houghton, often to day, 6 years to the day after britain began the process of leaving the european union. we're opening a new chapter and our relationship together as friends and partners. we're now looking forward to the it's not a form. the german president also praise childs as long interest and environmental causes a topic that will determine the agenda for the 3 day visit. well, our correspondent, emily cor dean has been following all the events taking place here. berlin, the stake, listened to her impressions. i think it's safe to say that british soft power has arrived in germany, and it is not uncommon for the u. k. to use the royals as a way of a form of diplomacy. really, if you look at 1964, the queen made her 1st state visit to germany and it marked the beginning of reconciliation between the 2 countries. i think you can observe, as you can see a similar theme in this as it really after years of fighting really over over break
7:04 pm
certain the ongoing breaks that negotiations. and, you know, that ultimately finally culminated in the, in the wins or a framework that, you know, we've now seen an end to this fighting, thankfully. and now as i'm quite assigned, my a said a new chapter can begin. and i think that's exactly what this visit represents an end to breaks and negotiations of breaks that disputes and the start of something new. and i think the visit of can charles is also a fine from the u. k. m. that it really values its partnership with germany and it's friendship really and that's reflected not just in, you know, the, in the, in the kings visits, you know, but also i think, equally on the other side, if you look to germany, the way has been received a welcoming fine. tell us emily charles is spending 3 days care in germany. what's next on his agenda? well as he kind of expected it for a very packed schedule,
7:05 pm
really and we've got appointments, am tomorrow where he's going to visit a german of british military units to illustrate german, the corporation between the jamie in the u. k. within ne. so he's also going to visit an organic farm, a so called broader when eco, eco village, that sort of, you know, reflect for his interest in sustainability in the environment. but i think most importantly, he's going to hold a speech in the german bought the psych tomorrow and report of it. he's going to hold that speech and german now as some of you might know him, his late father, philip, he also spoke, jammed fluently. and so it's going to be very interesting to see how king charles holds up against his late father. emily, how popular are the royals here in germany? because we saw plenty of people add down that to brandenburg gate coming out to see at charles and camilla. right. yeah, we saw a fair amount of people come out for their some historic day, really am. and i,
7:06 pm
if you look at the polls over 50 percent of germans are said to be ardent fans or the royal family. and i think that has many reasons, you know, on the one hand, i think they enjoy the glitz on the glam and also the gossip that the, that surround the royal family. but also if you look at the history of the royal family, there are lots of family ties. i mean, queen victoria married a german prince. and this sort of historical connection that with this historical family connection also runs through generations. i mean there are still cousins who live here and so lots that connects some of germany and the u. k. and i think that's one of that's some but these are some of the reasons why they're so popular over here. thanks. emily dw corresponded to emily gordon, that's just as you hear in berlin. ukraine's president vladimir zalinski has extended an invitation to chinese eater, shooting, paying to visit keith. speaking to reporters from the associated press, zalinski said that keith was ready and willing to host. she added that the pair
7:07 pm
hadn't talked since rushes invasion. the invitation comes after the chinese leader met with vladimir putin in moscow on what she called a piece mission last week. beijing has said that lines of communication with ukraine remain open at the jury of the world press photo contest as announced it for regional winners that many of the images highlight the reality of the war in ukraine. they were taken in march during the siege of mad you pull after russian forces invaded the country. in february 2022, they document the atrocities that followed before the city fell in may. one of the images, a photo of a heavily pregnant woman following an air strike on maternity hospital has become one of the defining images of the war. or earlier i talk to you of jenny model, let regional winner of the world press photo contest. and we talked about the story behind the iconic picture. he took the injured pregnant woman in my tuple, and about how all these events had an impact on know these events. you definitely
7:08 pm
cannot forget, you know, you want to forget. but the photographs and videos, we sure take a and where you pose my friend mister soft turn off and we will try to forget it, but it's so difficult. it's so impossible. and but photographs will always remind us what happened will happen there. what's happened there and and this particular picture we are talking about. you know that irina are 32 years old, are injured pregnant war and was carried by the rescue or curious on the watermelon blanket in front of barrett. there was killed by rescue workers. the rush to take her to the ambulance because she was
7:09 pm
do you know in that condition that she might get the 1st aid as possible? she had it can be wound or her body or you kind of see on a picture but was huge. and unfortunately, unfortunately, she and her baby did not survive in all day. the doctors tried to do the best and we speak to them after trying to identify what happened to them later, but important to us that they did. they didn't survive. and i spoke to her husband, ah, and he told me that she was, ah, searching for her like in a different hospitals in the more ex, looking from different by just trying to find her. and in the hospital number 2, she found her and,
7:10 pm
and they buried her with her neighbors on the cemetery in maple you're in the shelling and nowadays he's trying as well to get what's happened and trying to to build a new life broad. that was if any, my let got regional winner of the world press photo contest talking to me earlier here on d. w. well, an open letter signed by young musk is calling for a pause on the development of more powerful artificial intelligence system, citing risks to society and humanity. mosques, tesla is currently using ai for itself, driving cars, but the c e o has raised security concerns about a i, along with 1000 artificial intelligence experts and industry leaders, the letter colds on developers working on systems more powerful than open ai is new to launched g p t for to post their work for 6 months to make time for safety
7:11 pm
protocols that would prevent potential economic and political disruptions. i asked sophie, car, albany from d. w signs. what is meant by the risk of potential economic and political disruptions. that is an incredibly good question to use a cliche, a if you re, between the lines. what i think is happening here is you've got a bunch of incredibly intelligent people, incredibly powerful as well in the tech industry saying, oh what, what have we done here? and they're almost screaming we need outside help. i mean, if i was, if you were to allow me of fly editorialize ation here, this is a bit like a country developing a nuclear bomb dropping is and then saying, oh wow, is that what it does? and then being surprised when other countries want to develop one as well to the tech themselves. they really don't know what they're doing here. and they say it as well at the top of the letter that even the experts don't truly understand. com, predict, or reliably control these sorts of incredibly powerful as they call them,
7:12 pm
chew, and competitive ai, artificial intelligence systems. um, so it's, it's very difficult to know, but what they do, and also quite telling here they're calling for capable regulatory authorities. well, resource institutions to cope with dramatic economic and political disruptions. so that kind of saying this is already out of control. we need outside help. we are unable to regulate ourselves and, and quite rightly your l must. it's a bit disingenuous really because ellen musk has raised concerns about artificial intelligence for years and yet has continued to invest in ah, the artificial intelligence was on the board of open a i is still an advisor. so it's a bit of a weird situation and it has been called sort of moral panic. we, but we seem to start the plenty to digest there. so for what
7:13 pm
safety protocols could be implemented from may i think you've touched on it there a little bit. but what could we potentially be seeing why i think 1st of all we, it would be quite wise to slow down the deployment of a i, and i think that's sort of what they're talking about. so, and it goes counter to their very principal of open ai releasing something and allowing the public to get acquainted with it to become aware of a i and to use it. and to become i, i get an understanding of what it does, and at the same time, not unleashing this in such a way that it becomes an uncontrollable live experiment on the well population. as it is, you know, every time you feed a query into open a, our, into a, a, an artificial intelligence like this, you are actually helping it gets stronger, get more intelligence. and so maybe this, like, i think that may be their thing. you know, we need to roll this back. they don't want to have more powerful artificial
7:14 pm
intelligence systems to come in place. and they want to have government bodies. they want to have educational institutions, i'm sure as well to get on the right page to get to get up to speed with with the thought which method is, are there were basically so i really do feel if i'm a again, allowed to editorial. i just little bit to re between the lines because it's quite sort of vague, this open letter they're asking for outside help. they're saying we've unlinked something here that perhaps we shouldn't have. so it's difficult to know what exactly they want in detail terms, but they are saying we need to slow this down. some was even though the genie is very much out of the bottle, including many will cliches. with that one came from plenty to digest their so think are i'll be thinking about this after the show for figure avenue from the w signs. well, before we go, here's a reminder of our top story. britton's king charles is in berlin on his 1st overseas visits since becoming monarch charles and his wife camella were welcomed
