this war with a white? how do you read things for your religious she boss or owners? i think that is historical, more for all, for all cause and we can now speak to the w, corresponded in key of abraham who's standing by for us. so a are we heard president zalinski speaking there? he's very grateful to the u. s. president. how significant is this unannounced visit by joe biden, for ukrainian people as a whole one? marianna, we have to remember the timing. we're now just a few days before the anniversary of the war. tutor is scheduled to give a speech of on tuesday when he gave that speech last year. a couple of days later
1:04 pm
this country was attacked. and so there was a lot of a sort of fear and anticipation among the people here in ukraine about what is going to happen now a year on with, you know, trying to what putting believed at the truth. still a very much standing there are no russian troops walking the streets of keel. so there was a, an expectation that something would be coming from russia. and so just a few days before that to have the president of the united states come and visit in the flesh the capital to reaffirm the american support for ukraine to say that they're in it for the long haul. to say that that for the united states will support you. quinn for as long as it takes is a huge boost of morale. and is somewhat reassuring to the people here. and we've been hearing that biden's visit came as they are, were air raid sirens in key is, what more can you tell us about the circumstances of this unannounced visit by the
1:05 pm
u. s. pro the president such a high profile gets well, it was just a very effective image of when we saw president biden sort of walking through the streets of key of going to pay his respects at a memorial for fallen soldier, since 2014 and with air raids blaring in the background is just a very, very powerful message of, of defiance. we don't really have that many details about the security that goes into, you know, planning a trip of the sort because of security reasons. but we do know that, you know, the worst streets here in the city that were even blocked for pedestrians. they've had some connectivity issues and so on. but officials tend to stay very tight lipped when it comes to details of a such a visit. and stand by for just a moment because we'd like to take a listen to some of the remarks by joe biden, during that joint press conference that he held with vladimir zalinski justice
1:06 pm
short time ago. and we'll continue our conversation after i knew it was a who was one year ago this week. and we spoke on the telephone which was very late at night and washing and early in the morning here in key russian plans around the air and tanks for rolling across your border. you told me that you could hear explosions in the background. i forget that in the world was about to change. i remembered vividly because i asked to, i asked to nurse, i asked you, what is there mister president? what can i do for you? how can i be of help? and i know there, remember what you said to me, but you said, and i quote, gather the leaders little whirl, asked them to support ukraine,
1:07 pm
gather the leaders of the world, and asked them to support ukraine. so and we just heard from you as president biden and talking about what zalinski had asked of him to gather more support for ukraine. has biden delivered, did he fulfilled his promise? the united states has been the largest supporter of ukraine in this war, providing them with weapons and ammunition. and today, of course, you know, even more military aid was promised hearing key of more high mars rocket systems, javelins and so on. so the united states, you know, they would, i would imagine you, it, u. s. officials would say that they have done, they've also been a real rallying force of europeans, encouraging them to take,
1:08 pm
you know, more responsibility for the security of the continent. but ukrainian officials will tell you that it's not enough of they, you know, they have tanks, they have all kinds of other weapons, but they are always looking for more support military support to defend the country, including fighter jets. and i think we, you know, until the end of this war, that demand will not go away. d, w, special correspondent abraham in kia forest and thank you for your reporting. we appreciate it or some analysis we can now bring in d, w, achieve international editor richard walker for more so richard, the timing of jo biden's unannounced visit to key of is of course, very significant. what can you tell us about that? that's right mariana. and we're, we're entering, you know, the run up now to the end of the week friday, which is going to be the 1st anniversary
1:09 pm
a whole year since russia amounted is full scale invasion of ukraine. and this week, leading up to that is absolutely packed with events, a kind of a lot of diplomatic jostling going on, leading up to that really important anniversary. in fact, it started over the weekend. the munich security conference here in germany took place and this is a huge international gathering on, on defense insecurity. you had the u. s. vice president, commonly harris there you had china's top diplomat. when you there, you had european leaders, all of shots and manuel mccall from germany and france, respectively. everybody setting out their store. the western allies, of course, expressing their support for ukraine, china with, with quite a pugnacious message of its own. attacking the united states is kind of the origin of this conflict and accusing it of essentially trying to split the world. so that
1:10 pm
was like the kind of framing going into this week. now we have this trip by joe biden in ukraine. he's going to travel on to poland. we're expecting a huge speech from him in poland, addressing the polish nation. that is going to be very symbolic. poland, of course, a very important player in the overall picture of the western alliance and its position on ukraine. given that it, it neighbors, ukraine and also what we have at the moment is when the chinese talk diplomat just out of munich, he's now in moscow holding talks about a possible piece plan that the chinese said that they're going to, that they're going to introduce. then at the end of the week in new york, we're expecting the united nations general assembly potentially to vote on a new resolution. that will be a test of international opinion that we have all of shots. the german chancellor going to india. he'll be looking to try to astir india off the fence where it's been perched for the last year or so. so, so much going on this week,
1:11 pm
as you can imagine, because it's such a symbolic week or with that inverse re, at the end of it. 70 lots of diplomatic activity now. now, richard, we heard from president biden promising additional military support as he spoke earlier today in here. he also talked about the steadfast support, the unity when it comes to supporting ukraine. and yet, are there some signs that some of this unity in supporting ukraine is waning among some us lawmakers yet were there, there is the element of politics is being injected potentially into the picture of u. s. support for ukraine, more than it has so far. and that really is part of the political time table. we had the u. s. midterm elections took place in november and that changed the balance of power in congress. that means the republicans have now in charge of the house of representatives, part of congress. and within the republican party, there is
1:12 pm
a minority, but quite a vocal minority, this very skeptical about providing all this support for ukraine. they're pretty much in the tradition of the sort of donald trump in america. first idea of america should sort of isolate itself from these kind of re commitments to, to, to friends and allies around the world. now it's a minority, but we're approaching election sees in the united states. the presidential election is on the horizon. there's going to be rivalry within the republican party for the presidential nomination. donald trump, of course, with his name already in the ring. so this, it could potentially politicize the issue, support ukraine, a much more than it has been so far. it's been pretty much a bipartisan so far, but we just don't really know to what extent that is going to really move the gauge . that's really unclear for now, but it's certainly a source of some concern, i think, here in europe and of course in ukraine as well. because that american support is so absolutely critical. without it,
1:13 pm
ukraine would face almost certain defeat. that was d. w cheap international editor richard locker. richard, thanks so much for all of your in science. let her attention back to the fighting in ukraine now. and kia has issued an air raid alert for the entire country officials or warning that stepped up. russian assaults are expected. this week to coincide with the anniversary of the invasion, the fighting in ukraine's east grinds on, but there has been little change along the vast frontline, over the last couple of months. he cranes been calling and the west to deliver more weapons and ammunition, which are running out fast. these ukranian troops near the town are severe. ask you said time away from the fighting to hone their shooting skills. they will soon put them to use the trenches off the months on the back foot.
1:14 pm
russian forces have gone on the offensive, talking at several points along a vast frontline, stretching from the black sea to but a ruse. they have made little progress, but their firepower is a problem for the ukrainian defenders. but we have one artillery about from all, all with either the russians can do it 5 times more. so it's very difficult for the guys who are standing, especially the 1st light. they feel it too much. russian at tillery is targeting civilians to what? in the town of holiday, this elderly woman recalls the moment a show it her apartment block. don't welcome. oh, i thought i got the shower entered here. is it not? and i was standing in the corner post you spoke of the fridge fell unto me. oh boy . and that was dragged out from beneath it. what you irina, the daughter of the neighbor got me out of the fridge. somehow covered me wanting

a local reco civilians living in areas under russian and tuck. not only fear the shelling in the harsh window cold. they also lack heating and food. residents in the city of coupons rely on food puzzles brought in by volunteers. courtroom that we went to russia to leave us. why are they told mounting us for was why they torturing us after almost a year of war, residence of bracing for further hardships in the embattled towns of eastern ukraine. u. s. secretary of state antony blanket is warning that china may soon provide russia with lethal assistance and the former weapons and ammunition for its war in ukraine. for its part, beijing has lashed out of what it calls false claims by the united states. lincoln's warning came after meeting with his a chinese counterpart when he at the munich security conference. and again,
1:16 pm
while on a visit to nato member turkey. the are concerned that china is considering us supporting russia's war effort in ukraine with lethal assistance. something that we're watching a very, very close, as i also said, and as president biden said, going back many months when the aggression 1st took place. and he spoke to president, she's in thing, he told him at that point that there would be real consequences in our own relationship. we're trying to provide legal assistance to russia in this aggression against ukraine or in a systematic way, 8 and the evasion of sanctions. i spoke earlier with d. w, brussels correspondent, rosie bierce, hard, who is tracking a summit of you, foreign ministers, and i asked her about the e. use likely reaction. should china's supply russia with weapons? well, it would be a red line in china relations that is,
1:17 pm
according to the european union's foreign affairs chief. you're set barrell, who has been in this building speaking to press urging of course encouraging china not to take this step. not he was quite clear. he said that this was not something he had anticipated from china. so far he had heard from his, from china's talk diplomat, one v, that china is not planning to send weapons to russia. but he made it clear that that would be a red line. i also spoke to estonia as foreign minister who said he was very concerned about such dimensionality of a supply of weapons from china to russia. and he said, china surely wouldn't want to have blood own eights hands. now when it comes to a reaction, what does that red line translate into? will that is where it gets tricky, because we've seen how difficult it's been for the european union to pursue sanctions against russia due to those long built up dependencies. for example, when it comes to relying on russia in the past that you did for natural gas, e, china relations are, are so deep when it comes to trade. so many jobs in europe are linked to trade with
1:18 pm
china. that this is something which many analysts say could be very difficult. we'll see how this plays out if this were to indeed occur. if china were to supply these weapons, which beijing says it has no plan to. of course, it has pushed back on these clays, but certainly very important to political topic to keep watching one which will keep watching for you from here at this meeting of the foreign ministers. and now china's tom devil meant wang, he has been meeting with multiple european officials over the last last couple of days. it's clear that improving relations with the e. u is very important to china, but is china a viable partner for the you? when it comes to helping end, the war and ukraine will china say 8 wants peace. but of course china and the european union have taken very different approaches. china has not sanctioned russia. it's not even give any sort of right, right,
1:19 pm
condemnation of moscow over the invasion of ukraine. but the fact is, it's of a seen as a very big important geopolitical actor. so the hoss to keep talking to china about this at least thought the line from you officials and it has been brought up in several you china meetings over the past year, but certainly european union looking on, i think with a degree of concern and alarm when it comes to china's ties with russia and hide the those could emerge over the coming days because as we heard from asia, as joe biden, reportedly touching tone in key, if will one ye child talk diplomat is reportedly expected in russia. and china says, 8 is going to come up with its own peace proposals for peace in ukraine. i think we can expect those will be quite different from ukraine's ideas of how to achieve peace and potentially also the use ideas of how to achieve peace, which is essentially that ukraine must win, that ukraine should decide on its own terms how this war shoot. eventually end, and of course the war is dragging on as we see on the ground,
1:20 pm
still immense suffering which continues now almost one year on that is the w, his rose and beer shop reporting for us from brussels, rosie, thank you so much. we appreciate it. and for the view from china, i spoke a short time ago to journalist fabi in crush mart in beijing. yet, today, a beijing's foreign ministry has issued a statement that is really strong words, reads as a counter attack against c. s a. basically a test. we don't accept any pressure from the u. s. we don't accept any finger pointing. and it also said that the u. s. shouldn't stop spreading any this information and basically saying that the u. s. site is lying and it goes even further than the statement also accuses the us side of prolonging this war by i'm delivering weapons to the battlefield. so basically, the chinese site is denying all the claims into this counter attacking against us. well, the statement from a, the,
1:21 pm
a secretary of state came to the day before china's top diplomat was expected at q a whole talks in moscow. what are these talks likely to focus on? well, i mean, one is a trouble to moscow is really very symbolic. m a, you have to consider one year after russia and waiting. and basically biden is visiting here, filed, i'm china needing foreign diplomat is visiting or moscow. so 1st of all, it shows how important the relationship towards russia is for china. and then of course, i'm expecting a rather different rhetoric birds and $11.00 he said in munich, i mean, at the time he was basically proposing a, a piece initiative and saying that china as a peace loving power, et cetera. but i'm probably in russia, he will rather emphasize know the friendship towards russia and also and go against the western let world autumn. but though it's also important,
1:22 pm
what will be talked about behind the scenes will china use its influence over russia to i have russia engage for peace? i rather skeptical, but i mean, this is the big hope is especially in euro, many state. he does have well relations between the united states and china are, are very low at the moment, especially in the wake of the us shooting down that chinese balloon. that was flying over u. s. territory in the american said that it was a spy, a balloon, and the chinese insisted it was just for a weather research purposes. but we are, or their ties lightly, did it to deteriorate even further as are the chinese tub. diplomat shows his support for russia by doing this visit to moscow. well, i mean, it definitely will be a red line if, for example, the u. s. really pious of the chinese state firms are delivering weapons to russia . i don't think this is very likely, but let's see. but of course,
1:23 pm
even if the status quo remains this already really very concerning. because as you said, the bilateral ties are really at a record low and on both sides cannot agree on basic facts. and every diplomatic issue and both sides are using each other of lying, of your twisting facts, et cetera. the rhetoric is really very poison. and that to be honest, i don't see much room for improvement. and in china, the main, you know, perception is that no matter what we do, the u. s. will not tolerate our rise anyways, will be almost give up on this relationship. i mean, i'm exaggerating only a little bit here, but it's really quite pessimistic and you have a lot of, you know, academic voice as we're calling for. we have to prepare even for the worst case, namely, or a military confrontation. so i would say it couldn't to, to read it even further. of course, we hope that this will not be the case. that was journalist 5 in christmas in beijing 5 in thank you. all right,
