now, like the universe of like a superpower, our series of 40 to the answers almost every thing this week on t w. ah, ah, ah, this is the w news live in from berlin tonight in the u. s. the api i has arrested the suspect alleged to be at the center of a massive intelligence, leap us investigator, se 21 year old air national guardsman is in custody. he's believe, to have shared classified documents connected to us spying and to the war in ukraine. also coming up tonight, more fighter jets for ukraine,
11:01 pm
germany approved holland's request to deliver soviet era warplanes to help bolster keeps defense forces. and if you will give the poor attempted irish tom i shall warrior i know for the dubai addresses. the irish parliament hailing the closed bonds between the 2 countries. ah, i'm bring. gov is good to have you with us. we begin now with news from the united states where the f b, i has arrested a suspect over the leak of classified documents connected to the war in ukraine. federal agents have named a 21 year old member of the massachusetts air national guard. jack texera was arrested as armed,
11:02 pm
began searching his home earlier today. the league documents allegedly reveal that western special forces have been inside ukraine operating there. and the documents also reveal us spying activities. now the u. s. attorney general mayor garland, he gave more details about the suspects arrest a couple of hours ago. today the justice department arrested jack douglas to shera in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information to share it is an employee of the united states air force national guard f. b i. agents took to share into custody earlier this afternoon. without incident. he will have an initial appearance at the us district court for the district of massachusetts. i want to thank the f b. i. justice department, prosecutors and our colleagues at the department of defense for their diligent work on this case. this investigation is ongoing. we will share more information at the

appropriate time. thanks everyone. my colleague, communist of he is following the story force in washington, and i asked him, what else we know about the suspect? well, as you pointed out, brand, he's very young, 21 years old. he was a member, he is a member of the air national guard of massachusetts. this is a branch of the air force as a reservist branch, and he was part of the intelligence wing there. so that's why he had access allegedly declassified documents. now he was also in his private life, the kind of leader of an online gaming chat room. and that was full of members of younger men than him if you can believe it, teenagers, many of them who shared a right wing, political leanings, a love of guns christianity. so this was definitely on the right side of the political spectrum. and he leaked the documents there,
11:04 pm
the allegedly and the new york times in a washington post spoke to members of that group who called him something of a father figure. and they made it very clear that he did not see himself as a whistleblower. these documents were meant to impress them or meant to enlighten them about world affairs, but they were not meant to leave their small corner of the internet as they put it . yeah, well, that is indeed not the case where that's not what happened. apparently we know that a lot has been discovered already by us media. what about federal investigators in the u. s. i mean, what have they said about this case? he's been charged with the unauthorized leaking of classified material that could carry a 10 year sentence for each of the charges. and we're talking about dozens of documents here that they are charging, that they will be charging him for. now what they haven't said is how he did this, that's what they're going to be investigating. the department of defense did say
11:05 pm
that a lot of this is based on trust. if you do background checks and you gain trust in this person, once they access classified documents, there's not that much you can do to prevent them from taking this out. now of course, he had photos of this. he could have also just told people, so there is no full proof method. but if we're talking about the photos here, it's interesting how such a low ranking member was able to smuggle out photographs of printed documents. now of course, that's going to leave a paper trail if he was the one who printed it out at his workplace, there's printers will show will trace it back to him. but of course that's only after the fact that doesn't prevent him from leaking those documents. so there's lots to be investigated here, brent, and what about the fallout from all of this? i mean, is it possible right now to measure the fall out and possibly measure the damage that has been done to us intelligence gathering?
11:06 pm
that's the biggest question. all of this, every time there's a major leak like this one wonders what is going to come out of it. we don't know if we've seen the end of these leak documents because they've been searching on circulating online for months and they've only surface because of wider attention from the media. now it has exposed a lot of it has exposed weaknesses and ukrainian military which will be useful for russia. it has exposed us spying on allies, including overhearing conversations of ukrainian officials without their permission exposed south korea. and israel is struggling to decide whether or not they want to send more weapons to ukraine, but all of this does not come as a big surprise to those have been falling. the stories closely just more a confirmation of pre existing suspicions w's. i mean, as with the latest from washington, i mean as always, thank you. germany has approved a polish request to deliver old mig fighter jets to ukraine. poland bought the
11:07 pm
former east german aircraft back in 2002 with a stipulation that it would need permission from the german government to send those aircraft onto a 3rd country. germany is not planning to send any of its own fighter jets to ukraine. d, w political correspondence, i mean young told me what germany's decision signals. it's about sending a clear message of solidarity to key and showing support for their efforts to defend themselves against the russian invasion. this decision by the berlin government was apparently made on the same day, or at least very soon after poland put in the request to send these megs to ukraine . and the german defense minister has said that that shows you could rely on germany at as part of the alliance of countries supporting ukraine.
11:08 pm
so just to recap, the reason why a decision from berlin was needed. these are make 29 soviet designs, plains which poland has a number of some of which came from germany originally when they went to poland in the early 2, thousands. the agreement was, was signed between berlin, a war so of berlin would have final say if they wanted, if the polls wanted to re export them. and that's what's happening here. and you know, they are not exactly the type of equipment that the government in kia would really like to have. they want to more state of the art jets. so they can ward off attacks of from the air. but these will be of some use because they all the kind of planes that can intersect foreign invading aircraft in the air. and they could make
11:09 pm
a significant difference in the ukranian war effort. it was d, w simon young, talking with me earlier as tensions flare around taiwan, germany's foreign minister under lena bear, bog has said that berlin is working with its allies to prevent further escalation. their book has begun to a 3 day visit to china, where she will hold talks with senior diplomats and she's warned. a regional crisis would have far reaching consequences for the world. china has raised tensions by staging, 3 days of war games around the island of taiwan and by saying that it will temporarily close the air space around the aisle. iraq says that it's vital to ease tensions in the region. what i know military and, and military escalation in the taiwan strait when, as i said, 50 percent of economic deliveries go through. that would be a worst case scenario worldwide. but especially for us as one of the largest industrialized nations in the scene. that's the one that's bigger than that is why
11:10 pm
we are working with other partners here in the region, but also with other partners well wide, to reduce the tensions in this region for him to prevent it from escalating further because it's in our own economic interest. i even which of digging into us is there was the german foreign minister there speaking earlier to day. you as president joe biden has held americans close ties with ireland in an address to its parliament. in dublin, he's on a 3 day trip to explore his irish roots. joe biden started his day with the irish head of state miko higgins, taking part in a tree planting ceremony. oh, and winning the p. spell in his irish heritage. never, far from his thoughts. to throw mar atlanta. ah, or it would be, ah,
11:11 pm
the bell commemorates the good friday agreement, which ended decades of sectarian violence in northern ireland. but for the most part, the u. s. president's trip has been a light hearted one. visiting his ancestral home towns and joining the prime minister to watch a youth group play the irish sport of commercial v. and we're very fortunate to have the u. s. president and u. s. administration that takes an active and if not daily, certainly weekly interest in irish affairs. we're one of only 200 countries in the world. and we're, we're very fortunate that sam were always high on the presence agenda. and under top of mind, or when he's dealing with european affairs, that special relationship was friends of mine for biden, when he addressed the irish parliament. my good friend, brock obama, is my good friend. his grandfather was a shoemaker like mine,
11:12 pm
sailed 5 weeks earlier from the same port, the idea they both sale for a new life and thought their grand shoulder. great, great grandsons would both be present. i think as really a little bit of irish malarkey with the u. s president hoping for a 2nd term in office. it's a message, it's sure to go down. well, with the 31000000 americans who claim irish ancestry, even if it was targeted as irish america at the vote for the upcoming election, it doesn't take away from the genuineness of the actual speech of the sentiments on the last day of his to a biden will meet some of his distant relatives, is it a catholic shrine and make a speech in his ancestral hometown of ballina? when he w is rosie bra charge,
11:13 pm
she has more now from dublin bite in speech. here at the irish parliament sounded like a real love letter to ireland, very personal speech drawing on his own family's history of leaving ireland in 18. hundreds during the famine in what he called coffin ships so cold because so he people died making that journey. he talked about those intertwining histories of ireland and the united states, and he said, we irish talking about our history, really identifying himself within this community here. and of course, president biden is not the only u. s. it is in to have some sort of irish ancestry. in fact there around 33000000 americans who claim some sort of irish heritage in. of course that means quite a lot of voters and something that while a present biden's heart was clearly here in ireland. clearly a very personal speech here, his heart in the room here at the pilot. well, at least one of his eyes may have been looking across the atlantic at irish

american voters. because we know this is the president who may be thinking about a potential a re run, owed bid for a re election in the united states. no, president biden also talks about the ongoing war in ukraine. he said there is a competition waiting just now in the world between autocracy and democracy. no, ireland is no sort of big military power. quite on the contrary, it is militarily neutral. that means it's not part of the western military alliance, nato, and that is been only sending non lethal aid to ukraine. but on that point, seemed to me like his speaking points were almost written by the irish department of foreign affairs. because he praised ireland for sending that non lethal late, and he also praised ireland for taking in around $80000.00 ukrainian refugees. no, president biden will now go on to one of his ancestral home towns here in ireland in ballina where he will deliver another speech outside a cust of a cathedral for which one of his ancestors supplied the brick. so another look back
11:15 pm
at that heritage and he says this partnership between ireland and the united states is one for the ages. there was dw rosie birch. are there reporting from dublin? you're watching dw news up next. stephen beardsley has your business news and an update on germany's plans to partially legalize cannabis. i'll see you tomorrow. with people in trucks injured when trying to flee the city center. more and more refugees are being turned away. families please on the reason for the critical illness with.
