i kind of like a superpower. there were series. 42, the answers almost everything. this week on d. w. ah, ah, ah, this is deed of the news live from berlin. china plans a no fly zone. north of taiwan. tensions are high after recent chinese military drills in the region will bring you the latest from our cars fund and also on the program. joe biden arrives in dublin after a visit to belfast to mark 25 years of peace in northern ireland and to

nasa and veils it's mar simulator. volunteers were leaving the facility for a year to test what life would be like for future missions to per ah unpopular foliage. welcome to the program. china is planning to close air space north of taiwan later this week. as beijing turns up, the heat on its neighbor. taiwan says china has notified it that a no fly zone will be imposed for half an hour on april 16th. china has ended 3 days of military drills around taiwan following a trip to the west by the islands. president sy, in when the chinese president choosing pink, has raised the stakes by calling on china's military to train for quote, actual combat. well, the don't use china expert clifford turnin is here with me in studio and has been
7:02 pm
following this story closely. clifford great to see. so actual combat now, is this a power move or do you think beijing is actually planning an attack? i think it's a power move. i mean it's, it's scary language. it's designed to, to unsettled people. it's designed to, to frighten people. i don't think she didn't pin is going to invade taiwan unless he's confident that he'll win. and i think in the absence of an assured victory, which i don't get is assured, he's not going to do it. but what i think the chinese have learned recently is that they can do a lot with their wallets. they can do a lot with their ability to convince other people in different parts of the world that they need china's money more than they need to, to stand behind taiwan. so i think what we're seeing is a lot of very tough rhetoric. we've seen these drills, i mean they've entered the drills, but they're still there. the ships are still surrounding the island. so i think power move is probably the best way to describe it. now, clifford tell us more about this 30 minutes. air space closure because it was
7:03 pm
originally meant to be longer, right? that's what i was originally supposed to be 3 days and which the taiwanese were horrified because this is one of the busiest areas of air traffic in the world. and they were very, very, obviously, very disturbed by this was also going to affect other countries such as korea. and everyone thinks it's related to some sort of satellite launch. the taiwanese protested very vociferously about this, and they reduce that to 27 minute window on sunday. so i think there the plan is to basically em, if they've got it back. but at the same time it's, it's more of the saber rattling more of this. escalating pressures and you know, it's not a good, it's not a good indication of how things are in the straits in taiwan. let's talk a little bit a bit now about economic matters because china is launched an investigation into taiwan trade restrictions on chinese products. what's all it? what's this bagged? well, basically again,
7:04 pm
this is another power move. what they're talking about. they're trying to stop dumping the same, the taiwanese, they're selling things that are too cheap into the mainland market. and they've done these before. but this is the 1st time they done 2455 items, which is quite lost. so this is the 1st time they've done that many. and i think again it's, it's, it's part of this trying to show that china has the economic muscle to take on taiwan. they're trying to show taiwan how much it needs the mainland because trade links are very, very strong between the 2. despite the political tensions. so i think it's very much connected to that whole picture. so considering everything we've just been talking about is china tightening. it's great that i think so. i mean, it's been a strange week for the taiwanese, they have, we had mccall, emmanuel, nicole, the french president visiting china in which he said that he didn't want france to be drawn into a crisis driven by american rhythm on a chinese overreaction. and i think the chinese are quite surprised by this. the
7:05 pm
americans are quite annoyed by this. and so for the taiwanese, they feel in some way that they're not, they don't quite up maybe the support they, they might have expected from europe, from within europe. now some of that's been rolled back since, but definitely tensions are heightening and there's a much more confused picture. now, in terms of the alliances about who's backing taiwan, how far people are prepared to go to back taiwan. and this is something all the see, the china has been very careful, very keen to orchestrate from the beginning. so all in all, i think it's, it's not, it's been a poor weak for taiwan in terms of how it feels about its security on its options. going forward. thanks, clifford clifford kuhn and dw china expert us president joe biden has begun a visit to the republic of ireland. arden's prime minister leo veronica greeted biden at the start of a 3 day trip earlier in belfast bite and cold for political compromise in northern

ireland. he was in northern ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the good friday agreement, which ended decades of civil conflict. dividends apiece or old? well, d w correspondent, rosie bert charge, told me more about watch. oh, by not to say in belfast for president biden. spend a lot of that speech really talking about the gains if the good friday agreement that is this landmark peace accord from 1998 that put an end to decades of sectarian conflict and violence here in northern ireland that claimed thousands of lives and everybody i've spoken to here in belfast, no matter what site of this really just divide. they fall on a said that the good friday agreement is something which should be celebrated and that there are people alive here in northern ireland that may not have been otherwise had that deadly violence continued. so biden really paying tribute to those. he said that have been working to maintain that peace. he said peace was not

inevitable. and of course, he talked a lot about prosperity in northern ireland as well. he talked about potential for investment in the reach, and he talked about unleashing potential. this visit, however, is seen as somewhat bitter sweet because despite the fact that peace has endured across this quarter century, some of the institutions which are laid out in the good friday agreement, the belfast good friday agreement. well, they are simply not functioning properly and that is down to a political stalemate here in belfast. that's right. the, her power sharing executive of course, has been deadlocked for a while. let's say, is there any chance that by and visit will help to am backed deadlock? will president biden chose his words very carefully. pablo, he said he hopes that parish airing will be restored, but he was careful not to sound like he was pressuring or bullying any one. i was able to speak to the leader of the democratic unionist party,

7:09 pm
this visit has been hailed is important, but it was so short, less than 24 hours that shorter than some had hoped. or some had expected on that season as perhaps a reflection of the fact of this political situation is still so complex here across the border, aiden, the public of ireland. well, sir, there will be much of likely, much more smooth sailing. president biden will be visiting towns where his ancestors once lived, he will be ringing a p spell. he will be holding talked with the president of ireland aunt with the prime minister of ireland, and he will making a speech to the irish parliament. he will also be making a speech in bali, nar, which is the time where his ancestors once lived, he was making that outside a cathedral. so all sorts of nostalgic messaging expected there and plenty of expected also and talks of friendship between ireland and the united states. so all together know that he's crossed the border into arlen. you can expect much more talk of friendship, much more ease up as opposed to here in belfast where the message was. one of hope
