[000:00:00;00] ah, [000:00:00;00] with this is dw news live from berlin, the world's 20 leading nations divided by ward g 20 foreign ministers wrap up their meeting, and india, unable to agree on

a statement about russia's invasion of ukraine. but the u. s. and russia break the ice as their top diplomats meet on the sidelines. and mystery poisoned attacks on school girls that are on there are claims hard line religious groups are trying to stop girls from getting an education and a millennial old mystery that could be closer to be installed new technologies, giving us glimpses of hidden chambers and one of the world's most famous ancient landmarks. ah, i'm here until berlin. welcome to the program. a meeting in delhi of the g 20 group of leading nations has ended in disagreement over the war and ukraine. india's foreign ministry says differences on the invasion could not be reconciled despite their opposing stances. the u. s. secretary of state entity blinking and his

russian counterpart, sergey lab rav met for the 1st time since the war began. a gathering of leaders beset by division, ring as host of the g 20 foreign ministers meeting. india was determined to focus attention beyond the war in ukraine. but despite their best efforts, the conflict quickly dominated the agenda. for the 1st time since the war began, the u. s and russian top diplomats spoke face to face on the side lines of the summit. i told the foreign minister what i and so many others said last week at the united nations. and what so many g 20 foreign minister said today. and this war of aggression engage in meaningful diplomacy that can produce a just and durable piece, but the brief exchange did little to narrow, the divide between them. instead,

russian foreign minister. so gay lover of accused western nations of turning the g 20 into a foss. oh, after hours of negotiation, ministers from 20 of the world's wealthiest nations were unable to agree on a joint declaration. the lead differences on the ukraine issue, which um, we could not to reconcile between various parties who held a different positions. the final declaration had cold for rushes, complete withdrawal from ukraine, a passage that moscow rejected, but they were not alone. china also objected to the statement raising concerns in the west that the 2 nations are moving closer together. ukraine and it's western allies, fear that china may be considering providing weapons to russia and beijing's decision
2:04 am
to side with moscow at the g. 20 has only reinforced that concern. earlier i spoke to jonathan katz the director of democracy initiatives and a senior senior fellow with the german marshall fund. i asked him how worried washington is about the deepening relationship between moscow and beijing. it's of real concern to, to divided administration to trans atlantic allies. also to partners of ukraine in the pacific as well. so this is not new. we've seen reports about the potential for china to provide significant weapons to russia that has been expressed. the concern has been expressed by washington. and so i still think what you're seeing is sort of a diplomatic dance, a china clearly which did not support the un resolution condemning ukraine. a last week has cited too often with moscow. and that's a concern, but the bigger concern is, will they up the ante and provide weapons and other support to russia,
2:05 am
which is flagging in its war against ukraine. now, as you said, there, this dipping of relationships isn't necessarily something new. vladimir putin has been attempting to forge and aligns with china for years now. however, it seems china wants to keep russia as a junior partner or both nations pursuing the same goals. look, chad is certainly has its own, its own interest. it's e owed economic interests interests and it's region and globally, russia does as well. but where they come together is that they're both authoritarian lead countries that don't like to play by the rules globally. they are those that are seeking to undermine the type of stability that's needed to address global challenges that i find it a force. you hear mr. lab talk about the g 20 being undermined by the united states . but of fact, it's russia and china. those countries that are not active players and supporting or addressing global challenges because they're the ones that are undermining the g
2:06 am
20, not the united states, not democratic allies and partners. and so i think what you're saying is that while there is some separation between what beijing watts ultimately, because it has its own interest, they share too much together right now. and that's a deep concern for washington. now it stay with the g 20 there for just a 2nd. is china, the only nation tacitly supporting russia among the g? 20 or are there other nations that are also sympathetic to russia's cause? look, i think there's, there's other g, 20 countries. india included that continued to trade, trade with russia. some that abstained at the un last week on the resolution, condemning russia's full scale invasion to be crate on, on the anniversary of february 24th up. so there are some that are sitting on the fence trying to have it both ways. it's hard for me to see how mr. moody and other democracies globally can support and condone war crimes. in ukraine,
2:07 am
you cannot resolve the underlying issues facing the, the globe without addressing war cries, without addressing the threats posed by russia not only to ukraine, but their actions that they've taken in places like syria or africa. and so my hope is that india and other countries that have maintain a relationship with the russell think again, support efforts. one. yes, to bring an end to this conflict too, but not fuel a mr. putin's war machine. and that that's a problem. so it's not only in the global, but there are other partners and allies hooting within the g 20. that really, i hope, including turkey that can play in even more constructive role at ending the war, but ending support for mr. cruz wor, machine. alright, i'm afraid we're not to leave it there. that was jonathan cats, a senior fellow with the german marshal fung. thank you for your analysis. thank you. support for ukraine is also expected to be a major topic on
