military generals. a continuing for a 2nd week, at least 420 people have been killed. and 3 and a half 1000 have been wounded and many of the injured a stranded and unable to get to hospitals, which are struggling with the lack of supplies. thousands of people at sheltering in their homes. the power cuts are limiting communication not now shed as a journalist, his following the developments in see don from cairo. and he told me more about the situation on the ground in how to get the situation was obviously a little bit quiet. you mentioned evacuation took place yesterday. however, it's still quite a catastrophic and fighting appears to picking up a 17 of hospitals that are in here center. and the cross wires as well as other vulnerable populations such as prisoners, many political prisoners that were you know, stained during pro democracy demonstrations. so some of them have been able to,
1:03 pm
to get free, uncertain about the circumstances of others that obviously no provisions for them. and then the circumstance extremely dire. so that's just a little bit of light to shine on, you know, some different demographics within their homes. which of course, as you, as you mentioned, are grappling with severe shortages of basic needs. i was just going to ask you about those, those major shortages of basic needs. can you tell us a little bit about how civilians are coping with the situation? ah, yeah, there's, there are a number of informal networks called resistance committees. were spearheaded pro democracy demonstrations since december 2018 that brought down former burn leader, motor sheer. the reason i mentioned them is because as 8 has been slow to get into
1:04 pm
the country and serve 8 provisions to, to be restarted and assist people throughout the conflict. these committee through their networks have been a liked line for people. they're trying to get fuel on the black market medicines for the black market get food equal. and so this is the main way that they're coping however, you know, despite their quite heroic efforts. and it's still quite an impossible situation for many that are deciding whether or not it's really feasible for them to stay. or perhaps they should follow many others that have made the decision to leave the car to look to them. and many of those who have left have risked dangerous roads and cross the northern border into egypt, which is where you are. can you tell us what the situation at the sit on egypt border is right now? yes, i mean it's, it's, it's quite dangerous. just because, you know,
1:05 pm
between egypt and it's about maybe around 900 kilometers down as a 3rd biggest country in africa. so it's very, very long road and there's hardly any resources let alone in the capital. but once you leave the capital, if you want to get water or get food, you're really relying on local communities. the trip is extremely tiring. and there's also fear of this checkpoint stuff by militia, particularly the rapids support forces. who are, you know, obviously the main adversary in this for against the army right now are setting up checkpoints, and reports of people have gunpoint or looting. so the dangers of trying to get to the egypt and border, it's quite difficult. journalists not now shed in cairo. thank you so much for updating us. thank you so much. now, hundreds of foreign diplomats and citizens have been evacuated from the sudanese capital of hot tomb as violent trashes continue across. the city. countries are
1:06 pm
rushing to transport the citizens back home as the fighting shows no sign of a basing. more than 1000 european union citizens are among those who have been evacuated. germany has listed $300.00 people out of food on, including germans and all the foreign nationals. the evacuees have been flown out on 3 plains, the 1st of which touched down in berlin and the today you had got a full joins us now from eastern bull. he's the deputy chairman of germany's conservative c d. u. c su, parliamentary group. welcome to the w 7. it was a chaotic thought to evacuating german nationals from food on all things going more smoothly now. good afternoon. yes, i mean, so. sorry. i thought we heard it was possible for the german apples to bring out more than 300 german citizens, not only diplomats,
1:07 pm
but also people were living in sudan festival to jordan. and then later on from back to berlin. so this is where made made really great job, thanks to our soldiers. but we will have to analyze how we came into such a situation that nobody really knew what could happen in. so don, it reminds me the best way to the situation there. couple years ago we, i think not only germany, but also other countries will have to analyze how we could see into these to be a struggle. if a change, the german government of losing precious time to, to a lack of transparent communication. can you explain to us what you meant?
1:08 pm
now, we have a situation in germany that after the constitution, we have a parliamentary army as we call it. so for every undertaking we do with the, with the army out of the system of our alliance, the problem and has to agree on that. and for that reason, it is absolutely necessary that the prom implement is informed by the government. what is going on, what the government is, lee of planning, what they decided to do with the german army, although area as we called it and the information where really dia, in the last week we learn more from twitter than from the official channels. we do have with our,
1:09 pm
with our government. so that is the very reason that we have been criticizing our government was being not so cooperative with the parliament as they should be your hand that a fully deputy chairman of germany, c d u c. s u parliamentary group. thank you so much for speaking to us monday. w. today. my pleasure. a european union foreign ministers are meeting in luxembourg today to discuss ukraine's appeal for more weapons and ammunition in its fight against russia. the ministers will be debasing a 1000000000 euro procurement plan to boost ukraine's weapon supplies as part of a multi track joint arms deal that use foreign policy. chief joseph burrell says there is some disagreement among e, u officials, but he says it is a situation of extreme urgency and that a decision will be made. and soon earlier i spoke with d. w as roman gunter and co,
1:10 pm
who's in cave and d, w. 's rosie bert chart, who's following the meeting in luxembourg for us. they told me more about the delivery of ammunition to ukraine. and the european union has been facing public frustration from ukraine over this plan to deliver ammunition. and that is because the plan was agreed about a month ago. now it's a multi track approach. and the 1st strike is an essay under which e u. countries draw down on their own existing supplies of ammunition is to send them to ukraine. no, that is already in action or we know ukraine has been thanking you countries for that, but there is a 2nd track of that approach. and this is to jointly procure more ammunitions for ukraine for the future. and that is where the debate is like, because there is currently some wrangling over the legal definition of sourcing these emulations from the european union defense industry from arm suppliers within the e. you know, a, some have dismissed this as bureaucratic,
1:11 pm
that's what the fin finished. ford minister told me on his way into these talks. but on the other side of this debate, which does seem technical in nature is a very genuine desire to be thought. the use arms industry for the future to be able to deliver on the use promised to stay by ukraine fight for as long as it takes the also. so you countries canada up to what they see as a really radically changed security environment. here on the continent, so the goal overall seems to be the same, but there are some divisions within the european union among members on her exactly to turn that promise that plan into action. okay, so we've got some divisions, but again that you use foreign policy chief judge burrell says that a decision will be made roman, if i can ask you what keith hoping for from this meeting in life of the expected ukrainian counter offensive. well, there is a sense of growing frustration here in ki, if with the you, because the use not able seems not to be able to, to find
1:12 pm
a solution for that for that problem. and to start buying. finally, at the shelves that ukraine so urgently needs on ukraine's preparing i made offensive operation. and according to some calculations in ukrainian media. and the demand for new shells is, is going to grow erm sky high. so a some say that ukraine would like to fire up to $2025000.00 shows a day, which would mean that and if you, you would deliver at once all those shells it would last for about one or 2 months, maybe 3 at best. of course, ukraine's ukraine becomes shells and, and, or missiles from other sources outside the you. but it gives you an example of how much is the demand, how highs the demand and people, he and key of they say the, you seems not to quite understand how high the price you crate is paying for. or in this war every day and every hour, just this morning, we saw a ceremony of an
1:13 pm
o for a farewell to a fallen ukrainian soldier and such ceremonies. our daily routine hearing t, if so are ukraine is losing a lot of its soldiers, especially in the fighting by bahamas, where an of the russian forces nearly control the whole city, but ukrainians are not giving up. and the ukraine in presence landscape, her has said recently again that how important it is to, to keep button would keep fighting the crime. and thank so much that's when gunter anchor in the cave and rosy bird chat reporting from like from that thanks so much ti, beth and lighted the ease efforts to boost ammunition supplies to ukraine. ahead of a counter offensive. mike martin, who's a senior fellow in war studies at kings college london, told me when and how this counter offensive is likely to start. well, in one sense it's already started. so what we've seen over the last week or 10 days or so, what is called shaping operations. and the idea of those is to confuse the russians
1:14 pm
and to convince them the attacks going to come from hair ball. and so we've seen stuff in the information space, we've seen those videos statements by ukrainian ministers. and most recently they've asked for media silence, which is a good way of getting the russians anxious. we've also seen some probing attacks, some establishing of a few ukrainian positions which then withdraw. and then last night we saw surface drones attack some of the rushing black sea fleet. and so that's the boat, which is a classic move to overload russian decision making. so there, worrying about this happens of rather than spending that i'm thinking about the counter offensive. so all of these 3 things together are telling us that ukrainians really have already started shaping the battle field and trying to confuse and to see the russian forces. ok, but russia will, of course, be preparing its troops for that the train in counter offensive. so how do you rate
1:15 pm
ukraine's chances of success? well, the key point is that the russians don't know where this counter offensive. the main blow of it is going to fall. and in order to have a successful offensive like that, you need a surprise, creativity, and perception. and, and those 3 things, the claims that demonstrate to us over the previous year that, that the very good at those things actually, and they need to because they're fighting for their territory. on the other hand, the russian forces are quite high rock who quite slow to make decisions and often they continue pursuing lines of activity the on, on very successful for them. so just looking at the 2 forces, i think we can say ukrainians stand a good chance. the final point i would make is the ukraine has to be successful this year. the west has significantly equipped ukraine for this council offensive. and if they aren't successful this year, then is very unlikely that the west is going to quit them again for another council
1:16 pm
. so i was just going to ask about that because of course there are more supplies and some of that ukraine's in current capabilities, basically give it one chance for a major counter. yeah, well i think if you, if you taught the sums of what's been donated, ukraine's got maybe to ahmed divisions or maybe a for the, to a mechanized or like, well, the vicious that's enough for a good showing this summer. i think it's not correct to say that they've only got one attack in, in that use of the word offensive. but they, they have a series of options this summer. and that, that size a force really is going to be successful or used by the end of the summer. so those analysts are right in the sense that ukraine has one chance this summer to try and psychologically break the russian forces in ukraine. yeah, just a quick question about that. no russia saying it's advanced in buffalo while ukraine says it's holding the front line. and can we expect any sort of particular
1:17 pm
breakthrough that no, i mean, i mean what's happening in batman is what's been happening for the last few months, which is that ukraine is deploying the minimum number of forces that needs to hold on. the city was inflicting a maximum damage on the russian forces and keeping the russian leadership, concentrating on backward wall ukraine repairs elsewhere. i would expect that once the, the main thrust of this substantial part of the training offense, it gets on the way that the pressure will be relieved on because the russians will have to pull their forces away from it. mike, thanks so much as always as mike martin, a senior fellow at kings college london. thank you. all right, let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world. police and tenure say 58 bodies of now being exempt from a mass grave. it's suspected they will follow is of a christian cold, who believed that they would go to heaven if they starved themselves called leader

now it might be some people's dream dangling from a zip line and flying faster than a 100 kilometers an hour on rio de janeiro is iconic sugarloaf mountain. now that is the vision of the company that operates the cable car to the top of the cities. famous landmark for the project is drawing fierce criticism from local activists. who say it will turn the unesco protected site into something resembling an amusement park o sugarloaf mountain. the world famous symbol of rio de janeiro is now the sight of a struggle. a group of protesters have gathered at the foot of the rock to the man that the world heritage site is protected from the construction of a zip line. andrea law, me, a resident and rock climber is one of them. no boilers yet. he would id a fight, it would disfigure sugarloaf mountain as zip line would turn it into a kind of amusement park or spectacle. did you poppy either foyce floppy?

but some residence fear don't be disturbed by the loud screams of visitors. and that the supply and will damage local nature. the company plaque to bore foundations into the rock before receiving approval. local authorities initially rejected the project, but later reach an agreement with the company before construction work continues to my line is being scared out an assessment which found that the impact on nature will be minimal and as you rock won't be damaged unless you so we think this is important to mention that a lot, but the protesters are unconvinced. they say bodine as assessment made only a superficial analysis of the impact to both rock and local white life and construction workers may end up felling more trees than stated. well the mountain is under heritage protection sugarloaf mountain is recognized as a unesco site. how could anyone be allowed to damage it? actually, it cannot become a private amusement park. i use someone who had that before who give
