ah ah ah ah, this is the w news live from berlin tonight in the us, the f. b i has arrested the suspect alleged to be at the center of a massive intelligence leak. us investigator say a 21 year old air national guardsman is now in custody. he's believed to have shared classified documents connected to us spying and to the war in ukraine,
9:01 pm
also coming up tonight, more fighter jets for ukraine. germany approves poland request to deliver soviet era warplanes to bolster keith's defense forces. and if you will give the poor attempted irish tom, i shall warrior i'm at home for the dubai addresses. the irish parliament hailing the closest bonds between the 2 countries. ah, i'm burn golf is good to have you with us. we begin with breaking news from the united states where the f b, i has made an arrest over the leak of classified documents connected to the war in ukraine. federal agents have named a 21 year old member of the massachusetts air national guard,
9:02 pm
his name at jack tech zera. he was arrested as armed agents began searching his home earlier today. the lead documents allegedly reveal details on us spying and give information top secret information about western at special forces operating inside ukraine. the u. s. attorney general merit garland spoke about the ref just a few moments ago. today the justice department arrested jack douglas to shera in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information to share it is an employee of the united states air force national guard f. b i. agents took to share into custody earlier this afternoon. without incident. he will have an initial appearance at the us district court for the district of massachusetts. i want to thank the f b. i. justice department, prosecutors and our colleagues at the department of defense for their diligent work on this case. this investigation is ongoing. we will share more information at the
9:03 pm
appropriate time. thanks everyone. this is a quickly moving story. let's go now to washington d. c. our corresponded amid as if he has been following the story for us. i mean it's good to see you. so what more do we know about one jack? to share? hi brent. that's right. he's a 21 year old member of the air national guard of massachusetts. he was part of the intelligence wing of the air national guard there. now if you don't know the air national guard as part of the air force and he was an airman, which is the 2nd lowest rank of that branch of the military. so not a high ranking officer. he's also only 21 years old. and the says a lot about him because he was a member of an online gaming community. he was the leader of a group of about 20 to 30 young men. now this was all revealed by the washington post and the new york times, who spoke to members of that online gaming group. now what's interesting here is
9:04 pm
that he was the oldest member. so he was seen as kind of an uncle figure, a father figure. some of them said 21 years old, but allegedly bringing some of these top secret documents from his job at the air national guard and posting them on this channel for gamers. now he was do not know about the ideological reasons for posting these. this was a right leaning group of young men. they were gun enthusiasts. they call themselves christians, they prayed together. so this sheds a lot of light on his character and he's a legend suspect. this is all been reported by the new york times in the washington post and the f. b. i has confirmed that they've made an arrest that they've arrested this young man. but besides that, we don't know that much more about him. i mean, are we getting any information about how these documents, obviously classified documents, top secret information,
9:05 pm
how it would have been able, how he or anyone would have been able to remove it from a government facility as easily as a apparently is the cation in this case, this is a very interesting question here. one of the most important questions, because these top secret documents seem to have been easily taken by this young man . what we know about it is that he posted pictures of print out of these documents . now it's not clear if he printed these out on a home computer after taking them out digitally, or if he printed them at his workplace. now all top secret documents cannot be just printed out on a work computer without any trace. if they were printed out at the air national guard, then there's likely a trail of who printed them out. and this could be something at the f. b, i is looking into the department of justice when they're making a case against the young man who was arrested today. they will look at whether or not he was the one who printed out these documents. the new york times also noted
9:06 pm
that the photographs have details in the background. the photographs that he posted on the chat room have details in the background that show that it was probably taken at a residence, his private residence. these were folded in for so it looks like he might have printed them out at work, then folded the paper up and smuggled them out that way. but a lot of people are asking the question, how 21 year old would you have access to these documents? and if he did, how he could so easily remove so many documents and easily post them online. this is a very big question that still remains an answer tonight. and you know, what we've heard is that these documents were online for weeks before it ever became public. is it possible to measure to quantify the fall out of a breach the size it's not possible to quantify at
9:07 pm
this point, especially because we don't know what's yet to come. now these documents have been circulating online. we don't know if there's more out there that haven't been brought to light by the media. but so far what we have seen has been disruptive, politically. we've had cases where the u. s. has been exposed as spying on allies, including ukraine. now they're, they the u. s appears to be deep inside the russian military and knows the stockpiles of weapons there, but also knows the stockpiles of weapons and ukraine. despite the fact this intelligence was not given over to the united states. so there seems to be some spying going on there. the so this could have political ramifications. but i would say that at this point, this is not at the level of edward snowden leaks, for example, that it has both an entire arm of us intelligence and caused a very long and drawn out conversation the united states. so this does not, because it's not politically or ideological motivated. perhaps it is isolated right
9:08 pm
now, and biden confirmed that saying that he doesn't believe this is going to be a big problem going forward. you'd never use me an answer for the latest from washington army and thank you for germany has approved a polish request to deliver old mig fighter jets to ukraine. poland both the former east, german aircraft back in 2002, but needed permission from berlin to send them on to a 3rd country. germany is not planning to send any of its own fighter jets to ukraine. with me here at the big table now is gustavo grosso. he is a senior policy fellow with the european council on foreign relations. mr. greg, it's good to see. we've spoken many times. i want to talk about these make fighters in just a moment, but let me ask you about this data leak in the united states. there's, there's a lot of reporting that it reveals classified sensitive information about what's going on inside ukraine, or how worried are you?
9:09 pm
well, a lot of these are actually about the russian on forces that they didn't reveal all too much about ukrainian on forces. their post a 1000 critical slides about ammunition. still pause on when the might run out that mike, if russian is a q, how to conduct a war against ukraine, but otherwise the slides would not provide a detailed, sort of basis for, for operational planning for the russian general. so you don't see that you created military's ability to defend itself and to fight against the russian forces. deteriorated at all. not on the old, but not so much. i don't think it will have a big impact. it's embarrassing for the united states. i think it has destroyed all of trust because this sensitive information has steered to our controversies with ally. it has probably revealed some details about how do you, americans can penetrate russian information systems, military information systems,
9:10 pm
communication, all the russian, military, intelligence, etc. that might provide proof trouble, some on the way ahead because i guess the russians will start to adjust the way of communication. and these precise information is how you train a lot in the war, but probably changes. we'll see that over the summer by the russians kind of a thought. let me ask you about these make fighters and what does this decision by berlin? what does it mean for the war? well, the ukrainian air force is struggling with aircraft. all these mean 29 fight as they are interceptors, as a priority. fight to. so yeah, good to keep the russian air force away from ukraine. space. they're good for intercepting truth massage, drones cetera. ukraine has operated make 29 fighters in the past. so they're, they're familiar with the type they have some industry in place, unfortunately attacked by the russians, but still technicians that can service it. all, that is fine, but they have lost quite
9:11 pm
a quantity of that so they will replenish it. the problem with the make 29 is the ammunition of the me size the west has and also that ukraine have. the russians have more than me size in that regard that have twice the range of the ukrainian actually i me size. and while you train in asked for, i'm miss, i was predominantly r. c. me active for a to homing. so you need to illuminate the d enemy aircraft all the way of the engagement process by russian missiles are fine. forget and that that gives the russian some edge that's why ukrainians want f sixteens. you know, there's been a lot of talk about how germany was dragging its feet when it came to the, the issue of sending battle tanks to ukraine with these fighter jets. it seems like the decision was made quickly, was made within a day than a day so. so i mean, what, what's changed? well 1st of all, german politics has evolved all these childish debates that we had. i kind of still can remember on the outbreak of the war, there was a debate about mine, old german,
9:12 pm
foreign g d r, how it will type that, you know, it became a state affair cetera. but these days are gone. the 2nd thing is we have a new defense minister, actually he before the government as such because you have 5 different ministries that need to have a positive opinion about that before any common decision was made said, we'll gonna have a decision by today of course, putting pressure on the rest of the government to really come out with a decision during the day. so he's really personally engaged in providing a train with arms and equipment. and that also is something that was lacking, especially in the ministry of defense for, for the past year. mr groves was good to have you here in the studio. we appreciate you taking the time to valuable context here with a story that's also developing quickly. thank you. thank you very much. or let's take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world . the 2nd law maker expelled from the tennessee state house in the united states
9:13 pm
has been reinstated justin pearson was expelled for taking part in a gun control protest inside the chamber, days after a mass shooting in nashville. he and another black legislator were voted out by the republican controlled body, french unions or staging another nationwide strike to protest president microns pension reform plants. there have been some skirmishes with police. a court is set to rule on the legality of the changes to morrow. the government wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. north korea has fired its 1st intercontinental ballistic missile in the month. the watch triggered a scare in northern japan where residents were told to take cover. the missile flew 1000 kilometers before landing at sea. south korea's military has called the move a grave provocation. all as tensions flare around
9:14 pm
taiwan, germany is foreign minister on a lena bear block has said that berlin is working with its allies to prevent further escalation. bareback has begun a 3 day visit to china, where she will hold talks with senior diplomats. and she's warned, a regional crisis good have far reaching consequences for the world. china has raised tensions by staging 3 days of war games around taiwan and saying that it will temporarily close air and sea space. gearbox says that it is vital to ease tensions in the region. i know military and, and military escalation in the taiwan strait when, as i said, 50 percent of economic deliveries go 3, that would be a worst case scenario worldwide. but especially for us as one of the largest industrialized nations in the scene, that's the one that's bigger than that is why we are working with other partners here in the region, but also with other patton as well,
9:15 pm
wide to reduce the tensions in this region. then to prevent it from escalation further because it's in our own economic interest eigen whichever isn't in texas. oh, i'm joined now by tim really gave senior research fellow at the derby council on foreign relations. mr. early is good to have you. where this burbock is just the latest big name from europe visiting china. this week it's bare bark. is, is this being coordinated? are we seeing european powers working in concert to impact the decision making of beijing? well, this was really planned to be such a european sign. the idea was to have my call and european commission president on the line going together and shortly followed by a, the german foreign minister with the representative of foreign affairs of the you,
9:16 pm
joseph, or mister burrell. and food should be got to call it, so he wasn't and he was unable to travel. but the real disaster is that one deadline and friends president emanuel, my phone, had very different takes on china. so in the end, what we are faced with is that your doesn't look as one is not standing in unity, but it's sending extreme the different signals to beijing. the question is now of course, how is the german foreign minister wanting to position germany in all this? and what do you think she's going to say that will differ from what we heard from the french president last week? i think that i missed a book will certainly make clear, as she said, also in her statement today that europe is deeply concerned about east asian security, including the question of taiwan. she will also, i think,
9:17 pm
be very clear that we as europeans in mont, from china, not to deliver any weapons, not deliver ammunition of significant scale to russia. and here i think she is very clear in the differences that exist in the perception in the interest between china and europe. and also in contrast to my call, she sees as economic interest of europe de risk game and not for the deepening trade ties between europe. and china, that's precisely what the french president it, let me ask you too about the situation around tie one there. there's been a lot of reports that china is escalating the situation with these military exercises. a no fly zone that's been declared for, for this month. only, of course, for a very limited amount of time. nonetheless, this is what china is doing. how much should we be reading into this?
9:18 pm
what's a very forceful and significant signal. it's really a show of force, white people to variation army off china. we should take this very serious in such cases, such shows a force can really derail and really create an escalation of the prices in the taiwan strait. we possibly massive consequences for the economy, but also for east asian security with the potential of a clash between the united states and china. so this is really significant at the same time, we should also notice that the military gains, the military information that trying to stay out of this is also limited because china is really not doing proper drills here. it's not stimulating any counter force from taiwan. it's it, this is a show of force. it's not a proper drill. me to ask you to look into your crystal ball. do you see any high
9:19 pm
level diplomats from the united states visiting beijing in the near future? well, the us president of the u. s. foreign minister, mr. lincoln was set to visit china before the crisis around the us shooting down. that's why balloon or the united states. i suspect that the from china took place at that time mister blinking, cancelled his trip by now to our information. it is the u. s sites trying to rearrange high level meetings between the us and china. and apparently what we are seeing is that china has lost confidence that there is quite chances of improving the relations with the united states significantly. so one, now it seems that it's rather the chinese site that is blocking that, but we will certainly see a resumption of these talks. but it seems more that the chinese are not so eager to
9:20 pm
help them. so so, so jim ruling with the german council on foreign relations. mister, really, we appreciate your time and your insights tonight. thank you. thank you so much. you as president joe biden has addressed the irish parliament in dublin, he held the relationship between the 2 countries. as a partnership for the ages president was warmly received has been warmly received on this trip. he spoke proudly of his irish ancestry. he also praised ireland support for ukraine. this is the 3rd day of his visit to the island of ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the good friday peace agreement arrived little more than during his speech. mister biden touched on some of the more person who lived in thought their grandchild. their great, great grandsons would both be present. i think as really a little bit of irish malarkey
9:21 pm
w's rosie burkhart. she has more now from dublin bite in speech. here at the irish parliament sounded like a real love letter to ireland. very personal speech drawing on his own family's history of leaving ireland in 18. hundreds, during the famine in what he called coffin ships so cold because so he people died making that journey. he talked about those intertwining histories of ireland and the united states. and he said, we irish talking about our history. really identifying himself within this community here, and of course, president biden is not the only u. s. it is in to have some sort of irish ancestry. in fact, there, around 33000000 americans who claim some sort of irish heritage in. of course, that means quite a lot of voters and something that while a present biden's heart was clearly here in ireland. clearly a very personal speech here. his heart in the room here at the parlin. well,
9:22 pm
at least one of his eyes may have been looking across the atlantic at irish american voters, because we know this is the president who may be thinking about a potential a re run, owed bid for a re election in the united states. now, president biden also talks about the ongoing war in ukraine. he said there is a competition waiting just now in the world between autocracy and democracy. no, ireland is no sort of big, big military power. quite on the contrary, it is militarily neutral. that means it's not part of western military alliance, nato, and that is been only sending non lethal aid to ukraine. but on that point, seemed to me like his speaking points were almost written by the irish department of foreign affairs. because he praised ireland for sending that non lethal aid, and he also praised ireland for taking in around $80000.00 ukrainian refugees. no, president biden will now go on to one of his ancestral home towns here in ireland, in 18, ballina where he will deliver another speech outside a cust of a cathedral for which one of his ancestors supplied the brick. so another look back
9:23 pm
at that heritage and he says this ship between island in the united states is one for the eighty's. there was the w's rosie birch hard. they're reporting from dublin sports. these now by munich have suspended attack her son jamante for one game following an alleged altercation with teammate the royce on a after this week's champions league defeat to manchester city. germany's paper billed is reporting that money hit sunny in the face after the game. by and said they had suspended and find the senegalese star for misconduct. they'll now miss byron's home match against hoffen heim on saturday with champions locked in a close title race with russia door to thailand, now home of white, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. it's an enticing setting for travelers, but since the pandemic that the breaks from tourism, some other visitors have made
9:24 pm
a comeback. for about 4 years, my abbe looked pretty much like this. mostly empty of people and a prime spot for black tip reef sharks. a 100 to a 160 a day in this quiet, sheltered coral reef cove. thai authorities had closed excess in 2018 to mitigate the effects of tourism. and then the pandemic hit, keeping people away even longer and allowing the sharks. they're obviously not the jaws variety to flourish. oh, so now what with what was called a limited reopening in 2022. limited as in $375.00 visitors per hour. and no one allowed in the water over their knees, plus no boats, docking in the bay project my a bay shark watch says the shark numbers are down by 3 quarters from their recent peak that's not unexpected and considered well, ok,
9:25 pm
we're hoping that we owe with the restriction in place, we can mitigate the disturbance on them. and now we're doing this research in hopes that we can find ah, the best way for tourism and the environment to coexist. yeah, the have to save it. if he wavered, let people go. so it will destroy it. definitely. so i really appreciate the, the way that the close the beats for the swimming. probably just because to save the nita barring another intervention, environmental stewards, no. this space will remain a tourist destination. but if the coral reef is now safe and $30.00 to $40.00 sharks still come here each day, it can still sort of be a win win each actually going to bring new ah tourism scheme as well. and are we going to benefit from that overall? so we don't talk about, you know,
9:26 pm
closing everywhere or reducing the tourism number that a thing me talking about, minutes in it wisely. as the tourist numbers to this famous beach hold to about 4000 a day. the resurgence of black chip reef sharks can continue because now there are at least several dozen a day to track and here's a reminder, the top stories that we're following for you this our, the f b i has arrested the man believe to be connected to a leak of classified us intelligence documents, the suspect has been named as jack picks. they are on a 21 year old member of the air national guard. he's believed to have shared documents online revealing sensitive information about the war in ukraine and about us spying activities. germany has granted permission for poland to deliver old mig fighter jets to ukraine, poland all the former east, german jets back in 2002, and required berlin's permission to send them on to ukraine.
