it's something that really is price in mental health, gives me known to what i do. the trio combating, sheeting dealings. starts april 29th on d, w. ah ah, this is d w. news coming to you live from berlin. russian cruise missiles and drones hit targets across you crate. at least 14 people are reported dead and overnight strikes on a number of cities. the attacks come as key a prepares, a counter offensive, hoping that new western weapons will help push the russians. also coming up hope

francis takes a 3 day visit to hungary. he's meeting prime minister victor or bon with whom he's been at odds of or migration issues. the war in neighboring ukraine is also under heavy focus on the positive strength, plus extending a fragile cease fire incident. the truce has been sporadically broken over the last 3 days, but it's supposed to continue through the weekend and is being billed as most exciting buddhist league. a race in over a decade will door and finally lift the trophy. they can go for points ahead of by a munich to night with a wind. ah . hello, i'm terry martin. good to have you with us. we begin in ukraine where russian missile and drones strikes have hit several ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least 14 civilians. a residential building was hit in mon,
2:02 pm
200 kilometers south of the capital. kia authorities also reported deaths in the eastern city of ne pro, where they say a woman and a young child were killed. the biggest strike, russia has launched in ukraine in weeks. earlier, i spoke to d. w correspondent, nick conley in key. if i asked him about those latest attacks. so, terry, the late report, camino 14 fatalities in woman there. extraordinary scenes of the operation going on there to try to find more people under those ruins. we understand. well, the 100 people lived in the section of the apartment block that 9 story block that was hit. that was the epicenter of that strike. as you mentioned, there was an approach to fatalities. this is really shocking, after basically the best part of 2 months where there were no attacks fall from the front lines where cities like key of and women could more or less sleep quite sleep
2:03 pm
. com people now, once again confronted with this very dangerous reality that these air raid sirens have to be taken seriously. what do we know, nick, about how well equipped ukraine's air defense systems. all right, now we'll have different come a long way since the beginning of this war. we've heard from the cream of stay. they say that 21 of 23 russian cruise missiles were shot down. they haven't spoken yet quite how many russian drones were sent this way last night. but this is a vast country. it's more than one 100000 kilometers from east to west and almost 1000 north to south. there's never going to be 100 percent security especially gets ballistic missiles, which slide and faster and more predictably than cruise missiles. in the case of tonight's loss, let's attack, we've heard that the russian sent those missiles in very low, and that they changed. they call several times make it more difficult to try and shoot them down, and often they fly so low that when you do try shoot them down the debris then causes extensive damage to civilians around them. and i think there is
2:04 pm
a real sense here that you crank, given its position, it's very long, bored with russia is just uniquely vulnerable. what about the timing of these attacks? nick, why is russia on seeing these missiles and drones now? well, some of this is basically because they can, it seems like really they are running out of their stocks. they're basically sending missiles straight from the factories to the front lines. and that now basically having used a lot of missiles up last autumn, the beginning of this year, they had to wait a bit to really restock. and also this is being seen as an attempt patient to create panic and chaos among ukraine civilians. to put pressure on ukraine's government to come to the negotiating table and come some kind of temporary deal on russia's terms. that's not something that ukrainian public opinion is open to yet. but i guess the expectation is in moscow that increasingly kind of random attacks, really until it might cause that kind of change of mood. but it's also interesting if you kind of look how this is actually playing your cancer productively for
2:05 pm
russia. basically, it seems like, you know, as soon as interests in the west, outside in this war, starts to dip and b willingness to help ukraine dips then it russia hoops, not really in its own interest, thought bombing civilian targets again. and once again, this is on the front pages of all the world media. and once again, the willingness to help you change their so that seems like quite a counterproductive stretchy if you look at the bigger picture and support for you . great. nick, thank you very much. as always, our correspondent nick connelly there in the ukrainian capital key. hope francis is on his 1st official trip to hungary. pontiff landed in the capital, budapest and has just held talks with prime minister victor or been in a speech to government leaders. including urban, he warned, a rising nationalism in europe. he added that, accepting migrants across the continent would be a true sign of christianity. they voted frances also urged a rejection of self referential forms of populism and strictly nationalist interest
2:06 pm
in yam, oak, ellen of wood. earlier i was joined by a from budapest by just and spike. he's the hungry, corresponded for the associated press. i asked him what the pope and hungry is prime minister disgust in their meeting. we don't know exactly what the, what the 2 leaders talked about. what we do know are the things that francis mentioned in a speech that he just gave a couple of minutes ago. after his meeting with the political leaders, he talked about the rise of nationalism in europe and how europe had been regressing toward a sort of adolescent belligerence as he put it, an obvious reference to the war and ukraine. and he urged european leaders to pursue policies that are attentive, but more to the poor, more to the individuals of the future, and not merely to power profit and present prospects. so in his speech, he did make references to some of the points of contention that he has with what bands government concerning the war and also concerning treatment of minorities and treatment, refugees and migrants. so you mentioned some points of contention there between the
2:07 pm
pope and or but this is francis's 1st official visit hungry since you became pope 10 years ago. why is he making this trip now? i think that francis wanted to make an appearance in this part of europe. this is the closest that he'll ever have traveled to, to the front lines of the war and ukraine and from his previous statements and positions that he's taken on the war. it's obvious that he's working for a peaceful solution to the conflict. he's really shown a lot of solidarity with ukraine and condemned russia for its invasion. but i think you might see in prime minister victor or been somebody who himself says that he's pushing for peace in the conflict, but it's doing it in a different way. he's been really lukewarm and his support for his neighbor ukraine . he's refused to send weapons to key if he's gotten in the way of you efforts to provide money to ukraine and also threatened to veto sanctions on moscow. so i
2:08 pm
think maybe francis sees a way to come here and try to sort of turn the tide on what many leaders in the european union considered to be, you know, one of the last pulled out who are kind of holding up russian interest in a way in this conflict in the, in the hungarian government. so the pope is in hungary, he's met with the countries political leaders. what else is the pope planning to do while he's there? justin? he's got a number of things on his agenda, which really kind of speak to priorities. he'll be meeting with refugees from ukraine, but also refugees from afghanistan, iraq, sudan, and other countries. he also plans to meet with people living in poverty with young people with a disabled showing you know, his spirit of charity and looking out for the, for the underdogs for the marginalized. and he'll also be meeting with other religious leaders as well at a catholic university here in hungary. so kind of par for the course, but also,
2:09 pm
you know, it says a lot, i think about his, about his priorities and sending a message also to all of europe into the gary and government that he is a pope who is going to stand up for the marginalized and in a way, urging gary and government as well to change its positions on the marginalized on migrants on refugees and on the l. g. b, t, q, community as well. just in thank you very much for your insights. that was the a piece just and spike in budapest, l to sedan and the army and the rival paramilitary group. the rapids support forces have agreed to extend a fragile truce for another 72 hours. but there's been more fighting in the capital cartoon and other areas. despite the truth, hundreds of people have been killed in the 2 week conflict. thousands of sudanese billions are still trying to escape many who are unable to leave or short of vital supplies. a growing number of countries are evacuating their diplomats and nationals. ah,
