on their own timeline, we have pledged that support for as long as it takes us the secretary just said this week, united states announced our latest security assistance package as part of our ongoing commitment to ukraine. as we standard at 80 ukrainian military continues to perform very well. intent fighting in around bachmann continues and has for several months. rusher is expanding significant manpower for very little gain. russia is intensifying, indiscriminate shelling in a vicar and other cities and urban areas. and russia continues to pay severely for its war of choice. unlike ukrainian forces, who are highly motivated to fight for their country to fight for their freedom, their democracy in their way of life. the russians lack in leadership, they lack will. the morale is poor. and the discipline is eroding. russia has resorted to tightening conscription laws as they indiscriminately feed their citizens into the chaos of war. and so far they've been quite infected in the
4:46 pm
coordination or direction of the miners maneuver on the battlefield. over the past year, rushes temporary territorial gains have come with enormous losses. hundreds of thousands of russians fled their country in addition to the casualties they are trying to avoid fighting. and putin's war, russia continues to fail in achieving its strategic objectives. they fail the seas keys, they fail to topple the ukrainian government and they fail to fracture nato. in fact, they done just the opposite key stance. the people of ukraine are in bolden and nato has never been stronger as president biden. and secondly, austin repeatedly said, united states remains committed as long as it takes. thank you, and i look forward to your questions. thank you, mr. secretary. thank you chairman. our 1st question, go to rachel cohen, defense news. i thank you for doing this. i have one question for each of you and
4:47 pm
mr. chairman, we know from the recent leaks that the pentagon was bullish on ukraine's chances of re taking much territory in the spring counter offensive. is that still your assessment now or what has changed and are you concerned that spring conditions on the ground, a little slow things down. and then for secretary austin, looking at the current crisis in sudan, what lessons learned from the afghanistan evacuation or shaping your efforts to prepare to get us embassy staff out of sudan. and has the state department asked you to begin that process? let me start by saying that america common on teacher operations, specifically for it or any of the substances in these leaks that are out there. but i will say that our task and our commitment to ukraine was to provide the training in the equipment a for up to 9 brigades. armored brigades armored met brigades to conduct either offensive or defensive operations. those brigades have trained their man and their
4:48 pm
equip, and they are prepared for combat operations. so whenever and wherever ukraine chooses to use them, we will continue that support. and i am very confident those units ability to succeed. regarding sudan or the department through our headquarters at africa and continues to monitor very closely the situation on the ground. and we continue to coordinate with state department to make sure we have a common vision of what the situation is. and we always want to make sure that we're doing prudent planning, which is what we're doing right we've we've deployed some forces to, to, into theater, to ensure that we provide as many options as possible. if we are called arm to do something. and we haven't been called on to do anything yet. no decision on
4:49 pm
anything has been made in for operation security purposes. as you would guess, i won't specify, you know, where those troops move to. and, but our focus is to make sure that we continue to do prudent planning and that we create and maintain as many options for our president as possible. thank you and next question will go to dish on and better a r d. and my question is going to it to both air coating fighter jets. ukraine said that they need more fighter jets. poland has just delivered mix. did you talk about fighter jets and how helpful could they be for ukraine right now? well, what we all believe is what ukraine needs most urgently is ground based air defense capability. that is what has enable them to prevent the russian air forces from
4:50 pm
having a mean meaningful impact in this fight. and so you've heard of say that for last several months, and we will continue to say that because that is what is, is, is most important in the current in the future fight at the immediate future. we have to make sure that the ukrainians have the ability to protect their infrastructure, protect their citizens, but also protect troops. the troops are maneuvering. so we, we continue to engage our partners and, and allies, and emphasize that we need to do everything we can to ensure that ukraine has adequate air, defense, ground based air defense capability. and i have to applaud the work and our partners are doing it were possible, they're stepping up to the plate and i believe that that we can still do more and
4:51 pm
i'm asking them to do more. and i believe that they will respond for next question . will go to will dunlap agency front press thank you. i was going to leave it there. that press conference by us defense secretary lloyd austin, that he was joined by the chairman of the joint chief of staff, the highest military position in the us. and i still have our political correspondence. i'm in the out here in the studio, simon. and to wrap it up, what stood out for you in that statement from austin. i think the via us defense secretary was trying to sound rather as if it was business as usual. he, he, he talked about this group of countries to 50 nations in the ukraine contact group and said they've been meeting and coordinating of a months. and they're still doing that very well. and they stand behind the
4:52 pm
principles of ukraine sovereignty and back in ukraine. and he listed there is some of the bigger items that have been delivered, you know, javelin sting is how it says high mas, some of these are systems, the names which we've become a bit more familiar with over the past year. and i think what stands out is that, you know, there's, at least in those words is an attempt to say we are totally on track. we have got $230.00 tanks delivered to the ukrainians. we've got 9 alma brigades that we promised, and we're, we're delivering and we're doing more all the time. well, you know, that's one side of the story. but as we were saying just before, perhaps it's not everything that ukraine wants and it needs to really make a difference to turn this war around on the ground. indeed, he was asked to the very, it was the very end about the fight digits. and he said,
4:53 pm
that's not the priority at the moment, right? well, that's not the priority for the ukraine contact group, which wants to focus, particularly on things like new nations. and they also enriching the using the term logistics war in the last few days and weeks. because it's also of course, clear that any military operation has to have a huge supply chain. and one of the things that the con, the russians have experienced themselves in the very beginning. absolutely, absolutely. they got a huge military, but you got to get the troops and the equipment to the right parts of the battlefield at the right time to do to, to do the job, do some damage. well, the same applies to the ukrainians. we're seeing that played out particularly right now. one of the announcements that lloyd austin city is pleased to have heard was from the germans, who said that they are setting up a repair hub for ukrainian tank tanks that you know, could do with a bit of
4:54 pm
a refit. bit of a repair work that will be in poland, a little start operating and they say towards the end of may. and that's, it is a big commitment. you know, it's hundreds of millions of euros. it's something that's very much needed. even while the discussions about what more can be done, or what more heavy equipment can go in, continue. so, you know, this meeting is about maybe some of them, the little things you know, estonia as committed and so many 1000000 rounds of ammunition from its limited stocks. and other countries are also stepping up in the defense secretary mentioned, in particular the commitments from germany, denmark, and the netherlands jointly to provide more tanks. i think denmark in the netherlands are going to provide leopard to those of the modern main battle tanks that are desperately needed. another 14 of them are going in to join these
4:55 pm
units. but the, those 3 countries together are going to put some of the older leopard ones in as well. so, you know, you are seeing some fighting power of firepower on the ground in ukraine. it's not as if nothing is happening and i think, you know, it is fair enough for, for, for the lloyd austin and the, and the other officials. they're to put what they're doing as it were in the shop window. he also referred to those intelligence leaks for recently, and he said nothing will fracture our unity. how significant were these leaks? you reckon? yeah, it was pretty interesting. was it that he just that a no, i guess he was trying to full stall a question. these messages and reports of contacts with some of the allies and disputes and differences of opinion. you know, some of it's been denied and some of it has just prompted reactions of,
4:56 pm
of no comment. so it's hard to say what is valid and was isn't a but certainly lloyd austin saying this is they take it all extremely seriously. they've spoken to their partners and they're happy. he's happy to say the partners are, you know, taking it on the chin and not complaining about things perhaps that now their u. s. allies have leaked to the public a little bit embarrassing certainly, but he says, so can i know it's not going to blow a hole in the, in the unity of the, of the contact group sample. it, of course, want to thank you very much for this analysis. and that's it for now from simon and me and the rest of the news stream here and the berlin. i'll have an update for you shortly. we have a proper news program coming up in just a few moments ago. first in berlin state youth
