a studio, but dw special correspondence at abraham, i'm at, we just had the president zalinski speaking to the leaders of the arab world, cooling on them for help. can you tell us how he's picturing his appeal? well, in typical zelinski fashion, i mean we've watched them address world leaders since the war began. and what he always tries to do is find a common thread in the story of his people and the people that he's addressing. and so he was, you know, he pitched, he started out speaking about the cry me, kermit crimean tars. you know, the muslim population of ukraine seemed to be where the 1st people to experience russian aggression. because of course, crimea was annexed by russia in 2000. and 14 and, and so they have been living under ocoee patient far longer than us. you know, some of the other occupied parts of you create, appealing to, you know, that's room full of it. leaders of muslim majority countries to look, you know,
3:04 pm
to help the muslims of crimea. and of course, the people who be created. so he's always able to find these commonalities. that's really part of a, you know, how he's been appearing across the globe. and you know, and if looking beyond that, you know, this is a room of a arrow bleeders regional, heavy weights that haven't always been as enthusiastic in their support of ukraine as, as president zalinski would have liked to have a country like egypt or regional heavy weight and, you know, an ally of the united states and there were reports that he was actually planning to supply russia with a rocket. so he's really, you know, he's appealing to them to, to, to come to be much more supportive of ukraine. but also he's there we know to speak with conference comment, been so many about a possible piece of formula. of course. uh, jetta sees itself now. you know, and it's rising a role in the, in the region as, as the diplomatic powerhouse. and so there could be possibilities for mediation there. i think what's interesting though is that on the day that you have president
3:05 pm
aside being welcome back to a to the error bleed. you also have present zaleski in the room, and these 2 men could not be more different. i mean, president assad has, you know, he's, he's survived the war partially because russia has helped him in, you know, in, in, in, in his attacks on his own people. and now presidency lensky is there to, you know, to, to warn against russian aggression because of what's happening, his country. so it must be a very tense room, i imagine, with rational being sort of the open in the room. if you will write a, we're going to come right back to you in a 2nd because we all going to take a closer look at how special aisle a side has returns to the arab league for the 1st time and move in a decade. essentially, securing his come back on the instructional stage despite the civil war grinding on in his own country. let's take a look. the syrian state tv captured the moment special rolla side came in from the cold. i saw the diplomat ton delivers his invitation to rejoin the arrow bleak,

a dramatic turning to ryan for the pariah president, accused of butchering his own people. defending the control the sea, the arab league said it was about opening a channel of communication. the mana n o my father retired of syria, is the beginning of a movement. no name of a man, and a good art in 2011, aside, faced nationwide on race. and a direct challenge to whose diagnostic grip on power to send to the army unleashing a bloody civil war that has claimed half a 1000000 lives and sent millions, leading syria aside, was placed under sanctions. and ostracized by the international community with the war on going, us says nothing has changed. good afternoon, everyone. happy monday. we have been consulting with our partners about their plans and making clear that we will not normalize relations with the side regime and that
3:07 pm
our sanctions remain in full effect for us side. it's not just doors abroad that are opening doors at home to send them because this month he hosted his a weight in counterpart to why one of his countries closest allies. there was the 1st such visit since the war broke out. more evidence, perhaps of a broader diplomatic stall. we have dw special corresponding to abraham, here in the studio with us. and the, the arab league says that it's inviting before l. a sub back to the summit. and it's all about this as an opening, a channel of communication. can you explain to us the reasons they have? so read missing syria and, and what do they want to talk to them about? i mean, will they say that this is, you know, the way to help syrians living remaining in the country and that, that would open up channels to help them and to give them

a better life. but i mean, there are a lot of outstanding issues that air leaders would want to discuss with president bush charlotte site. i mean, we just saw these pictures of the iranian counterpart visiting him and so curbing iranian influence in the region will be something that concerns the saudi arabia, the host of the summit. there's also the, you know, the cap to gun tree that has really flourished in syria under this current regime. and, you know, of course, the issue of returning searing refugees who, you know, this has a conflict that's been going on for more than 10 years. it's affected all surrounding countries, not even speaking about europe and, and, and beyond. and so these are all outstanding issues that will be, that they'll probably be discussing. but i think, you know, sadly what they won't be discussing is any kind of talks about accountability and about the kind of human rights that have been violated over that a, that decade. and i think that, you know, that sense of very, very bad signal to other leaders were present. for example, if we look at what's going on in sudan right now, we have 2 military leaders,
3:09 pm
essentially engaged in a competition about who can stay in power and on their way they're killing civilians. and would this, would this sense them? as you know, if you're the last man standing and you're the only person we have to speak with, then you will be invited back into the fault regardless of what human rights violations you will come in. and i think that's a very dangerous message. that's not exactly personal per se, is that, and i just wanted to ask you about sanctions. our a side remains on the sanctions from west and countries, but also the arab league. so are we expecting that the leak will now lift those sanctions on a side? i think that will be the natural, you know, we'll see in the coming weeks of, you know, more find of economic relations. i think gulf countries will be eager to get in the, you know, on in, on investments or rebuilding syria. i mean, we have had 10 years more than 10 years of nonce a fighting and there's a lot of a lot to invest. and i think this will, you know, this will play pretty much into a president assad's narrative and will in fact give him
3:10 pm
a lot more leverage over these countries because they've made very clear that they have all these outstanding issues that he will in some ways be calling the shots when it comes to the rebuilding process and things like the return of refugees and, and, and, and his countries, you know, placing the region to w, special correspondent, abraham. thank you so much. now as we heard of to attending the arab league, summit in saudi arabia, ukraine's president's landscape will be flying onto japan, where leaders of the world's most powerful democracies have agreed to new sanctions against russia. the g 7 group has pledged to prohibit russian access to technology, industrial equipment, and services that could aid the will in ukraine. the modem is lensky is expected to join the leaders in person. earlier they visited here. russian is peace. paula. now this is a memorial that remembers the 10s of thousands killed by the 1st atomic bomb dropped

by the us at the end of world war 2. and data will use chief international edison. richard will k is in hiroshima, and i asked him what g 7 lead is hope to achieve with the new measures against russia? yeah, well and yeah, i mean there are a couple of different sort of sets of emphasis in what the g 7 have been talking about today. on the one hand, there's quite a bit of emphasis on a clamping down on contravene named sanctions that already exist. so trying to make sure that, for instance, he likes the technical equipment and cannot get into russia by a 3rd countries rather than the countries of origins. or, for instance, trying to make sure that russian bank branches also in the countries cannot be used to funnel funds into russia. so, contravention of sentence, i'm trying to, to kind of plug in the gaps in the sanctions regime that have been observed in recent months. that's one side. and then they're also marius, which afresh,

for instance, the dime business. so diamonds is still quite a big money's been a of the russians. they haven't been a focus of sanctions sofa. and the different members of the g 7 going at different speeds to the u. k. for instance, immediately selecting a band on inputs of russian diamonds. the you saying that they're moving to restrict the diamond trade diamonds. also a sensitive issue in countries such as india was so, so representative here at the g 7. so so a crackdown on a new area that as well. but i think overall, the message coming from the g 7 on ukraine is pretty much more of the same, most support for ukraine supporting it. and particularly as it moves towards his high anticipated account or offensive. and also trying to close any gaps and tighten the screws further on russia and maintaining the message the when at whatever point it might be. if it does get to a point a piece towards the dates you crane, that must be setting the agenda. those piece towards that they don't want the
