10:01 pm
a security guard. and as fighting in sudan continues, hundreds of thousands are looking for any way to get out of the country. ah, i'm bring gov's, our viewers watching on p b. s. in the united states into all of you around the world. welcome to night. russia is accusing ukraine of attempting to assassinate president vladimir putin. moscow says it foiled an overnight drawn attack on the kremlin. and it is pointing the finger at ukraine. russian lawmakers are calling the attack a cherished act and are demanding retaliation. keith had strongly denied any involvement, a senior advisor to ukraine's president zalinski warning. this could be a false flag designed to justify russia's next move against ukraine.
10:02 pm
ah, this footage circulating on russian telegram channels shows the alleged overnight attack and smoke rising above the main kremlin palace. there has been no independent verification of this footage, but russia accuses ukraine of trying to assassinate putin. ukrainian president volota may zalinski denied any involvement in the alleged incident. oh, we don't attack fortune or moscow i'll we fly to home on our territory when defending our will just sit it. we don't have you know enough left them for these. that's why we don't use it any anywhere for, for us, that is a deficit. the way we cons banded, and we didn't attack pu tim. we leave it to tribunal on
10:03 pm
how it's going in washington. u. s. secretary of state antony, blinkin cast doubt on the kremlin allegations. these are decisions for ukraine's. i've see the reports. i can't turn in any way. validate them. we simply, we simply don't know a 2nd. i would take anything coming out of the kremlin with a very large shaker salt. so let's see. ah, we'll see what, what, what the facts are. i'm and it's, it's really hard to comment or speculate on this without really, really knowing what the facts are. moscow has threatened to retaliate against ukraine, making residents of keith, worried for their safety. when it was a church, they might try attacking the strategic objects. their decisions are made in key if we actually did my chair, let's let them his eyes. again, we need to remain in safety and take it off ourselves and our loved ones with semi
10:04 pm
mac this have, at least for now putin remains safe. moscow announced that he will take part in a scheduled world war to victory day parade on red square. next week was got more of this. now from our correspondence, the connelly in the ukrainian capital and jennifer palka in riga, you may remember western authorities shut down our moscow office riga is the temporary homes both of you. it's good to see you. nick, let me start with you, i'm president. zalinski is denial. it couldn't be any clear but a cynic, or perhaps a russian might say, well, he would say that wouldn't that obviously makes a whole lot of sense. but equally, when you look at previous attacks by drones on russian soil attacks that most pundits experts say are very lucky to be ukrainian ones present. let's keep, doesn't come out with these kinds of claim to come out with these kinds of announcements to the world. basically, and if it were then late approved,
10:05 pm
these were indeed ukrainian text that would be very, very embarrassing and very bad for his credibility, which he desperately needs to get weapons and other western support. in the past we've seen 2nd or 3rd as long as you're being wheeled out to kind of say no, that wasn't auth golf and then you know, kind of disappear again into the isa. i think there is a real worry hearing that if lots of people in europe who are maybe worried about escalation, worried about supplying ukraine with arms, which believe that this was a ukrainian attack on the criminal, on the center of russian power that they might pull back and say this is getting too dangerous, this is, you know, there is a risk of contagion here. we need to put the brake on support for ukraine. nick, we know that jordan attacks on western infrastructure close to ukraine. they have become more frequent. so regardless of the official denials is the presumption tonight that keith is behind them. and why are we seeing this increase in attacks? i think 1st on it's important to distinguish between attacks that are happening
10:06 pm
pretty close to ukraine borders or in russia occupied crimea that are feasible, logistically, and that are doable with relatively simple means important states that western countries have forbidden ukraine from using the weapons they supply against russia proper rather than russia occupied ukraine. we've seen attacks in thrust posting attacks on russian facilities just near crimea recently. that will make sense also in terms of preparing ukraine's expected counter offensive. it would be pretty extraordinary if ukraine were able to send a drone, 67800 kilometers from ukrainian history to the center of moscow. with all those russian anti across anti drone systems on the roofs of moscow build is unable to stop it. i think potentially your most expert thing, if this does turn out to be true, it's more likely that this is a drone that will have been lot closer to the criminal, potentially by opposition groups potentially with some kind of coordination with ukraine. but the ukraine is government would a take the risk and be, be able to do this? i think that still seems pretty far fetch. okay jennifer, let's try to get the eagle dinner. but from russia,
10:07 pm
what do we know about russia's claims tonight? well kremlin spokesperson? dmitri pasco, of called it a planned terrorist attack with the aim to take vladimir putin life. so targeting the president's residency in the kremlin. but according to him, putting was not present in the kremlin, but worked from the value of the russian investigative committee is now likely to lounge an investigation on terrorism. and of course, he blamed ukraine. and here for this attack, according to the kremlin press statement, quote, the russian side reserves the right to retaliate when and where it sees fit and quote. but how exactly this retaliation could look like? well, he did not specify bent, it's not only the kremlin russian deputies and propagandists openly and loudly called for strikes and kia and even ukraine's president zalinski is residents know jennifer, the video that we've seen image shows a drone exploding over the crib, wouldn't be there are bound to be questions about whether this alleged attack was
10:08 pm
organized within russia or were abroad, or even possibly staged by russia itself. of course, there will be questions, especially because of the frequency of drone attacks or explosions in the last month, weeks, or even days counting this alleged attack on the kremlin. there were 9 drone attacks in total so far. so we also have to keep in mind that the information we're getting and the reports we getting are coming from russian state media. they have not been confirmed by western media or experts. the only clear statement we have so far comes from the criminal itself and from ukraine, which vehemently denies being invoked. of course, there is the possibility of russia having staged this attack, trying to use this to legitimize to warn you crate, especially because they waited a whole day before publishing the foot is also on may, 9th, there will be a parade held on the red square to celebrate russia's victory in the world war 2.
10:09 pm
so what better timing to evoke, more patriotic feelings in russian society than showing them that the enemy is here almost at their doorstep in the kremlin. jennifer park in reagan connelly in key to both of you. thank you. so how plausible is age rolling attack on the kremlin? let's go now to curie chavez, a political scientist from texas tech university, and a research fellow with the modern war institute at west point. she has written extensively on the use of drones in the war in ukraine. she just be delight from lubbock, texas. good to see you again. the chavez. so what was your reaction to this video that came out of moscow showing a drone exploiting over the kremlin? of course it was sensational, but i think it also demonstrates the type of capacity that was involved in this attack. that drone or the jones in the videos, although short, seemed to indicate that those, that it was probably a moderate capacity because they're smaller drones. they have smaller payloads and
10:10 pm
the war had seemed to have delivered a kind of 1st payload, especially against the very well fortified kremlin. so on the other hand though, they did, the russian official said that they had electronic interview navigation tax. so this suggested it could be the ukranian army or a row actor on either side. he said the kremlin is well fortified, but what about moscow's air defense capabilities? i mean, are we talking about a drawing that was able to, to pervade the radar? apparently, moscow does have a missile defense system. and recently, in mid january, russia installed additional defense systems as some of their strategic locations and moscow. so that indicates that they recognized that ukraine has the capacity to penetrate their airspace and launch an attack like this. believes that it has the incentives and knows that its own aerial defense system has so ferocity that needed
10:11 pm
to be short of the shortest distance from the ukranian border to moscow was about 500 kilometers or about 300 miles. is it possible for a drone of the size we're talking about to fly from outside the boss scale to your space and to make it all the way in to over the kremlin? it is technically possible and it entails a different capacity level. so on one hand, it's possible that this was launched from a shorter range, or that it was remotely operated from someone in this thing on who the operator was . but it is technically possible the, the 2 probable platforms based on the size and the, the wing span of the drone in the video is that it was the ukranian u. j. 22. also it could be a chinese made drone that the ukrainian has and its arsenal and that those both
10:12 pm
have a longer endurance. so a range of anywhere from $800.00 to a 1000 kilometers. so it's within the realm of possibility. and i think i would really appreciate what your past correspondence were articulating, but i think that instead of just capacity, we should be thinking about the incentives behind this. what incentives might ukraine have, which has historically focused on military targets, targets of high military value, like munitions, depos are headquartered facilities. so this is a pretty significant departure from their modus operandi, and the more so far. but i do think that it has some military advantage if it causes moscow to pull more of its short range defense. aerial defense from the front lines, from the war effort. that means that it's not protecting potential targets of military value. and if it provokes the response and kind from russia, russia has a very limited and shrinking supply of these precision long range aerial platforms, and using them in a symbolic attack against
10:13 pm
a very well protected political target is probably not the best use. so there are potential incentives on both sides. yeah, we will definitely be watching to see watch russia does what ukraine does as well to re chavez. joining us divide from will, the, texas, we appreciate your time and your insights. thank you. thank you. we have to look now at some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world. ukraine says at least 18 people have been killed in russian strikes of the harrison region. 46, others have been wounded. a hyper market and a train station in harrison city were shelled. some of the victims we understand it been shopping for supplies ahead of a 3 day lockdown that has been ordered by the local authorities authority saying this will enabled him to root out for russians. fox. a believers in journalists and activists has been sentenced to 8 years in prison, accused of plotting unrest and planning to seize power, roman proto,

own population. the crisis in sudan and the pressure of huge flows of people creating even more instability. their ripple effect for the region is significant. it's a real concern and we just need to find the fully need the 2 parties to the conflict to come together and find a way to resolve the conflict. because this has the possibility totally stimulating the whole region as agencies and the governments struggle to keep up. many people are taking shelter under trees and lack access to food and clean water. everyone here is working against the clock. the rainy season is just weeks away, making access much more difficult and hundreds of thousands more people are expected to arrive if fighting doesn't stop. or earlier i spoke with michael dunford, he's
10:24 pm
a regional director for eastern africa at the u. n. world food program and i asked him to describe the current humanitarian situation ensued. the situation saddam is nothing short of the catastrophe. we're seeing the fighting in costume and elsewhere across the country. this is creating misery for the people of suda. before the conflict started, there were over 15000000 a 3rd of the entire population who are hungry. they were another 3000000 people who were already displaced. they were housing 1100000 refugees for 1000000 women and children were malnourished. and this conflict, what is happening today is making a bad situation infinitely worse. the u. n. is talking about millions of people being internally displaced with in sudan, hundreds of thousands of refugees. how safe is it for people to stay in the country?
10:25 pm
we're seeing considerable movements elsewhere into the country and beyond the borders because of a lack of security. because cities like cartoon areas of stuff or elsewhere in the country simply to insecure the people to remain. and this is putting pressure not only on the population inside to don, is putting pressure in the neighboring countries as well. we need the conflict to stop. we need the armies to end the fighting. and we want the people to be able to return home and return home safely. and let me pick up on this. the people who do make it to neighboring countries, such as chad, what kinds of conditions await them they're i think a story showed it. it's very bleak. we, as humanitarians are struggling to be able to absorb
10:26 pm
a caseload on top of an existing caseload that we were struggling to feed even before the crisis in south sudan, refugees, we're only receiving 50 percent of a minimum ration because of a lack of funding because of the needs across the country with more refugees arriving the world food program will need more funding from our donors. if we are to be able to provide the type of assistance these populations require you. let me just ask before we run out of time, michael, are you going to get the funding that you need to make sure that people do not go hungry? to be honest at this point, i'm not sure we're going to continue to scale operations. we're going to continue to make the case as to why we need the funding, but we'll be calling on all of our donors, the europeans, the americans, and beyond. to dig deep to make sure that the people in need have what they
