1:03 am
as if for the latest. he joined me from washington, dc. i mean, what more can you tell us about the suspect at this point? well, 1st of all, nicole, he's very young, just 21 years old. probably just had his 1st legal drink of alcohol here in the u. s. i. he was an airman, at the intelligence wing of the massachusetts air national guard. that's a branch of the air force and out that is the 3rd lowest rein airmen. first class in the air for some very low ranking, and he was able to leak hundreds of pages of classified documents on to a channel on discord where he was somewhat of a leader on his, a gamer, and chat, chat, a group. and a lot of these people on the website that he was on were very young as well. surprisingly even younger than him, many of them teenagers, the new york times and the washing posts were able to talk to several of them. and
1:04 am
they said that they looked up to him as somewhat of a father figure. now and fellow members of that chapter we're talking about and that chakra were those documents 1st appeared claim he was not a whistleblower. so what's being said about his motive? right, this stressed in interviews to the media that he was not doing this to call attention of the attention of the wider public to the wrong doings of the state or anything like that. it was meant solely for their own eyes. they said that he posted these documents in their group without the intention of spreading one them not to let the documents leave that group. he said he wanted to enlighten them about world affairs, but there was also an element here of him wanting to impress them. so they said that he wasn't a whistleblower in that sense, and he was very afraid that once these documents started circulating outside of the chat group that he would get in trouble. which he now is very deep into. he was not a high ranking member of the national guard. he said there initially,
1:05 am
how was he able then to get his hands on top secret information? right, very low ranking and less d here, but he did have a security clearance. there were background checks on him before he was able to join the intelligence wing of the air force here, the air national guard. and anybody with this security clearance would probably have access to these daily intelligence briefings from the department of defense. now since this story has broken, the department of defense has limited taken steps to limit the number of people who have access to the daily press briefings. because they said today after his arrest, that it really is a matter of trust. once somebody has been vetted by the department of defense, works for them and has security clearance. there's a lot of things that they can do to discourage them from leaking, like raising the punishment and making it easy to find leakers, which in this case is probably his case. unfortunately for him. but they can't
1:06 am
prevent somebody from doing it if they really want to. so no matter what system they've developed, it's not full proof. they still have to trust the people they hire. this is for us authorities, not only very embarrassing, it's also potentially very dangerous, right? this is being talked about as the most damaging weeks thins. possibly. edward snowden, though far, what is the fall out? been so far, the fall has been largely diplomatic, affected us relations with other countries. it's exposed south korean. israel, for example, being very hesitant to send weapons to ukraine and also expose the cranium in the military as being, having weaknesses where we did not really know they had weaknesses. also intending to strike deep into the heart of russia, which was suspected, but not confirmed. it also said that there are around a 100 western special forces operating within ukraine, which was somewhat of an open secret, but we have confirmation of that are what appears to be confirmation. but i think
1:07 am
for me, one of the very interesting aspects of the story is the media's role. a lot of times whistleblowers like edward snowden are protected by the media because they're trying to expose the wrong doings of the state. that's not the case here. and the media actually played a different role here with the new york times heading to his home and knocking on the door just hours before the f b. i showed up and arrested him soon. glenn greenwald to help edward snowden with his leaks, he condemned to the new york times for actually a leading f b i to this leakers door w. i mean s, as in washington. thank you so much for that. moving on germany has approved a polish request to deliver old make fighter jets to ukraine. fallen bought the former east german aircraft in 2002, but needed permission from berlin to send them to a 3rd country or when he is not planning to send any of its own fighter jets to ukraine. and dw political correspondence,

i'm young has more on when germany's decision signal it's about sending a clear message of solidarity to key and showing support for their efforts to defend themselves against the russian invasion. this decision by the berlin government was apparently made on the same day, or at least very soon after poland put in the request to send these megs to ukraine . and the german defense minister has said that that shows you could rely on germany at as part of the alliance of countries supporting ukraine. so just to recap, the reason why a decision from berlin was needed. these are make 29 soviet designed plains, which poland has a number of some of which came from germany originally when they went to poland in the early 2, thousands, the agreement was,
1:09 am
was signed between berlin in warsaw of berlin. would have final say if they wanted, if the pose wanted to re export them. and that's what's happening here. and you know, they are not exactly the type of equipment that the government in kia would really like to have. they want to more state of the art jets, so they can ward off attacks of from the air. but these will be of some use because they all the kind of planes that can intersect foreign or invading aircraft in the air. and they could make a significant difference in the ukranian war effort. simon young reporting their president jo vine has hailed america's close ties with the ireland and an address to parliament in dublin, on his 3 day trip to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the good friday agreement . he said both countries were united in the conviction that better days lie ahead.

i'm tapped into his irish roots several times throughout the visit, even speaking gaelic to tell lawmakers that he was in fact home joe biden started his day with the irish head of state. michael higgins, taking part in a tree planting ceremony. oh, and ringing the p. spell with his irish heritage never far from his thoughts this roll margin or it would be good. the bow commemorates the good friday agreement, which ended decades of sectarian violence in northern ireland. but for the most part, the u. s. president's trip has been a light hearted one. visiting his ancestral home towns and

joining the prime minister to watch a youth group play the irish sport of commercial v. i'm. we're very fortunate to have the u. s. president and u. s. administration that takes an active and it's not daily, certainly weekly interest in irish affairs where one of only $200.00 countries in the world. and we're, we're very fortunate that we're always high on the presence agenda under top of mind when he's dealing with european affairs. that special relationship was front of mind for biden, when he addressed the irish parliament. my good friend, brock obama, is my good friend. his grandfather was a shoemaker like mine, sailed 5 weeks earlier from the same port. the idea they both sale for a new life and thought their ground shoulder great, great dread shuns. would both be president, i think is really a little bit of irish malarkey.

with the u. s. president hoping for a 2nd term in office. it's a message. it's sure to go down. whoa. with the $31000000.00 americans who claim irish ancestry even if it was targeted as irish america, the vote for the upcoming election. it just take away from the genuineness of the actual reach of sentiment. on the last day of his to her biden, will make some of his distant relatives visit a catholic shrine and make his speech in his ancestral home town of ballina to thailand. next tome of white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, the images are alluring to tourist and at my bank, o. p. p. island to sharks. during a years long break from human visitors at maya bay, a remarkable influx of black tip reef sharks occurred. so what has happened since the bay, which was made famous the world over as it became the backdrop for leonardo dicaprio
1:13 am
movie, the beach, reopened to tourist. well, here's a look for about 4 years, maya bay looked pretty much like this. mostly empty of people. and a prime spot for black tip reef sharks. a 100 to a 160 a day in this quiet, sheltered coral reef cove tie authorities had closed access in 2018 to mitigate the effects of tourism. and then the pandemic hit, keeping people away even longer and allowing the sharks. they're obviously not the jaws variety to flourish. oh, so now what with what was called a limited reopening in 2022. limited as in $375.00 visitors per hour. and no one allowed in the water over their knees, plus no boats, docking in the bay project my a bay shark watch says the shark numbers are down by 3 quarters from their recent

peak that's not unexpected and considered well, ok, we're hoping that we owe with the restriction in place, we can mitigate that service on them. and now we're doing this research in hopes that we can find out the best way for tourism and the environment to coexist. yeah, the have to save it. if he wavered, let people go. so it will destroy it. definitely. so i really appreciate the, the way that the close the beats for the swimming. probably just because to save the nita barring another intervention, environmental stewards, no. this space will remain a tourist destination. but if the coral reef is now safe and $30.00 to $40.00 sharks still come here each day, it can still sort of be a win win each actually going to bring new ah tourism scheme as well. and we're going to benefit from that overall. so we don't talk about,
1:15 am
you know, closing everywhere or reducing the tourism number, but i think me talking about minutes in it wisely as the tourist numbers to this famous beach hold to about 4000 a day. the research and a black chip reef. sharks can continue, because now there are at least several dozen a day to track coming up. thanks steven beardsley has business news and an update on germany's plans to partially legalize cannabis for more news. you can always head to our website at c, w dot com. thanks for watching. enjoying the view and come take a look at this. our tv highlights every week in your inbox, subscribe now. oh, that has to. what did you do before? i saved the channels from.
