technologies work, how they can go with how they can also go terribly. watch it now on youtube. ah ah, this is deed of the news ly from berlin friend president manuel my call lays out his vision for europe. during a state visit to the netherlands, my call emphasizes economic reform. but the french leader makes no mention of the controversy he created with his comments on taiwan over the weekend or so coming up to europe,

towns defense ministry has chinese warships and aircraft are still operating around the island. a day after beijing declared an end to war games, the u opposes any attempt to break taiwan status quo. and years after being given the right to live and work in south africa, thousands of bob williams await a court ruling on whether they'll be forced to leave ah on pablo foley as welcome to the program, french president, demand you on my call is on a state visit to the netherlands. i made the controversy over comments he made in recent days regarding taiwan. my call made no mention of the taiwan issue in a much anticipated speech in the hague, which was briefly interrupted by protesters. instead, he focused on his belief that europe must embrace
7:02 pm
a new economic model to secure its sovereignty. right, well that's sad. take a listen to some of what my court said in that speech. defending sovereignty doesn't mean to shy away from all lies. it means that we must be able to choose our partners and shape our own destiny. rather than being, i would say, a mere witness of the dramatic evolution of his word. this means that we must strive to be a rule makers, prisons on the whole diggers, and this we can do it in a cooperative manner in keeping with her aspirate of openness and thought nation. well, earlier i spoke to dw correspondent in brussels, jack barrack and asked him what the key takeaways were from my con speech. well, i think what everyone was looking out for was comments on taiwan after he'd said on the end of his beijing trip that europe shouldn't follow. be followers of america on that issue. china is obviously not ruled. i read taking taiwan by force,
7:03 pm
the closest we got to a comment on that was he said we want allies, but we want to be able to choose them. but even in the questions afterwards, unfortunately for us, perhaps this wasn't a press conference. this was a lecture at a university, so that weren't too many pointing questions to ask him exactly what he meant by that and whether he stands by instead, this was a platform which he used to outline his, his priorities as a european leader, which are things like building the capital markets union, which would allow money to flow around the european union more quickly and more easily. also an industrial policy to try and get europe to make its own stuff, especially related to the green transition. these are policies that he's had there for a long time. these are things that he supported is even campaigned on these issues . but what we're seeing at the moment, especially over the last couple of weeks, is really emboldened president my crohn. he is speaking i powerfully,
7:04 pm
he's really trying to push his agenda firstly on the international stage as we saw on his trip to beijing. but now i was speeches like this on the european stage. he's a 2nd time president and he has the possibility. i think this is what he feels to really push this idea of further european integration to as he said, as he mentioned in his comments to the press after that china trip to make europe the 3rd superpower of the world behind china in the united states. jack, you mentioned some of it there, and at one point he did say that he's a dreamer. ab, let's elaborate a little bit more on this idea that he has about europe there. or in the you being this 3rd superpower. can you tell us a little bit more about what he meant by that? exactly. yet he will enter the end of that speech. he went into a really interesting sort of reverie. i think it was, it was a real different tone where he talked about being a dreamer and wanting europe rationally to become the power that it can be. as i
7:05 pm
said he's, he's, this is the 2nd term president. so he is able to sort of watch lyrical a bit more by his priorities and his visions for europe. the problem is when he makes such comments related to, for instance, this issue in taiwan, where he said that, that europe shouldn't follow america. he gets kick back, we've seen republican senators specifically marco rubio who lost the chance to, to run an election to donald trump in 2016. and he said the okay, does micron speak for the whole of europe? and if he does, and he doesn't want to back us on the taiwan issue, then perhaps we should leave europe to deal with the ukraine conflicts on its own. so those comments become quite complex on that from a g, a lift, ju political perspective. and that's what we're seeing here, but having said that, he's already getting kate back from the americans. he's also getting kick back here in europe, where european politicians are concerned that micron is sort of going out there and making these broad statements without necessarily the backing of the rest of the

european union partners. and of course, let's not forget that a, it was interrupted by protesters in the beginning of that speech in the hague. unfortunately, i have at more time though, jack, thank sad for your analysis there. you know, the correspondence jack park in brussels. chinese state media says beijing is continuing to carry out what he calls combat training in the waters around taiwan. this comes despite china officially declaring an end to 3 days of intensive military drills on monday. the taiwanese president has accused china of creating instability in the region over the exercises. meanwhile, people on the streets of taipei. i've taken to poking fun at beijing. this is the latest show of taiwanese resistance to china's wargames. people are rushing to buy batches warned by air force pilots showing winnie the pooh being punched in the face by a taiwanese blackbear. i defy and message to china's leader she jam ping, who is often satirized for looking like the honey loving cartoon. bare china which

claims taiwan as part of its territory, has held 3 days of military drills around the island, including simulated attacks on the territory. the operation started one day after ty, once president returned from a brief visit to the united states, where she met you as how speaker kevin mccarthy. despite beatings warnings against it, i thought as she has since condemned china's actions or jean make war her body, you'll shine. i used the visit as a pretext to start these military drills, creating instability in the taiwan strait. this is not the responsible attitude of a major nation in this region who ne, bellwether with her title on the street of taipei, life goes on. people are focused on a piece for future, joseph jordan's,

on or should be avoided at all costs if it can be avoided. we finally have a sense of peaceful life and we really cherish it. they only go hooking their show . in china, people seem divided over their government actions. or did you, does i think 3 days of drills may not be enough? well, i think we should keep showing china's capabilities, even under normal circumstances. notice is elma dog walk and leave a homely of when we cannot be too ruthless that we have to show a point of view, but only to a certain point, obama. good, i think their military drills. sure enough for now be jing conducted similar large scale military exercises around taiwan in august last year. after then you as how speaker nancy pelosi visited the island, concludes the ceremony. let's take a look out some of the other stories making headlines around the world. turkish
