angeles. before the stars arrive on this year's champagne carpet in germany, all eyes and hopes are on the netflix blockbuster all quiet on the western front. the story follows an idealistic german soldier sent to the front lines in world war one. speaking in hollywood, german culture minister, cloudy, wrote, said parts of the film success is down to its anti wall sentiment or has come so close to us in the past year or so in thinking about the brutal attack on ukraine across even angeles creek and oak latina danco silva, is this a one reason for the success of this film? hark disfigurement for the fact that it's been watched so many times. death is that it's the loudest, possible cry of protest against the war. and i think the feeling for actor albrecht

shook the film is not just about wall. it's about humanity. novel of remark was a human perspective. and not just just a german perspective. um, because it is telling the conditions of the, of a, of a human soul. so to say, the filmy sets in the infamous walla of the trenches, director edward burger said shooting in conditions necessary to replicate reality was incredibly demanding. or the biggest challenge i would say was the mud we filmed and mud a lot. the weather we filmed and in the cold, in the freezing cold it is expected to be a tight race. it's sunday night ceremony after an unpredictable pre oscar season. but the cast and crew of the german language breakout hits will be hoping to walk away with at least one of the faint statuettes our washington bureau chief in us.

really reminders of the current pictures which are coming out of ukraine. so how realistic are the chances for the german team of winning and what are they up against? so there are many great pictures out here one and that is seen as the main competitor is everything everywhere, all at once. this is kind of a action comedy or taking place in a 1000 or so realities it's, it's very modern it's, it's very edgy. and for the 1st time, a woman with asian rude sir michelle. your is connected to for oscar in a leading role. so this definitely is a movie to look out for. the other one is tar. it's about a conductor. she is conducting the berlin feel harmony. so another kind of connection are here. this is kate blanchard. she's also nominated in her leading role and her supporting role is played by nina. ha, she's not nominated,

but another german actress a here. and then of course there is a tom cruise is top gun. this is also a movie which is likely to get at least one oscar. so what else can we expect expect from the ceremony to night? well, it's interesting for the 1st time since 1961. the red carpet is not read it champagne . they wanted to create a kind of a beach she hadn't was fair. we were told and a big awards ceremony is taking place here behind me. in the doll be theater. we will see a lot of george speeches. we definitely will see some tiers and hopefully we won't see what we saw last last year. when bill smith hit the moderator. this year is moderator. jimmy kimmel has a huge security crowd. crew around him, so that that will not happen again. but oh, most definitely we are crossing our fingers for many,

many german oscars tonight. and thank you very much that the bureau chief in washington in his pull reporting from l. i think you us treasury secretary, janet yellen has said the government is not looking at bailing out silicon valley bank after it was shut down by us regulators on friday. the bank is the 16th largest in the united states. authorities say they were worried about the banks. liquidity offered lost money while selling assets. the concerns is const, the concerns from the bank depositors, mainly tech companies to rush to with your funds sparking fears over the wider banking sector. and for more i'm joined in the studio by mattie's listman from d w. business. tell us how could this happen? well, it's important. understand silicon valley bank had a very concentrated client base. so is the tech sector who parked their money?

they're mostly at the same time the bank invested, it's money mostly, and us government securities. and it was an unusual, a large amount that they invested in the securities and they're safe, but with recent interest rate hikes, they lost in value. so a lot of the depositors last week weren't sure if their money was still there and the bank look shaking. so on thursday, a classic bank run happened. and all the deposit went there and tried to get their money out, and the bank just didn't have the cash on hand to really provide it to their positives. so in friday the government stepped in and took control of the bank, and that's where we are right now. the bank is bankrupt and government is trying to resolve the matter. so the government, janet yell and she's saying that they won't bail the bank out. does that mean? this is not as serious as him. i think we don't know yet. the honest answer is that we will see how those shakes out throughout this week. and one thing to know is
9:09 pm
that silicon valley bank was unusually exposed to one sector as it is right. and they had mismanagement practice with their risk. but so that, that could mean that it's contained in this one bank. but the question is, is it connected to other banks in the system? and that's where we don't really know where we stand yet. so there's hope, but we don't know yet. is this a u. s. story or other implications globally? so the other branches of the bank globally have had issues as well. so in the u. k, jeremy hunt to find a secretary there is saying that they're trying to take all steps to prevent run on the bank. bear to prevent companies from having repercussions. and we're hurrying similar stories around branches in other parts of the world. well, the wider picture though, is that we see that the interest rate hikes of central banks are slowly crippling
