also coming out of powerful earthquake shakes solvent, ecuador, killing over a dozen people, injuring hundreds and destroying buildings. authorities rushed to provide the quake also heeds north and per route. and it's one of switzerland's, best known banks, bought a deal to sail, credit suisse to rival view b, as could be just hours away. we'll find out what's behind the takeover b. ah, i'm jared read. welcome to the program. russian president vladimir putin has made what the kremlin is calling a spontaneous visitor to occupy mar, your poll. exiled authorities from the ukrainian city have condemned the trip, which came hours after another unannounced stop in crimea, which is the pennines la russia illegally annexed in 2014. that in turn,
3:02 pm
came on the heels of an arrest warrant issued by the international criminal court on friday, which accuses person of war crimes. with memorial during the unannounced trip build as a working visit by the kremlin, the russian leader travelled by car driving himself to several districts in mariel, pull, chatting with people outside and visiting them in newly built homes, of which he also received updates about reconstruction works in and around the heavily destroyed city with before returning to russia to meet with his top military commander, the port city of mario pole had been home to some 450000 people before the russian siege. much of the strategically important city now lays in ruins, including its drama theatre, which was hit by
3:03 pm
a russian air strike almost exactly one year ago, killing hundreds of people. many of them children who had been sheltering inside. it's also home to the as of style steel works, which became emblematic during the siege of mario pull, a last pocket of ukrainian resistance that culminated in the surrender of the ukrainian soldiers. this is the 1st time putin as believe to have set foot in the russian occupied ukrainian mainland since moscow's full scale invasion last year. it comes a day after we made an unexpected trip to crimea, to mark the 9th anniversary of the black sea peninsulas annexation from ukraine. a move most of the world has denounced as a legal insur, vast of all the largest city in crimea. vladimir putin visited an art school and a children's center. hours after the international criminal court issued an arrest warrant, accusing him of bearing personal responsibility for the abduction, an unlawful deportation of thousands of children from occupied areas of ukraine to

russia. i spoke with dw correspondent, ne connolly and keith, and asked him about the reactions in ukraine to prudence, visit the real sense here in ukraine that this was person's kind of unspoken reaction to for them is lensky grant's presence repeated visit to front lines. you know, there been a lot of criticism, especially in russia, that putin was new, most often in safe locations in moscow. room it to be in a bunker for time keeping away from public occasions, events let alone not coming to the front lines. and so that this wasn't attempts to prove that he is not scared that he feels comfortable. but it didn't really come off at least, didn't really convince many people here in ukraine, i guess that was predictable. but the fact that this all happened at night that his only interaction with locals was a pretty staged kind of event, was the people who had received new housing. and all seemed fairly stilted and
3:05 pm
scripted that didn't really come across as a man who felt particularly safe or relaxed in marable. and it didn't really convince anyone that he himself is convinced that miracle is going to stay in russian hands in the lot. hm. interesting. now, nick, there are of course symbolic battles in war. places like stalingrad waterloo may be even dark mode. now, what does marry a pole symbolized for ukrainians? and the city that was at the top of people's consciousness for a long time. it was basically the location of the 1st major battle of this war. i think people will remember the images all from you mothers escaping from a from a hospital that had been hit with a new new babies or in their arms. the images of that theater that was destroyed with people at sheltering in it basement. and i think just those can ariel shots of a city that basically has been left in ruins. this is city of almost half 1000000
3:06 pm
people and the most conservative estimate say that at most a 3rd probably more like a quarter of the pre war. lation are still there most have left. that is certainly an image that has kind of set itself on people's consciousness. and then you have near the as of style siege ukrainians always holding out there, weeks and weeks coming out, the may say to the spending a long time in russian custody. so this is definitely a city that people's attention is focused on and more broadly, this is still held out in 2014. so even before this current phase, the war, this was see that was very prominent here. and certainly putin's visit there is something that people are paying a lot of attention to here. nick, we see person apparently visiting re rebuilt parts of mary paul. but it's worth underlining that this was mostly destroyed by massive shilling from his troops. you know, is that irony recognized in russia at all? i think if you look at most of the statistics, it seems like the majority of the russian public is trying to pay little attention
3:07 pm
possible to this war. after an initial few weeks of enthusiasm, when it seemed like things were going well, i think people are trying to kind of pay as little attention to this as possible focused on their private lives. but certainly, i think it's a pattern. we've seen it on time again in place like 17 years calissa chance can the lance grecian last summer, now and back moot, basically after those 1st few weeks, russia's army has not be able to make any progress without massive use lottery with basically gonna scorchers tactics and they're just not able to, if they want to, to kind of spare and use precision strike to attack military targets rather than just leveling everything. there is certainly a sense that when russia makes progress on the ground here in ukraine, that normally involves total destruction. and basically, in possibility of normal life of civilians left kind of in the ruins, nicolai and keep their nick, thank you. let's get around for some other headlines now. in bangladesh, at least 19 people have been killed in a bus crash. the vehicle veered off a major freeway and plunged into
3:08 pm
a ditch near the capital dagger. bangladesh has a poor road safety record. a safety association says nearly 10000 people died there in accidents last year. after reaching a tentative agreement, serbia and ca savoy have failed to sign an e u sponsored deal. i aimed at normalizing relations. it comes nearly 25 years after an incursion by serbian forces sparked and nato bombing campaign that ended the conflict. serbia has long refused to recognize course of those 2008 declaration of independence in the last meeting in brussels. a powerful earthquake, his southern ecuador and northern peru on saturday, killing at least 15 people and leaving over 350 injured there were destroyed buildings, cross vehicles, and debris seen in the streets of several cities. a child and a baby are reportedly among the dead. this was the moment when an ordinary trip
3:09 pm
to the supermarket turned into panic for the residence of guire kill with people fleeing outside to safety. the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.8, bought down buildings from the coast to the undoing highlands. most of the destroyed homes house the poor, were old and didn't meet building standards in a country prone to earthquakes. in the small coastal town of ports of oliver residents mourned. the loss of life and the material damage. let me go look on the law. unfortunately, my neighbor's house fell and his family was crushed in the flooded house. he lost 5 family members, or would it? we are poor, humble people who build our houses with our sweat. we have it here. thanks to god, look at the misfortunes befallen us today. at ports of oliver, the quake also destroyed a pair leading to the marine museum, which is napa. the submerged, there's quick was followed by several minor aftershock, so the u. s. national weather service said there is no risk of soon armies. for now,
3:10 pm
emergency services are focusing on finding those who may still be trapped under rubble. and the long and arduous task of rebuilding affected communities here in europe, switzerland's biggest bank u. b. s is in talks to take over its embattled rival credit suisse. now they can go see asians common meet fees and ongoing banking crisis could de stabilize the global financial system. switzerland is preparing emergency measures to fast track . the takeover. e b. s is reportedly asking the state for $6000000000.00 to cover the cost of purchasing credit fries to founded in 1956. now the turmoil was unleashed by the collapse of 2 banks in the united states. or stephen beardsley from dw business is here to break this all down for me. hi steven. now media report say u b. s. has offered to buy credits with rapture $1000000000.00. what's the likelihood of a deal today? and would this help com markets tomorrow? it's hard to know what the likelihood of
3:11 pm
a deal is to day without being inside the negotiations are very, very close to them. we know that the swiss government is likely to want a deal today. however, it's probably going to be putting pressure on regulators and on u. b. s. to make this deal happen. and that's because it doesn't want an uncertain situation to be there as markets reopen again. and the preferred method to unwind is kind of situations is for a take over from another bank. otherwise the regulators would have to step in and take over the bank themselves. it creates a much more clear picture when that's the case, and that's what they want come monday. when markets are reopen, you know, in terms of what it means for markets, it's really hard to say because there is such a psychological aspect to what we've seen going on. credit suisse has better fundamentals than s v be than signature bank. i did make some of the mistakes at the same time. it has been a poorly performing bank for several years now. it's been a lot of legal trouble, things like that. so we knew that in some ways it had been scrutinized more and more deposit. we're leaving for different reasons and that's why it ended up being
3:12 pm
in the crosshairs here. so on the one hand, it's great that we see regulars. it was the government's moving quickly here. they obviously have learned their lesson somewhat from 2008. on the other hand, we don't really know how this is going to go further. ok, steven, you vs wants help from the swiss government for a possible take over. do you know what's being discussed here? from what we understand from those who are close the negotiations, u. b. s is offered $1000000000.00 for the take over would be an all share deal. and what it means is that basically shareholders would take a significant haircut here. $1000000000.00 means about $0.27 a share. the business closed era shares close at about a $1.70 on friday, so you can see the kind of loss of the shareholders would take. they want a 6000000000 dollars and guarantees because there are a lot of open questions around the business. i mentioned the legal troubles, the credit suisse has been in that there's a lot of money, potentially outstanding, their, their legal judgments against them, if their regulatory fines coming against them. and because the swiss government wants the steel to go forward because they have their foot on the gas battle here, it's likely that you will get
3:13 pm
a better deal than not. but there probably will also be pushback from credit suisse on the terms of the steel. so we don't know whole lot, we just know that yes is pushing hard for deal. that's obviously very much in favor . steven, how likely is a financial crisis like 2009 a year that you mentioned earlier that into our memories, something that no one can really say, but obviously when we look at the actions of regulators, look at the actions of a deposit. here we see a lot of fears that are built around 2008. we know that in 2008, the system really collapsed based on some products that were untenable. these kinds of assets that in the end weren't really there. that was these mortgage backed securities where they couldn't actually be fulfilled at the end of the day. these more just couldn't be fulfilled. and they had an entire edifice entire structure of other loans and assets that were built off of them. once that bond got kicked out the entire system collapsed there. we've seen that there isn't as much leverage on
3:14 pm
these assets today. and these assets, these assets are fundamentally good. they tend to be a treasury bills. they tend to be government debt. it's just because interest rates have been raised so fast, their value has dipped somewhat. the ultimate question here is about depositors, though it's such a psychological aspect as i mentioned, you have to only fear that there's a bank run to want to go to a bank and take your money out. you don't have to believe that there's a fundamental problem with the bank. you just have to believe that others will believe that there is. so it's a self fulfilling prophecy and stopping that is going to be the real question here . and that's something that i think we're going to develop in the coming weeks. what's the best way to do that? if a, basically from d. w business, thanks so much for breaking that down for us. sports now and in bonus league of football dog men got back to winning ways against cologne, scoring a whopping 6 goals on the way to an easy victory door, and captain marco placed at school twice to become the clubs all time record goal scorer. he 2nd goal, rounded out the 61 final school dockman move into 1st place at least until by
