wars and democratic backsliding rights groups worry that women and minorities will be caught in the line of fire. and the turkish currency has hit a record low against a dollar or 2 on one, but by a fairly narrow margin, will be a rocky road ahead for a nation divided nicole for ocean berlin. and this is the day the no one has lost all 85000000 people hope one of the results of the responsibility given to us by our people. we are not offended, resentful or angry with anyone how much we are very happy trying to got on the other one is a well leader. there is nothing else to say about it. in

my real son, this is about the difficulty is a heads up, but i want you to know that we will be the 1st to stand up to these problems as well. i don't want to live in turnkey anymore. the elections were a choice between a republic and a form of monarchy. and i guess the people chose mana key. also on the day as nigeria and all grades bullet to nubile as its president. the nation faces a multitude of pressing issues, including weakening economy and rising and secure. 31 says be seduced phones if that is besides no problem. good. yeah. good. yeah. be a jobs for you pulled up. it's not. yeah, because everywhere on this and this would you mind just bomb and the bank wants raise you? it's got some people don't want it on site, matthew. so it shows issues will also require another guy on the 19

a country divided. welcome to the show. it's been a weekend, the 1st for a turkey and the country's 1st ever presidential run off the convent recham type, erewhon became the 1st leader to ever secure a 3rd term and power or to on 152 percent of the votes after facing the biggest challenge to his 20 year role as rival came on, can each stone didn't dispute the outcome, but call the election unfair? an assessment backs by international election observers are the ones challenger had promised to restore democratic norms before veering to an anti migrant platform. in the final days of campaigning, but the u turn failed to win him enough support to defeat or the one he w special corresponding to abraham has more. the rich of type are the ones that like 12 victory is still sinking in here and assemble were the majority of
10:34 pm
residents voted for his opponents came as killed each that a little disappointment is in the air. just honestly, i'm very sad about the election results. turkey has lost, i don't think people really understand how bad the results are. i'm very sorry. i don't think this was, you know, from the very beginning of the democratic process. it was not fair because our don't control the majority of the media sex and that hard on should be the president of all 85000000. i'm going to keep going. instead, she's acting like the president of the 50 percent out on that both candidates ran fires, campaigns with 2 very different visions for tricky. the result of the boat with about 4 percent difference shows that this country is polarized split funds, things like the kurdish question, migration, how to run the economy. and rates as ballots were still being counted. president air don't address to supporters in his temple. he thinks them and focused
10:35 pm
on unity, but some of his other statements showed no sign of reaching out to the other side. or job does the opposition c h p loves the l g b t take the time they infiltrate the a k p family is sacred to us. his victory speech and the capital and kind of addressed in prison. kurdish leader to select kingdom attach a dollar to kentucky with justice here the rights and the rule of no rang true because you cannot get to a person out of prison who has caused the death of 51 of i could each brothers this is actually under our government that is out of the questionnaire, tick. those are the one also stacy's, a number of other challenges,
10:36 pm
like a crumbling economy and rebuilding devastated areas hit by earthquakes earlier this year. but his supporters aren't thinking about that right now. what's going on is that you know what we believe and trust them, our president, we're sure he's going to fix all economic problems and trying to do that. just talking with the law. look, we're very happy. we were expecting these results, which many turkey has made its choice. i think it's the right choice can the other month. for me, that's a good choice. it may not be good for some, but for us it's good was mr. hill syrian refugees and turkey will undoubtedly be breathing a sigh of relief throughout the campaign to the start of the route to deport them from the country present, or the one said he also wanted refugees to go. but voluntarily, as the turkish republic enters its 2nd century, it faces a lot of open questions. for now,
10:37 pm
they will be answered by the man who is ruled at longest. for a closer look, i can now welcome turned in dire. he's a turkish journalist. he was the editor in chief of the center, left newspaper to him, hurry ed until 2016 when he fled political persecution in turkey. he has since been living in exile here in germany, and mr. goodner, welcome to the day. how do you feel about the result? very sad and disappointing, really. i mean it's a disaster for the interest and we'll go see. and unfortunately i feel like losing the country. the polls were wrong, the air to on did much better than expected. were you surprised by it and find the results? i know to be honest, i was expecting this because it's a race against the whole package states. you know, so everyone has been using the whole state, make sure every including media and judicial system. so how can you beat the whole
10:38 pm
state mechanism? so we de people's power. it was really tough. and even so we got something close to the 50 percent. yeah, and it's what mr. and can, it's our own who has been, has been denouncing right. that these elections might have been free, but they were by no means fair because the air to one, for example, controls 90 percent of turkish media is that really wouldn't make the difference or was aired one, the stronger canada does he have a stronger pull on people as a politician then calisto had she destroyed the cookies economy and he's been power for 121 years now. so and knowing that, that's the, the economy is week of coins. he use people's fee is like, oh took you would be delighted to see the gay community will be running the country and the the family will be the wiser. the families will be the why,
10:39 pm
the big cetera. so with those t is release, he succeeded to get the backing of the people and the he prevents the position talking about the economy. so it will look that would move and unfortunately it worked very well. yeah. and did work out for him, but still close to 50 percent of turkish motors didn't go with the opposition. what does that polarize? ation? interpret society mean for the way forward. as you saw how people were resistance and how they relate is travelling for tourist democracy and this is the whole point of it. so we are facing with a health food a glove. so if you can see the, the full but yeah, this country is not a barrels or iran, and people really is fighting for democracy and, oh, they are so close. they verse so close to the victory. and i guess in the coming
10:40 pm
years of the hope is still there and search democracy can leads even though as long it will be more aggressive in the coming years. what will it take for the democratic forces in turkey to build on that momentum, to build on, on what we just saw in these election, or what is so is a huge, the sort of data team on the, the very different from the parts of the particular range from national is to social democrats from the key moment to the curves of from salt is lum, is to the, the national this. oh, so what we're binding them was the on the edge on feelings and trying to save the country from a kind of a religion really just a government. and i guess if they can keep this sort of verity in the coming months and years, i guess they still have
10:41 pm
a chance in the local elections that piece in the coming year with our don. now i don't think that it would go for another 5 years, i mean 1st the economy then his health is not those so. so how can i say i won't be so long, i guess, to keep the country full of surprises. you never know. i mean, i don't think that it will take flight use what the, what is important is the, this sort of very key from the, the western countries. so we, so it would be congratulation messages from the western government with twin autographs. and i guess i can understand the interest of the western governments where they know that the people here, the backing the, the resistance of these people. and i hope this backing would gone uh till we can get out and we'll place it back. what does it mean for you personally and your prospect of,
10:42 pm
of returning home that he's now been handed another terminal. so yeah, difficult. i was packing my baggage uh the day before. and i was hoping to go back to the country as, as a, as a free season. but now of course, oh, you listen to add on. i mean, he was ordering the judges for someone. uh, to keep the, the one of the position lead is in jail. so we are talking about a country who does the good the president can order the judges and the people shopping for execution of him. so of course it will take some more years for me to stay next, the tax journalist john, under all the best thing you many thanks. thank you so much for taking the time to me. what does this, is it a good morning? i will be brief and i will also try to be very clear as possible. i had
10:43 pm
a meeting with his majesty the king. hello. and i have informed ahead of state of my intention to hold a cabinet meeting this afternoon. but at least to this of parliament and to call the general election unless i made this decision based on the election results yesterday. and i've you stop the indicator said what i that's a yeah. spanish, fine minister pedro sanchez there announcing a move that could cost him his job. prior elementary elections were originally expected for the end of the year, but will now be held in 2 months time. surprised decision considered by many of the biggest gamble of sanchez career comes after his left wing align stuff with heavy losses and sundays regional and local elections. both were picked up by the conservative peoples party and the ultra right box party. opposition leader of the media space. whole welcome to move and called on spaniards to vote for him in the snap election show it most. if we have just started, i get off to you yesterday, citizens folks and the majority from my party. it was from what's on chisel hasn't
10:44 pm
been removed yet. spain has been called to do so in 54 days and see when they go through the us. and we can now speak to align them with cherry. she's a professor at the i school of economics and global affairs in madrid. metairie, welcome. how big of a political earthquake is this a pretty big guy. i saw the news when the news came through. i saw it, i saw it actually as he, he gave a speech this morning and it, i think, i think it's very rare for those of us were political analysts to actually be surprised. and so that, that's often kind of fun. but it really is. i, i definitely agree that is probably the biggest risk in his career and, and this is a man who, who's kind of known for his risk taking, going back to 2018 when you know, he became he became prime minister via know, confidence vote. and then the very next year went into election. so this is someone who's, who's had had a few elections, has
10:45 pm
a few elections already under his belt. and seems to think that this is the right move at this time. let's take his thinking apart because spain had general elections coming up at the end of the year anyway. why would sanchez take this gamble? yeah, and that's, that's the big question i, i think it one thing that's important to remember, like all elections, right. the this last election, what were the municipal and regional numbers are, are never going to be the same is what a national, what the numbers for national election might look like. apparently they've made the calculation that they can, they can still get it over the line for a national action in the next couple of months. um, the other thing that i think is really major is that the, the, the people's party is going to have to govern in tandem with the ultra right fox party. and what the bet they're currently making is that spanish citizens are going to see what this actually means in the coming months we've, we've just got
10:46 pm
a glimpse of it in cust. the guy lo leone. but in other parts of spring we have it . and so this is a chance to actually see what this really looks like an action and, and how scary you know, army, it might be particularly to people on the left. and that, that goes hand in hand with another gamble that their, their governing partner, polinos, which has come out extremely weakened out after the selection and who, who really proved a very difficult relationship. and particularly in the last year. and they're now very, very weekend. yolanda diaz, who leads to splintered off into a new party called sue my part of the issue they have now by having an election now instead of in december, is that it's going to take them. they're not going to have a whole lot of time to get organized and put together with and, and, and try to take their bite out of the left side of the boat and this coming election. so i think that such as is also making, making a bet there that, that the socialist will able to take will be able to take a larger share of the left vote and, and perhaps not have to govern in,
10:47 pm
in that kind of a coalition. again. yeah, i want to take a closer look at the big winters of these elections that just happened. the ultra right box party. you mentioned them there. what is their appeal as well? they're they, they're, they're very right wing, their anti immigration, um, anti feminist, anti uh, pretty much anything and gala, terry and um, pretty much pro whiteman, so they, they, they appeal to they, they take a pretty big chunk off of the far right. obviously of the, the popular parties vote and they double through double their vote share in the selection compared to the last municipal and regional election. so. so that's huge . they didn't really, really well. and, and what's important there, i mean they, they want to have, i know, in one region, they'd like to have a law where before having an abortion women have to see a scan of,
10:48 pm
of fetus. they're, they're very, very right wing type policies that they buy to put through. and so, um, certainly that, that's what was what sanchez's bidding on here. and here's one of the things that might not work out so well for him is the fact that what the pay, what you know the, the people's party can do is drag their feet on forming these governments so that they're not really don't have a chance to really swing into action before the next vote, because that's, that's really the dick with difficulty for the people's party is that they're, they're a pretty more, you know, normal just right of center party. they're not terribly radical. them in the pace. so a really, um, you know, yeah, they have a lot of cultural differences but, but they're both, they're both pretty centrist parties, but boxes pretty extreme. and because boxes taking so much vote share from the people's party much like put a most had taken so much vote share from from the pay. so a right, these 2 parties before used to just it was really kind of a 2 party system that until about 10 years now, now they have to,
10:49 pm
to play ball with the more extreme us and, and, and that's making governing a lot more difficult. yeah. but in other countries like germany, for example, playing ball with these ad ultra right parties is absolutely off limits, right? nobody would form political alliances with radical right forces like b s, b here, here in germany. why does not seem to be the case for spain? conservatives, because they want to, when they want to be. and so the only way they can get there is, is through that way what the, the people's party. but the pay absorbed in this last election was a more centrist party called citizens. that, that sort of took up a political space between the socialist and the people's party but, but really, really took most of their votes from the people's party as well. so that, that's another you know, that was a natural, lyons in 2019 a lot of people hoped that that citizens would have, would have formed an alliance with the socialists. and it would have been
10:50 pm
a pretty centrist alliance, but their leader didn't just didn't want to do it. it seemed like it was more personal than anything else. just didn't want to work at pedro sanchez. so, you know, now now really on the right, there's just these 2 parties, and so the people's party has, has no other place to go if they want a gover in these regions. and so their only way to do that, and that was the original accusation. when, when box started getting boats back in 2019 was wow, they're going to have to make an alliance and they went, you know, they went on and on about how no, they won't be governing with this party. but now in the end it's, it's the only way they can get there. and as we know in politics, the point is to get into office and, and gover. um and make your own policy and, and that's, that's where they want to go. but as, as we just saw with, you know, the socialist and, and putting most of these parties off and just take very time, doesn't always work out there at the boxes of program includes proposals that would violate the spanish constitution. though there is
10:51 pm
a real possibility for them to become king makers for the conservative people's party at what would that mean for spain to have box in government and all try right party it's it's, it's a pretty scary thing. you know, and, and the sanchez government is put forward a lot of progressive laws. one of the most contentious when recently that, that you may have heard of is, is the sexual consent based rape. ah, i recently wrote about for world politics review. it really had some unintended results and had the, the pay so a and, and, and put a most inviting over it because it was something that put in most the far left party lead and, and, and they, they really didn't want to back down from their law but it, it went to the early release of a lot of sexual crime offenders. and so this, this, this game, them tons and tons of criticism in the party and was a very visceral issue. and that's, that's the kind of thing that,
10:52 pm
that can often happen. you know that while making is just more difficult because this is harder to get to an agreement and, and we'll see the same sort of thing as much as, as much as the people's party. things that they can keep. fox under control box is not about being kept under control. i mean, their whole thing is, is to be, you know, has to be all is outrageous as possible. they take a lot of lessons from, from trump and, and, and they're, they're constantly launching grenades wherever they can. and so i, i think that if, if the people's party think, you know, if the whole things he's going to be able to, to, to restrain them. i, i think he's, he's got some tough lessons coming to him tomorrow. we'll stick around and see how that goes. the head of the people's party definitely said that this was the beginning of a new political era. a lot of material of i university. and we did many things for breaking it down for us. my pleasure to measure in our the countries no president has taken office bullet to nubile,
