about the universe and the rest of that were series. 42, the answer almost everything in this week w ah ah, ah . the state of we news lying from berlin, donald trump liens not guilty. the former u. s. president pleads 34 counts of falsifying business records. the charges are linked to hush money, allegedly paid to $3.00 people, including an adult film actor, also on the program to finland, joints, nato, the finished flag is raised as the alliance welcomes it's 31st member on

a day of ceremony and emotion in brussels. and as britain presses the head with controversial plants to crack down on migration across the english channel, we look at the situation from the french side of the border. ah, i'm nicole really tell our viewers on p b s in the united states and all of you around the world. welcome. former us president donald trump has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges in court in new york. trump showed little motion entering the court building ahead of denying 34 counts of falsifying business records. the charges are linked to hush money payments, allegedly made to $3.00 people, including an adult film. actor trump was driven to court and a motorcade from his trump tower complex in new york is now heading back to his estate in morrow. lagossi and we can speak now to scott anderson,
10:02 pm
a former us diplomatic government attorney. now a visiting fellow at the brookings institution. in washington dc. good to see you. so trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts. and supporters are calling this to which and how serious are these charges? they're definitely serious, but they all relate to a nexus of one specific type of conduct. a series of falsified records, probably almost certainly related to each other that all tie back to this alleged payment to stormy daniels are related regarding their possible extramarital affair . in terms of the actual criminal exposure that or president trump may face, there is much more serious counts from a couple of other jurisdictions that we understand maybe results indictments down the road. this is kind of the 1st one to cross the line to actually issued indictment. and in some ways, one of the more minor ones. but nonetheless, it's notable and substantial. and certainly historic because it's the 1st floor president ever faced. these sorts of criminal charges,
10:03 pm
uncharted waters. it's what we've been saying since the indictment became public, talk us through the legal proceedings coming next. where do we go from here? so from here we're going to see a number of kind of pre trial matters. that good need to get resolved. there's going to be questions about former president trump's ability to travel that don't appear to been result at this hearing, the least that we've heard of so far. there is going to be questions then about a true challenges to potentially some of the legal proceedings. we have seen former president trump and his legal counsel in other proceedings around the country really be quite aggressive in mounting legal challenges on a variety of fronts. some said as, as part of an effort to slow proceedings or to make them kind of as onerous as possible and not an uncommon legal strategy. it's likely we're going to see something similar here. we may also see legal proceedings over an issue that we saw hinted at the hearing today, which is the fact that our president, trump, and some of his supporters and people around him. sometimes issue statements that
10:04 pm
are fairly aggressive, hostile, or can even be interpreted as threatening violence to the people. on the other side of this legal proceeding, we saw debate most recently about a tweet for president trump issued that seem be threatening violence towards district attorney. brag the judge doesn't seem interested in putting up with much of that, but if those reflectivity is continue, then we may see confrontations, debates about it around the judge, or possibly even restrictions or sanctions against for president trump, or some people around him. if those measures continue, then ultimately we're going to see a criminal trial, presumably unless there's some sort of plea agreement. but that still may be weeks if not months down the road at this point out. how can all of this effect comes chances of running again as the republican presidential candidate could he still run even after possibly being convicted somewhere down the line? there is no legal bar on him running after being convicted of this particular
10:05 pm
criminal offense on there are a handful of criminal offenses that pose issues to a re election. all those constitutional questions about the extent to which they apply the scenario. but none of them are really at issue here. again, the state law violation that won't inhibit its ability to enter in the office. now of course, it could result in a jail sentence, i think anywhere from one to 4 years can be the range of a 1st degree felony such as this by my understanding in new york state. setting aside any other mitigating or enhancing factors. so that obviously could complicate serving us president in the white house office is situation i'm not sure we've ever seen encountered before. so i'm generally not sure how exactly we would square that if you were to be elected president while facing that sort of sense. but again, that's still a way down the road at this point. learning by doing and the united states today, scott anderson in washington, d. c. thank you so much. thank you. appreciate it. finland has become nato's 31st member. the alliance has headquarters in brussels has seen
10:06 pm
a day of ceremony and emotion. finland's president described the occasion as historic and nato secretary general said. the expansion shows that russia's attempts to weaken the alliance of backfired. finland flag hoisted high over nato headquarters in brussels. and as anthem's ring out helsinki, waves good bye to 8 security policy of the past. a move prompted to directory by moscow, aggression toward ukraine. the era of military known alignment, you know, of history has gone to an end, a new era big use. it's contrary maximize, he has its own security. so does finland. nato membership per strengthens our international position and to room for maneuver. nato allies take a collective defense pledge under which an attack on one is viewed as an attack on
10:07 pm
all that means finished. troops are no bound to protect other members of the military alliance and finland, which shares a long border with russia. can no count on backup from nato allies like the united states, france and germany. this is the day of joy because sir finland is se gaining more security and nato is getting stronger by the membership of finland. but we plan that finland and sweden could join together. they couldn't sweden and finland both applied for membership last year. but no stock home has been left standing on the sidelines. it's been held up by our political tiff after turkey accused. we didn't of offering safe haven to terrorists. hungary to has been holding out on ratification a source of frustration for the swedish foreign minister. we would like to see this happen as soon as possible. there is no reason for neither the turkish parliament
10:08 pm
over them go in parliament to make any for further delays. russia used nay to as a threat to its security. and once key of bard from an ever joining the alliance insists its door remains open. but there is no clarity on when ukraine may be invited to walk through it. for no nato nations said they'll keep arming t if. as this alliance grows from 30 to 31 of pretty significant day for nato. and that is why i asked our correspondent, terry shelton, brussels who's been add the nato headquarters all day long to walk us through the highlights. it definitely was a big day for nato. this is a day that even 2 years ago we could not have imagined to happening in finland was, was quite content to be non aligned, militarily, believing that this was safest for it. sharing a border with russia and, and not wanting to invite more russian threats. at the same time, once russia invaded ukraine,
10:09 pm
all bets were off and finland's entire perspective on its own security changed. so definitely washing that flag b. b raised at nato headquarters to day. i think it, it was an emotional moment definitely for the fins, but also for a lot of people watching finland take this historic step. i know that everyone around me thought it was, it was very momentous. but the accession of finland also leaves a couple of other countries wanting to get into the alliance. wishing that they had joined along with finland and that's not to sweden is also ukraine, which has been promised that it will eventually become a member of nato. let's hear what secretary general yann's children brake had to say to ukraine, which is asking to be let in as well. you, craig, move o'connor, i'm a member of the launched thesis, been stated again again, and i thought was on it's the same time. we all realize that for it to make any meaningful progress on this issue or the 1st step is to ensure that ukraine
10:10 pm
prevails as a sovereign in the foundation. and that's reason why a dollar's importance are providing unprecedented level of support and will continue to continue to do so on war. we are also are in constant litrell's contract with the ukrainians and also providing training. and terry rushes full scale invasion of ukraine prompted finland to abandon the decades old policy of non alignment and join nato. were the fins afraid they might be next i went to finland shortly after the invasion to talk to them about this in stories for d. w. and what they were saying at the time, and this was before they had made the decision to join the alliance, is that after the invasion of ukraine, it wasn't necessarily so that they believed russia would come after fin the next. but that they could no longer rule it out. and for decades, finland had been quite content to quit felt quite secure in his policy. it did not
10:11 pm
believe that russia would come across the border, but that was no longer certain after this invasion of ukraine. so in fact, even while they didn't, they weren't certain that russia would come after them next. and certainly with all of russia's military assets sent to wage war on ukraine, it wasn't going to be imminent. they simply felt they could no longer risk, not having the back up of other allies just in case. in the meantime, sweden is still on the waiting list. isn't that what are their hopes of joining the defense align soon? all of the those answers lie in ankara because while hungary also has not yet ratified sweden's membership, it the problem really lies with the turks and turkish president dresser type air to one has said he does not believe sweden has done enough to join the alliance. even as nato secretary general stilton burge and the other allies point out that sweden has fulfilled the pledges it made in a trilateral agreement made with turkey and finland at the madrid summit last july
10:12 pm
. so i think everyone thinks that there may be some loosening of the turkish position after the the elections in may. but that's the only hope now because sweden says it's done everything it can to change turkey's mind. now in finland, of course, wanted to join in order to to secure it's border, but they also bring a lot to the table. right. so what, what value does finland bring to nato now that it's a member? there are some very interesting things about finland in this respect. it is one of the best equipped militaries in all of europe, perhaps in all the world because they intended to defend their territory alone forever. and so they were quite equipped to do this. all men of military age are trained, they remain in the reserves. many women as well. it has one of the largest artillery stock piles in all of europe. and so finland,
10:13 pm
i has already trained with nato for decades. this, there's been, they're very inter operable with, with nato's military. in fact, it was almost instantaneous that finland passed all of the obligations, all of the requirements that nato has for a new member. it was simply getting the ratification of all 30 other members that has held up the membership until this day. but it was still the fastest succession process in nato's recent history, w corresponding terry schultz. many thanks. and for the other side of things, i asked the w, correspond and j r. c. manascale. how the kremlin reacted to fill in succession. on the military level, the russian defense minister said, you shall go. the said, did this move increases the potential of escalation in ukraine, but also already yesterday, russia said that it will increase the mood to recap abilities. its own military copper booth is in the regions close to the border with finland. today, the spokesman of the russian president nicholas coff said elaborated on dot he said
10:14 pm
that russia will be observing and reacting to nato's moves in finland. so it is a quite a reactive posture if you issue if you want. is this just saber rattling or are we actually going to see russia up the anti i think the depends on how russia enterprise this politically. and i think politically, russia found itself in a sort of a paradox. you see, one of the reasons why russia is said it's a cast ukraine was to prevent what it sees as an encroachment of natal to its own borders. now, as a result, finland joins the alliance in naples borders. nato's border with russia doubles. so the russian sportsman or russian president can try to, to, he said that this on one hand, this movement isn't encroachment on russia's for security and interest. but on the
10:15 pm
other hand, it's a different case. finance is not as anti russian as ukraine as he put it. so he really tried to play down politically, i think, to, to, to get out of this paradoxical situation. yeah. so, and we'll get right back to you, stay with us for a minute while we move on to bella. ros where troops have begun. training on tactical nuclear weapons deployed on its territory by russia. the move has drawn widespread criticism, and according to the russian defense ministry and iskander em operational, tactical missile system has been delivered to bella, rosie, and forces. they have begun training on how to use it. that's comes a day before president alexander lucas shanker said to me to president vladimir putin in moscow. i was to go now is your gosh, i want to ask you how worrying is that? if this is a follow up for to vladimir, put in an announcement from late march,
10:16 pm
and when he said that he wants to station tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of belarus. and then today we've heard about bella, russian soldiers going to russia for training. we've also heard that apparently some bella russian jets were modernized in a way that they can now transport nuclear warheads. but we didn't hear anything about actually transporting the nuclear warheads from russia to bearers. and i think this points to the fact that there is still disagreement between russia and bela restoring, the making. and this will be something we'll be following closely with a like subtle cache anchor goes to moscow tomorrow. exactly. he's heading there to morrow. he will be there for 2 days of talked with vladimir putin. it sounds very much like there is lots to talk about. what can we expect? yes, i think her i finger on one hand to put in both of them. they want to send this matters of message of unity of strength. you know, they, that russia is supporting its ally, also as a sort of reaction to need those in,
10:17 pm
expand nato's enlargement today. so this will also come, this also comes in the time when russia is preparing for the expected ukrainian counter offensive. but on the other hand, i think this is, this really also shows that there is, there are still a lot of questions that the bull feeders need to talk about. we don't know who, who will, who is expected to operate the weapons stationed in belarus. or we don't know who will have the ultimate command, so they will, there's a lot of things that they need to clarify and that we will be observing if and what sort of agreements they will reach. christina, okay, good speaking to you. joining us tonight from reagan and let's take a look now some of the other stories making news around the world today. russian authorities have charged a 26 year old war with terrorism and connection with the bombing of a cafe in st. petersburg blast killed, influential pro war blogger of law len to tars keith. the kremlin,
