it really is a minimum, i mean on to what i do. a true combating dealings starts april 29th on d, w o . a daily news long from berlin federal agents in the us arrest the suspect alleged to be at the center of a massive intelligence league. a 21 year old air national guardsman is in custody to be charged under the espionage act, is believed to have shared classified documents connected to us buying and the war

with members of a chat group. their subsequent posting on social media has exposed military details from the war in ukraine, and diplomatically embarrassed the realities, as he was asked in us, arrested by a team of federal agents. the suspect, an employee of the united states at false national guard, is accused of lee king, a tranche of classified documents led away from his home in massachusetts. hill now face the full weight of us justice. today the justice department arrested jack douglas to shera in connection with an investigation and to alleged unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information to share it is an

go get a minute about the ladies i'm concerned with looking contemporaneously, this is the boston cult house, where the allegedly cur, is set to appear on friday, but while the main suspect may being costed a dozen small documents, a mere explosive content may yet come to light. did away a correspondent. i'm in s as it is in washington dc, and he told us more about the suspect. well, 1st of all, nicole, he's very young, just 21 years old. probably just had his 1st legal drink of alcohol here in the u. s. i. he was an airman, at the intelligence wing of the massachusetts air national guard. that's a branch of the air force, and now that is the 3rd lowest rank airman 1st class in the air force,
3:05 am
some very low ranking. and he was able to leak hundreds of pages of classified documents on to a channel on discord where he was somewhat of a leader on his, a gamer, and chat and chat, a group. and a lot of these people on the website that he was on were very young as well. surprisingly even younger than him, many of them teenagers, the new york times and the washing posts were able to talk to several of them. they said that they looked up to him as somewhat of a father figure. now and fellow members of that chapter we're talking about and that chakra were those documents 1st appeared claim he was not a whistleblower. so what's being said about his mother? right, this stressed in interviews to the media that he was not doing this to call attention of the attention of the wider public to the wrong doings of the state or anything like that. it was meant solely for their own eyes. they said that he posted these documents in their group without the intention of spreading one them not to let the

documents leave that group. he said he wanted to enlighten them about world affairs, but there was also an element here of him wanting to impress them. so they said that he wasn't a whistleblower in that sense, and he was very afraid that once these documents started circulating outside of the chat group that he would get in trouble. which he now is very deep into. he was not a high ranking member of the national guard. you said it there initially. how was he able then to get his hands on top secret information? right. very low ranking enlistees here, but she did have a security clearance. there were background checks on him before he was able to join the intelligence wing of the air force here, the air national guard. and anybody with this security clearance would probably have access to these daily intelligence briefings from the department of defense. now since this story has broken, the department of defense has limited taken steps to limit the number of people
3:07 am
have access to its daily press briefings. because they said today after his arrest, that it really is a matter of trust. once somebody has been vetted by the department of defense, works for them and has security clearance. there's a lot of things that they can do to discourage them from leaking, like raising the punishment, making it easy to find leakers, which in this case is probably his case. unfortunately for him. but they can't prevent somebody from doing it if they really want to. so no matter what system they develop, it's not full proof. they still have to trust the people the hire. this is for us authorities, not only very embarrassing, it's also potentially very dangerous. right? isn't being talked about as the most damaging weeks since possibly, edward snowden. so far, what is the fall out? been so far, the fault has been largely diplomatic. it's affected us relations with other countries as exposed south korean. israel for example of being very hesitant to send weapons to ukraine and also it's exposed. ukrainian military is
3:08 am
being having weaknesses where we did not really know they had weaknesses. also attending to strike deep into the heart of russia, which was suspected but not confirmed. it also said that there are around a 100 western special forces operating within ukraine, which was somewhat of an open secret. but we have confirmation of that or what appears to be confirmation. but i think for me, one of the very interesting aspects of the story is the media's role. a lot of times whistleblowers like edward snowden are protected by the media because they're trying to expose the wrong doings of the state. that's not the case here. and the media actually played a different role here with the new york times heading to his home and knocking on the door just hours before the f b. i showed up and arrested him soon. glen greenwald to helped edward snowden with his leaks. he condemned to the new york times for actually a leading f b i to this leakers door. it i'll use, i mean, s,

as in washington. thank you so much for that. let's take a look now at some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. germany has given the green line for poland to send 5 soviet era fighter jets to ukraine, or san needed berlin's permission to send the planes on to a 3rd country because the aircraft came from the former east german air force. the germany is not planning to send any of his own fighter jets to ukraine. hundreds of thousands of people across france join protests against changes to the pension system. demonstrators occupying the headquarters of a luxury good firm in paris and protesters gathered outside france is constitutional court, which will decide on friday whether to allow or block government plans to raise the retirement age. from $62.00 to $64.00, he was president joe biden as hailed america's close ties with ireland and, and addressed his parliament in dublin on his 3 day trip to commemorate the 25th

anniversary of the good friday agreement. is that both countries were united in the conviction that better days lie ahead. joe biden started his day with the irish head of state michael higgins, taking part in a tree planting ceremony. oh, and ringing the p. spell with his irish heritage never far from his thoughts to scroll mar. yeah. or it would be the bell commemorates the good friday agreement, which ended decades of sectarian violence in northern ireland. but for the most part, the u. s. president's trip has made a light hosted one visiting his ancestral home towns and joining the prime minister to watch

a youth group play the irish sport of commode g. am. we're very fortunate to have the u. s. president and us administration that takes an active and if not daily, certainly weekly interest in irish affairs were one of only $200.00 countries in the world. and we're, we're very fortunate that we're always high on the presence agenda under top of mind when he's dealing with european affairs. that special relationship was front of mind for biden, when he addressed the irish parliament. my good friend, brock obama, is my good friend. his grandfather was a shoemaker like mine, sailed 5 weeks earlier from the shame, poor the idea they both sale for a new life and thought their grand shoulder. great, great grandsons would both be president, i think is really a little bit of irish malarkey

with the u. s president hoping for a 2nd term in office. it's a message. sure to go down. whoa. with the 31000000 americans who claim irish ancestry, even if it was targeted as irish america, the vote for the upcoming election, it doesn't take away from the genuineness of the actual reach of sentiment. on the last day of his to her biden will make some of his distant relatives, is it a catholic shrine and make a speech in his ancestral hometown of ballina? the talent next? how of white sand beaches and crystal clear waters? the images are alluring to tourists and uncle p. p. lee island to sharks. during a year's long break from human visitors at my obey a remarkable influx of black tip reef sharks occurred. so what has happened since the bay, which was made famous the world over as it became the backdrop for leonardo dicaprio movie the beach, re open to tourist?
3:13 am
well, here's look for about 4 years, my abbe looked pretty much like this, mostly empty of people. and a prime spot for black tip reef sharks. a 100 to a 160 a day in this quiet, sheltered coral reef cove tie authorities had closed access in 2018 to mitigate the effects of tourism. and then the pandemic hit, keeping people away even longer and allowing the sharks. they're obviously not the jaws variety to flourish. oh, so now what with what was called a limited reopening in 2022. limited as in $375.00 visitors per hour. and no one allowed in the water over their knees, plus no boats, docking in the bay project. my a bay shark watch says the shark numbers are down by 3 quarters from their recent peak that's not unexpected and considered well,
3:14 am
okay. we're hoping that we are with the restriction in place, we can mitigate that service on them. and now we're doing this research in hopes that we can find ah, the best way for tourism and other environment to clicks is yeah, the have to save it. if you will let people go. so it we will destroy it. definitely. so i really appreciate the, the way that the close the beat for the swimming probably does. because to save the nita barring another intervention, environmental stewards, no. this space will remain a tourist destination. but if the coral reef is now safe and $30.00 to $40.00 sharks still come here each day, it can still sort of be a win win. it's actually going to bring new ah tourism scheme as well. and we're going to benefit from that overall. so we don't talk about,
3:15 am
you know, closing every way or reducing the tourism number, but a thing me talking about minutes in it wisely. as the tourist numbers to this famous beach hold to about 4000 a day, the research into black tip reef sharks can continue, because now that are at least several dozen a day to track. and that's all the news now with states you in for a documentary about the cultural conflict faced by an east african warfare who grew up in a buddhist boarding school, will be back at the top of the next hour. athena a thane. b. currently, more people than ever on the move worldwide in such a better life or never, facile jessica.
