9:00 pm
ah ah ah ah, this is dw news, live it from berlin tonight, russia accusing ukraine of attempting to assassinate president putin at home. these images are said to show the moment that a drone exploded over the kremlin in the heart of moscow last night. keith has denied any involved, also coming up a school shooting that has shocked the serbian police in belgrade. have arrested
9:01 pm
a 13 year old boy suspected of killing at least 8 children and a security guard. and on this world press freedom day will take you've been, so i would have wishes, few remaining independent media outs. and as fighting in sudan continues, hundreds of thousands are looking for any way to get out of the country. ah, i bri. gov. it's good to have you with us tonight. russia says it foiled an overnight drawn attack on the kremlin. it's pointing the finger at ukraine accusing key, but attempting to assassinate president vladimir putin. the kremlin is calling the alleged attack a terrorist act, and says that russia is reserving the right to retaliate. keith had strongly denied any involvement, a senior advisor to ukraine's president lensky. is war that moscow could use the
9:02 pm
claim to launch what he called a large scale terrorist provocation against ukraine. ah, this footage circulating on russian telegram channels shows the alleged overnight attack and smoke rising above the main kremlin palace. there has been no independent verification of this footage, but russia accuses ukraine of trying to assassinate putin. ukrainian president volota may zalinski denied any involvement in the alleged incident. oh, we don't attack fortune or moscow. i'll we fly to home on our territory when defending our will just sit it. we don't have, you know enough weapons for these. that's why we don't use it any anywhere for,
9:03 pm
for us. that is a deficit. the weight we cons banded, and we didn't attack pu tim. we leave it to tribunal on how it's going in, washington. u. s. secretary of state antony blinkin cast doubt on the kremlin allegations. these are decisions for ukraine's. i've see the reports. i can't turn in any way validate them. we simply, we simply don't know a 2nd i would take anything coming out of the kremlin with a very large shaker salt. so let's see. ah, we'll see what, what, what the facts are. i'm and it's, it's really hard to comment or speculate on this without really, really knowing what the facts are. moscow has threatened to retaliate against ukraine, making residents of keith, worried for their safety. when it was a church, they might try attacking the strategic objects. your decisions are made in key. if we actually did my chair, let's let them his eyes. again,
9:04 pm
we need to remain in safety and take care of ourselves and our loved ones with semi linux. this have, at least for now putin remains safe. moscow announced that he will take part in a shed ewald world war to victory day parade on red square. next week was got more of this now, from our correspondence, the connelly in the ukrainian capital engine of her pocket in riga, you may remember western authorities shut down our moscow office. riga is the temporary homes both of you. it's good to see you there. let me start with you, i'm president. zalinski is denial. it couldn't be any clear but a cynic or perhaps a russian might say, well, he would say that whitney that obviously makes a lot of sense. but equally, when you look at previous attacks by drones on russian soil attacks that most pundits experts say are very lucky to be ukrainian ones present. lensky doesn't
9:05 pm
come out with these kinds of claims and come out with these kinds of announcements to the world basically. and if it were then late approved, these were indeed ukrainian text that would be very, very embarrassing and very bad for his credibility, which he desperately needs to get weapons and other western support. in the past we've seen 2nd or 3rd echelon, grand officials being wheeled out to kind of say no, that wasn't us. gov and then you know, kind of disappear again into the isa. i think there is a real worry hearing here that if lots of people in europe who are maybe worried about escalation, worried about supplying ukraine with alms, were to believe that this was a ukrainian attack on the kremlin, on the center of russian power. that they might pull back and say this is getting too dangerous. this is, you know, there is risk of contagion. hey, we need to put the brake on support for ukraine. and nick, we know that john attacks on russian infrastructure close to you grade. they have become more frequent. so regardless of the official denials is the presumption tonight that keith is behind them and,
9:06 pm
and why are we seeing this increase in attacks? i think 1st, it's important to distinguish between attacks that are happening pretty close to ukraine borders or in russian occupied crimea that are feasible, logistically, and that are doable with relatively simple means. important. state western countries have been ukraine from using the weapons they supply against russia proper rather than russia occupied ukraine. we've seen attacks in thrust posting attacks on russian or facilities just near crimea. recently. that all makes sense also in terms of preparing ukraine's expected counter offensive. it would be pretty extraordinary if ukraine were able to send a drone, 67800 kilometers from ukrainian hell, tertiary to the center of moscow. with all those russian anti across anti drone systems on the roof of moscow buildings unable to stop it. i think potentially most expert thing, if they still turn out to be true, it's more likely that this is a drone that will be lot closer to the criminal, potentially by opposition groups potentially with some kind of coordination with
9:07 pm
ukraine, but the ukraine government would take the risk and be be able to do this. i think that still seems pretty far fetched. ok jennifer, let's try to get the eagle didn't. but from russia, what do we know about russians claims tonight? well, kremlin spokesperson. dmitri pasco, of called it a planned terrorist attack with the aim to take vladimir putin life. so targeting the president's residency in the kremlin. but according to him, putting was not present in the kremlin, but worked from the of a value of the russian investigative committee is now likely to lounge an investigation on terrorism. and of course, he blamed ukraine and key for this attack. according to the kremlin st press statement, quote, the russian side reserves the right to retaliate when and where it sees fit, unquote. but how exactly this retaliation could look like? well, he did not specify bent. it's not only the kremlin russian deputies and propagandists openly and loudly called for strikes on key if and even ukraine's president lensky
9:08 pm
is residence. jennifer, the video that we've seen image shows a drone exploding over the crib, wouldn't be there are bound to be questions about whether this alleged attack was organized within russia or were abroad, or even possibly staged by russia itself. of course, there will be questions, especially because of the frequency of drone attacks or explosions in the last month, weeks, or even days counting this alleged attack on the kremlin. there were 9 drone attacks in total so far. so we also have to keep in mind that the information we're getting in the reports we getting are coming from russian state media. they have not been confirmed by western media or experts. the only clear statement we have so far comes from the criminal itself and from ukraine, which vehemently denies being invoked. of course, there is the possibility of russia having staged this attack, trying to use this to legitimize to warn you crate, especially because they waited
9:09 pm
a whole day before publishing the food is also on may, 9th, there will be a parade held on the red square to celebrate rush us victory in the world war 2. so what better timing to evoke? more patriotic feelings in russian society than showing them that the enemy is here almost at their doorstep in the kremlin. jennifer parker in regard to connelly in key to both of you. thank you. well, how plausible is a drone attack on the kremlin? let's go now to dr. kerry chavez, a political scientist from texas tech university, and a research fellow with the modern war institute at west point. and she writes about the use of military and commercial drones in the war in ukraine, georgia. tonight from lubbock, texas is good to have you with this doctor chavez. i mean, what was your reaction to this video coming that apparently shows a drawn exporting over the kremlin. thank you for having me on and
9:10 pm
think that even in such a brief video, there's a lot of indications about the capacity involved in this attack that essentially might give us clues as to what's going on and any overall it suggests that there's about moderate capacity there are some aspects here that appear unsophisticated by some that appear more advanced, which means that it's certainly could have been the ukranian army or a rogue ukrainian actor or russian actor of lesser capacity. and the germans appear to be smaller, fixed wing drones. they, i've seen some label than as make shifts that they seem to comport with ukraine's own u. j. 20 to potentially a chinese major that ukraine possesses. and the war had small and certainly a sparse explosive payload. so i think that it suggested it might be a, a less sophisticated attack. and what do we know then? what can you tell us about russia's, a drone defense capabilities, a, b, a?
9:11 pm
is it possible for a drone to evade russian radar in the heart of moscow? yes, there is missile defense systems that cover moscow. however, there are gaps. and in fact, in january, russia installed additional defense system with patients and longer signals that measure with forest nature of her inheritance. a doctor's office, i think. okay, i think you have someone call you there. i think they, they hung up though. is it possible? nancy, is it possible for a drone of this size to fly from outside russian territory? i think we're talking about what it would be 300 miles from the ukranian border to moscow. i mean, to drones make that distance under the radar?
9:12 pm
absolutely. is technically feasible that a ukrainian drone could fly from the territory of ukraine to moscow. the 2 drones that i cited just a moment ago, the potentially the chinese made one or the ukrainian indigenous produced one have ranges of about 800-2000 kilometers. so they are a long endurance on longer range platforms. so it's technically feasible, and i think that's exactly why russia has been articulating these intentions to strengthen their existing defences. i even heard after today's attack, this summer, citing the insulation of an invisible dome and all their strategic military and civilian locations in the near future. so it's possible it's, it's less likely that this was manually operated from the vicinity of moscow. course, if it's not ukrainian bennett's, it's possibly a simpler platform that was launched in a shorter range. but all of those are possible, technically,
9:13 pm
technically. and of course the questions people want to know still unanswered to not start to carry chavez. joining us tonight from lubbock, texas, we appreciate your time and your valuable insight doctor. thank you. thank you. are, let's take a look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world . ukraine says at least 18 people have been killed in washing strikes on the harrison region. 46, others have been wounded. a hyper market and a train station in harrison city were shelled. some of the victims had been shopping for supplies ahead of a 3 day walk down, ordered by authorities, which they say would enable them to root out fro russians fall off a bell. a routine journalist, an activist, has been sentenced to 8 years in prison, includes the plotting unrest and planning to seize power. roman writer with shaving machine was arrested on may 2021. when his why an air flight was forced to land in mince, ran a telegram news channel use. i protesters opposing, alexander lucas,

she goes regime and gulliver, nurse police in survey of say that they've arrested a 13 year old boy in connection with a shooting rampage at a school in the capitol, belgrade, 8 children and a security guard were killed. believe say, the attack was meticulously planned ah, arrested in the middle of the school yard. just a couple of hours earlier, the alleged attacker walked into his own high school pen to start shooting. the students head the terrifying shots from inside their classrooms. and all it apparently i was downstairs, we had sports class downstairs. i was able to hear the shooting nap. it was non stop. it was not light, one shot at a time. it was shooting without stopping. i didn't know what was happening. we were

receiving some messages on the phone, some kids from the 7th grade class, when not replying, he said we were in real fear. residents in the central district of belgrade, are shocked by what the man is calling a huge tragedy. has put his try to piece together what could have motivated to teenager. they say that the accused boy had a detail shooting plan. they is the, the boy, as he stated himself, when he planned to carry out this act furiously. this was a list of the children he planned to kill your plan, you know, the liquidity samira you. he himself drew the plans of the school entrance and exit of which was found on his writing desk. look, as he said himself here. he said priority target. but he only took me a minute. oh dear, has it been

a moss shooting of this magnitude indicates. authorities have announced p days off national morning. and our correspondent, he droves very joins us from outside the school there. in belgrade he drove the president, we understand said that the, the shooter was going to be placed in a psychiatric institution. and what more did he say? while yahoo was placed already and checking to be because minor and long on a full day left the not for you to do that happen in the last few years. the i had never been outside of the

rare thing like that where you measures for more security hold something you're all going from all of the we mass shootings in serbia are extremely rare. but the the presence of guns is not experts. i've been warning for years about the hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons and circulating since the balkan wars of the 1990. i mean how big of a problem is this work not problem kill this moment although. busy in the world. but this is the last meal.
9:18 pm
many of them are there, but we didn't have also problems. all you joe terry with the latest tonight in belgrade. you joe. thank you. a police in italy and here in germany have arrested dozens of suspects in a crackdown on the italian mafia group. the drawn, gather, they're accused of drug smuggling, money laundering and fraud. similar raids are being carried out in other european countries. authorities are calling if the largest ever operation against the mafia, german police getting ready to storm a suspects house or just one of dozens of arrests across the country. here in munich, this car wash was busted for a legend,
9:19 pm
money laundering. after 2 years of investigating the group involved, the police raid was expertly timed. was linked to the reason why the raid took place to day is quite simple. the italian authorities decide when the major strike should happen. the munich part is only a small one compared to the italian operation eureka. we're talking about more than $100.00 arrest warrants and many thousands of police officers involved across europe today. the carabinieri police operation in italy was backed by helicopters. and arrest warrants were served for possession, production, trafficking of drugs in weapons and money laundering. it's the biggest police operation ever carried out in europe against the calabria and giant ghetto. absolutely. we have documented money transfers of more than 22000000 euros between italy and columbia. via a chinese system in one year,
9:20 pm
was it more than 22000000 euros. lindy, emanuel with european authorities have been working together to wage a campaign against the giant jetta in recent years. the group is italy's most powerful and wealthy mafia group and is suspected of controlling the bulk of cocaine flowing across europe. returning to sudan now where the fighting continues between rival force is over control of the country. and this despite agreeing in principle to a week long cease fire, hundreds of thousands of suited these are fleeing the fighting. many are heading for neighboring chad. this village in chad is just a few 100 meters from the border with sedan. refugees arriving here are mainly women and children. how to be said an animal planet. the war drove us from ohio. we will win on children when the armed people came. and we fled to the bush with the

little. how is it possible, helena, mother, he sudanese refugees have fled, not only to chad, but to south sudan, the central african republic, and egypt. many traveling vast distances on foot or on donkeys. the united nations refugee agency and n g o is including the world food program or on the ground in chad. but the scope of the problem is huge. the new arrivals from sudan join more than 400000 sudanese refugees already here. and chad is struggling with widespread hunger amongst its own population. the crisis in sudan and the pressure of huge flows of people creating even more instability. the ripple effect for the region is significant. it's a real concern, and we just need to find peace. we need the 2 parties to the conflict do come together and find a way to resolve the conflict. because this has the possibility of the simulating
9:22 pm
the whole region as agencies and the government struggle to keep up. many people are taking shelter under trees and lack access to food and clean water. every one here is working against the clock. the rainy season is just weeks away, making access much more difficult and hundreds of thousands more people are expected to arrive. if fighting doesn't stop or more now, i'm joined from nairobi by michael dunford. he is the regional director for eastern africa at the u. n. world food program. michael's going to have you on the program . how would you describe these humanitarian, the situation in sudan right now? the situation saddam has nothing short of a catastrophe. we're seeing the fighting got to him and elsewhere across the country. this is creating misery for the people of suda. before the conflict
9:23 pm
started, there were over 15000000 a 3rd of the entire population who were hungry. they were another 3000000 people who, who were already displaced. they were housing 1100000 refugees, full 1000000 women and children were malnourished. and this conflict, what is happening today is making a bad situation infinitely worse. the u. n. is talking about millions of people being internally displaced with in sudan, hundreds of thousands of refugees. how safe is it for people to stay in the country? with seeing considerable movements elsewhere into the country and beyond the borders because of a lack of security. because cities like cartoon areas of stuff or elsewhere in the
9:24 pm
country simply are too insecure for people to remain. and this is putting pressure not only on the population inside saddam is putting pressure in the neighboring countries as well. we need the conflict to stop. we need the armies to end the fighting. and we want the people to be able to return home and return home safely. and let me pick up on the people who do make it to neighboring countries, such as chad, what kind of conditions await them there. i think a story showed it. it's very blake, we as humanitarians are struggling to be able to absorb a caseload on top of an existing caseload that we were struggling to feed even before the crisis in south to don. refugees were only receiving 50 percent of a minimum ration because of a lack of funding because of the needs across the country. with more refugees
9:25 pm
arriving the world food program will need more funding from our donors. if we are to be able to provide the type of assistance these populations require you. let me just ask before we run out of time, michael, are you going to get the funding that you need to make sure that people do not go hungry? to be honest at this point, i'm not sure we're going to continue to scale operations. we're going to continue to make the case as to why we need the funding, but we'll be calling on all of our donors, the europeans, the americans, and beyond. to dig deep, to make sure that the people in need have what they require. my go done for regional director in eastern africa for the u. n's world food program. we appreciate your time and your insights and i wish you all the best. thank you very much. was m sad news from the world of athletics?
