ah ah ah ah, this is dw news coming to you live from berlin. federal agents in the u. s. arrest man alleged to be at the center of a massive intelligence leak. a 21 year old member of the air national guard is in custody to be charged under the espionage act. he's believed to have shared classified documents, reportedly, to impress friends in a chat group. also coming up german foreign minister and only in about calls on

china to use its influence on moscow to help and the war in ukraine. beijing promises not to provide weapons to russia, but stopped short of condemning the conflict. plus for decades, finland has carefully positioned itself between moscow and the west. now it's part of nato's front line with russia. fins living near that border are suddenly facing a much more threatening neighbor. ah. hello, i'm terry martin. good heavy with us. the f b, i has arrested a suspect of the leak of classified documents, some of them relating to the war in ukraine. the 21 year old member of the nation of the massachusetts air. national guard is accused of sharing highly sensitive information with members of an online chat group. their circulation on social media
1:02 pm
has exposed military secrets from ukraine and diplomatically embarrassing details of u. s. espionage activities. arrested by a team of federal agents. the suspect, an employee of the united states air force national guard is accused of leaking a trench of classified documents, led away from his home in massachusetts. he'll now face the full weight of us justice. today the justice department arrested jack douglas to sheriff in connection with an investigation and to alleged unauthorized removal, retention, and transmission of classified national defense information to share it is an employee of the united states air force, national guard f. b i. agents took to sure and costly earlier this afternoon. without incident. the documents reveal top secret pentagon intelligence about both

allies and adversaries. but perhaps most concerning for u. s. officials are the classified files about the war in ukraine. u. s. defense secretary lloyd austin, said his department is launching review of intelligence, access, accountability, and control procedures. but u. s. president joe biden, who's currently on a visit to the republic of ireland, great. was came to play down, his worries over the potential fall out. i use it, sir, developmentally the time to go get a minute to log ladies. i'm concerned with contemporaneous this is the boston court house, where the alleged leeker is to appear on friday. but while the main suspect may be in custody dozens, more documents and their explosive content may yet come to light.
1:04 pm
earlier i spoke to d. w security corresponded thomas barrow. he told us more about the men are suspected of being behind the leak. well essentially he was very young and also low ranking within the national guard. he's being described as someone who worked as a sort of i t specialist within the intelligence wing of the massachusetts national guard. he was also simultaneously in his private life. if you will very active in online forums and it was in one of those, or 9 forums in a forum which is well known within the gaming community that he allegedly published some of these documents out. some of the people who knew him in his private life, we even were with him in these online forums. said that it was probably just a stupid kids mistake. and that his goal was probably just to inform some of the
1:05 pm
people in those networks about what was happening in real life. but for us investigators, the picture is a very different one. they're investigating now whether there must be or whether they could be a more turbulent aspect to this suspect. and at the same time, he is going to face charges under the u. s. espionage act for what is being described already by us investigators. as a deliberate criminal act, thomas is leak, is being looked at as the most damaging of its kind and at least a decade. what sort of information has been compromised? well, a lot of information has been compromised from the war and ukraine to activities in the war in ukraine in particular, but also us spying activities both and adversaries and friendly countries. i would say that the key word here when it comes to analyzing the fall out, analyzing the impact of this is trust. now you're over, it's obviously clear that these kind of documents, when they are so sensitive,
1:06 pm
they're not supposed supposed to be disclosed. they're not supposed to be discussed in the wider public. so that's the reason why now that they are being discussed. the u. s. government is basically trying to limit the potential damage by talking to allies by all to trying to understand what has to change within the intelligence community. so that this doesn't happen again from their standpoint. but you already mentioned previous r leaks in previous years. for example, the snowden leaks a decade ago, and i would say that the fall out, compared to the at snowden, leaks 10 years ago has been very different, at least if you look at it from the european perspective back then 2013. the fall out here was huge, even in cities like berlin, even the german chancellor back then anglo merkel stressing that spying among friends is unacceptable. well, we're not seeing this kind of outrage from us allies, at least not publicly whether there are discussions privately behind closed doors
1:07 pm
with the u. s. administration. that's something that we still don't know. as you mentioned, or much of this information pertains to the war in ukraine, much the leaked and promotion that the leaked piles are suggest that that western military forces were talking. nato countries involved here are, are operating in ukraine. what are the implications of that told us? well, they could be very big, in fact, the implications there, but one direct impact, one immediate impact, if you will, as i could change the narrative in the war in ukraine, especially when it comes to the russian perspective. because they have been saying they will probably say this again, now that they are not only fighting against ukraine, that they're also fighting against nato. so it will be very interesting to see how all this develops and how, especially also capitols in the west, react to this information that has been published. thomas, thank you very much for now. that was our security. correspond at thomas sparrow. germany's foreign minister on the lena burbock is visiting china. she met with her

counterpart, chin gung in beijing. the to discuss china's tensions with taiwan, beijing's human rights record, and the war in ukraine, thereby called on china to exert its influence on russia to end its war. in new cray, german foreign minister, angelina bare bach on her inaugural visit to china. after landing in the port city of tianjin on thursday. bareback put the tough topics on the table in beijing. the war and ukraine is high on berlin's agenda, bareback called on china to use its influence with russia to end the invasion as is good stuff. he knows it, that is good. the china has signaled its commitment to a solution. but i have to say frankly, that i wonder why so far, the chinese position hasn't included a call on russia, the aggressor to stop the war. and it's been highlighted in cheek to stop beijing, which sees itself as a mediator in the conflict,
1:09 pm
reiterated. it would not send weapons to its russian ally, fetch him regarding the export of military product. as china adopts a prudent and responsible attitude, we shall, china will not provide weapons to relevant parties of the conflict and will manage and control the export of items with civilian and military uses. in accordance with laws and regulations, gunter, another key issue up for discussion tensions between china and taiwan days after beijing stage to war games around the self governing island bare box at an escalation and the taiwan strait would be a horror scenario for the entire world. in response, china said it doesn't allow any foreign intervention on the matter yet. but there are issues the 2 sides agree on strengthening economic and trade cooperation . earlier bear bog toured german companies based in tianjin talks with wang ye, china's most senior foreign policy official,

our schedule before her departure or in the story. let's bring in marina hanker. she's director of the center for international security of the hearty school here in berlin. thanks, ring with us. morrila, china's foreign minister says his country will not send weapons to russia to use in its war against ukraine. should ukraine and its allies be comforted by that? well of course it's good news fact, by the way, china has been saying this for a while, and there was an official statement made in march. and as though you know, like, it's not necessarily anal inactive, bad books visit in beijing that day. you know, i kind of cleared that aspect of something that you know like was kind of known them already and before, but yes. and then the big picture of things. that's of course good news. do you believe i do believe it. and i think ged china knows that the entire global dynamics in particular, europe's role in this war would,
1:11 pm
terry, my chair escalate in the sense of that, you know, like right now china hopes that still some european countries are willing to, you know, take a somewhat of a and neutral position in this, the growing tensions in the asia pacific around taiwan, and not necessarily site with the americans. but you know, like, be neutral or even be somewhat sympathetic to china. and if at china starts actively being engaged in this war, delivering those weapons to rush, i think even most european countries would then say, well, you know, like, we can no longer even support china in other matters. now, germany has ice china to use its influence on moscow to end the war in ukraine. do we have any reason to believe that china will actually do that, given that it has not condemned russia's invasion of ukraine? well, exactly. so,
1:12 pm
and china has never called russia the aggressor in this war and has never asked any concessions from russia. and so, you know, it's, it's hard and to judge how sincere china is in china. the war is depicted as a war that miss missed and mostly initiated by nato expansion. so it's a proxy war, randy united states fights against and russia. and so in the big picture of things, it seems pretty obvious that china here has a and biased perspective. and you know, like probably not the, the most ideal country to be actually any and neutral and negotiator for peace. though the other big issue dominating the german 4 ministers trip dot in china is taiwan. burbock warned of the dangers of escalating tensions over the island. how likely is it marina, that we will see an armed conflict over taiwan? and what would that mean? well, unfortunately,
1:13 pm
it becomes ever more likely, of course, there all sorts of deeds that are floating around, some speak of 2027, others speak of later. but a lot of folks in this world are convinced that there might be clashes. the big question of course is and how big the escalation will be. the united states is ever more firm to say they will interfere and they will protect taiwan or beyond taiwan side of china for example undertakes and lockheed of taiwan. and then, and exactly as a bare book set on her visit. it will, you know, completely shock the world or all you know, like supply lines connecting china and, you know, the europe and also the rest of the world. they will be and broken. and so, you know, like basically for no country on this planet and, you know, like it, they can ignore this conflict. we've seen a flurry of diplomatic activity by europe in china. some of it focusing on taiwan.
1:14 pm
does europe speak with one voice on taiwan? no, not at all as their deep divisions. and i think in all i get the statements coming out of brussels as speaking of china as a partner, but then also a competitor and a systemic rival. also illustrate that there's no, not a consensus because of course, you'd like to put these 3 terms next to one another. it might seem quite as ask, it's a frantic, but that's exactly the position as so you know that there's this and combination of use some countries view it mostly as a partner. others have this competitor function and for others, you know, like they're very much citing with the united states and see and china, a systemic rival. they don't even, you know, and want to accept the idea that china could be coming up with its own world order . and are willing to contested marina. thank you very much for your insights that was marina hanker from the healthy school here in berlin. well,

emma lena burbock isn't the only high profile visitor to beijing. at the moment, brazil's president louise and nazi lula da silva is also on his inaugural visit to the country. he has met his chinese counterpart, she gin paying their meeting comes a day after lula criticized the outside role of the u. s. dollar in the world economy and lashed out at the international monetary fund. the veteran leftist is seeking closer ties with these countries, most important trading partner. the theme of his visit has been that brazil is back since taking office in january, luda has tried to reposition his country as a global deal broker between the east and the west. now let's take a look of some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. the 1st claim carrying prisoners from yemen war has arrived in the city of aiden as part of the major prisoner exchange, the who, the rebels. anna,

infrastructure. it directly resulted in filane joining nato, which doubled the alliances border with russia. until last week there were 5 data members that together shared a 1200 kilometer border with russia or its enclave. colleen in grad, those countries were in norway, estonia, lapierre, lithuania and poland. finland's border to russia is over 1300 kilometers long itself. are corresponding terry schultz reports now from the finish border town of immaterial on how the country plans to keep nato's northeastern plank safe as to more than a century of self reliance and security. finland now has reinforcement. as the 31st member of nato sharing the alliance guarantee of mutual defense for decades, moscow had warned its western neighbor not to go there. the red light form for the
1:18 pm
rushes you know, was, are, you know, accessing to nato. and of course, we were waiting for in some con, reaction that we've seen what, what russia has done in ukraine. so basically, anything is possible, no one knows any more, whether there are any lines. the kremlin won't cross, is believed, perhaps half of russian forces normally stationed along the finished border had been pulled into the war in ukraine. but it's not only soldiers, moscow uses to try to destabilize other countries. there's another tactic it employed several years ago. that bill and wants to guard against it, or saw a significant number of immigrants are pushed by russians to the finish border and crossing also also finished border. and you know, we couldn't manage those numbers. and however, in all you will never know in all this is kind of a preparation for the future. by this, you ha, martelli us means the fence. finland is building along its border with russia near the city of e matter, about 250 kilometers northeast of helsinki. he muttered. mayor mathias hilton says,
1:19 pm
for decades, city residence did not think of russia as a threat. large numbers of russians visit or live in the matter, but that was before the kremlin launched war on ukraine. and now we don't have a look for debility for that anymore. and that's why, though we have all fought everything differently on short nato. and that's why here, why ah, it's just so different world than what we were living when a half years ago. no one is sure what that different world will look like, and some fear, the worst people who had very clear and plans and know we're about the future there . so maybe i'll put that off for a year and see how things go, you know, and that kind of thing. so in case what, well, just the uncertainty, i think is what it is. because do want to invest and put a lot of money into something and then you know, within a year or so, you know, be that it's under somebody else's control or something. it's like imaginary safety

. i think defense. so wouldn't really matter if they would come with the tanks or some kind of power. the 3 kilometer pilot project is slated to be done this summer, stretching to 200 kilometers. over the next several years. more we can talk now to ero sat, a cass. she's a research fellow with the finished institute of international affairs and join just from helsinki. thanks for joining us. now, we heard a resident of finland in a report, voicing concern that russia might try to now capture finished territory. is that fear justified? well, i think the general public cast these various, obviously, but i mean the buddha is not the border fence is maybe because the finland is to any nato. it's basically in order to reinforce the, the, kind of the terrorists and defense against hybrid threats. so the buddha
1:21 pm
authorities, they know that the border is very long and we need to be a very efficient and make sure that the board would it be used to hybrid means of influencing. but precise has nothing to do with the fact that finance is to any nato and anthony to ally, finland will be defended by an a 2 article 5. so it's not a question of russian troops, for instance, on hangs going. coming over that at the finish russian border. short of invading finland. what sort of pressure is russia already exerting? honest nordic neighbor. well, i mean, we haven't seen this hybrid sources of influencing in previous years. for instance, like that was in the in said already. illegal immigration and is kind of be overhauled in the future. either it is possible that russia will use this means of hybrid influencing in the future as well. so the board authorities will have to make sure that the long. busy border will be fully covered and especially those
1:22 pm
areas which are more highly populated and more easily accessible are by different kinds of transport. routes, for instance, that can be better protected, but obviously are in the future. we could see other ways of hybrid influencing and threats as well, such as our hybrid that tax, but that because they already is covered by nato's article 5 to say. and then obviously we have had some, you know, air space violations in the future. that could also take place in the future. but as fin, it is the nature ally. now we are in a much safer place that we were before joining the alliance. and it must be mentioned that the lot is happening in the cyber cyber sphere as well, which we don't really see. now russia, says hamlin, joining nato is of russia's, says finland, joining nature was a threat to its national security. it's promised counter measures. so what poor
1:23 pm
might those countermeasures take euro? well, i mean, this is very tradition of rhetoric from the rush from russia's pod. i mean this rhetorics been ongoing for years already. ah, russia has always resisted nato enlargement. but we have to say this, that finland as peaceful country. we are not, you know, joining nato to threaten any country, not russia, not any one else. and, and therefore we are doing it just to maximize our own national security. i think as finan becomes nato member out, the likelihood of seeing any kind of a threats imposed by russia will decrease tremendously because we haven't made his article 5 asset terrance from now on it or thank you very much for talking with us . that was ero circa a research fellow at the finish institute international affairs. thank you. now moving on to kenya and that countries opposition alliance has called for fresh
