and for more on this, let's speak to denise wall. she is a freelance journalist in helsinki. denise, can you tell us more about who has come out on top here? yes, indeed. thanks for having me on the show. well, it has been, as you said earlier, a real nail biter of a vote count with the results showing a win for the opposition parties, especially the center, right? national coalition party and the, the local public broadcaster here, the finish broadcasting companies projections put the national coalition party, lead by pet 3 or 4 in the lead with 48 seats. that means they've picked up 10 more seats than in the previous election. followed as you said by the populace, right wing fins party. and they've added to their tally by 7 seats since the previous election to come away with 46 feet. and that's their best election outcome . ever. and finally,

prime minister on the marines left to leaning social democratic party ended the evening was 43 seats, and they picked up just 3 more than 4 years ago. now all of these 3 big parties, as we said earlier, picked up more more seats and 4 years ago. but the national coalition party really searched forward with those additional 10 seats and santa marion has conceded the election as a result. so help put this into context for us a little bit. are these indications that finland is another european country that is moving further to the right of the political spectrum? well, i would say that the answer to that question is yes. and sort of of course, a to nights upset performance by the right wing fins part. he may seem like alert to the right, but one thing that we do have to remember is that that party has been performing more or less consistently in the poll since 2011. and they've been capturing just

under 20 percent of the vote. and that was even enough to put them in government in 2015. and at the same time, we have to remember that thunder marine's left leaning government was sort of an exception in the past few elections as the coalition government since 2003 had been centrist or sent a right. and in fact, the last social democratic crime in the left office in 2003 after serving 2 terms. now with the election of the conservative national coalition party, that overall conservative or center right, trend merely continues. and i think one thing we need to remember is that the s d p is the only left leaning party to have picked up additional seats. in this election, the other government partners which are left leading, also the all hemorrhage vote to support in this election. now what about prime ministers on that marine herself?

she is very popular. could we see her involved in the new government? it's hardly likely what's gonna happen as you, as you said earlier, is that petrie or poor, he is going to lead discussions to form the new coalition government. and there was a lot of posturing early in the campaign season with parties during lead red lines about whom they would or would not work with. but that rhetoric has softened somewhat. but in the days ahead, that softening of those hard line positions will be tested as or post sends out a list of questions for the other coalition candidates to answer. so that he can select his partners and begin building his administration's program. now if the national coalition party and the fins party agree to corporate, it's very likely that santa marine will take the s d p into the opposition. and that's due to a philosophical gulf between the social democrats and the populace. will thank you so much for bringing us up to speed there. that is journalist denise,
