9:00 am
ah ah ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin. russian missiles strike targets across ukraine overnight. ah, at least 2 people have been killed. the attacks come as keep prepares a counter offensive but will knew what western weapons and training be enough.
9:01 am
also coming up, extending a fragile cease fire in su down. the truth has been sporadically broken over the last 3 days, but is supposed to continue through the weekend. thousands are trying to evacuate and much needed supplies are trickling and plots. the un security council is unanimously condemning the taliban to move to ban afghan women from working for aid for ah, i'm sarah kelly. welcome to the program. we begin in ukraine where russian missile strikes have hit several ukrainian cities over night killing at least 5 civilians. a residential building was hit in oman, some 200 kilometer south of the capital. chief authorities also reporting deaths in the eastern city of ne pro where they say a woman and young child. what health did have you corresponded in economy as
9:02 am
following these developments for us from keith? nick, what more do we know about these latest attacks? well, just in the last couple minutes, there been reports coming in of 9 casualties and total fatalities. and many more wounded. i think those numbers are still set to move. the biggest concentration kelsey's, as you mentioned, day in woman, a provincial city shown a close is south of cave, a place that doesn't really get a lot of news far away from the front lines. and this was a residential block, 9 stories basically destroyed some very shocking images coming out of there now. and then hearing key if it seems like most of the missiles were shut down. but there were reports of bits of debris up see when these drones, when these missiles shut down, often that comes down and brings pounds down. other bits been structure, but largely it's a fairly stable situation here and key of but a real shock off to basically a month and a half and a 2 months of no,
9:03 am
no tax. how well equipped are you crazy air defense systems right now? neck i think it's important stress that these systems all coming to ukraine. they are here in large numbers up to that it was question about the number of rockets, the munitions they have to actually use these systems. and also this is a huge country, more than a 1500 kilometers east to west. so there really is never going to be enough to really make all of ukraine safe of the key of is better protected. and we have heard from the military here that they say 21 of 23 cruise missiles sent by russia have been shot down. but we don't know how many drones were sent. i think those numbers might still change. so there is a real sense here that yes, ukraine is getting lot better protecting people, but there's never going to be a 100 percent guarantee of safety. and this is a country that is very, very vulnerable. being so close to russia, these latest air attacks, they come after months of brush and failures to break through ukrainian defenses on the front line. also, if the day after a landmark phone call between the ukrainian and the chinese leaders,
9:04 am
is this significant timing that's certainly something that's being speculated about here in ukraine. if you look though at the targets, it's kind of really difficult to understand what the logic of this is to certainly isn't the kind of show can all attack that we saw a couple months ago where ukraine was attacked by dozens of missiles at the same time. big cities across the country and military targets. this was a civilian, a residential book in mind. similarly, residential areas in p pro, there's no real clear logic and there's no real clear sense here that russia is trying to maybe prevent some kind of ukranian counter attack. and it certainly is the case that russia is running out of these missiles. we've heard in recent months that looks these missiles wants, they're basically discovered and opened by the cranial torches. they see the serial numbers themselves have been produced. and basically taken off the production lines are sent to ukraine immediately. so there is really a sense that rush is running out of these michelle's and is having problems with creating building enough new ones to use up. you know, what's the supplies will be used up, but there is definitely
9:05 am
a sense here that russia is expecting something from ukraine and is trying to keep the pressure up to prevent ukraine, really making it taking vog sewell, these new western weapons coming to launch counter offensive economy joining us from cavan and just wanna a quick note for our viewers, those pictures that you have been seeing during our interview. those have been live on from the scene. nick, thank you so much for bringing us up to date with the very latest. now ukraine and the western world have been waiting for months for ukraine to begin a counter offensive against entrenched russian forces in the eastern part of the country. but the challenges for ukrainian troops are immense, as they take on a much bigger military force. our next report looks now at what it will take to win back territory and why it's taken so long to prepare training near the front. these ukrainian soldiers are getting ready for the big battle to come.
9:06 am
lanchen with gone more or less, okay. with some difficulty, we will work on that and get rid of the problems with what we found the mines. we'll rehearse again, and then it will be fine for them. i didn't have a lot of getting ukraine's forces ready has been no small undertaking. many of the countries most experienced soldiers have died or been wounded in over a year of grinding combat with russian forces. that means the counter offensive will also rely on fresh recruits who have anything battle. and there's another big problem, not only in, neither. so that's a moment there is a significant ammunition shortage. we lack high explosive, incendiary shells. so tanks and artillery are unable to work effectively. estimate if you know high explosives, shells have much more destructive power and the damage radius is much bigger than armor piercing shells. and i just loosely years look,
9:07 am
i'm going to do when the but anybody filling the ammunition gap will be key and will take time. but ammunition is just one part of a much bigger and more complex machine. the ukrainians must coordinate tanks, infantry artillery air power, and engineers relying on communications and quick decision making. but they're up against considerable obstacles. if, as expected, ukraine pushes to the south to cut russian held territory and half they have to cross. the denise pro river fell face mine fields and concrete obstacles known as devils teeth. and that's before they reach rush and trenches shown here in satellite pictures. while the russians will likely be shooting at the ukrainians the whole time. that kind of push requires equipment and may explain the longer than expected build up to the counter offensive. they've really been arming their military from the ground up. so originally was anti tank guided missiles,
9:08 am
then it was artillery than it was infantry fighting because then it was tanks, your listeners, or remember your view, a story will remember all the tanks that go plays the beginning the year. and so each stage ukraine receives what it wants and look, i would the exact same thing, it's always in that position and then it asks for the next level of support. so the problem for ukraine is that western support is not likely to last forever. the spring counter offensive, which may end up happening in the summer, has to show concrete gains to keep ukraine's backers happy and to keep the weapons coming. and let's get more. we're joined now by marina myron with a defense studies department. i kinks college london. thank you so much for joining us. how do you see the key challenges for the ukrainians if they do indeed pursue a so called spring offensive? thank you for having me. there are quite a few challenges and one of the challenges is obviously the weather. so it's very
9:09 am
difficult to time the contra offensive. aside from that, we have also heard that the ukranian brigades that are supposed to be use for this counter offensive are not ready. so 3 of the brigades will be ready some time in me, which gives the russians enough time to prepare and also gives out important information on the potential contra offensive. and, you know, apart from the fact that old equipment has allegedly arrived in ukraine, the ukrainian armed forces still have to solve the logistical problems. because depending on where they want to conduct the counter offensive and it better be a surprise for the russians who are prepared, they've been preparing defences since november. so since a time general survey can took charge of the so called special military operation, the russians have prepared national defences as we have heard in the report. and
9:10 am
this will be very difficult for the spring into breakthrough. so the idea is to stop them in their tracks. then we have that issue off conducting combined arms operations, which are very difficult in terms of maneuver in terms of logistics. you have to have a good leadership. and the question is, despite all the western equipment that has arrived, and even if the ukrainians console logistical problems without the russians actually the targeting western equipment. so the equipment actually arrives on the front lines where the contra offensive is supposed to take place. can the ukrainians must for this very, very complex operation, given all the pressure that is currently coming from the political leadership of ukraine as well as kind of international audience we're waiting for the ukrainian forces to deliver so they have new equipment, they have fresh recruits, be used and they have a very complex operation and they know that the russians are ready for that. can
9:11 am
they master at you think, i mean, because the ukrainians for their part, they say that they have trained these 9 brigades for a counter offensive. and what are we talking about here concretely? i mean, is this now a tactical shift in the way that this war has been, has been fought? well, that's a great question. i guess everybody wants to know if they can master it and that will depend not only on scale, it will depend on manufacturers. it will depend on where the contra offensive takes place. what the russians do about it, because the russians we have seen have started using more, a b ation. so for the ukrainians that will be difficult to coordinate the tanks and mechanized infantry and cold air support. and you know, the brigades have been prepared that is true, but have se operated to gas or in the theater using this new equipment as they have just stated. so it will definitely be a challenge. and besides,
9:12 am
we don't know because the media is covering possible points of attack, and of course the russians listening. so for ukraine, what will be important is to make sure to trick the russians into thinking they are attacking somewhere else in order to be explored. this long front line and use possibly battle reconnaissance in order to see where the defenses are, their weakest and try their marina, myron. i thank you so much for joining us to share that expertise. joining us from king's college in london, we appreciate it. thank you for having me. let's turn to some news elsewhere. sedans, army and the rival paramilitary rapids support forces have agreed to extend a fragile truce for another 72 hours. but there's been more fighting in the capital cartoon and other areas. hundreds of people have been killed in the 2 week conflict . thousands of sudanese civilians are still trying to escape many who are unable to
9:13 am
leave our short vital supplies. a growing number of countries are evacuating their diplomats and nationals as foreigners, head out millions of sudanese without the advantage of foreign citizenship are left to fend for themselves. grabbing whatever they can to stock up and vital supplies that are running out across the country. well, if you wanted more, there are no supplies, we're not receiving any new goods. no we, there's nothing coming in and any supply that has exhausted we cannot replace it. we hope that god will help the people here for i love a brother in a not shops and houses are being rated by armed groups for those who want to flee. one way out is through this land border crossing into egypt. but the path to that northern border from major cities like cartoon and m door mon is long and
9:14 am
dangerous. and fuel is scarce. a load that we need to, you know, we've been here for 3 days, tuesday, wednesday and today thursday. we don't know if the gas station will open on us as you can see, they open the station until 2 or 3 cars, and then they close at a fiddle. and without that fuel to escape the violence. those who live here must remain hoping the warring factions can be convinced to stop shooting. and earlier i spoke with sydney's journalist also no c, adams. he is following the developments in sudan from nairobi and he told me about the fighting taking place despite the extended truce. yes, if i could stay on going in a for the group, a tweak that they are going to put
9:15 am
together. i joined our, our, me to stop the fighting in was there for so finally the, the disagreement signatures are actually going to be joining this fight. but just to keep the peace in there for in the meantime, i still like this is where it's been on the media, but on the ground for people before differently, they can still hear gunshots. the woke up, going to show up this morning as well. also we have been hearing about basic essentials, things like food and medicine. what is the status on getting those resupplied to people? citizens who really need it? it's, it's getting worse. it's getting really worse. and also a new phenomenon started on the ground due to necessity. people are actually
9:16 am
stealing and looking from shops and a half because they didn't have anything. there is no, no the government not doing anything. international aid agencies are not really on the ground yet. so they left to is what they had. and most people are like, you see on the report you sent, the areas are free at those. i like the upper and kind of flow upper areas. but if you go down to my, you'll to collateral around the edges of the city. people have nothing of the speak to people yesterday on facebook, where with your money you can find bread with your money, you can find out lentils, or anything that can help the people in the house to eat. so the situation is dire, and those people who are talking about they can't leave,
9:17 am
they don't let him have the means to leave them. so they're going to be trapped there between the war and the hunger, and also the, the local water drinking water in costume. and here are some other stories making news around the world. hope francis has embarked on a 3 day trip to hungry, where he will meet with prime minister victor bon and ukrainian refugees, that you are at odds over hungry anti migration policies. more than a 1000000 ukrainians are believed to have crossed the border into hungry since the beginning of the war. for you as vice president mike pence has testified in front of a grand jury investigating former president donald trump. the prob is looking into trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. trump's lawyers tried but failed to block pence. his appearance. when did you in authority than indonesia say that 11 people died when

several politicians joined the protest to discuss which options are on the table, tells you what you're missing. believe we need to consider which sanctions we can expand. also, in my view that that includes listing the revolutionary guards as a terrorist organization to walk on is up soon on the missing. and we have to consider how we can also put more of a stop to the expanded structures of this regime here in europe. one does who seems written in oil premier? i know how to people can, if this, we know, uranian security services are also active here. we know that uranian exile community is also in danger. here in germany, in the far off for the protest as he and berlin, the governments, everything is not enough. and an, an interview with d. w. sham. at starter, told us she feels the same. we need our governments to show where they are. red line is when their citizens objected and taken their and tortured, put through sham trails and about to be executed. what are they willing to do when are they gonna stop dealing with this regime and treating them like business
