7:02 pm
been spying on both russia and ukraine's military and gathering intelligence on its nato allies. us officials say russia or pro russian supporters are likely behind the leech. and for more on this, we're joined now by frank leg, which a former british military intelligence officer. first of all, frank, given the dis, information tactics that are part of this conflict. how do we know that these documents are authentic? well, good evening. we don't know that they're authentic is. yeah. so, but there are some reason the big difference is the 1st of which i've already mentioned in the pentagon requested the justice department on a date will have ordered its own inquiry. they've asked the justice department, the doctors to look into the counter intelligence aspect of it. so what the american certainly wants us to believe probably correctly, that these are authentic. now also it's worth saying that from what i've seen of these documents, i haven't seen them all. they do look the kind of thing that would comprise
7:03 pm
a daily situation report or a daily update as i think now. cool. so on the face of it, they look pretty general, but of course they've been altered on the alterations of the interesting thing actually. and assuming they're, they're real or partly real. how damaging is it and to whom? to have anyone with internet access essentially read what could be u. s. intelligence on russia and ukraine and allies a military turns not w u t. all the information that's been revealed is open source. you and i can find it out on specialist with books and websites from experts, things like the shell expenditure rates or certain types of weapon system ranges and what have you, what we couldn't find out though the things that are rather more disturbing to russia, that for example, 12,
7:04 pm
you creating brigades are being trained 9 of them in the west. and the interesting thing here is this is cause or other more consternation in russia than it has in the west. russian commentators are saying that we really have a problem here. the ukrainians have that kind of scales of readiness for people and equipment. then this is dangerous to happen. alterations made which would indicate some form of this information effort, particularly to russian casualties. but there are so transparently false that no were taken seriously. and what kind of possible consequences could there be on the expected ukrainian spring offensive and possibly in the perspective intelligence services and counter intelligence services in russia for instance. well, the 1st thing is that these revelations, if that's what they don't indicate any intentions or plans,
7:05 pm
what they indicate is really the level of support being offered by the americans, a bit more detail than weapon systems and so forth. the important thing is that there's no intelligence reveals on times, dates, places of any planned counter attack. the damage is significant. it's not so much intelligence given it's the damage to us ukrainian trust and us is on the did the west more widely has suffered over the last few months. and they did the last year, quite understandably, from ukraine and say, look, we're prepared to give you information about what we needed to be secure, what we can't have a leaks like this. and that's the problem. that's the real damage done by these documents. it's the damage of trust between the western, specifically the us and you crate. can you credit trust the us with confidential information? even information in this case isn't necessarily strategically operationally damaging. ok, well thank you for that insight on this developing story. frank led, which a former british military intelligence officer. thank you. nick. chinese

7:08 pm
a single mis step could spock a conflict that neither side is prepared for and for more on the seat of your correspondent william yang joined us from time. hey, william china is ramping up his rhetoric here and in circling taiwan as we just heard how serious are the tensions getting you think so earlier today, reuters reported 10 naval ships from both sides actually held a stand off across right around the median line, which is the unofficial demarcation that separates time one in china. and so i think that just reflects the closeness and also the proximity of the both sides military aircraft and also military vessels are getting into each other. and as some of the videos that we showed displayed and shared by the tony's defense ministry, these are the re, i think, tens times. and i think there could be
7:09 pm
a lot of miscalculation, involved if any side decided to violate the routine drills and practices. and just went one step further to infringe on the other side territory. apart from that stand off in which i would use worships, took place in what other ways is the government in taiwan responding to the drills . so the defense ministry continues to share, very up to date information about the intrusion by chinese military fighter, just because we know that they have been conducting these so grades on tactics for the last few years. but over the last 2 days, we've seen more than 70 chinese fighter just been detected and more than 40 of them have actually cross the median line or flew into the south western air defense identification zone. and these are also just part of china as larger military

tactics to show that they have different types of capabilities to really put pressure on taiwan. and so i think the companies government wants the public to know that they are keeping a very close eye on these situations, bad things and not to panic and over sure the information so that the public is going to have a different reaction that the government wants all right, well, thank you for that insight w correspondent, william yang. thank you. talk francis led an easter sunday mass at saint peter's square in the vatican. in his eastern message to the world of the pope asked russians to seek the truth about their country's invasion of ukraine . he also pealed her dialogue between israelis and palestinians following recent violence. tens of thousands of the catholic faithful gathered in saint peter's square. visitors, cardinal's priests and nuns, and of course, frances, the pontiff, was recently hospitalized for bronchitis,
