ah ah ah ah, this is dw news live from berlin, russian cruise missiles and drones hit targets across ukraine. at least 12 people are reported dead and strikes in several cities overnight. the attacks coming as keith prepares, a counter offensive, but will new weapons and western training be enough. also coming up, extending
10:01 am
a fragile cease fire in sue down. the truth has been sporadically broken over the last 3 days, but is supposed to continue through the weekend. thousands are trying to evacuate, and much needed. supplies are trickling in. plus hope. francis sets off on a 3 day visit to hungary where he is expected to outline a vision for europe in the context of russia's invasion of ukraine. and in the most exciting buddhist legal race in over a decade will dorm and finally lit the trophy. they can go for points ahead of byron munich tonight with the wind. ah, i'm sarah kelly. welcome to the program. we begin in ukraine where russian missiles had, and drone strikes, have hit several ukrainian cities overnight killing at least 12 civilians are live
10:02 am
pictures right there. a residential building was hit in mon, 200 kilometers south of the capital. chief authorities also reporting deaths in the eastern city of ne pro where they say that a woman and a young child were killed. d. w, correspond at nick connelly joins me from keith. tell us a little bit more about these latest attacks neck. well, sarah, in on one, it seems like those kelsey figures are set to rise further. still, they're still going through those ruins. we understand that more than a 100 people lived in the part of that high rise block that was hit. and there are reports, dozens, people, already rescued, but still many unaccounted for. in the pros, you also mentioned to casualties that his 100 comments is that way. so these were pretty spread, it here was also attacked will be, it's better protected. and all those missiles were shot down, some damage to the power supplies in pots of kia because of debris falling down from rockets that have been utilized by the ukraine defenses. this comes as
10:03 am
a big shock basically they haven't been massive kind of rocket attacks far away from the front lines for more than a month now. and i think people had got used to sleeping in their beds and not really look at their phones. not really listening out for those warnings. and this is of say, very brutal minded, that this is still very much a place where people are vulnerable, sleeping at night in their homes, are watching those rescue workers right now. nick, as, as they, as they work through the rubble of one of those buildings. do we know how well prep ukraine's air defense systems are right now? well, certainly, they have become a lot stronger over this, more than a year of war. we understand from the ukraine military, that 21 of 23 russian cruise missiles were shot down. think those figures might still change and this was so the question of russian drones, but this is a vast country. it's more than 1500 kilometers a wide from east to west. and even with all the kind of air defenses in the world, you're never going be able to protect all of the church all the time. key of
10:04 am
certain, he feels a lot safer and seems to be able to knock a lot more of those russian targets out of the sky. we've had news today of a 2nd unit of those us patriot systems. now operational on the ground here in ukraine. but it's also important, says the munitions for these systems are incredibly expensive and very slow the produce. so even if the systems exist, the cranes really haven't to make a choice. every time do we use what, what pressure supplies? we have to try, neutralize these rockets, which we just have to let them fly past us because we might need those munitions in the future. and connelly and keith, thank you. and ukraine and the western world have been waiting for months for ukraine to begin a counter offensive against entrench russian forces in the eastern part of the country. but the challenges for ukrainian troops are immense, as they take on a much bigger military force. our next report looks at what it will take to win back territory and why it's taking so long to prepare draining near the
10:05 am
front. these ukrainian soldiers are getting ready for the big battle to come. millennium with the new streaming boat is gone, more or less. ok with some difficulty. so we will work on this and get rid of the problems. was the water that we found, the minds of we will rehearse again. and then it will be fine before with never local. getting ukraine's forces ready has been no small undertaking. many of the countries most experienced soldiers have died or been wounded in over a year of grinding combat with russian forces. that means the counter offensive will also rely on fresh recruits who haven't seen battle. and there's another big problem. more than the women earn you the food at the moment, there is a significant ammunition shortage of them. we lack high explosive, incendiary shells on. so tanks and artillery are unable to work effectively with
10:06 am
high explosives. shells have a much more destructive power and the damage radius. is much bigger than armor piercing shell's not i do, but a vineyard, whooshing years recommended you only been filling the ammunition gap will be key and will take time. but munition is just one part of a much bigger and more complex machine. the ukrainians must coordinate tanks, infantry artillery air power, and engineers relying on communications and quick decision making. but they're up against considerable obstacles. if, as expected, ukraine pushes to the south to cut russian held territory and half, they have to cross the denise bro river. they'll face mine fields and concrete obstacles known as devils teeth, and that's before they reach rush and trenches shown here in satellite pictures. while the russians will likely be shooting at the ukrainians the whole time. that kind of push requires equipment and may explain the longer than expected build up
10:07 am
to the counter offensive is la maya. they've really been arming that military from the ground up. so originally it was anti tank guided missiles. then it was hillary, then it was infantry fighting vehicles, then it was tanks. your listeners, remember you view the story, will remember all the tanks, the goal plays the beginning, the year. and so at each stage, ukraine receives what it wants and look, i would do exactly the same thing. it's always in that position. and then it asks for the next level of support. the problem for ukraine is that western support is not likely to last forever. the spring counter offensive, which may end up happening in the summer, has to show concrete games to keep ukraine's backers happy and to keep the weapons coming. and earlier i spoke with marina myron, of the defend studies department at king's college london and asked her what the key challenges would be for ukrainian soldiers during the coming offensive. there
10:08 am
are quite a few challenges and one of the challenges is obviously the weather. so it's very difficult to time the contra offensive. aside from that, we have also heard that the ukranian brigades that are supposed to be used for this counter offensive. i'm not ready. so 3 of the brigades will be ready some time in me, which gives the russians enough time to prepare and also gives out important information on the potential contra offensive. and, you know, apart from the fact that old equipment has allegedly arrived in ukraine, the ukrainian armed forces still have to solve the logistical problems. because depending on where they want to conduct the contra offense of and it better be a surprise for the russians who are prepared, they've been preparing defences since november. so since a time general survey can to charge of the so called special military operation,
10:09 am
the russians have prepared the actual on defenses as we have heard in the report. and this will be very difficult for the spring into breakthrough. so the idea is to stop them in their tracks. then we have the issue of conducting combined arms operations, which are very difficult in terms of maneuver in terms of logistics. you have to have a good leadership. and the question, as despite all the western equipment that has arrived and even if the ukrainians consoles logistical problems without the russians actually the targeting western equipments, the equipment actually arrives on the front lines where the contra offensive is supposed to take place. can the ukrainians master this very, very complex operation, given all the pressure that is currently coming from the political leadership of ukraine as well as kind of international audience who are waiting for the bringing forces to deliver. so they have new equipment, they have fresh recruit to be used and they have
10:10 am
a very complex operation and they know that the russians are ready for that. can they master at you think, i mean, because the ukrainians for their part, they say that they have trained these 9 brigades for a counter offensive. and what are we talking about here? concretely? i mean, it's this now a tactical shift in the way that this war has been, has been fought. well, that's a great question. i guess everybody wants to know if they can master it and that will depend not only on skill, it will depend on manufacturers. it will depend on where the contra fence, if they explain what the russians do about it, because the russians we have seen have started using more, a b, a sion. so for the ukrainians it will be difficult to coordinate the tanks and mechanized infantry and cold air support. and you know, the brigades have been prepared that is true, but have se operated together in the theater using this new equipment as they have
10:11 am
just stated. so it will definitely be a challenge, and besides, we don't know because the media is covering possible points of attack. and of course the russians listening. so for ukraine, what will be important is to make sure to trick the russians into thinking they are attacking somewhere else. in order to be exploits as long front line and use possibly battle reconnaissance in order to see where the defenses are, their weakest and try their marina, myron. thank you so much for joining us to share that expertise. joining us from king's college in london, we appreciate it. thank you for having me. here are some other stories making news around the world. former us vice president mike pence has testified in front of a grand jury investigating former president donald trump. the grand jury is looking into trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election

a fragile truce for another 72 hours. but there has been more fighting in the capital hearted and other areas. hundreds of people have been killed in the to be conflict. thousands of sudanese civilians are still trying to escape. many who are unable to leave are short of vital supplies. a growing number of countries are evacuating their diplomats and nationals as foreigners, head out millions of sudanese without the advantage of foreign citizenship are left to fend for themselves. grabbing whatever they can to stock up on vidal supplies that are running out across the country. murphy, martin, mom, there are no supplies, we're not receiving any new goods. no we, there's nothing coming in and any supply that is exhausted, we cannot replace it. we hope that god will help the people here for love, a brother in a not shops and houses are being rated by armed groups. for those who want to

flee. one way out is through this land border crossing into egypt. but the path to that northern border from major cities like cartoon, and only mon, is long and dangerous. and fuel is scarce. a load though we need fuel. we have been here for 3 days tuesday, wednesday entered i thursday. we don't know the gas station will open on october on us as he can see. they opened the station until 2 or 3 cars and then they close it laquata we sent the letting a fellow and without that fuel to escape the violence. those who live here must remain hoping the warring factions can be convinced to stop shooting. earlier i spoke with sudanese journalist al sanusi adam. he is following the developments in sudan from nairobi and he told me about the fighting taking place despite the extended truce. yes, if i can stay on going in
10:15 am
a for the fact that the armed grew up in there for me now. yes of that week that they are going to put together a joint arm for me to stop the fighting in was that for so finally the, the lease agreement signatures are actually going to be joining this fight. but just to keep the peace in there for in the meantime, i still like this is where it's been on the media, but on the ground, people report differently. they can still hear gunshots, the work of going to show up this morning as well. also we have been hearing about basic essentials, things like food and medicine. what is the status on getting those re supplied to people? citizens who really need it?
10:16 am
it's, it's getting worse. it's getting really worse. and also a new phenomenon started on the ground due to necessity. people are actually stealing and looking from shops and a half because they didn't have anything. there is no, no the government not doing anything. international aid agencies are not really on the ground yet. so they left to is what they had, and most people are like, absolute will see on the report you sent, the areas are free at those. i like the upper and kind of low upper areas. but if you go down to my, you'll to collateral around the edges of the city. people have nothing of the speech to people yesterday on facebook, where with your money you can find fred with your money, you can find

a lentils or anything that can help the people in the house to eat. so the situation is dire, and those people who are talking about they can't leave, they don't let him have the means to leave them. so they're going to be trapped there between the war and the hunger, and also the, the local water drinking water in costume. all right, and that was also knows he adam who is in the kenyan capital nairobi following developments in sudan. pope francis has arrived in hungary. it is the pontiff 1st trip to the country which shares a border with ukraine. francis plans a 3 day visit to be focused in great part on the war in ukraine. he'll be meeting with some of the 1000000 plus ukrainian refugees believe to have crossed into hungry since the beginning of the war. you're looking at pictures there from the

a crucial role in whether air to one is able to stand power. germany is home to more than 3000000 people of turkish descent. around half of them hold a turkish passport and have the right to vote there during the last elections in 2018, 2 thirds of german turks voted for irwin and his a k p party. many say he's modernized the country improving its health system and infrastructure. as of alman are they are sure i live in germany hot here. if you go to the emergency room of the hospital, you have to wait for up to 6 hours. that's not the case in turkey. my children, for example, can go to a public hospital. they're free of charge simply because they have a turkish passport, and other one has also built so many bridges and roads. of course no one is perfect, but i still believe the a k pull is the best option, especially if you compare it to the other parties. and i've been through alarm 30, but i can still remember what turkey was like before the a k. p took over the streets,

were paul told everything was 30 there will power cuts. and if there was an earthquake, the houses color held. okay, that has happened again, but i remember how bad it used to be up to the other pulse suggests that an err to one victory is far from certain this time around. however, the current president still gone as a lot of support among german tax. many of whom admire his leadership style with the hobby lee jordan. i think there is one decisive element. well, that was a little, it's the successfully conveyed image of a strong nation were led by a strong man. good god in this ed to wand and his party have managed to present him at once as a man who defends the turkish migrant community in germany. it's monkey who stands up for their rights. both cars and speaks up against injustices here accrued along with should we michigan food film. so but this view is not shared by many of those

but even the biggest thought and famel admit they are sometimes quite inconsistent . ah, yes, they would very well last weekend, but the week before that they drew with stuttgart. we're down near the bottom and, and the last against buying a few weeks back. so that could still be a twist that could still be a sting in the tail. but hey, everyone's talking about gym or football. everyone's talking about this title race so that at least makes it extra exciting. the title race in italy in france and spain is pretty much over in england. it looks like much to city are going to win again. but in germany we have no idea, so the focus is on the bonuses. and i think even bion after these 10 years of championships are probably thinking well, at least we've got a bit of competition. now, why has byron sees and is now stag? meantime? if they lose the title, they are pretty much the architects of their own downfall. if you think at the start of the season, they lost robert lemon dusky to barcelona. this was a man who scored 40 goals a season, and they decided not to replace it. he said it's
10:26 am
a sort of share the goals around it hasn't really worked. they've got veteran max into promoting, playing up front who have one for 3, was sort of over really. and also the idea to sac union now goes one last month as coach replacing with thomas local. yeah, things weren't going wonderfully well. but the got worse since they made the change . so i think if they don't win the title ship executive oliver. com and sporting that direct to hatton, sally hemmings, which are in big trouble. i think one or both could end up being fired database mac meadows. thank you so much. you're watching t w news. here's a quick reminder of the top stories that we've been following for you and ukraine. at least 12 civilians were killed when russia launched missiles strikes over night . several cities were head including women, were rescuers are digging through that rubble of residential buildings. those are live pictures that you are washing right now, as well as a woman and her young child were reportedly killed in the pro coming up
