china and the u. s. plaza man and the bird. he rescued have become a huge social media star in india, bought wildlife authorities and not to k, unlikely french in. ah, i'm jarrett read glad you could join us. chinese president, she jim being has had a rather busy few weeks. he's been on somewhat of a diplomatic offensive to grow and cement his nation's influence. china's bro could a truce between iran and saudi arabia and proposed peace talks between russia and ukraine. she himself has travelled to moscow and hosted various leaders from europe and brazil. president lula is the laces. the payment on friday in beijing lula is on a 4 day visit, hoping to ford closer ties with his country's largest trading partner.

while that meeting came on the same day as german foreign minister and a lena beer box on talks in beijing after meeting with her chinese count about chin dang, she talked about taiwan and chinese influence on the war in ukraine. i nearly dealership a military escalation in the taiwan strait, which has already mentioned that which shut down 50 percent of world trade every day would be a horror scenario for the entire world as good stuff. you know, as it is good that china has signaled its commitment to a solution. but i have to say frankly, that i wonder why the chinese position so far does not include a call on the aggressor, russia to stop the war. didn't cheek to stop him. and his chin gang statement on china's position regarding ukraine. the g, as the ukranian crisis, has developed. the lesson is profound and worth deep reflection. the territory is
7:19 pm
indivisible and security is equally indivisible, without recognition of the security interests of a particular party. crises and conflicts are inevitable. china is willing to continue to work for peace and hopes that all parties involved in the crisis will remain objective income and make constructive efforts to resolve the crisis through negotiations, social jefferson and meanwhile, china is extending its diplomatic footprint elsewhere too. and perhaps the most striking example has been the recent warming of ties between long time for iran and saudi arabia, on the chinese mediation delegations gathered in beijing last week. it was the 1st thoughts meeting between saudi arabia and iran in 7 years and happened without united states involvement. we can go now to war thor and speak with elisia bye, who's good chinese foreign policy fellow for the european council on foreign

relations. thank you for your time, alexia and much is being talked about this diplomatic, flowery, centered on china. recently, the expansion of its influence, the south china morning post, is describing it as china's filth appointed status. as the global peacemaker. do you think there's any truth to that particular assessment? well, this might be a little bit overblown, especially in the context of what had, what's happening everywhere around the world these days. so definitely all these meetings, they do re present an intensification of ties between europe and china, but they should be read in the context of what's haven't been happening within this kind of relationship in the past for years. so 1st of all, we had the pandemic and abundant because really resulted in a freezing of ties between europe and they drank. but at the same time we've seen
7:21 pm
now, but she didn't, pink consolidating is power and being really, really sure about his status and the security of, of the ccp with his leadership. and i was trying to refrain the relationship with china being much more assertive, but also with china trying to present itself with a neutral actor in disregard. speaking of, of that, china broke it a deal recently between saudi arabia and iran to revive diplomatic relations. what's your take on the significance of this development? i think that we shouldn't over estimate the significance of china being part of this deal. so on the one hand, obviously as aging has been trying really hard to engage itself more in the middle east. it has a very vast economic interest. it sees its relationship with different gulf countries and different countries in the me least more broadly at crucial to energy security. but at the same time,
7:22 pm
i think that the interest of both saudi arabia and iran converge to the interest of the jenks. so it is not really about being, being able to bring all the parties together. but rather about all the parties understanding that their interests are in line in a very precise moment in time. so they shouldn't also not be translated into china, actual ability to act as that deal maker or piece broker, for example, in the context of the rush and aggression against the ukraine. because this context is very, very different. and china, the interest also are not very much in line with what europe has in mind regarding the war and ukraine festival. i think that china crucial and key interest there in the context of china. russia relation is to weaken the west, and we can nato a such for the jane. the war in ukraine is a war of the west against russia. and also it is a proxy war of the us and in the context of the fi,
7:23 pm
no america strategy rivalry. this also means that for china, you bring in victory would be understood as the victory of the us and of the quote unquote western had gemini. so i think that. 5 if you look at china diplomatic activities and what everything b j has been doing on the shooting thing in the past year. in the final russian relations, it's quite clear that china has been constantly and very resolutely supporting russia, talking points and the rushing perspective on, on a potential peace deal or negotiations of any kind in disregard. so we have to be really, really cautious not to overestimate china potential role in the, on the front speaking of ukraine, where we're seeing large developing nations like china suggesting that they could act as mediators in the war and ukraine. based on what your you've just said, that seems to be an unrealistic proposal. yeah,
7:24 pm
definitely. if you look at china diplomatic messaging or at all the documents that they didn't get published since the very beginning of the war in ukraine, it's very clear that china does not take into account the interest of the ukrainian side of this conflict. so i think that the 1st precondition for beijing to print to play any kind of a constructive role would be for, for china to actually acknowledge the vector of aggression. and this is very highly unlikely. so if china will engage itself in any way in any kind of these protests, this would also potentially translate into beijing pushing forward ration goals. and it wouldn't really take into account ukrainian agency. and this is something that we really have to highlight again and again. and all these european attempts to somehow try to convince beijing to distance itself from from moscow. i think
7:25 pm
there are an example of wishful thinking to a large degree. and obviously clear european messaging is very important. but also we should not have very high expectations towards china to, to change its position toward brushing to record. we've got about a minute left. we've seen european leaders visit beijing this week with expressing seemingly different positions on taiwan. what will happen in europe within itself, and the us don't get on the same page when it comes to a to tie one. i think precedent, my calling to visit and the optics surrounding it were very unfortunate and his comments were stream the unfortunate as well as creating a lot of misperceptions. especially given the fact that in some media and in public debate, his position or, or his remarks were regarded as represented this off of europe in general. and i
7:26 pm
think it's very important to highlight the fact that my client is not the president of europe in any way and the following meeting. now, for example, if i'm in a bad visiting china are a form of damage control. and this is something that is, you know, quite important in terms of, of the optics which much more nuanced messaging towards beijing. and you know, this narrative that if there is an escalation that europe doesn't want this kind of an escalation, even if it happens, it would translate into a conflict that would affect the whole world. europe included, that was a little boy who sca chinese foreign policy fellow for the european council on foreign relations. thank you so much for your analysis. thank you. i to india now and an unlikely friendship. mohammed reef has written to social media fame off to he rescued and injured crane
