hope francis makes a 3 day visit to hungary. he's meeting prime minister victor or bun, with whom he's at all, it's over migration issues. the war in neighboring ukraine is also under heavy focus on the positive trip and is being billed as the most exciting buddhist, like a race and over a decade will doorbell and finally lift the trophy. they can go for points ahead in the standings with the wind to none. ah hello m terry martin. good to have you with us. russian miss ireland. drone strikes have hit several ukrainian cities killing at least 17 civilians. they were the biggest russian strikes in weeks. one of the cities targeted was mon, 200 kilometers south of keith, where people were picking up the pieces after 2 missiles destroyed an apartment block. 6 2 they're still in shock. after
3:02 pm
russian missiles destroyed their homes in the early hours. at 1st, all the glass flew out. everything flew out, even the chandler fell. everything was covered in glass, and then there was an explosion and the car started exploding. we barely found our things and ran out, and then everyone started arriving. several buildings were hit, one completely destroyed what you, you must hopefully give late. give them, i know we heard the sound of a plane taking off fiscal in that 10 minutes later very there was an explosion really there. sure. at 1st i was confused. and then there was a 2nd explosion. enough glass flew towards us. yet i quickly covered myself with a blanket and asked my husband if he was still alive or not the way she miserably moved up through the window. we could see everything was on fire already. it's hard
3:03 pm
to find words to describe it to you. after that, we got it our things and went outside. this room of his cell is bad. oh, emergency services managed to rescue several people from the rubble. but the attack left many injured, and at least 10 dead. among them, 2 children, presidency lensky, called the attack a night of terror and condemned to targeting civilians, ukrainian forces, say russia launch $23.00 missiles on the cities of women on nipper, where a woman and her child died. and in the key of region where an apartment was hit, ukraine says it intercepted all but 2 of the missiles to russian drones are reportedly also taken down. the attacks were the latest in a series by russia in recent days. meanwhile, ukrainian forces are wrapping up preparations for a spring counter offensive. c w is nick conley explained. what leads russia to
3:04 pm
attack civilian targets in ukraine and the consequences such attacks have for the war with some of this is basically because they can, it seems like really they all running out of their stocks. they basically sending missiles straight from the factories to the front lines and that now basically having used a lot of missiles up last autumn, the beginning of this year they had to wait a bit to really restock. and also this is being seen as an attempt patient to create panic and chaos among ukraine civilians. to put pressure on ukraine's government to come to negotiating table and come some kind of temporary deal on russia's terms. that's not something that ukraine public opinion is open to yet, but i guess the expectation is in moscow that increasingly kind of random attacks us really and how it might cause that kind of change of mood. but it's also interesting if you kind of look how this is actually playing your cancer productively for russia. basically, it seems like, you know, as soon as interests in the west, outside in this war, starts to dip and the willingness to help ukraine tips then it russia,
3:05 pm
not really in its own interests, thoughts, bombing civilian targets again. and once again, this is on the front pages of old world media, and once again, the willingness to help you change their so that seems like quite a counterproductive strategy if you look at the bigger picture and support you claim. to w as nick conley there in key if well, pope francis is making his 1st official trip to hungary speaking to government leaders in budapest, a warned against rising nationalism in europe. the positive said that accepting migrants across the continent would be a christian virtue. francis also urged rejection of what he called self referential populace. he included earlier, i was joined from budapest by justin spy keys, the hungry correspondent for the associated press. i asked him, what the pope and hungry, prime minister disgust in their meeting. we don't know exactly what the, what the 2 leaders talked about. what we do know are the things that francis mentioned in a speech that he just gave
3:06 pm
a couple of minutes ago. after his meeting with the political leaders, he talked about the rise of nationalism in europe and how your it had been regressing toward a sort of adolescent belligerence as he put it, an obvious reference to the war and ukraine. and he urged european leaders to pursue policies that are attentive, but more to the poor, more to the individuals of the future, and not merely to power profit and present prospects. so in his speech, he did make references to some of the points of contention that he has with what bands government concerning the war and also concerning treatment of minorities and treatment, refugees and migrants. so you mentioned some points of contention there between the pope and are but this is francis's 1st official visit hungry since you became pope 10 years ago. why is he making this trip now? i think that francis wanted to make an appearance in this part of europe. this is the closest that he'll ever have traveled to,
3:07 pm
to the front lines of the war and ukraine and from his previous statements and positions that he's taken on the war. it's obvious that he's working for a peaceful solution to the conflict. he's really shown a lot of solidarity with ukraine and condemned russia for its invasion. but i think you might see in prime minister victor or been somebody who himself says that he's pushing for peace in the conflict, but as doing it in a different way. he's been really lukewarm and his support for his neighbor ukraine . he's refused to send weapons to key if he's gotten in the way of you efforts to provide money to ukraine and also threatened to veto sanctions on moscow. so i think maybe francis sees a way to come here and try to sort of turn the tide on what many leaders in the european union considered to be, you know, one of the last pulled out who are kind of holding up russian interests in a way in this conflict in the, in the hungarian government. so the pope is in hungry. he's met with the countries political leaders. what else is the pope planning to do while he's there? justin?
3:08 pm
he's got a number of things on his agenda, which really kind of speak to his priorities. they'll be meeting with refugees from ukraine, but also refugees from afghanistan, iraq, sudan, and other countries. he also plans to meet with people living in poverty with young people with a disabled showing you know, his spirit of charity and looking out for the, for the underdogs for the marginalized. and he'll also be meeting with other religious leaders as well. at a catholic university here in hungary, so kind of par for the course. but also, you know, it says a lot, i think about his, about his priorities and sending a message also to all of europe into the hungarian government. that he is a pope who is going to stand up for the marginalized and in a way, urging longer in government as well to change its positions on the marginalized on migrants on refugees and on the l. g, b, t, q, community as well. just in thank you very much for your insights. that was the
