about life, the universe and the rest of that were series. 40 to the answer. almost every thing this week on t w ah ah, this is date of use life from berlin, french president, a manion of my call, lays out his vision for europe. during a state visit to the netherlands, my caught emphasizes economic reform. the french leader made no mention of the controversy he created with his comments on taiwan over the weekend. also coming up,
8:01 pm
ty ron's defense ministry, says chinese warships and aircraft are still operating around the island a day after beijing declared an end to war games. you opposes any attempt to break taiwan status quo. ah, i'm pablo for las welcome to the program. french president manju out of my call is on a state visit to the netherlands amid controversy over comments he made in recent days regarding taiwan, my call made no mention of the taiwan issue in a much anticipated speech in the hague, which was briefly interrupted by protesters instead, he focused on his belief that europe must embrace a new economic model to secure its sovereignty. let's take a list now to some of what my call said in that speech. defending sovereignty

doesn't mean to shy away from all lies. it means that we must be able to choose our partners and shape our own destiny. rather than being, i would say, a mere witness of the dramatic evolution of his word. this means that we must strive to be a rule maker's reasons on the whole. take us and this we can do it in a cooperative manner in keeping with her asked for it of openness and partnership. well, earlier i spoke to d, w. jack park and brussels and asked them what the key takeaways were from my con speech. well, i think what everyone was looking out for was comments on taiwan after he'd said on the end of his beijing trip that europe shouldn't follow. be followers of america on that issue. china is obviously not ruled. i read taking taiwan by force, the closest we got to comment on that was he said, we want allies, but we want to be able to choose them. but even in the questions afterwards,
8:03 pm
unfortunately for us, perhaps this wasn't a press conference. this was a lecture at a university, so there weren't too many pointing questions to ask him exactly what he meant by that, and whether he stands by instead, this was a platform which he used to outline his, his priorities as a european leader, which are things like building the capital markets union, which would allow money to flow around the european union more quickly and more easily. also an industrial policy to try and get europe to make its own stuff, especially related to the green transition. these are policies that he's had there for a long time. these are things that he supported is even campaigned on these issues . but what we're seeing at the moment, especially over the last couple of weeks, is really emboldened president micron. he is speaking a powerfully, he's really trying to push his agenda firstly on the international stage as we saw on his trip to beijing. but now i was speeches like this on the european stage. he's a 2nd term president,
8:04 pm
and he has the possibility. i think this is what he feels to really push this idea of further european integration to as he said, as he mentioned in his comments to the press after that china trip to make europe the 3rd superpower of the world behind china in the united states. jack, you mentioned some of it there and at one point he did say that he's a dreamer. ab, let's elaborate a little bit more on this idea that he has about euro player or in the you being this 3rd super power. can you tell us a little bit more about what he meant by that? exactly. yet he will into the end of that speech, he went into a really interesting sort of reverie. i think it was, it was a really different tone where he talked about being a dreamer and wanting europe rationally to become the power that it can be. as i said he's, he's, this is the 2nd term president. so he is able to sort of watch lyrical a bit more by his priorities and his visions for europe. the problem is when he

make such comments related to, for instance, this issue in taiwan, where he said that, that europe shouldn't follow america. he gets kick back, we've seen republican senators specifically marco rubio who lost the chance to, to run an election to donald trump in 2016. and he said the okay, does micron speak for the whole of europe? and if he does, and he doesn't want to back us on the taiwan issue, then perhaps we should leave europe to deal with the ukraine conflict on its own. so those comments become quite complex on that from a g, a lift, ju political perspective. and that's what we're seeing here, but having said that, he's already getting kate back from the americans. he's also getting kick back here in europe, where european politicians are concerned that micron is sort of going out there and making these broad statements without necessarily the backing of the rest of the european union partners. and of course, let's not forget that a, it was interrupted by protesters in the beginning of that, that speech in the hague. unfortunately, i have at more time though, jack,

thank sad for your analysis there. you know, the correspondence jack park in brussels, chinese state media says beijing is continuing to carry out what he calls combat training in the waters around taiwan. this comes despite china officially declaring an end to 3 days of intensive military drills on monday. the taiwanese president is accused china of creating instability in the region over the exercises. meanwhile, people on the streets of ty pay have taken to poking fun at beijing. this is the latest show of taiwanese resistance to china's wargames. people are rushing to buy batches warned by air force pilots showing winnie the pooh being punched in the face by a taiwanese blackbear, a defiant message to china's leader, she jam ping, who has often satirized for looking like the honey loving cartoon. bare china, which claims taiwan as part of its territory, has help 3 days of military drills around the island,
8:07 pm
including simulated attacks on the territory. the operation started one day after ty, once president returned from a brief visit to the united states, where she met you as how speaker kevin mccarthy. despite beings warnings against it, i taught us that she has since condemned china's actions gorgine make war. her body will shine, i used the visit as a pretext to start these military drills, creating instability and the taiwan strait. this is not the responsible attitude of a major nation in this region who made that border with her title. on the street of taipei, life goes on. people are focused on a piece for future. joseph jordan's and the whole should be avoided at all costs if it can be avoided. we finally have a sense of peaceful life and we really cherish it. they only go hooking their show

in china. people seem divided over their government actions. or did you does i think 3 days of drills may not be enough. i think we should keep showing china's capabilities, even under normal circumstances. notice is elma dog or more than likely, which is allergic to the whole me of when we cannot be too ruthless, we have to show a point of view, but only to a certain point to obama. did i think their military drills surely enough for now? be jing conducted similar large scale military exercises around taiwan in august last year after then you as how speaker nancy pelosi visited the island, concludes the ceremony. now one month before voters had to the pose and turkey president, russia tie up early. one has kicked off his election campaign with the raleigh in ankara, speaking in front of 40 times. and supporters are one pledge to reign in inflation and boost economic growth. rampant inflation has eroded support for the president

and his ha party were facing their toughest challenge since coming to power in 2002 turkeys. also still recovering from a massive earthquake of earthquakes in fabric that claimed thousands of lives and cost billions that were near. i spoke to tito view, turkey correspondent, julia hand in the stumble, and i asked her what that is, what we can expect from next month's elections. well, there will be a parliamentary and a presidential vote, and these elections are considered to be the most consequential ones in recent history. here in turkey, more than 60000000 people are eligible to vote, and they will decide whether to keep the current government, which has been in power for more than 2 decades or opt instead for a change of leadership in ankara for president ridge of ty, a bad one, as you mentioned, this is going to be the toughest challenge of his political career. he has been

trailing in opinion polls mostly because of the ongoing economic crisis here in the country. and his critics, the opposition, are accusing him of having let turkey into authoritarianism by extending his grip on state institutions controlling the judiciary, jailing political foes and silencing critical media. so the may elections here in turkey will not only determine whether ad one and his islamic rooted aka p can extend their rule into a 3rd decade. they will also decide how turkey is governed, where the economy is headed and how the country's international relations with allies and partners, particularly in the west are going to look like. are you, you touched on a few, the issues there? of course, the voters are plenty of issues that i'm sure that they want dealt with. you've been speaking to people. can you tell us a little bit more about what the most pressing issues are? the ones that stood out for you were well from the ailing economy and the cost of

living crisis to democratic right? the rule of law migration policies, there is actually a wide range of issues at stake, but many problems here in the country have been exacerbated by the devastating earthquakes in southeast, in turkey, in february, which have killed more than 50000 people and devastated the entire towns and, and cities, i'm actually, i'm president edwin's government faced blistering criticism of their handling of their bad handling of this crisis. and now one of the, the main election prom promises of president edwin is as he phrases it, to heal the wounds of the people and to rebuild the region. he has promised hundreds of thousands of new homes within just one year. and among his support, he sees certainly seen as a man of action as somebody who can get this job done. but we just got back from id,

among one of the provinces worst hit by the quakes. actually a strong hold of the president and his a k p. and i've been asking people there what they think are they actually believing in this promise? here is what they told me you're the boys will be there, you'll be severe. but how can you build that many houses and just one year we can't even clear the rubble in a year. any one can come and see that 60 percent of the rubble is still piling up here in abbey. a man of the smallest got one over. they are new. rumor was one of the you know we have to believe in our president. i hope he'll do it. there's no of a solution. every want to stay intense. everyone psychology is broken. yes and do the animals lou. mulky apologize. so we will definitely rebuild this place. we'll probably have to do it ourselves. the government isn't doing anything. ship gun. oh, they up don't fall, they say they will do it, but we don't believe it. it will take at least 2 to 3 years to build those houses,

letting up almost the end of what i was going to do until the are we going to live in 10. so that time i noticed is notice to let them go to the stricter. so plenty of despair there weeks after the earthquake, celia. so tell us what's the opposition's plan to beat president out of the i'm in the elections will this time actually out on faces? an unusually united opposition. 6 opposition parties ranging in ideology from social democratic to right wing, secular to islam is have gathered behind one single candidate came on college all and among the challengers in the presidential race, he's seen as the one with the best chances to beat president ad 1 am me, chemical has shown was a 74 year old former bureaucrats, someone who is so consider to leg cory's mob, but has a reputation of integrity. and according to recent polls, it's going to be

a tough contest. some polls the even see mr. kalak, kill it all ahead of mr. add one. now the opposition block. he stands for the so called nation alliance, woes $2.00 and $1.00 men rule and turkey and restore turkish democracy. they have, as i mentioned, a very diverse interest, but they are united by one common goal, and this is to oust add one. but then again, this is turkey and a lot can happen in the coming weeks leading up to this historic election. if no candidate gets at least 50 percent of the vote in the 1st round, there is going to be as 2nd round, a row not run off between the 2. a top candidates at the end of may and will be keeping an eye in at dw zullie a hand in his double. thank you. here's a reminder of the top story we're following for you this, our french president, the minute of my call has laid out his vision for the future of europe, while on an official to day visit to the netherlands. becomes a made controversy,
