the coming days. because as we heard from a, as joe biden, reportedly touching, don't in key if will one g, china, it's taught diplomat, is reportedly expected in russia. and china says 8 is going to come up with its own peace proposals for peace in ukraine. i think we can expect those will be quite
11:11 am
different from ukraine's ideas of how to achieve peace and potentially also the use ideas of how to achieve peace, which is essentially that ukraine must win, that ukraine should decide on its own terms how this war shoot. eventually end, and of course the war is driving on as we see on the growth still meant suffering, which continues. now almost one year on that was d. w 's, rosie beer time reporting for us from brussels, rosie, thank you so much. we appreciate it. well, back to the fighting in ukraine. now, where are you? creating officials have issued an air raid alert for the entire country that's ahead of the one year anniversary of russia's invasion. officials have warned that stepped up. russian assaults are expected this week. the finding in ukraine's east ryans on, but there has been a little change along the vast frontline, over the last couple of months. ukraine has been calling on the west to deliver more weapons and ammunition which are running out fast. these
