please. ah, free time in the line. but still very much alive. d. w, travel, you'll go to the special southern germany. it recognizes where exactly. it was fun and i have learned a lot our culture history, all their d. w. travel extremely worth a visit. ah, ah, tesla ticks off investors. the electric car maker says it will cut production costs in half, but a promised affordable model is still nowhere to be seen. also on the show, constant attacks from russia have weakened ukraine's energy system. now keith is
7:17 am
calling for a new strategy to help protect its grid. we'll hear how the u. s. plans to help us ally keep the lights on. also, on our show, india's growing footwear market means more waste on the back end. but one business has found a more sustainable approach. welcome back to another dw business. i'm christy plats . and coming to you from berlin. electric car maker, tesla ames to cut vehicle assembly cost by half in future generations of cars. c o v e loan mosque has said, but at the company's investor de musk disappointed when he failed to unveil a compact affordable model. the highly anticipated vehicle is part of teslas strategy to capture at the mass market. increasing sales volume is key to bringing down prices for consumers. musk said he added that many people would like to own a tesla, but they can't afford one or to get a market response to this news. let's bring against corta on wall street. yann's
7:18 am
exactly how disappointed were investors that this new model wasn't built? well, i mean, we got a lot of vision, but not so many specifics. and that's basically why the stock of tesla last about the 6 percent in value. having that set the stock and has been up about 90 percent so far this year after the stock on the other side. got pretty much sherman, hampered last year when my oldest had trouble with twitter selling at test let's talk and also some other issues. so yes, there was a disappointment on wall street, but then it says that the stock was up quite a bit so far this year. so you could sell say a buy on the rumor, sell on the fact. so that's what happened here in the thursday session with the stock off test up. all right, so not such a bad response. now tests also said they want to be producing $20000000.00 vehicles
7:19 am
a year by 2030. that is 10 times their current production capacity. i mean with demand down right now, how realistic is that goal? it definitely is quite a goal. and to put those 20000000 cars into perspective from last year, toyota was the number one car company on the planet selling about 10000000 we killed so. so test love wants to achieve double that figure. one thing is clear if tesla wants to get close to those 20 millions, they would need more effectively than the ones that they have right now. and in the united states and china and in germany. so test did announce that there will be opening a new gig factory and mexico that might be ready and about 2 years so. so a test lead south that saying a to achieve this goal of $20000000.00 vehicles that they might need to invest about $150000000000.00. so we really have to wait and see if that is achievable.
7:20 am
but then again, i mean, you grow with your goals and core to in new york. thanks for that. while moving on to ukraine, which is braving a tough cold. and sometimes dark winter after russia repeatedly attacked power stations and other energy infrastructure, millions have been impacted by disrupted supplies of water heating and electricity . yet ukraine's energy sector has persevered. its grid is stabilizing energy provider cochran air. go said there's been no power deficit in ukraine for the last 18 days, but russia's constant tax are threatening the surviving energy infrastructure. now, ukraine's minister of energy was in zagreb to meet with several european counterparts to discuss efforts to strengthen ukraine and europe's energy security . and also shows of course, renewables and we could sink about solar 1st wind, of course, and that is also the ah,
7:21 am
solution for greek decentralization of the generation sued. and even from the military threats for russians. if we could imagine that next winter was still will be in war and they could de thank us again. them in the energy sector again and again. ah, it's very hot to target so many so many facilities around the country, even when they could use missiles while to talk to us more about energy support for ukraine. i'm joined now by the u. s. assistant secretary of state for energy resources jeffrey piatt in washington. jeffrey, thanks for joining me. ukraine's energy infrastructure. it has a proven resilient, as we've heard, but it is highly vulnerable at this point. what are your concerns in this area? so my biggest concern, of course, is that the kremlin will continue systematically trying to dismantle ukraine's energy grid. the way putting has been doing since the middle of october,
7:22 am
i think in key there's a great sense of satisfaction and pride at the risk. billions that their system has demonstrated the flexibility that the ukrainians have achieved by cannibalizing from one system to another. critically important support from across the international community in particular our g 7 group and i would commend germany's leadership as g 7, president last year in establishing a specific energy focus group that i've been helping to coordinate from the us side . the united states has put a lot of resources into this $53000000.00 of equipment which we delivered last year . we have additional appropriations now from our congress of $1100000000.00. well, definitely. well, talk talking about the $1100000000.00. i mean, what sort of solutions are ukranian allies like the u. s. looking at in terms of energy support from ukraine going forward,
7:23 am
whether that's in the mid term or maybe even after the war. so we're trying to do 2 things at the same time. one is to undo the damage that vladimir putin has done. so restoring transformer stations, helping to build resilience in the grid. and that's something that we're working with very closely with our european partners. and then also addressing the challenge that you just had minutes or shrink talking about which is to build back better, to build a new ukrainian energy system, which is more resilient, more decentralized, more european, more focused on renewables, rather than the old soviet system that ukraine had depended on in the past, right. i wanted to ask if you agreed with the energy minister's view that expanding renewables in ukraine would make the grill grid more resilient to rush attacks. what's your take on this? he's exactly right. it's true for the rest of europe as well. that is the greatest source of energy security as an energy system which is decoupled from russian oil
7:24 am
and gas, and which is much more focused on renewables. ukraine has substantial potential in the areas of wind, solar bio mass. ukraine also has one of europe's largest nuclear rates. united states and other european partners are working closely with ukrainians in that area as well. so we see a substantial capacity for ukraine to emerge after the war, not just as self sufficient in energy, but as a major provider of energy to the rest of europe. as ukraine has been in the electricity sector up until october, when he's a tax began. we'll have to leave it there. that was the u. s. assistant secretary of state for energy resources jeffrey piatt. thank you so much for joining us. thank you for having. well, india is the 2nd largest global producer of footwear, after china, manufacturing $2000000000.00 pairs a year involving hundreds of production stages that consume energy that's mostly derived from burning coal. but it's not just this waste. the production process
