ah, ah ah ah, this is daily news long from berlin, growing pressure on israel's far right government to hold controversial judicial reforms. demonstrators block televi highway after prime minister netanyahu dismisses his defense minister for speaking out against the plan overhaul. now israel to president has added his voice to calls for an immediate stop to the

reforms also coming up. germany faces it's most disruptive strike action in 3 decades. public transport rail and airport south nationwide are walking off the job to demand more pay to counter a cost of living. crisis and controversy surrounds a visit by taiwan former president, managing go to china. the 1st time a former or sitting president has been to the mainland in 70 years. and an and dramatic portuguese moto g. p, a reading world champion, francesco bon yacht emerges. victoria is to lay down a marker for his rivals, highlights of that, and the rest of the weekend sporting acts and coming up. ah,
9:02 am
really, it's good to have you with us. israel and media are reporting that prime minister benjamin netanyahu is sent to suspend controversial plans to overhaul the judiciary . according to sources in his li could party opposition to the plants escalated on sunday after netanyahu fired his defense minister for speaking out against the proposed reforms. israel has seen sustained protests and the overhaul was announced . months ago. the plan would allow parliament to override supreme court decisions. and for more on this week and go straight to rebec, her ritter. she joins us from jerusalem. rebecca, that yeah, we'll address the nation shortly. what do you expect? he'll say that's right. we're expecting maybe even at yahoo to address a nation in a little under half an hour. we are, of course we don't have confirmation, but we are expecting, as you've rightly reported, that he will be calling for a suspension or in fact suspending the legislation as it stands at the moment in
9:03 am
the face of this mounting pressure. benjamin netanyahu has been pushing on with this legislation, despite weeks of protests, more than 12 weeks now of more than weekly protests against these reforms. but they were certain to push through. they were determined to push through, but now it suddenly looking lightly could sources and other other people really local media here, definitely reporting that he is expected to push back on that. but at the moment, as we speak with the scenes from the committee, the constitutional committee that's charged with writing and setting up and pushing this legislation through. they are still meeting, they're still going ahead as normal. they're hoping that they can many of the members hoping that they can still push through with what certainly looking like will be hearing from benjamin netanyahu that, that won't be happening today. now this judicial reform was a central campaign promise of the far right parties that help netanyahu return to
9:04 am
power. how would it withdrawal affect his governing coalition? well, it's really hard to say at this stage. we have some members, mainly from the ultra orthodox parties that form up his coalition, part of the coalition that they will support whichever way benjamin netanyahu decides to go this morning. but you've got all the members of the far right party, the far right faction, saying that they are not willing to compromise, that they're not willing to agree to any suspension. so it is becoming increasingly shaky. this coalition and wasting benjamin netanyahu. kazi or benjamin at yahoo, that's becoming increasingly isolated. it's going to be now also up to the opposition to decide what they are going to do. we really don't know exactly what will happen and just how the other parties will react to do any suspension of this legislation. but it certainly could have a major effect on the current governing coalition. of course, no one talking about a new election, but, you know,
9:05 am
that's certainly one of the things that may also be on the cars at this stage. it's just too early to say would withdraw all of these proposals that are on the table now. mean the end of the government's plans to reform the judiciary that's probably unlikely at this stage. it certainly seems that if they manage to maintain as coalition that they will try and push ahead with them after the holidays. we've got the possible holidays coming up here that perhaps there will be, as is everyone's calling the u. s. the president of israel as well, a cooling for a compromise. we may see some of these legislative reforms damp and down or slightly changed to be more palatable for all members of both the opposition and the members of the far right. as i said, it's still too early to know exactly how this is going to play out in the cold, but it's unlikely that will say no roof reforms being pushed. even members of the
9:06 am
opposition, even, you know, almost a majority of people in the country are saying that they agree to reforms to the supreme court. they just aren't unhappy with the current plans that the coalition want to push through and at the pace at which they are trying to push it through. so unlikely that they'll be dropped altogether. but it is looking more and more likely that they will be suspended for now. rebecca, readers our correspond end joining us this morning from jerusalem. thank you for the latest airports and railway and bus stations have shut down in germany's most disruptive strike in 30 years. members of 2 of the biggest 3 unions have walked off the job for 24 hours. they're demanding higher wages and the transport sector to combat the rising cost of living. and for more i'm joined now by our reporters julia, so deli at berlin central station and emily gordon at frankfurt airport. emily,
9:07 am
let's start with you. frankfurt airport is one of europe main aviation hubs, but it looks like there's not much going on there to day. there no, i mean we're standing and the departure hall, a frank for airport and it is pretty deserted. i must admit, if you look behind me on to the departure board, every single fly has been cancelled. or honestly, you'll see more more, more above all these cancellations m over in total we've had one over a 1000 flights that have been canceled. i've come to effect over a hundreds of thousands of travelers. even if you just wanted to change here, that won't be possible to day. and we spoken to a few travelers and one store in particular really struck me. we were talking to an elderly man. he arrived here last night from egypt and has been stranded here ever since. so he has been waiting here for hours overnight and has now been waited. it now is waiting to be picked up from friends and family. and i mean, that is just incredible and all other travelers that we've been talking to say
9:08 am
they've been taken to smaller regional airports and from which they've been taken to a frank, apple pie bus adding another 5 to 6 hours and travel time. but of course, you know, this is not for nothing and we just earlier saw a strike a motion sort of a go through the airport here. and people are, workers are striking here for of, for higher wages amid a rising cost of living crisis. and of course, these strikes are a, you know, a way to put pressure on the ongoing negotiations and to deal with and the inflation and the rising cost to living really, julia, in your, at berlin's deserted central station. tell us more about what's behind this strike . what exactly are a unions asking for? yes, as emily said, it's all about a salary negotiations to help workers of the public transport sector a better deal with the effects of inflation. germany has experienced in this past
9:09 am
year. since russia's war of aggression against ukraine, it's highest levels of inflation in the post war period. and so a unions to of the biggest unions in germany have come together and called for this strike to day to put pressure on negotiators to increase salaries. they are asking, depending on which union, for a salary increase between 10 and 12 percent. and we've seen the inflation levels, especially hitting the cost of energy and the cost of food people seeing that when they have to pay their bills when they have to go shopping at the supermarket. inflation rates are up to around 20 percent for both energy and food. and the fact that the country has pretty much come to a standstill today in terms of transport shows how much power union still have in germany. also compared to other european countries. and that they have a negotiating a power with the state and the local authorities. and trying to get the salary
9:10 am
increases, the cost of living is rising everywhere. and emily, germany is not the only country thing. these kinds of walks i walk out lately, is it? no, not at all. i mean in the u. k. alone, we've also seen several walk out several strikes, whether it's a teachers, barrister in the health care sector. and when it comes to the railway workers, they will say, been striking repeatedly. heathrow airport is looking at strikes over the holiday. and then, i mean, if you look at france, we've been through with, that's been the country, has been swept by by strikes and my some instructions and the president my course decision to push through an unpopular bill to raise the retirement age in the country. so that obviously disrupt movement as well. and then in spain, we've also seen a strikes at the airport. i think in march, it was that security walkers had been striking on tuesdays. so strikes all over europe was really just reflects that the problem with inflation across europe. you
9:11 am
know, this is not just a german problem. this is a problem that all european countries are facing on workers are standing up for their rights. and i'm just saying, you know, the cost of living is rising and so we just need to rise as well. it's a problem as you say there a problem that many people can relate to. and julia, does this protest the strike have public support in germany? well we know that the unions, i believe that the have public support in terms of this strike obviously people know, even though they can't take the train to day, they can't fly to day. that it is because of this cost of living crisis. and most people in germany are feeling it, but we will definitely also try to talk to some people here today and try to hear what you know, people affected by the strike. actually think about the motives behind the strike

9:17 am
a lot of political debate and attention centered on his visit and mar himself while he has is not going to meet any high ranking chinese officials. he does want to engage in dialogue with students as he claims in p r c. now that of course, for the piano, sienna c, c, p is always going to be a political. they see many things. in fact, all things as sort of having a political tend to it. and he says he hopes to bring about peace. there must be a political assigned to it. doesn't there mass trips? there is a huge controversy in taiwan. some are worried and might send the wrong message at the wrong time. what's your assessment? right, so the thing is with mind, joe, he's been known to be very beijing friendly. and at this point in time, what we, what we are seeing is that beijing is adding a lot of military pressure from exercises one putting pressure economy economically on taiwan. and so there is concern that ma visit sends
9:18 am
a signal of weakness or capitulation to the p. c. and but my post claims that it's 4 piece. so this sort of 2 sides of the debate really are creating the control vesee around this particular visit. this is a historic why do you think he chose to go there and why do you think he chose to go there? now? she's been way so much official reason is that he's going to pay respects to the ancestors who come from 9 in china. now, i guess his move now is to show that he is still a influential political player. this comes at a time when the camp is trying to figure out their candidates for the president election. so i suppose my trying to leave an imprint that forces to the debate in taiwan to move toward some sort of conciliation toward being houses are being received and beijing making it sort of awkward because they don't recognize
9:19 am
the government in time when they don't recognize my presidential status, but yet i think they don't want to, you know, over the sort of reject it so they've allowed him to visit how they're going to handle the visit. has remained the question. there's been questions over his security detail. so i suppose fishing is trying to handle it as smooth way as possible, but very my patient also has other major visits at this point in time to repeat the going thing portions and the malaysians also going for a while or so. i think on the in china month visit will probably not get very much of an airing, but mas visit to china is very likely to overlap with the, with the taiwanese presidents, wasted and saying when strip to the us. is that just a coincidence? so i think there may be some reason why there's overlap, but it's not possible to know from the outside. so maybe mom wants to shift the focus away from tie. but all that is not completely known at this point. it's not something that might stated out openly and tom from the national university of
